  • Swapping the valve seals on Cylinder #8 on my LS swapped S10 Blazer.
    I try to discuss the steps, why for each and offer alternatives for securing the valves if you can’t charge the cylinder with air pressure.

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  2 года назад +3

      Remove old seal with channel lock pliers, install new seal with appropriate sized socket if you don’t have the install tool.
      The “Tophat” style seal and locator combo is the easiest and best choice for single springs. Select a socket to fit over the metal area and install.
      Two piece seal/locator is a little tricky, install locator then find out whether a 12mm or 13mm 12pt socket fits the top of the new seal best to safely install the seal without damaging the viton/rubber part. It’s best if you can add a little lube and try to just push the seals on, only tap them down as needed to seat fully.
      It will be self-explanatory when you’re in the process. JD

    I almost always just zip the rockers down on LS's when they're in something of mine. If its someone else's I'll put them at 22ft/lbs. So far so good on both ways lol

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  4 года назад

      SniderTron 3000 I was confused about the possibility of the valve spring pressure giving a false torque reading when the valves are partially open. I always torque the rocker bolts but never have used the EOIC method as recommended.
      If valve spring pressure can affect rocker bolt torque, then the dual-spring setups would be even worse. 🤷‍♂️
      But imho you’d compress the plunger in the lifter before affecting the valve spring very much. 🤔🤔🤔

    This is a great video! You shared some great knowledge. Your valves and the surrounding area look super clean compared to mine. In my engine, the valves and springs were all covered in oil. Is that normal? I know my valve seals have failed and I am replacing them but wasn’t sure if oil should normally be present all over the values.

    EOIC doesn’t matter on the LS. Been doing these since the LS inception and found taken the rocker arm bolts down evenly works the best. Factory spec is 22 ft lb and I never had an issue. Beam type torque wrenches are way better than click type on smaller fasteners. Seen guys with clickers pull the threads out by not paying attention to their settings.

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  4 года назад +1

      Mike MacCracken I’m glad you commented about the rocker bolt torque. I was thinking you should collapse the plunger in the lifter before anything I’d think.
      I was told and seen guys claiming GM recommends the torque on the heal of the cam, so I thought I’d try it and mention it to see what most people thought.
      My 1/4” torque wrench is about 1 ftlb short when compared to the beam style.
      I’m hoping these new valve seals fix the oil in the exhaust port issue!
      Thanks again for your feedback I appreciate it! JD

    There is an updated valve cover for this engine. The left side valve cover has the pcv system built into it. If you buy the updated valve cover it will eliminate this issue.

      I know this comment is a year old but i just came across this video and wanted to say my 5.3 Saab 97X has a issue where driving down the highway for a bit it will randomly puff out a big cloud of blue smoke. It's weird because there does not seem to be any pattern to it except never having seen it happen in the city.
      I thought maybe highway speeds/heavy vacuum was sucking oil through the terribly designed pcv so i bought the updated cover and it didn't go away.
      Not sure what else it could be. I'd think if it was a valve guide it would happen consistently.

      Stealthy Wolf The rope trick was a carry over from my Pontiac V8 days. I learned the rope trick for holding the valves up and believe it or not the Pontiac guys will loosen both rockers closing both valves, then put rope in the chamber to stop the engine from turning while they torque the dampner bolt to 160# 😳😳😳. Thanks for watching and the feedback I appreciate it! JD

    • @StealthyWolfDaddyWerewolf
      @StealthyWolfDaddyWerewolf 4 года назад

      That makes sense, the 160 is probably to compress the rope to make sure it compacts against angled ports and keep the space you need to remove the keepers.

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  4 года назад +1

      Stealthy Wolf If your only servicing the valve springs or seals you won’t need to torque anything. You can just feed the rope into the cylinder to hold the valves. Yes holding the valves fully shut is the goal. 👍

    I have a 98 camaro that I’m swapping the cam in. I have 806 heads with older style valve seals where the seat and seal are separate. The cam kit I ordered came with the top design valve seal and I’m wondering if can use the top hat style with out issues, or should I just order older style seals?

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  2 года назад

      Yes you should be perfectly fine running the top hat style valve seal, don’t use any other Shims It should assemble fine. I never understood why GM chose to use a two piece locator/seal set up when the top hat is far superior? Who knows.
      The only time you see a two-piece locator and seal combo nowadays is if you’re running a dual spring, if you have a duel spring you have to run the two piece seal and locator.

    Is that intake manifold the Dorman 615-183? Did you notice any leak at the seems?

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  3 года назад +1

      I didn’t notice any vacuum leaks at the o-ring seals between the sections. I had tested for vacuum leaks many times because I never got this intake to idle and have low throttle response on my 4.8. I switched to a port matched regular truck intake and my 4.8 ran way better at all rpms!
      I think the huge plenum and runner design of the 615-183 intake might work better on a bigger engine 6.0+. JD

    question, im going to change all my valve seals while its in my suburban. i have the correct tools including air hose etc. Now when you say start off on number 8 and you have it tdc. you then have to remove rocker arms and rail.. but after changing valve stem seals i want to move down the line and do the rest. How do you know the next piston is at tdc without the rocker arms on?

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  2 месяца назад

      You can start on any cylinder you want as long as you guarantee. It’s at top dead center so there’s less volume to contend with. Plus, if something were to go wrong, the vowels won’t drop as far if the pistons at TDC
      Without the rocker arms on, you’re gonna have to be able to see the lifters via the push rod or find a way to use a straw through the spark plug hole to be able to feel when the Pistons at top dead center

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  2 года назад +2

      50-60+ should be fine unless you have really bad ring seal. If you try too much pressure it’ll start to rotate the engine so you’ll know it’s to high. JD

    my number one cylinder is giving me problems with fouling spark plugs. I will do a compression check but i assume this is the valve seals that I am having problems with. would you agree that if my compression check is good this is what is causing all the carbon buildup and spark knoking i get?

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  Год назад

      If the spark plug is oil fouling but it has good compression numbers it could be valve seals. Normally a bad valve seal will cause a smoky startup from the seal seeping.
      Also check your coil isn’t going bad and verify there’s no issue with the PCV valve pulling oil into the intake manifold.
      An old trick, swap the coils between two cylinders and see if the issue follows the coil. JD

      Both valves on the cylinder have to be closed. Once you remove the rocker arms the valves will be closed.

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  3 года назад +3

      Make sure the piston is a TDC for each set of springs/cylinder so if you have an issue the valves can’t physically drop all the way into the cylinder.
      I’ve always used 80-100# of air pressure where my regulator stays.
      I think your question brings up a good point; what would be the minimum acceptable air pressure? I don’t know for sure if you put to much air pressure in the engine could try to rotate?
      If you have a cylinder you can’t get the air hooked up don’t hesitate to use the rope trick to hold the valves up. JD

      I would assume no, not if you do it like he did here. You should just remove the spark plug and plug the spark plug hole with your finger. Rotate the crank till you feel the pressure push against your finger. That's the compression stroke wait till it reaches the top and the valve height is even and your at tdc roughly.
