    Improved Comfortable Manhattan:
    Build in mixing glass
    .5 oz or 15 ml. Dry Vermouth
    1.5 oz or 45 ml. Southern Comfort
    Crack ice and stir
    Dash of bitters
    Strain into glass
    Garnish with a cherry
    Smooth Collins:
    Build in glass
    Juice of a quarter of a lemon
    1.5 oz. or 45 ml. Southern Comfort
    Add ice and stir
    Top with 7-up
    Comfort Old Fashioned:
    Build in glass
    .5 tsp of sugar
    1 dash of angostura bitters
    .5 oz. or 15 ml. Sparkling Water
    1.5 oz. or 45 ml. Southern Comfort
    Add ice
    Garnish with lemon twist, orange slice and cherry
    Comfort Sour:
    Build in shaker
    .5 tsp sugar
    .5 oz. or 15 ml. Lemon Juice
    1.5 oz. or 45 ml. Southern Comfort

    Video request: Fixing past traumas. Find some semi-cursed drinks from past episodes and try to fix them.
    I don't think anyone can make a good Eldermancy, or good tapeworm, but I really like the idea of finding some of the potentially good drinks like the Dill Akvavit Malort from Wronger Customers or the Red Moco Cooler from Doc-tails, and making them better. Maybe as a channel anniversary episode?

    I absolutely love Meredith. I'm a long time fan of the channel, ever since the previous format hosted by younger and saner Greg, but Meredith has been featured more and more over time and I think her commentary and contributions add a lot to the videos by creating contrast and by making it a conversation not between Greg and us, but between Greg and Meredith *and* us, back and forth. It makes the dynamic more... dynamic and I really like it.

Like, having one of these sprinkled throughout is perfect. I just feel like I haven’t seen you have full episodes of enjoyment and creativity for a while.     A place I used to work at when I was younger, almost all of my co-workers loved southern comfort. So I bought a bottle and tried what I class as the single worst liquor I have ever tasted. And lost a lot of respect for the younger co-workers who told me it is amazing.
    As for the drinks: I blame the amount that people used to smoke. Must have had no taste left.

    I recall finding a bottle of stuff labeled "Southern Comfort" in my basement, something we got from an uncle who passed away and had that in his basement.
    Right, so we tried a little and it was actually pretty good?
    But it was like a very small, old bottle with a yellowed label, so it might have been an old version of what they call southern comfort now.
    I can see if I can get a picture of it somewhere.
    Edit: I don't have it anymore it seems, but it had this paper seal on top of the bottlecap, and it was more like a flask instead of a full on bottle.
    It was also VERY alcoholic, like near 50% alcohol.

      yeah, pre-1974 it was something like a peach bourbon with a little bit of cinnamon and vanilla. It has changed a LOT over the years, much like a mid century old fashioned is kind of horrifying if you are expecting a good old fashioned

    In Wisconsin, we definitely do Southern Comfort old fashioned. Old fashioned's in the area (Southern Comfort or otherwise) also often contained either club soda/7-up/sour soda too so I guess the sparkling water tracks

    I've found more diverse pickings in old drink recipe books from Seagram's and especially Ronrico Rum from the 40s. Most of the 70s mixing manuals are, well, exactly what you have here.

    In college, before I grew a palate for beer, I participated in the "century club" (one shot of beer per minute for 100 minutes) by taking one shot of Southern Comfort every 8 minutes.
    It did not end well.
    I still occasionally drink Southern Comfort, though. SoCo and lime, SoCo and cranberry juice.

    I want to thank you for improving my aweness of cocktails. My husband and I recently holidayed and had cocktails with dinner each night. One night the cocktail wasn't ' right' but I was able to explain why in part because of lessons learnt from How2Drink and Greg.

    We have that Spirit of '76 Happy Hour Barguide booklet! Found it in my grandmother's basement where it had been sitting untouched for 40 years or so. We have since made many cocktails from it, most pretty bad. Never thought I would see it promoted in a video. Excellent work as usual, Greg!

    I also started buying Southern Comfort bottles in college as my dumb "this is my drink" bottle. After recently seeing them at grocery store checkout lines along with Fireball, I tried one and boy I swear, even though it was crap back then, I really think they changed the formula. Just the mouth feel and consistency seems so much cheaper and fake.

      Depending on your age, they did. Was originally cheap whiskey with flavoring, then I think mid nineties to early teens they switched to "neutral spirit", aka vodka, with flavoring. Then changed back, about the same time flavored whiskeys were starting to get real popular.

      They have changed it several times and made it worse every time. It's gone from a decent whisky base to a neutral spirit base, back to whisky base but the worst whisky imaginable.

    I got one of those mixed drink a day calendars when I turned 21, and the only drink I recall from it was called a Lazer Beam which was 2 oz. of SoCo and then some amount of cranberry juice over ice. I recall liking it.

    I'm still pushing the "Slow Comfort" as a drink that Greg needs to try. It's equal parts Sloe Gin and Southern Comfort mixed on ice and topped with Orange Juice. I have no clue on what glass it should go in because I've only ever had it in solo cups, but I quite enjoy the color and the taste.

      I think that’s mor commonly called a “slow comfortable screw”, but I much prefer your version. Slow comfort sounds less like “quickie in a club bathroom” than the original

    I saw the title, went, "ah yes, bad cocktails from the old times", and then found it was just "bad cocktails because SoCo is bad". Which is fair. I'm just sorry you had to go through this. Also, there was no egg in that sour, and that makes me less than happy.

    I used to make a drink I called the Rotten Apple out of frozen sour apple pucker and kraken rum, and any time Greg talks about something tasting like cough syrup it conjures memories of knocking back shots of that stuff… The green used to sit on the bottom and the rum floated on top like the brown spot on an apple that has turned

    Honestly, a fun episode could be inviting an older mixologist on, someone who was mixing in the 60s or 70s and just mix drinks with them. Either have them give you names of drinks, or commonly used ingredients and seeing what you can make

    I’ve got my own souther comfort cocktail, called Sherman’s March: it’s 1 part Southern Comfort or Peach Schnapps if you prefer, 2 parts FireBall or any other Cinnamon Whiskey, splash of Angostura Bitters or two, and garnished with chili powder, Cinnamon, nutmeg, and optionally with mint, and served over ice

    The "Old Fashioned" seems like it was a twist of the wisconsin old fashioned rather than the regular old fashioned, with the orange slices+cherries as well as carbonation

    But next time, like, explain what Southern Comfort is? I thought it was a magazine, or a furniture store, before I saw the bottle with Southern Comfort written on it.. And taste it on its own first, to explain the flavor profile, and if the cocktails are bad, or the alcohol itself is bad (or both!)

      If you have a bottle from the 70s, yes. Just SC and club soda was very good. Unfortunately what they make today is nothing like what it used to be.

      Egg Nog (Hood or another decent non-alcoholic brand) and SoCo is actually decent together. Though I haven't tried that in years, so who knows if SoCo is just that vile now.

    I like SoCo well enough, but it is kinda hard to use in a cocktail. It either doesn't play well with other spirits or gets drowned out to the point that you might as well be using a regular whiskey. Martin's Rum Orange Punch is a nice winter drink, though.

    Used to make a drink with southern comfort called the Scarlett O’Hara
    2 ounces so co
    1/2 lime juice
    2-4 ounces of cranberry juice
    Always was a good simple drink to make

    That Collins wasn't ever gonna taste right, they changed the recipe of 7up sometime in the last 20 years.
    It used to be its own thing, but now it's just Sprite.
    Also the whole HFC instead of sugar thing that came about in '80s.
    You'd have to use Mexican 7up to actually taste what it was supposed to taste like.
    Also, awful lotta lemon in these....I've heard of SoCo & lime, but not SoCo & lemon....

      you typically use lemon for whiskey drinks and since southern comfort is whiskey based it makes sense.

    I'm working my way through a half-gallon plastic bottle of SoCo I was gifted (waste not want not!). For me, I found the best way to get it down is in coffee, with a little cream and simple syrup or agave.👊👍

    I have a drink combo for you: diet mountain dew and unsweetened iced tea tastes surprisingly like beer. This was in highschool at the soda fountain at a gas station, so it could be that I just didn't have a good grasp of what beer tasted like and it could also be that the iced tea was fermenting a little in the big containers they kept it in.

    I almost always despise advertisements in any form. But, damn! That endorsement of Bright Cellars was like watching a pro DM live out an NPC so to the brim, I had to watch it a second time! I cracked up so hard I was thinking to myself, "Do I need this service?" I'm willing to wager a dragon's weight in gold that you're one hell of a treat at the table! I even caught myself chipping in the second time watching in a pompous accent. "Oh! Right you are, sire! Tis' a lovely drop of Chiraz you've selected this evening! **sips loudly** Absolutely wonderful, like faeries dancing on the tip of the tongue, good sir! Such excellent taste!" I almost dragged myself out to the courtyard to guillotine myself! I'm still chuckling even as I write this. I give you two thumbs up for that performance and they ought to double whatever they're paying you right now!🤣🤣🤣🤘

    It's been 15 years since the first and only time I tried Southern Comfort and I can still remember the taste clearly. There is absolutely no way to make it good, though always a treat to see how you react to the drinks.
