Drinks from the Spanish Flu | How to Drink

  • Let's look at the drinks that were popular way back in 1918! This seemed relevant only last week when I shot it! Bail Fund: bit.ly/3dwyRiU NAACP LDF: bit.ly/2AAGlTs
In 1918 the Spanish Flu is ripping across the planet and folks are in fact wearing masks, practicing social distancing, having school outdoors, and being pissed about it, and also yes, having the occasional drink. This episode is all about the drinks that would have been popular while that was all going on. Is it exhaustive? Nope. In fact, the Caipirhinia should have been on this list, but my research uncovered enough that I had to spin it off into it's entire own episode, stay tuned for that one next week.
    Grasshopper
This drink was most likely invented at Tujague's in New Orleans sometime in or just before 1918. Originally a simple affair of equal parts Creme de Menthe, Heavy Cream, and Creme de Cacao it has in the intervening years gone on to become a far more indulgent affair, often involving ice cream. I think I'll be covering its evolution and variations in another episode, for now, let's just look at the original.
1 oz. or 30 ml. Heavy Cream
1 oz. or 30 ml. Creme de Menthe
1 oz. or 30 ml. Creme de Cacao
    Shake over ice, strain
    garnish with grated nutmeg
    White Lady
Next up is the White lady, but not that White Lady. The name of this drink may call to mind a Harry MacElhone cocktail involving gin and egg white. Instead this is the earlier Harry MacElhone (I know...) cocktail involving equal parts lemon, creme de menthe and curaçao
1 oz. or 30 ml. Lemon Juice
1 oz. or 30 ml. Creme De Menthe
1 oz. or 30 ml. Curaçao or Triple Sec
    Shake & Strain
    Negroni
The Negroni was invented in 1918 and caught on like wildfire, so it strikes me as belonging on the list. It's also a drink I've made previously, and I stand by that recipe. It is after all the standard.
1 oz. or 30 ml. Campari
1 oz. or 30 ml. Sweet Vermouth
1 oz. or 30 ml. London Dry Gin
    stir over ice
    garnish with orange twist
    Singapore Sling
Now, Raffles claims to have invented the Singapore Sling at it's Long Bar right now this time, but according to David Wondrich, it was probably already popular for years beforehand as the "Pink Sling". Whatever the case, it was certainly popular in 1918 and is closely associated to this time period. I've made it on the show previously but I've updated my recipe since then.
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Lemon Juice
.5 oz. or 15 ml. pineapple juice
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Cherry Heering
.25 oz. or 8 ml. Benedictine
2 oz. or 60 ml. London Dry Gin
    Shake it, strain it
    top with club soda
    Ward Eight (and a Half)
Supposedly this drink was invented at the end of the 1800's but by 1918 it would have had time to catch on. It's also not very good. I made it previously on the show and instantly had to remake it because I found it awful. My "fixed" version is presented here, it's very very close to the original, just better. I call it a Ward Eight and a Half
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Grenadine
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Lemon Juice
.25 oz. or 8 ml. Blood Orange Juice
2 oz. or 60 ml. Rye
    one egg white
    dry shake
    shake & strain
    Garnish with Bitters Dots
Slowly but surely, I'm starting a mailing list so that I'm not fully dependent on YT's algorithmized notifications system. If you'll sign up, I promise not to abuse your generosity, or sell your info to anyone. It's over on the blog right here:

Just speaking for myself, but this an appreciated message. I just started watching your show less than a month ago but I could see that you have, at the very least, an awareness of the plight people of color have faced, and at best you have a well labored arc toward justice. I’ve been watching my RUclips Subscriptions to see who would join in, who would risk their platform and their privilege for the sake of this beautiful and oppressed minority that America was built on. I’m not shaming or calling out the channels that don’t take that risk but I do want to thank the ones that do.The only thing I can add to your message is that I hope myself and others are only coming to your channel for a brief respite from this outcry, they deserve to be heard.

Aside from the obvious escapism that watching a grown man nerd out while making cocktails provides, my southern mother always said "nothing brings people together faster than a good meal and a strong drink." And I think we all need some cocktail content just as much as we need things to change at the moment.

"If you want me to keep my opinions to myself you can get bent" Salute Brother. Tell it like you see it. Churchill A nasty piece of work? Yup. As black as he's painted? Meh...there's a lot attributed to him that isn't true (Ordering the Army to fire upon striking miners? Didn't happen, he actually advised against deploying troops but local Government called them in anyway) I'd like to see the provenance for all the quotes in that article plus there was strategic thinking involved in the grain shipments to Europe (It wasn't a nice decision to have to make, either way bad things were likely to happen) His attitude towards India and Ghandi in particular was pretty bad but, sadly, of his time. Where people get the idea we British think he was a paragon of democracy however eludes me. He was the right man for the job during the War, the other times he was PM, yeah, he was an unpleasant, self promoting, fickle, uncaring, clinically depressed alcoholic.

The United Kingdom might be one of the older European democracies but even in its name it cannot be said to be a true democracy. Not when there is a system that has unelected officials (peers) that have the potential to amend legislation to their own unaccountable ends, and certainly not when it is one of the few developed countries that did not enact land ownership reform. Any other leader other than Churchill would have been appropriate during the second world war - all that was needed was someone who would no longer stomach appeasement. His attempts at shaping the post war order set in motion events that have landed us in today's situations.
From the meddling in the Middle East to the devastation of sub-Saharan Africa to his posturing in the Cold War that would have the world perched on the precipice of nuclear annihilation, we are, all of us, weighed down by the shadows of history. Handing over the remnants of the British Empire over to the Americans has hardly proved his hunch that the Yanks would be good global stewards either.
But perhaps his vice is one of the ways someone can come to terms with the world as it is today. It is as Lenin said: "There are decades where nothing happens, and weeks where decades happen." The post war liberal order is unravelling before our eyes. What comes after is in our hands. Maybe the only way to deal with this acceleration, is to slow it down through the lens of a bottle of spirits. Clarification from stupefaction.

Love this ep and can't wait to see the Grasshopper episode. After hearing your tasting notes on the White Lady though I looked up other recipes of it from 1919 and stumbled upon an article by Esquire which mention Harry MacElhone blending it as "cointreau (2/3), crème de menthe (1/6), and lemon juice (1/6)" - so I tried that hoping it would be less lemony. I didn't have cointreau but I subbed the sweeter triple sec. It's quite sweet and very delicious actually. The sharp cooling odor of the mint is there and it's neither overly mint or orange. Very smooth.

In New Orleans we pronounce it just like "two jacks." I'm sure that's not the correct French pronunciation but we've anglacized many pronunciations here. But, you're close enough. They make a great aviator coctail there too.

that would be pretty much the same in continental french, except lose the 'd' sound at the beginning of 'Jack'

I think the problem for those not french (I did hesitate ....Americans, English speakers, white people *facepalm*) is the G in the sign would normally be a C, and you'd more be able to see that it's two Jacues .. two Jacks .. I was just thinking it was started by two men; french and either they were named Jacques, or it's the irony of Frenchies being known as 'Jacques' to racists. oop, I mean other language speakers

I am 30 sec into the video... I paused it there. I wanted to write this for everyone at How To Drink: We want you to keep making the videos. With all that is going on in the world and our country, we NEED that time that you give us as entertainment and knowledge. We need ways to "escape" from normal life, even if just for a few minutes. We enjoy the videos and please keep making them. For those that pray, please do so for our world and country. Those that do not pray, please just keep a positive thought in mind about our world and country. Thank you Greg and rest of How To Drink team.

Long time viewer, love this channel, super happy you continued making episodes. One of few things helping people stay sane.
What’s funny is that I can’t drink, I have a weird alcohol intolerance so alcohol burns my skin, no joke. Vodka, beer, wine, hand sanitizer, even the tiny amounts of alcohol in soy sauce have given me chemical burns. I have to check literally everything for alcohol. But this is still my favorite channel ever, absolutely love it thanks so much.
