I guess the wig in the current thumbnail (lest thee there is a alternate one to come in the near future) was too itchy to wear for the entire session?
EDIT: the most absolutely unhinged Bright Cellars ad yet. I'm dying.
6:49 The best Collins far and away is Bootsy.
I’ll watch anything in that leisure suit. As for the content, I’m sure the 70’s had all sorts of weird drinking gadgets. If you can get your hands on any of those, I’m sure 70’s Greg would have an awful time with them!
I’ve got a quick question for you. Would you ever do a remake of The Blockbuster from the series called The Pacific?
Would love to see your take on the way it is in the series and then how you would fix it.
Thanks I’m advance also any news on your own cocktail book with all your drinks you have created over the years??
Its a good movie though...
I like how at the start of this channel, Greg was “hey guys, today we're making something nice (: Have a great day!” And now it's mostly “why do you force me to drink this hellspawn of a concoction, I hate all liquid”
Well, the possibilites for good drinks is limited. Horrid garbage is an infinite space.
Meredith is a perfect foil
@@xyzpdq1122 yeah, its nice to have another person to try the weird drinks. I kinda wish they had someone with a sweet tooth or just a less refined palate, since both of them often complain that a drink is too sweet.
The natural evolution.
@@zakarymoninger7845 I volunteer as a sweet drink enjoyer!
Just have to figure out how to get the drinks across the atlantic ocean...
My favorite unexpected surprise from watching HTD for a long time is the emergence of character bits. You can really tell Greg has fun with it, and it makes him all the more fun to watch.
came to say this. i'm smitten with his stuffy wine enthusiast aristocrat. please: crossover with Arin from Game Grumps' book writing uncle!
Agreed
Hospitality is the backbone of the aristocracy, that's what I always say! HAHAHA - I died at this.
Greg: always says he doesn't like very sweet drinks
Also Greg: absolutely ravishes the most toxicly sweet jar of cherries known to man kind
Maraschino cherries are always the exception to "I don't like sweet"
"Doesn't like sweet drinks" isn't the same as "doesn't like sweet things." :D
I like sweets, but I don't like honey baked ham!
He likes sugar as a taste but gets headaches from sugar very easily, probably diabetes I guess
@@roan9914 Eh, some people just get headaches when they consume a lot of sugar quickly.
I'm diabetic and I don't have that problem. I'm more likely to get a stomach ache.
Thank you Bright Cellar for doing fine work to bring wine to the hands of the people but also, most of all, for creating aristocrat wino Greg. Lord, that was a character and a half, haha.
Screw the rest of the episode, the Bright Cellers promo was hilarious. "Other expressions of a British nature!"
"PREPARE THE CANNONS!" got me
Best commercial I’ve seen in ages! 😂
Indeed. Jolly good show, Greg! :D
Never thought I'd hear Greg's Boris Johnson.
Yes, definitely well done and amusing. I actually watched all of it.
I absolutely love Meredith. I'm a long time fan of the channel, ever since the previous format hosted by younger and saner Greg, but Meredith has been featured more and more over time and I think her commentary and contributions add a lot to the videos by creating contrast and by making it a conversation not between Greg and us, but between Greg and Meredith *and* us, back and forth. It makes the dynamic more... dynamic and I really like it.
Could be maybe a podcast soon too
Seconded
@@howtodrink Yes, please!
@@howtodrink - That would be really interesting, I would love to see it come to life. Is something along those lines already in the works or just a random idea?

Video request: Fixing past traumas. Find some semi-cursed drinks from past episodes and try to fix them.
I don't think anyone can make a good Eldermancy, or good tapeworm, but I really like the idea of finding some of the potentially good drinks like the Dill Akvavit Malort from Wronger Customers or the Red Moco Cooler from Doc-tails, and making them better. Maybe as a channel anniversary episode?
I think the Eldermancy's spirit could be redeemed by substituting the ingredients for each letter. The 'A' could be Angostura Bitters.
@@Janoha17 Taskmaster (a hilarious show) once assigned the comedian-contestants to make 'an alphabet meal'. I always thought they should have made a really complicated cocktail. That would be like the next level after the Eldermancy.
I really like this idea
Malibu pineapple old fashioned with actual malibu
WAIT I'VE GOT IT. Have Orient Express Greg make Train Cocktails! We can revisit the 20th Century, an actually delightful cocktail!
No one has ever measured the amount of Southern Comfort going into a cocktail before this video.
Man, Greg really likes his cherries. If he ever does an unboxing video or something, I might just have to send him an industrial Sam's club sized case or something
i was just thinking about doing this😂
Sidenote: we made some home made burbon soaked bing cherries for cocktails and they're so damn good!
He’d die of accuse diabetes inside a week
Why do you want to murder Greg by giving him diah-beet-us?
You can gel the paint can sized tin of Luxardo cherries for like $100
Would love to see a series where you make a cocktail for every state. No research, just something from the top of your head featuring all the stereotypes we know and love
This is a great idea!!
Florida's is called a "blue margarita" but instead of just using blue curacao as your orange liqueur, it's actually a coupe full of crystal meth (with a salted rim).
The Bright Cellars character is like if they tried to push the Hunter Hearst Hemsley gimmick during the Hulkamania era of pro wrestling...and I could watch it for hours. Thank you for making the ads fun, Greg!
That's such an apt description! Snuffed-up 1830s aristocrat wino Greg is amazing and I can't wait for more Bright Cellars ads in the future. That character is like the distillate of Matt Berry.
I'm going to be completely honest, I usually tap through your ad reads. That was f#&*king marvelous. Whatever a Bright Cellars sponsorship is worth, you were underpaid, sir.
"Prepare the cannons!!"
His rich guy laugh is on point lol.
It was like an 18th century Macho Man Randy Savage. Absolutely marvelous
Greg's ad reads puts all other RUclipsrs to shame
Boy, I hope you also sat through the Yellowstone ones, it was one of the most creative series of ad reads I’ve seen on RUclips in a good long while
Please, for Greg's sanity and health, let him have a few episodes where he makes some good drinks. He deserves it.
My only "contact" with SC was circa '86 when my mother came home from a Rockabilly weekender and promptly threw up all over the kitchen floor. Grandma was not amused and eight y/o me, with, perhaps, wisdom beyond my years, vowed never to touch the stinking stuff.
...and since then, you've never touched that pile of vomit.
@@JohannesWiberg Well of course not. I was a male of the 1980s. That was women's work.
Greg's voice during that Brightcellars bit is now going to be an npc i force my dnd party to visit at least every session
That Ad read and character 😂 I know that Greg's talked D&D in a few of the other episodes, but characters like this loud, blustering wine-loving aristocrat really make me believe Greg is an incredible DM.
Week 7
I would love to see a Cuba Libre matrix
Different cokes like bottled, canned, glass, or fountain and different rums
And while we're there, we have to try Mexican Coke, Pepsi, RC, and/or other popular colas
The one matrix with 42 variations looked like it almost killed him
@@sethralston5825 ah but now he has a spit bucket so he doesn't give himself alcohol poisoning... When he remembers it exists
I can stand behind this.
@@ashrowan2143 I dont have a lot of faith in the spit bucket, and in this video it looked like the cherries were the inly solid food he had. RIP his liver.
Two weeks ago, I was in a liquor store buying some neccesaries and I wondered if I should pick up a bottle of SoCo, since I had made it into my sixth decade without ever having tasted it. You have answered my question quite thoroughly. Thank you for your sacrifice.
I want to say it was invented by rectifying bad bourbon with crystallized candy
It’s not bad 😂 I find it goes good with Amaretto but as you can imagine that drink is crazy sweet
Greg, I want you to know that the Bright Cellars ad read this week had me laughing so hard that my housemate came downstairs to my office to see what the hell I was laughing at because it interrupted her work call upstairs. I don't have a joke here, it's just a thing that happened and I thought you should know.
Nice to see a How to Eat Cherries episode for once. Sorely missed!
Back in my young and foolish high school days we used to drink southern comfort mixed with mountain dew all the time. It was super sweet and almost tasted like a vaguely enjoyable cough medicine.
Hey dude. Love the show. Favorite cocktail channel by far personally. The “hot garbage” episodes are awesome, but I miss seeing a positive Greg. Like, having one of these sprinkled throughout is perfect. I just feel like I haven’t seen you have full episodes of enjoyment and creativity for a while. Definitely miss the movie and show based drinks. Hope all is well, man!
The drunken aristocrat bit was glorious! Almost Rowley Birkin level! (Look that one up!) Thank you for your sacrifice - SC is foul stuff. I like the idea of seeking out weird old recipes - maybe do some from other decades? 80s/early 90s would have some true horrors I'm sure.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm expecting drama kid energy again :)
Edit: 4:35 You did not disappoint
That BC ad was utterly unhinged and I love it.
He needs to do a Victorian era episode so we can have more of whatever that character is
This is mad, I discovered your channel yesterday, 2 hours ago I watched your video, making drinks with 3 of your worst bottles (with SoCo) which I fully disagreed with!! Closed the video, went to the shop, came back, and this gets uploaded!??
I don't know if I should be scared or happy, either way, subscribing 🤣
A place I used to work at when I was younger, almost all of my co-workers loved southern comfort. So I bought a bottle and tried what I class as the single worst liquor I have ever tasted. And lost a lot of respect for the younger co-workers who told me it is amazing.
As for the drinks: I blame the amount that people used to smoke. Must have had no taste left.
one of my coworkers was an old guy who loved the stuff. like he would drink It straight on ice. ick
It is possibly the worst alcohol I ever put in my mouth...
Once again Greg putting himself and his liver through all the horrors mankind can imagine. Not the Hero we wanted, but the Hero we truly deserved.
Still looking forward to videos where Greg enjoys his cocktails again, though this was a fun look into older cocktail times (even if they were sponsored times).
I recall finding a bottle of stuff labeled "Southern Comfort" in my basement, something we got from an uncle who passed away and had that in his basement.
Right, so we tried a little and it was actually pretty good?
But it was like a very small, old bottle with a yellowed label, so it might have been an old version of what they call southern comfort now.
I can see if I can get a picture of it somewhere.
Edit: I don't have it anymore it seems, but it had this paper seal on top of the bottlecap, and it was more like a flask instead of a full on bottle.
It was also VERY alcoholic, like near 50% alcohol.
yeah, pre-1974 it was something like a peach bourbon with a little bit of cinnamon and vanilla. It has changed a LOT over the years, much like a mid century old fashioned is kind of horrifying if you are expecting a good old fashioned
“Southern Comfort just poisons everything it touches” 😂 - great line!
A stinky old tire filled with "hot bananas" is now officially my favorite description for anything ever described. This kind of self-imposed punishment needs to stop Greg. It is extremely funny however to watch.
One of the best mixology channels. Idea: Try a new video based around ouzo, which is also super easy to make.
Greg I hereby give you permission to make a whole episode about drinks you actually like. You've earned it.
I skip many ads, but honestly yours are hilarious and this one was a particular gem. Love your characters and voices, honestly!
Your ad segments are becoming more and more unhinged 🤣🤣🤣
Looking at these, knowing what other monstrosities the kitchens of the seventies produced, and that Venture Bros was heavily inspired by the cartoons of the sixties and seventies, suddenly a lot of the logic behind Rusty's Doctails begins to make sense.
Hey! Big fan of your channel. Lots of sober industry folk out there looking to keep up with new product/ideas, and your tasting notes are consistently incredible. Much love!
I want to thank you for improving my aweness of cocktails. My husband and I recently holidayed and had cocktails with dinner each night. One night the cocktail wasn't ' right' but I was able to explain why in part because of lessons learnt from How2Drink and Greg.
This channel is fun, informative, and very entertaining.
In college, before I grew a palate for beer, I participated in the "century club" (one shot of beer per minute for 100 minutes) by taking one shot of Southern Comfort every 8 minutes.
It did not end well.
I still occasionally drink Southern Comfort, though. SoCo and lime, SoCo and cranberry juice.
I also started buying Southern Comfort bottles in college as my dumb "this is my drink" bottle. After recently seeing them at grocery store checkout lines along with Fireball, I tried one and boy I swear, even though it was crap back then, I really think they changed the formula. Just the mouth feel and consistency seems so much cheaper and fake.
Depending on your age, they did. Was originally cheap whiskey with flavoring, then I think mid nineties to early teens they switched to "neutral spirit", aka vodka, with flavoring. Then changed back, about the same time flavored whiskeys were starting to get real popular.
They have changed it several times and made it worse every time. It's gone from a decent whisky base to a neutral spirit base, back to whisky base but the worst whisky imaginable.
Can I just say that you have some of my favorite ad segments of Al of RUclips! This particular one is absolute gold! Definitely in my top 5 ads of all time!
In Wisconsin, we definitely do Southern Comfort old fashioned. Old fashioned's in the area (Southern Comfort or otherwise) also often contained either club soda/7-up/sour soda too so I guess the sparkling water tracks
Today on How to Drink, we are going to find out how many cherries Greg can eat before he throws up
I've found more diverse pickings in old drink recipe books from Seagram's and especially Ronrico Rum from the 40s. Most of the 70s mixing manuals are, well, exactly what you have here.
We have that Spirit of '76 Happy Hour Barguide booklet! Found it in my grandmother's basement where it had been sitting untouched for 40 years or so. We have since made many cocktails from it, most pretty bad. Never thought I would see it promoted in a video. Excellent work as usual, Greg!
From amazing characters to legitimate cocktail recipes, this channel has stumbled upon the secret to making ads that I don't even think about skipping through
While I normally like your sponsor ads, they're usually pretty cool (especially Ranger Greg), this BrightCellars ad had me CRYING with laughter!
I saw the title, went, "ah yes, bad cocktails from the old times", and then found it was just "bad cocktails because SoCo is bad". Which is fair. I'm just sorry you had to go through this. Also, there was no egg in that sour, and that makes me less than happy.
Greatest ad reads by any youtuber. I can’t skip them. Its impossible.
The production quality of your videos is excellent. This could easily be a segment on TV
Honestly, a fun episode could be inviting an older mixologist on, someone who was mixing in the 60s or 70s and just mix drinks with them. Either have them give you names of drinks, or commonly used ingredients and seeing what you can make
Maybe im crazy but Greg was rocking those big ol glasses
Sat here drinking my southern comfort and lemonade (my favourite drink currently) while you rip into southern comfort is very enjoyable
I got one of those mixed drink a day calendars when I turned 21, and the only drink I recall from it was called a Lazer Beam which was 2 oz. of SoCo and then some amount of cranberry juice over ice. I recall liking it.
Hey Greg, did you delete your mentor's video on 70's cocktails? I tried to look for it after your recent disco cocktails and couldn't find it. Me and my brother named our jam band "Sex Toboggan" because of it!
Search the channel for UHF
I have an old early 90's cocktail book, and it has some abysmal recipes I'd love to see Greg react to, like there's some true horrors in there
Had 3 Murders on that trip....Marvelous Time! I will never miss another one of Greg's Ads.
How many youtubers make the sponsored segment the highlight of the video?
Honestly incredible stuff Greg, please continue (and I'd love to see the return of Ranger Greg!)
I actually make a sorta Comfort Sour for my friends who don’t care about cocktails. It’s alright I guess
2 oz. SoCo
1 oz. Lemon Juice
0.25 oz. Rich Demarara Syrup
1 Egg White
Dry Shake
Shake with Ice
Angostura Garnish
Lemon Twust
I'm still pushing the "Slow Comfort" as a drink that Greg needs to try. It's equal parts Sloe Gin and Southern Comfort mixed on ice and topped with Orange Juice. I have no clue on what glass it should go in because I've only ever had it in solo cups, but I quite enjoy the color and the taste.
I think that’s mor commonly called a “slow comfortable screw”, but I much prefer your version. Slow comfort sounds less like “quickie in a club bathroom” than the original
@@JasminMiettunen funny enough I learned of the drink at a swingers club and the name I use is what the bar tender called it when I asked for something using Sloe Gin.
@@novaiscool1 that is so ridiculously funny, that’s like if a swingers club served sex on the beach and called it sunset beach or something
Thanks for taking several for the team
Oh my mom collects these recipe booklets. Not just cocktail booklet but baking and barbecue too. Dating back to the 50's. They're an endless source of wtf for me.
It's time for the wine! That was fantastic, anyone should hire you to do RPGs and if not...advertising! I don't care about wine at all but you made it awesome!
Thank you!
The cocktails you'd find in the hands of Disco Stu.
I don't know if Brian Blessed was what you were going for with the Bright Cellars ad but that's what I got from it and it was so good
What I was going for, is that I had nothing written, and a smoking jacket, and I wanted to call it a day.
Aristocracy Greg was wonderful. I hope your throat is okay after doing it. I hope our friends at Bright Cellars appreciated it
The "Old Fashioned" seems like it was a twist of the wisconsin old fashioned rather than the regular old fashioned, with the orange slices+cherries as well as carbonation
You make skipping through ads absolutely delightful; seeing only half a second, every five seconds, of that smoking jacket act was hilarious, especially since the last bit I saw was the "HAH HAH" XD (sorry for skipping through your ads, though c__c )
I used to make a drink I called the Rotten Apple out of frozen sour apple pucker and kraken rum, and any time Greg talks about something tasting like cough syrup it conjures memories of knocking back shots of that stuff… The green used to sit on the bottom and the rum floated on top like the brown spot on an apple that has turned
I’ve got my own souther comfort cocktail, called Sherman’s March: it’s 1 part Southern Comfort or Peach Schnapps if you prefer, 2 parts FireBall or any other Cinnamon Whiskey, splash of Angostura Bitters or two, and garnished with chili powder, Cinnamon, nutmeg, and optionally with mint, and served over ice
That seems like a wake up drink
Is this meant to be good? Or us this one of thise joke/dare drinks? Cinnamon whiskey, chili powder and mint?
I don't drink, though I do appreciate the craft of a good cocktail. However, I'm mostly here for Greg's characters and costumes, and for Meredith torturing him.
I too loved this and even the ad! I too think it'd be cool to see some of the very first drinks redone, or a couple Historic Drinks that Greg might get to really enjoy, or maybe some highly regional cocktails from around the world or the USA- something nice for the poor man. Sir, we appreciate what you go through for us!
I almost always despise advertisements in any form. But, damn! That endorsement of Bright Cellars was like watching a pro DM live out an NPC so to the brim, I had to watch it a second time! I cracked up so hard I was thinking to myself, "Do I need this service?" I'm willing to wager a dragon's weight in gold that you're one hell of a treat at the table! I even caught myself chipping in the second time watching in a pompous accent. "Oh! Right you are, sire! Tis' a lovely drop of Chiraz you've selected this evening! **sips loudly** Absolutely wonderful, like faeries dancing on the tip of the tongue, good sir! Such excellent taste!" I almost dragged myself out to the courtyard to guillotine myself! I'm still chuckling even as I write this. I give you two thumbs up for that performance and they ought to double whatever they're paying you right now!🤣🤣🤣🤘
Ok but now I’m curious to see if you can make an actually good drink from southern comfort… 🤔
If you have a bottle from the 70s, yes. Just SC and club soda was very good. Unfortunately what they make today is nothing like what it used to be.
It's the worst piss in the world and it's only redeeming quality is ....
...
..
.
He did already in a video of 3 months ago or so
Egg Nog (Hood or another decent non-alcoholic brand) and SoCo is actually decent together. Though I haven't tried that in years, so who knows if SoCo is just that vile now.
@@Rikissimissimo you’re right 🤣 I thought I’d seen something like that but he brings out so many amazing videos it’s hard to keep track. SC is godawful stuff though 😐
That Collins wasn't ever gonna taste right, they changed the recipe of 7up sometime in the last 20 years.
It used to be its own thing, but now it's just Sprite.
Also the whole HFC instead of sugar thing that came about in '80s.
You'd have to use Mexican 7up to actually taste what it was supposed to taste like.
Also, awful lotta lemon in these....I've heard of SoCo & lime, but not SoCo & lemon....
you typically use lemon for whiskey drinks and since southern comfort is whiskey based it makes sense.
I'm working my way through a half-gallon plastic bottle of SoCo I was gifted (waste not want not!). For me, I found the best way to get it down is in coffee, with a little cream and simple syrup or agave.👊👍
I love you guys. Thank you!
The sour. You can really tell how excited Greg is to try that by how long he shakes. Love it. What else can we find that he hates? Lol. How diluted does SoCo need to be to be palatable for Greg?
While I do like seeing Greg miserable, I think this idea of 70s cocktails is worth revisiting with non-Southern Comfort based cocktails
Used to make a drink with southern comfort called the Scarlett O’Hara
2 ounces so co
1/2 lime juice
2-4 ounces of cranberry juice
Always was a good simple drink to make
Greg's character for the Bright Cellars ad reminded me of Winston Havelock from the mummy. Good stuff!
1st
You could have switched out the Southern Comfort for a whiskey you actually like and see if it tasted decent that way. Granted I find you torturing yourself funny so that works too 😂
Greg’s ad read was really giving Brian Blessed and I’m here for it
Back where I live (Croatia) we used to make a smooth collins all the time, without knowing it had a name! I love that drink, a even better variation of it is with sprite, it tastes like bubblegum to me
I hope we get some more "x Drinks Based on Fiction y", I'd hate to see this channel become just another reaction/challenge with 2 hosts channel.
Those pop culture episodes have been performing unbelievably poorly for a bit now. But it’s a format I’m returning to relatively soon. It might be coming back around- only way to find out is to test.
@@howtodrink maybe trying to do videos on things that are currently popular, like a new movie or show just came out, a new version of a game you've played before, etc. would do better since the interest around them is higher already? We love seeing you geek out about fiction and cocktails :)
Also, we love seeing you actually enjoy drinks and sharing your own wonderful recipes! You could include one “improved” drink in every torturous episode that you make to appease the algorithm gods.
I like SoCo well enough, but it is kinda hard to use in a cocktail. It either doesn't play well with other spirits or gets drowned out to the point that you might as well be using a regular whiskey. Martin's Rum Orange Punch is a nice winter drink, though.
Great episode as always!
But next time, like, explain what Southern Comfort is? I thought it was a magazine, or a furniture store, before I saw the bottle with Southern Comfort written on it.. And taste it on its own first, to explain the flavor profile, and if the cocktails are bad, or the alcohol itself is bad (or both!)
Ayy yo! I got a recommendation! Whole milk+bailey's+hazelnut bitters+coffee??+ Irish whiskey+ egg white(optional)
I love the videos as always, but I miss the music. I always enjoyed watching you mix accompanied by the great songs you picked. Are the old videos getting copyright struck for the songs in them?
When I make Glögg, I use Southern Comfort instead of brandy (or other spirit), oranges and sugar.
It's Tawney Port, Southern Comfort, raisins, cinnamon, cloves, slivered almonds. Simmer on low heat for a coupe hours, Strain and serve hot. After all the alcohol is evaporated I replace it with some Everclear. 2 small cups max per person.
It's very popular on a cold night around the holidays.
I have a drink combo for you: diet mountain dew and unsweetened iced tea tastes surprisingly like beer. This was in highschool at the soda fountain at a gas station, so it could be that I just didn't have a good grasp of what beer tasted like and it could also be that the iced tea was fermenting a little in the big containers they kept it in.
I have an absurd recipe book from a cocktail class I took in Detroit. All like Mai Tais full of orange and pineapple juice. I whip it out for parties sometimes.
SoCo reminds me of how old men’s aftershave smells. Like Aqua Velva mixed with Old spice. Just the smell gives me the pre-vom shivers.
the way your "bangs" twitched when you shook the comfort sour was hypnotizing
The only time my family would use southern comfort was pouring it into a big glass container and add frozen cherries and berries with other spices like cinnamon sticks, anise, etc. we would let it sit and give it as gifts for Christmas and it was “Grandma’s stomach soother”. People loved it. We would also do a version with wild Turkey.
I've seen a few mentions of like a spiced Christmas drink with Southern Comfort in the comments! Do you happen to have the recipe? I'm curious about how close your versions are 😄
@@JasminMiettunen No recipe, like all grandma's it was all done by memory but it was usually a bottle or two of SoCo or Wild Turkey, maybe some other alcohol in there (possibly cointreau or triple sec but a few cups or something), Frozen Cherries usually and possibly other berries/fruit depending on what your heart tells you (don't know if peaches would work but a peach based one would be delicious), a few cinnamon sticks, star anise...I feel like I'm missing some spices but those were the main ones...Then just let it sit in a large glass container for some months and then bottle it up and give it away. It was almost like a cordial or port; I don't know if the other Christmas drinks are served warm like mulled wine but ours was served room temp/cold.
I'd love to see a continuation of your series of Harry Potter potions/video game drinks/pop culture cocktails. Those are some of my favorite episodes.
