I just put in a $10,000 lawn and this info is priceless to me. When I saw the completed job and knew it was on me to take care of it the fear set in! I've subscribed and going to check out how to start leveling, Thanks so much.
You've spent $10,000 for grass? That's a lot of money! Would it have been much cheaper to plant new grass seed with starter fertilizer already mixed in and cover it lightly with soil or compost, instead of getting new sod? With grass seed, all you'll have to do is water it to keep the seeds moist (not soggy) until they fully germinated. It's a lot less maintenance required for grass seed than sod. Even though sod is real transplanted grass, there's nothing like planting grass seed from scratch onto a new or an already established, overseeded lawn.

Greatings from NE Oklahoma, neighbor! I JUST got sod down yesterday and today! They are coming once a day to water, but now I'm going to add an additional watering.
I installed sod three weeks ago today. It's Kentucky Bluegrass. I was so worried about the installation because we did it ourselves. And I watched and saved so many videos In terms of how to do it. This video is the best by far, even to the extent that I have deleted all other videos because you cover absolutely every question one would have regarding new sod. Thank you so much!

Davenport, Florida here i just put St. Augustine Floritan sod last week, Your video came up just in time. I wonder if your suggestions apply to my area as well. Thanks for posting,
I have been in the landscape management business in middle Georgia for 50 years. In that time fertilizer and herbicides have advanced immensely. They are safer and more long-lasting. I agree with your four-stage program for new lawn care. I would suggest that watering will depend partially on the time of the year, as sod is laid year-round here. The temperature in the 50's will affect watering differently than when it is in the 90's. That said, dormant grass will require less.
Yes, you’re absolutely right. Thank you for the feedback. It’s tough to get all the details in one video, so I’ve had that discussion in other videos about sod laid during different times of the year, especially when dormant. In fact, I just built a new house with dormant Bermuda laid and did this video recently, ruclips.net/video/i12A4Ochyvc/видео.html. Thanks again for watching and your input.
Good simple, advice thanks mate. Here in the UK we had a battle with some badgers straight after laying the new lawn, pulling up the new sod every other morning! It was carnage! Grass is very resilient and survived it however, it did mean a few extra weeks to root. Just gave it the first cut about 6 weeks in, and it's looking good. Nice rainy day to after the cut so should be good! 👍
Awesome. You're welcome. Thank you. Glad to hear your turf survived the badgers. Animals can make it frustrating sometimes, especially after all the hard work we put in. Enjoy those first cuts. Always feels good. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate you.
Awesome. Thank you. Congrats on his new crib. That’s exciting. I’ve got one nearing completion and will be starting over on a newly sodded Bermuda lawn. Here’s a vid I just did about it since the sod will be laid dormant…ruclips.net/video/i12A4Ochyvc/видео.html Hope that helps too. Thanks again.
Appreciate that! Drives me nuts how so many other folks are leading people down a false path of overnight perfection. Fact is, most of us don't have the time or money to make that happen. I'm building a new house this summer and will follow the same advice I gave in the video. Thank you for watching and commenting. Your support helps out a bunch!
@@BudgetLawns We are in the final stages of a remodel on our new home, and part of that was a new septic system install which nuked the back yard to scorched earth for the trenching and dirtwork. luckily our company was great and they agreed to set aside the deep fallow lome they dug out of the ground, and graded their work with that at the end of the job with skid steer so the soil is prime. Many videos show perfectly flat pro baseball field "after photos" at week four, which I have never seen no matter how well you screed and rake the soil. Thanks again and good luck on your new build.
I just got my front lawn resodded with icon zoysia. One thing i wasnt really told about is 1. To walk your lawn daily to catch possible fungus and disease early and 2. What to do when you notice fungus/disease. Because you water so much in the beginning it could cause fungus. But overall excellent content. I appreciate the mention of when to apply fert. The whole process should be enjoyable and stressing about ferting or applying too much isnt fun. Thanks again
You're welcome. Thank you. I appreciate your feedback. I never really worry about fungus. It's gonna happen. Having a bermuda lawn that grows so fast really helps to not worry about it because it can repair itself so quickly. You're gonna love that zoysia. Beautiful grass. Congrats on the new lawn!
Budget Lawns that makes sense. I know people in the south love st aug. and its so susceptible to anything and its temperamental. I love the lawn so much already! Ive only had it for 3 weeks. I just got my second mow and its such a pleasant mow. And the neighborhood dominance is apparent cause all my neighbors have st aug. any advice on keeping st aug out of zoysia?
I don't have any experience keeping one creeping grass out of another. Don's Lawns has bermuda and St. Aug. in his back yard. He puts an edge between the two and it works awesome. Check out his channel. Hope that helps.
🌞These sod installers around here leave the plastic meshing on it. Drives me crazy! They did that to 2 of my houses and drove me crazy because you always snag it. You know I'm in the _hot/humid_ zone! Nice sign, I like that! *Have a great 4th weekend, too!* 🌞
I know exactly what you mean. I still tear some out from time to time and it's been 3 years. Drives me crazy. The heat is on for sure. We have chances of rain every day. No matter how good they are, it never hits. Appreciate the sign compliment. Thanks for watching as always!
Thank you for your advice ..the step you talk about watering .cut .it came out great 😱.I own my own landscaping business.i put down sod before great refreshing course 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I’m just over a week now, this is such a useful video!! Thanks so much. I think I’ve overwatered to start with, based on other advice. I’ll cut it back a bit. I’ve been giving it a full soak with a sprinkler twice daily. It’s definitely boggy in areas. I feel like I’ll be returning to this video loads in the next few months!!!
Great video! I just had sod installed at my home and the information you shared was everything I needed at this point in the process. I'm looking forward to the leveling videos.
Congrats on the new crib. Since it’s not gonna be hot and summer, the watering will be dialed back. Still want to keep it wet but won’t take as much as it won’t dry as quickly. I don’t use herbicides in the first year. That’s a conservative approach and just my preference. You won’t be worried about those until next summer at the earliest. Fertilize during green up in spring. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.
Great video. Just put in Zenith Zoysia in central SC and this is the schedule I will use to give it TLC. Question.. any good way to figure out how much H20 your sprinklers are putting on when you aren't getting rain. Does about 20 minutes every other day after 2 weeks sound about right? Thank you!
Awesome. Glad it helps. Use a tuna can to measure. Make sure to time each session to see how much gets puts out over a period of time. Tuna cans are about an inch deep. Thanks for watching.
Probably should have specified a calendar in your timeline for new sod care. I moved into a house with two-week-old Bermudagrass sod last October in Georgia, and although the watering advice was right, it was going into dormancy and I didn't actually have to mow it until February.
Great point. Thanks for pointing that out. If it's laid in the offseason or close to, that will definitely mix up the care timeline. I should have specified that this is for newly laid sod in the active growing season. Hope you still found some of it helpful for future reference if needed. Thank you for watching. I appreciate your comment.
Thank you so much for this information! I just started a channel on putting in my new yard and I’m at the stage where it’s time to do the first mowing. Thank you so much for your wisdom🙌
I will be getting new sod laid in about a month at my new home. All I will be doing is watering it regularly to keep it moist. It won't take as much water as the days will be shorter and temps will be cooler than in the summer. It won't dry out as quickly. This video relates mainly to new bermuda sod laid in the prime growing season. This time of year, you just want to keep it a little wet and prepare it to go dormant for winter if you're in a climate that it will. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.
No bag. Leave the clippings. They'll act as fertilizer and start adding organic matter to the soil. I would likely use a push mower. It really just depends on how rooted it is. Either way, you want to take it easy since it's the first cut. A push mower will make that easier. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the questions.
New palmeto st Augustine sod laid down, now watering twice a day, can I use my irrigation system and one in morning like before sunrise and then around 7pm in the evening is that a good water schedule how many inches of water. I read should be soaked, thanks for u help.
You just need to make sure it stays wet in the soil. Doesn’t really matter how ya make that happen. Don’t drown it by any means. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Hello! I was hoping to get your expertise on lawns. I am currently prepping my ground to lay new sod. I prepped my ground last week. Over the weekend, we received heavy rainfall and now the area is flooded. What should i do? Does this mean i should not lay new sod(when ground has dried up)?
I’m not one of those crazy perfectionists when it comes to laying sod. As long as the ground is graded the way you want it and relatively smoothed out, I say go ahead and lay it down. I’ve never laid my own sod. I enjoy the process of getting things the way I want it over time. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and the question.
Thank you. just take the tips off until it gets more established. Once it is you can start cutting it to your desired height if cut. Hope this helps. Thanks again. Appreciate ya.
We've got two large, established hybrid Bermuda lawns (front and back). But just had the landscaper lay new sod in a few problem spots in the backyard. Here are my questions: 1) I'm planning to overseed the established lawns with quality hybrid B seeds (from Oregon). Should I also overseed the new sod so that the new and old lawns are perfectly color-matched? 2) If you do recommend that I also overseed the new sod (one section was laid in late Feb; other sections were laid 2+ weeks ago), do you also recommend that I spread a thin layer of peat moss on the new sod with seeds, too? 3) I've seen other Bermuda lawn experts here say that I should mix peat moss with new seeds in wheelbarrow and then use a spreader. Do you agree? If my seed supplier recommends 2-3 lbs/1,000 sf, how many pounds of seed per bag of peat moss? Or if you don't recommend that method, do you know the setting for a Scotts rotary hand spreader for that ratio of seed to lawn area? Thx for any advice you can impart to me.
These are all very good questions. But unfortunately I may not be the right person to answer them for you. I am not a believer in overseeding bermuda. It is such an aggressive spreader that it will fill in any spots that need to be. It is also very hard to match color because there are so many bermuda varieties out there. I have 2-3 in my lawn from when the builder laid the sod and I didn't know any different at the time. I've just learned to live with it as it would be way more stress and work to try and make it perfect. Nothing is perfect in lawn care anyways. To your last question, I'm not sure what setting that would be. Typically you want 2-3 lbs/k. I would set it low and make as many equal passes across the lawn until the seed is gone. I hope this helps. Sorry that it's not exactly what you were looking for. Thank you for tuning in and your questions. Appreciate ya!
Post a video how to use sod for patching yellow spots. Mine dies out in a few days, yes I water it often. Patching just don’t work. Seeds grow then die also in patches 😩
Sorry you’re dealing with that. I just let the Bermuda fill in on its on. It takes time but I’m okay being patient. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Bro this is great. Thank you so super much! OK. So I have lawn rust disease on mine now.. Well thats what I found it to be by the research I've done. And its lame becuse we can't even walk through it. Because it's so bad. So haven't foind out what to do yet with it.. Any suggestions?
Thanks man! Appreciate that. I've never had rust disease, so I can't speak to it specifically. However, I've never treated for any fungus problems in the lawn. I'm about to put down some preventative for spring dead spot, but that's a whole other story. As far as your run of the mill diseases go, I just let the lawn dry out really really good to eliminate the conditions that they thrive in. Then I feed it a little nitrogen to push growth and mow it out. I prefer natural remedies unless it's just a major problem. You can always give a big box fungicide a shot. The one I'm about to use is the Bayer Advanced. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey! What did you mean at 10:30 that they graded it wrong? I just bought a new construction home and my backyard has some draining issues (it's not level). They came out and measured and said it was fine and to keep an eye on it. I have no idea how to get them to make it level. Any tips?
@@danieljw1985 doing well, It’s about 90% green and maintaining it at 1inch, I have zorro zoysia. You will love zoysia, I get some many compliments on my yard. Now to level so I can get it down to half inch
we sodded 5 weeks ago...it looked amazing but now we are noticing (here in Toronto, Canada), that areas under the tree canopy have bald spots. When we touch the areas the bald grass just falls apart and it is dark brown. Is this from too much shade? There are no grubs...we checked. We give it lots of water as you have described. Why do we have patchy bald spots near the curb and under the trees and what can we do to fix this?
Could definitely be shade. Depends on the grass type. Lots of factors at play. Sometimes it just takes time and persistence in care. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Do you have a FULL YEAR review of how to take care of sod for all four seasons-- the first year of sod care? I’m heading into my first fall with my sod that was installed late June in Georgia . It’s been looking good but I don’t know what kind of water schedule to have during the cold months .
I don't. Sorry. Once it's established, it's pretty normal care other than not using a pre emergent or weed killer in the first year (that's just my personal preference). It needs less water during the cold months. Just depends on your area and rainfall. I don't use a sprinkler from Oct. through May usually and only take rain when I get it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawnsOMG Thank you so much for your response! I guess I will turn the sprinklers off then I have still been watering it twice a week at this point - - I did not expect a response so quickly. Oh my God thank you!
How often should you mow & fertilize in summer months? I'm up north in Canada and my Sods at 6 weeks since install. I've mowed it twice now, and just fed my lawn for the first time fertilizer (Starter Fertilizer) a couple days after my second mow/cut. It's looking real good other than a 2 lighter grassed areas that's got some browning .I think I cut it too short on the first cut.. I'm not sure If I need to put a wetting agent on those parts because I been watering those parts extra but can't seem to revive the green on them. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! :)
I have warm season bermuda. That will differ from cool season turf in the north. Sorry, I don't have all the answers on that. Lots of variables to consider. Thanks for watching.
HELP! I had some friends help me lay my sod and there ended up being some gaps/holes in the sod. I would love to put down some seed/sand/soil in those spots, but I don't know where to get it or what to put down. I'm thinking it would be similar to what you do with a divot on a golf course. I live in Utah and have Kentucky Bluegrass. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! P.S. Great video
Appreciate ya. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Kentucky blue spreads on its own. It can be slow tho. You will likely just have to fill in some gaps with sand or topsoil over time. Patience is key. One day you’ll not even notice. Thanks again.
Budget - can you touch base on pest control on new St Augustines sod hear in Fl . - Sod just installed on May 17 , i was told by landscaper this sod gets Scabies pest , is it something i can do myself with a sprayer ,and now how soon should i look to do treatment ? Thanks
Congrats on the new sod. Sorry but I don't ever use any insecticides or pesticides. I wouldn't be able to speak on that from experience. Thanks for watching.
I had a pool put in, I’m doing my own landscaping. I put in a half pallet of Bermuda sod . I’ve been watering twice a day for two weeks, stopped for three days of rain, then started back. I mowed once the other day. But it’s layed on a layer of sand, potting soil and dirt mix. On top of road hard brown clay . I live in South Carolina. So brown clay is uncommon, but it’s very hard clay . Have I done enough?
Sounds like you have. It’s not an exact science. Every lawn is different for sure. Seems like you’re on top of things. Keep it up. Thanks for watching and commenting.
How long after new sod can you use it like normal. Example kids water play thing and things like that. I know to walk on it it's 2 weeks but I'm sure there's a difference between walking on it and having kids play on it with a water play thing.
I’d wait about a month. By 2 weeks you’re prolly still good to go but that kind of activity can definitely add some wear and tear to it. Thanks for watching.
I’ve never used one so I don’t know from experience. I’d prolly just look at something from Lowe’s like Scott’s. Sorry I don’t have a definite answer for ya. Thanks for watching.

Great info…. Just put down new sod at my sons new home 2 weeks ago. We will be following your suggestions. Thanks
Awesome. Thank you. Congrats on his new crib. That’s exciting. I’ve got one nearing completion and will be starting over on a newly sodded Bermuda lawn. Here’s a vid I just did about it since the sod will be laid dormant…ruclips.net/video/i12A4Ochyvc/видео.html
Hope that helps too. Thanks again.
Glad to see you putting out realistic expectations and real world timeline in very straightforward manner
RIght on. Congrats on the remodel. That was nice of the company to get ya all set back up. Thanks so much. Appreciate ya!
Love the KISS level, easy peazy .. Keep up the good work
That's what it's all about 👊 Thank you for watching and the support!
Thank you.. My new sod been 7week.. rabbit makes my lawn yellow
I just laid new sod. Should I also put Scott's new grass fertilizer on now?
soil test and proper water are #1
So some people say. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for your advice ..the step you talk about watering .cut .it came out great 😱.I own my own landscaping business.i put down sod before great refreshing course 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Right on. That’s awesome. Glad you found this helpful. Appreciate ya watching and the feedback.
Awesome. Glad you found it helpful. Thank you!
Great video! I just had sod installed at my home and the information you shared was everything I needed at this point in the process. I'm looking forward to the leveling videos.
Thank you so much. Glad it helps. Congrats on the new sod. Good luck. Appreciate ya watching.
This is the video I was looking for
Awesome. Appreciate ya.
I just purchased a joint Tuesday so this was soo timely. Looking forward to other videos.
How does that timeline apply for a closing in Oct.
Thanks man, I want to mow so bad!... But I guess I gotta wait another week
I feel ya bro. It's tempting but worth letting the roots get established before getting too deep into mowing. Appreciate ya!
Thank you for Video buying my first house and just want to be so prepared for what's to come good advice 👌
Congrats on the new crib. That's exciting. You're gonna have a lot of fun. I'm glad you found this vid helpful! Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Great advice thank you for the great content knowing what to do makes things a bit easier
Thank you. Glad it helps. Good luck!
Thanks for the information. But I watered, it grew well but right now it’s dying. I keep watering but no changes.
You bet. What grass type and location?
omg...just what i needed ..thanks :)
My pleasure. Happy to help!
We did Kentucky bluegrass in Utah this summer, should we wait to fertilze in October before the snow comes? Or maybe now well before the first freeze?
Thank you so much for this information! I just started a channel on putting in my new yard and I’m at the stage where it’s time to do the first mowing. Thank you so much for your wisdom🙌
Congrats on the yard and channel. I’ll have to check it out. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
I have new burmuda in September. Anything specific I should do besides what this video has
I will be getting new sod laid in about a month at my new home.
What about when it’s around December when the sod is put down? My home will be finished during this time in Texas.
on my first cut, should i use a bag or no bag on my mower.. is a riding mower safe for the first cut or should i use a push mower?
Great info. Thx so much
Glad it helps. Thank you!
I officially feel old looking this up. But thanks.
😆 no shame. 👊👊 thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video, I have nutsedge popping up on my new sod, 3weeks old?what should I do?
I pull nutsedge despite what you hear. Never have a problem with it. See one, pull it. That’s just me though. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns will try it out! Thanks!
It has come a long way!
Yes it has!
Thanks so much for watching and the question.
back at it again.
Right on! Rock and roll!
Good job! I’ve been following your plan.
Awesome. Thank you. Appreciate ya.
great video question first cut what level should you cut new sod and for how long
Thank you. just take the tips off until it gets more established.
I’ve never done sod before... I would love give it a try sometime. Great video 👍🏻
Thanks man! Appreciate ya watching. Hope you have a great 4th of July weekend!👍
What times would you recommend for the watering in the first two weeks
Early morning and early evening.
Thank you for the info. Will update you as we move through the process!!
👍👍
Hey! What did you mean at 10:30 that they graded it wrong? I just bought a new construction home and my backyard has some draining issues (it's not level). They came out and measured and said it was fine and to keep an eye on it. I have no idea how to get them to make it level. Any tips?
Level isn’t the same as graded. A good grade will direct water away from the house. Some slope is necessary. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
great video. Im subscribing
Thank you very much. Appreciate that!
Pro Tip: Start at 1:44 and watch at 1.5X speed. You're welcome.
Thank you! This was super helpful!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you found it helpful.
question,,, what is your thoughts on people burning their bermuda yards in the late winter?
Eh, not something I’ll ever do. It’s taking it a bit further than necessary in my opinion.
Great advice!🌱🌱👍🏻✨
Right on. Thank you. Glad it helps!
Good video helps me out alot
Thanks so much. Glad it could help. Appreciate ya watching and commenting!
Great video! New subscriber here! Putting down zoysia in the next week or so, very helpful video
Thank you. I appreciate that. I'm glad you find it helpful. Good luck with the new sod. Zoysia is a great looking turf!
How's the Zoysia? Just laid 3,000 sqft of Empire Zoysia at my house yesterday!!! :D
@@danieljw1985 doing well, It’s about 90% green and maintaining it at 1inch, I have zorro zoysia. You will love zoysia, I get some many compliments on my yard. Now to level so I can get it down to half inch
I wish he had video of showing everything with explanation. That would have made this video much more effective with newbee like me
we sodded 5 weeks ago...it looked amazing but now we are noticing (here in Toronto, Canada), that areas under the tree canopy have bald spots.
Thank you!
You’re welcome. Thank you.
Can my dogs be on the new sod? Looking forward to our new lawn!
As long as they’re not crazy and running in circles on it and digging. Anything can be fixed though. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
What would you do if it has been 3 months and some grass has not rooted? Thanks for the tip on mowing though.
I would check below it and see if there's something in the soil that's keeping it from rooting like a rock, brick, etc... Thanks for watching.
Thanks buddy good info
Thank you. Appreciate that!
Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to hear.
👊 right on. Love to hear it. Appreciate ya.
@@BudgetLawns thanks for replying
You're welcome. Thank you.
On some fresh sod Bermuda grass, after the 2nd week; how high should I cut my grass for the first time?
Just take the tips off for the first several mows. 👍👊
Can you put weed killer before the new grass
Thanks for this. I was clueless about what to do with this new yard.
You're welcome. Glad it could help. I appreciate you watching and commenting! Good luck in the new lawn!
What's a good pre sod starter fertilizer?!?! For (NJ)
I’ve never used one so I don’t know from experience. I’d prolly just look at something from Lowe’s like Scott’s. Sorry I don’t have a definite answer for ya. Thanks for watching.
Quick question. So you don't apply starter fertilizer for a new St Augustine sod? It was installed 2 weeks ago.
I would if applied before sod was laid. If not, I would wait. Just my preference. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns Yeah, unfortunately I closed on a new home and didn’t have an option. Thanks for your response.
I’ve built two homes and didn’t get a starter fert down on either. All turned out just fine. 👍👍
How shoulf i take care of it if i install it mid aug, and in canada? Is it still worth it to install sod?
