hello John, we just put in new sod in our backyard in this weather in texas despite many telling us not to but my wife insisted lol. what would you recommend we do to make sure the sod to take root in this weather? thank you
We are in zone 5. We need to 'patch' some areas of our lawn .... how long does it take for sod patches to take root? We would want that to happen prior to our first frost date (October 15).
2-3 weeks with good moisture and good weather :)
I never roll mine when I lay it and I have never had an issue. I agree that it can be overkill. In Australia we use kikuyu which is almost impossible to kill which helps.
Great information John. I planted the Bolero Plus in my small backyard area in June. It looks great, but after a couple of weeks, I noticed mushrooms sprouting and 2 areas which turned brown on the edges even though water was getting to them. I applied Nourish Biosol and Penetrate to both and they seem to be coming back. Would the mushrooms indicate that I was watering too much? My front lawn has a lot of Bermuda (unfortunately), but looks really good after using both of those products on it. I’m debating whether to overseed with rye this fall as much of it will turn brown in the winter. While mowing last week, I noticed mushrooms in the front lawn too. I’ve cut the water back a little, but it’s still over 100 here, however with the shorter days, it doesn’t stay hot as long. I have one more application of Penetrate and wondering when is the best time to apply that?
Mushrooms are not an indicator of anything bad and there is no solution to prevent them from occurring. The mushrooms are simply an indication of an abundance of organic matter and the only eradication method is to physically remove and discard them. Mushrooms are not an indication you are watering too much. I would apply the final Penetrate about now if it is more than a week after your previous Penetrate application. You will need to overseed if you have very much Bermuda at all and you want a completely green Winter lawn.

I was hoping to get your expertise on lawns. I am currently prepping my ground to lay new sod. I prepped my ground last week. Over the weekend, we received heavy rainfall and now the area is flooded. What should i do? Does this mean i should not lay new sod(when ground has dried up)?

Hi John, I'd really like some advice please, I had my turf / sod down now for year with and I've got some bare patches now, I put grass seed on top but none of the grass seed grew, some did put that was only where the sod joints are, why is that, why don't grass seed grow on top of dead sod, I tried in the spring and October but not joy at all wot am I doing wrong. Hi Matt -
If seed sits on dense dead grass, germination is difficult because there's no soil contact at all. Thorough and aggressive raking of the dead grass with a stiff leaf rake is good preparation for seeding. Also, keeping seed moist when it's sitting on dead grass is difficult when the sun is shining. Lots of quick, frequent watering is necessary and a thin wood based compost or mulch right over the seed helps immensely. Also, I like to apply our Blend and our Penetrate Liquid Biotiller right over the seed because each has ingredients that speed germination and that increases the number of seeds that germinate. -John
Hey John! Great information. Just finished a huge retainer wall and leveling of backyard project and have sod on the way. Not a huge spot, but with Late Spring coming, fingers crossed. This actually gave me some great tips. If you read these, what do you think of adding Hydratain on new sod?
I think Hydretain would be good for your sod and is in keeping with our goals of promoting lively soil. It is very similar to our Penetrate Liquid Biotiller, although we market our Penetrate much differently. Suffice to say, I like your idea of applying Hydretain.
Hi.. we have our new sod on a steep incline. The ground underneath is still too soft.. it has been 2 weeks now. Is it time to mow it? Watering it 2 times a day !
Usually, after two weeks it is time to mow, but before mowing you have to stop watering so that it is firm the first time you mow. Dry it quickly, mow and then go back to watering as necessary. After the first mowing we fertilize at 8-10lbs per 1,000sqft with our Nourish Biosol. It can be tricky getting getting new sod to take, we believe in you! -J&B's

Hi John, I ordered some expensive Kurapia sod. We tilled the soil and have a good automated watering schedule with full sun and lots of warm (75F) days coming up. Are there any organic root stimulators you'd recommend?
Unfortunately our retainer wall is just finished and we are going to put down sod. Does first 2-3 days water 4 times a day 5-10 mins? Then cut back? How about spraying with Hydrotain?
Depends on your weather and the water output of your specific sprinklers. Four times at 10 minutes sounds like a lot, but w/o more info I can't say for sure. Remember, in the beginning you are just trying to keep the top moist. I like Hydretain and I think it makes sense to apply it. It's very much like our Penetrate Liquid Biotiller, which I also like!
I had Bermuda sod installed and one side is ok but the other side is very brown. I noticed that the company did not till, they said that the sod company they use cut thick and it is considered top soil in the sod. I noticed that the sod thickness varies a lot. Anything I can do? The sod growing company will come out in a couple days, I expect finger pointing.
It's difficult to get Bermuda sod perfectly level right at initial installation because of Bermuda sod thickness variation. Leveling is best accomplished by aggressive mowing and light sanding after initial installation. The sod company can explain more thoroughly. Brown Bermuda sod soon after installation is usually associated somehow with improper water. Check carefully to see if that's a possibility here. For the soil I recommend our Blend right over the top of the new sod along with a sprayed application of our Penetrate Liquid Biotiller over the Blend. 4 weeks after Blend apply 10lbs per 1,000sqft of our Nourish Biosol. Sir, I had landscapers regrade and install sod on my 1000 sq ft front lawn area. They did not roll, so I did. How many weeks should I expect for the roots to start growing into the soil below? I'm at 2 weeks post install and only seeing a few white roots starting if I pull up an edge.
At one week usually there are a few roots, two weeks about 50% rooted and 3 weeks 95% rooted. Apply 6lbs of our Nourish Biosol asap and then another 6lbs 2 weeks later after it has been mowed once or twice, which will assist rooting and establishment. -John
@@JohnandBobs ...thank you, Sir! Although the turf is still excellent looking, pulling up an edge or seam reveals the roots to be a good behind your suggested timeframe. Here in the hot PacNW I know I have to keep it wet. Will follow your directions.

Recently sod was laid in my yard. Underneath I noticed some mesh on the bottom side. Is the mesh supposed to be removed or left?
Mesh is left in place. Some sod forms grow there sod on mesh, others don't. Less and less these days. Thanks for reaching out!

My sod is midiron and after a few weeks I’m seeing what I *think* is another type of Bermuda poking through 😭 I believe there was some in the preexisting lawn. Will I just need to accept it and let the strongest survive?
When bermuda infestations in cool season turf are young and just starting, products like "Turflon" are quite effective at killing the bermuda without hurting the cool season turf.
@@JohnandBobs could it be applied over a broad area or would then potentially overwhelm the cool season turf and kill it?
Depends on the product you use. I recommend you read the label carefully to determine the best way to apply it. Other plants near the lawn could be negatively effected by the chemical. You could test in a small area and see what results you get before applying to the entire area.

If absolutely necessary, yes.

I live in Ireland, I have bad drainage laid sod three weeks ago and it's still brown,, think I might have over watered it, can I put holes in it and sew seeds?
Yes, you can sew seeds on/over sod. Aeration (putting holes in it) is a good idea just prior to seeding. Use a heavy seed rate of about 10lbs per 1,000sqft and then lightly top dress with good fertilizer and mulch as per our videos. Then water lightly and frequently to germinate the seed.
come on now ... use a 4 tine flat blade pitch fork and punch loads of holes in each piece of sod .... it helps the water to get to the roots fast and it helps to break up to compacted soil of the sod .

@@JohnandBobs My friends father owns a landscape company and has been doing that for 30 years as part of the sod install and they swear by it ! If you don't punch holes in the new sod - the water will stay on top and not easily pass through down to the roots !

How about we start to think about not having a lawn and conserving our water at the same time. A little lawn goes a long ways to beautify our planting beds but a field of it for a backyard seems wasteful and not very interesting. I love your videos and all our products but the use of large lawns for city lots should be a thing of the past. Sorry for being so opinionated but seriously, homeowners need to think about climate change and water usage.
Lawns are better than the artificial turf that seems to be the trend! Turf is useful in gardens for children playing and staying active. I agree though that this doesn't need acres and a mix of woodland and wild flowers would look much better!
Yours is a valid opinion and slowly I see positive changes regarding your perspective.
They will be adding in more features to the garden so it won't remain just a giant turf area. There are also children at this home, so having a lawn is great for them to play on!
