Windows 10 release 2004 actually reports the drive classification in the Performance tab of Task Manager. It reports these drives as SD cards. HP have a very similar fanless machine, labelled "Stream", but on that you have to remove a whole rubber strip to access the case screws. Again, the system board is crushed into one corner of the case, but the keyboard connection isn't folded.
The CPU is mounted diagonally to prevent the leads from shorting together well in the soldering process this method is applied pretty much for all large logic chips with small leads this way they make sure that The chip is well bonded with the motherboard with no shortage in between and it also helpe to reduce the manufacturing cost
It's mounted diagonally because it makes routing traces easier and that reduces cost because sections of the chip are much more equally distanced apart from their destination, without requiring expensive additional routing or layers to get acceptable reliability and performance. We don't see it on larger boards such as full size laptops or desktops because there's enough room to route traces properly within the space given.

How much better is sodium than optifine? I don't have a crazy low end laptop but it still only has a 10th gen i3 and integrated graphics, so not a powerhouse by any means lol. I get a stable 60 fps with a mix of low and medium settings with optifine but I've heard about sodium too but never tried it.

I have an inspron 11 3000. Mine is older. It has 4 gbs of ram, an Intel céderons 2nd gen and a partly functional keyboard. They were worth it. 6 years ago

My daughter used this for years. It even runs Windows 11(I custom built it though to use less resources) pretty fine. Same with Office 2019. With a few removals of useless stuff, my final install size was 5.1Gb. Also disabled updates since they can use up a lot of space. It's now being used for a projector every sunday on church.
How is that even possible? when I get around to playing it, SAOHF lags and my pc is 3x better than this laptop. It would have been a reall powerful pc back in about 2010-11
That's a great way of getting around the storage bottleneck, I'd recommend to anyone dealing with eMMC storage to just boot from the USB ports instead.

Try disabling the background and setting the Lighting to Retro or Trippy when testing Terraria on old weak laptops, it should improve performance by a LOT.
Diagonal CPU installation can be for efficiency of the space on the motherboard. It's possible that the screwholes for the cpu heatsink would cause a pain if the cpu were put in horizontally. Of course, having everything soldered etc. are all money saving measures. Margins on these devices are much smaller than on others. Great video as always though!

This machine reminds me of the Dell Chromebook 11. One of my family members got one and the internals are very similar, even down to the weird daughter board for the USB port. Sadly that device was all soldered too, so no SSD upgrade, but GalliumOS linux is small enough so 🤷♀️
Depends on what you are doing. Chrome OS is usually even better than your typical light linux distro for performance and battery life. I am sure it could run libre office and web browse okay, unsure about videos on linux.

A common strat on these laptops is to remove the m.2 wifi card and fit a smaller ssd in that slot, then just use a USB wifi card. Its not ideal but it is a solution.

I used to have the touchscreen version of this laptop and it was HORRIBLE, half of the keyboard stopped working, Windoze chugged and I had to reset it multiple times, a couple times because of updates. SO glad I have a MacBook now!
I completely appreciate your observations of how slow the Dell is. I however have a borderline erotic fascination with netbooks running Windows XP from around 2005. Specifically the Acer Aspire One. I have them in all sorts of colors and generations. Its ridiculous, I still use one for Vagcom which allows me to scan modules on VW's from around the same era. Anyways lets say that a calendar is a necessity on these computers. It's an early Intel atom and its computational speeds are glacial. There so so slow that they don't even get hot, they act as an air conditioner. I think isolation is getting to me? Comments?
I've designed many motor controllers and motherboards... we design CPUs and microcontrollers diagonally to enable cleaner take-off of the tracks. It results in more efficient layouts. Dell do it constantly...
Unfortunately there are no Windows XP drivers, as the only thing I would use this for would be retrocomputing. I'm not sure if this thing even supports Windows 7 (maybe there do exist modded drivers). Probably the best OS for this would be a light-weight Linux.

No it’s a pile of crappy. Just like the HP Stream series. 4 GB of ram is just not enough and no way to expand it. Also there is no active cooling, so the laptop will get hot and start to slow down.
Oh boy. I remember my parents buying this Dell laptop for my brother as a university laptop, but they returned it back due to the ridiculous specs. Plus, the amount of useless bloatware on setup was a bit of an annoyance.
EMMC storage is just a lil bit better than a hard drive, but it is cheap, thus used in budget laptops. I see them as something that you'll only used for a couple of years, like going to college/uni.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out. If you can't see the real issues that need to be addressed in our society, and think of a civil rights movement as akin to a "mob", there's no helping you.
That's an eMMC storage. Definitely the reason for the slowness. However, they feel actually faster than 5400 RPM HDDs because of the access times. Funny thing is that I have an ASUS ZenFone 2 smartphone with Intel Z3580 CPU with the exact same model eMMC (SK hynix H26M64103EMR) and the speeds are much less when compared to this laptop.
You can install 2004 (use Media Creation Tool to put it on a USB), but may need to do some vicious pruning of apps. Besides the usual bloatware I had to uninstall Office and use a USB stick as additional storage, then put Office back on again afterwards. You need about 10GB free to run the update.
I have the same model, mine is red, using a 500GB HDD (Toshiba). It better running Linux (MX Linux doesn't support the trackpad) than Windows, and the Windows should be reinstalled to remove the bloatwares if you want to use it (weak laptop should never be installed with bloatwares. Don't worry, reinstalling automatically activates the license since the license is OEM)
Hey this is totally irrelevant but my Windows 10 has been acting up and keeps on locking by itself after 3-4 minutes of inactivity and this has NEVER happened before. I've tried everything, and even an expert for Windows tried fixing the same problem for somebody else and it never worked. Why is eucalyptus spray used? I wipe everything down eith either isopropyl alcohol or better yet lysol wipes. Why the heck would you use that then? I mean i feel like maaaybe it will smell good and shine it up but as for bacteria and stuff.. doubt it does much
That empty space near the motherboard could have been used for a user replaceable/expandable M.2 style (or mSATA style) SSD :) as 32GB isn't enough at all. After the first major "feature update", you'll be out of storage very quickly. That storage is also eMMC based - in other words, like an SD card. Not very quick. They'd have been better equipping this with a 160GB or 250GB mechanical hard disk - they are so cheap!
each episode works similarly. you get the laptop, see if it works and make it better by changing the thermal paste. Which tends to get worse after a few years. and dw about the thermal paste, it will spread when it's back in place. play aoe. love it.

The reason for the slowness on the ssd is because it likely is emmc storage, which is closer to the flash in an sdcard than in an m.2 or sata ssd.
Emmc storage is actually slower than your average SD card and controller nowadays.

Diagonally mounted processors are quite common, especially on old Dell motherboards, older GPUs, among other things

If you are wondering about what all that empty space inside is for, it is because there is a version of this laptop with a 500gb 2.5" hard drive.
I would honestly like to see you try to use linux on this thing, linux usually runs well on low power hardware and 4gb of ram.
I have a Desktop from 2007 with Core2Duo E7200 and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. I put Linux Lite on it and it works great.

EMMC storage is just a lil bit better than a hard drive, but it is cheap, thus used in budget laptops. I see them as something that you'll only used for a couple of years, like going to college/uni.

Serch for Latitude 3180. It is the same form factor, but with better keyboard and a SSD M2 slot. Very fast.

I mainly use a dell latitude e5550 running Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a great choice if you don't like the drivers that come with windows.

That's an eMMC storage. Definitely the reason for the slowness. However, they feel actually faster than 5400 RPM HDDs because of the access times. Funny thing is that I have an ASUS ZenFone 2 smartphone with Intel Z3580 CPU with the exact same model eMMC (SK hynix H26M64103EMR) and the speeds are much less when compared to this laptop.

You can install 2004 (use Media Creation Tool to put it on a USB), but may need to do some vicious pruning of apps. Besides the usual bloatware I had to uninstall Office and use a USB stick as additional storage, then put Office back on again afterwards. You need about 10GB free to run the update.
I have the same model, mine is red, using a 500GB HDD (Toshiba). It better running Linux (MX Linux doesn't support the trackpad) than Windows, and the Windows should be reinstalled to remove the bloatwares if you want to use it (weak laptop should never be installed with bloatwares. Don't worry, reinstalling automatically activates the license since the license is OEM)

Hey this is totally irrelevant but my Windows 10 has been acting up and keeps on locking by itself after 3-4 minutes of inactivity and this has NEVER happened before. I've tried everything, and even an expert for Windows tried fixing the same problem for somebody else and it never worked. I'd figured I leave this comment here since you're pretty amazing with computers and I just need help if anyone can reply back, thanks.

That empty space near the motherboard could have been used for a user replaceable/expandable M.2 style (or mSATA style) SSD :) as 32GB isn't enough at all. After the first major "feature update", you'll be out of storage very quickly.
That storage is also eMMC based - in other words, like an SD card. Not very quick. They'd have been better equipping this with a 160GB or 250GB mechanical hard disk - they are so cheap!
