Jillian has always come across to me as an angry person. Unhappy and frustrated. I don’t respond well to being bullied and that seems to be her motivation when training.
if someone starts trying to bully me into doing something i will become a fortress of resolve to NOT do the thing. it really doesn't work for me either.
I once read an article in which Jillian Michaels stated she had been put in a martial arts class run by an abusive teacher in which, when she cried, the teacher cornered and attacked her and wouldn't stop attacking her until she fought her way out. That must have been a huge contributor to her current issues - she even basically admitted it, but framed it in a way that suggested she thought that martial arts class was "character-building" when in reality it fostered a permanent cornered-animal mentality that she now turns aggressively on everyone else (you know, the kind of "anger issues" that are normally associated with toxic masculinity except in this case the person inculcated with those values was a girl). You don't do that, especially to kids - and when it comes to practicing defensive fighting, there should be consent involved - and no cornering. From what I hear, anyway, drilling some of the more difficult self-defense moves means that those will be more effective even if you are cornered at some point, and that's why normal martial arts - the non-abusive kind - is taught that way.
The information from Jillian is fine, general in fact, the problem is that she serves it up dripping in a " come on people this is basic information". To me, hearing Abby with zero judgement is much more conducive to learning info about trying a healthier choice. I love how Abby helps us learn to tailor our nutrition around living our lives instead of the opposite. Thank you Abby.
@@grandiose5720 I don't get it either. I mean, I guess she has a bad rep for The Biggest Loser, but I really felt this video was just reading way too hard into it. Jillian seems like she's achieved a heathy balance for herself.
She comes across as so joyless and overly intense when she talks about food. When I think of all the people you’ve spoken about on your channel, I like the ones who enthuse about and really savour what they eat.

Abbey Sharp is life! 🙌🏼 her videos have taught me how to both look for ways to make more satisfying meals and also how NOT to shame myself. She’s helping me unlock years of disordered binge eating and I feel like a new me!
Part 2 please!!! I feel that this needs more time to fully unpack Jillian’s condescending ways of fitness and nutrition that are in actuality promoting over exercising and anorexic behaviors. Even in her older workout videos she is always talking about “gross fat” in the abdomen and “if you don’t want to be fat then don’t stop”. Hearing that while working out to her videos when I was in highschool was what fueled my ED and “revenge body” mentality. I’m so glad that you Abbey are calling out all the diet culture bs and being a fresh voice of reason!
I’m so sorry Alyssa that you had that experience but you’re not alone… I would literally kill myself doing her workouts in my younger days as well shedding fat I didn’t have but “saw”… she’s low-key just awful and I’m hoping for a part 2 as well

It was such a relief to hear your practical, kind, reasonable but firmly critical response to Gillian, whose face and voice absolutely terrorize me even on video after growing up watching her berate so many people. Agreed! I got hooked on Team Body Project workout because of their inclusivity and positivity. Daniel and Alex feature people of all different sizes in their workouts and never use negative language about weight as motivation in their workouts. Prior to that I was used to RUclips fitness instructors using fat shaming terminology to motivate people during a workout. It just made me feel too uncomfortable to enjoy a workout. Jillian Michaels has helped normalise a lot of toxic language about weight and food. It’s not helpful for anyone on a fitness and/or wellness journey.
As an Irish person (from a farming family), I find it so unbelievably weird that in North America you've to define dairy/beef products as 'grass fed' because it's not the norm there. So weird that you don't allow cattle to eat their natural food source which their stomachs have evolved to digest...
It's so weird that you refer to cows as beef, instead of cows. They are beautiful animals. So vulnerable and deserving of living out their lives and dying of natural causes.
It's certainly weird and sad. The Irish standards for meat are much higher than in America. The norm in America is the grain fed where grass fed is much more expensive.
Jillian Michaels seems scary, if she was my trainer or dietitian , i’d probably go once start crying and never go back. And the fitness plan on biggest looser did not seem beginners friendly. They should have started with light weights, walking, yoga , strench and work there way up.
Jillian is the stereotypical “tough” trainer. Which is disappointing because that’s been shown to be less effective than a trainer that listens and respects their clients. It’s an outdated strategy and luckily I see the industry becoming more understanding that being understanding and encouraging maintainable fitness behaviors is better in the long run.
I think people need to move to a farm or raise a garden and only eat seasonal produce if they are going to keep worrying a about every little ingredient. Once I went on a blind date with a guy who was happy enough to order pizza, but then gave the waitress a lecture about the chemicals in soda. When we left the restaurant he started asking whether I used organic shampoo. Since he “forgot” his wallet and I had to pay for the date, I forgot to call him back.

As a university student studying ecology, who's taken some courses discussing agriculture and ecoculture I feel the need to say (that at least in the US) the reason to eat organic has absolutely everything to do with sustainable agriculture practices and nothing to do with organic foods being any "healthier" for you. For my personal sustainability goals, this means I try to buy organic versions of the food I don't already grow myself. That being said, I fully recognize that organic foods are often times more expensive and therefore less accessible. If you can't afford organic, or even if you just don't want to eat it- you do you! I would also loooove to see Abbey do a deep dive into this, even though I know agricultural practices aren't exactly your forte!
Yes!!! If I could afford organic food, I would totally buy it solely for the reason of it potentially being better for the environment because I'm all for that! Unfortunately where I live organic food is easily double the price of conventional so it's not really an option 😭
Thanks for pointing this out. I tend to skip organic because I'm cheap and figure non-organic is good enough for me. Reframing it as a bit of extra money to contribute to a healthier local ecology, well I am 100% down to pay for that. I'm lucky to live in a farming area, time to make some organic farmer buddies.
Also, buying from local small-scale farmers allows you to be familiar with their practices, so even if you aren't getting a USDA label, you know you are getting a good product. Or yeah, growing your own, even if your outdoor space is limited to a balcony.
She adds the “organic” modifier to foods some might consider “bad”, like it’s a holy incantation. She doesn’t feel the need to specify whether the fruits and vegetables are organic.
I tore the meniscus in my left knee doing her 30 day shred. Weeks of pain, steroid injections in my knee, and walking on crutches were my “reward” for her training techniques.
I used to do one of her workout videos all the time about ten years ago. My mom kept it, so I decided to try it again about a year ago. I couldn't get through it. And it wasn't because I was in worse shape than before. My mindset and the way I think about my body had just changed so drastically that I couldn't stand her yelling and demeaning comments.

Same! I used to be a huge Jillian Michaels fanatic. For years, I read her books, did all her workout videos, and listened to her podcast. It only led to me sobbing on the bathroom floor because I couldn't get under 117 lbs and then cutting out my "treat" (a sugar-free egg protein smoothie, FFS), and adding an extra hour of exercise onto each workout. Took a looooooooot of therapy to undo the damage I let that woman do to me.
Ugh it’s horrible…I watched the biggest loser from when I was maybe 5 years old because I’ve been obese since I was 3. I never really thought to label it that way, but you’re right, she is a trigger. The biggest loser and just dieticians in general are that for me as well simply because seeing one always meant being shamed or not being able to enjoy food or eat when I was hungry for months afterwards. Um…is this what a trigger is? Sorry if I’m using it incorrectly.
When I was heavily overweight in university and wanted a good quick workout, I read great things about 30-day shred and bought it to use. The shaming rhetoric and constant toxicity were enough to turn me off of fitness until I was 26 when I started my continued health journey. Shame does nothing for anyone, and the fact that Gillian monetized her cruelty speaks a lot about our society’s judgment on bodies that’s very unfortunate.
just comments about your own body and feeling ugly, gross does not help you stop binge-eating. I stopped hanging out with few friends who made disparaging comments about my body. I already have a mirror at home, I don’t need people reminding me how gross I am. And I feel better alone
Jillian Michaels aided in my anorexia in high school. Now I am in no way blaming her for my choices, as I was solely responsible for my actions, but I was much less knowledgeable and so easily susceptible to molding. I watched her on Biggest Loser and followed her on all her talk show appearances, and "learned" a lot from her. Again, not her responsibility, and gossip magazines were a giant part of my "education" as well. But her name, face and voice will forever be embedded in my mind. Really really proud of myself for moving so far away from her, as well as my former lifestyle. In terms of making shorter videos, Abbey please don't! I love the longer length videos!
Thank you for calling out the economically privileged viewpoint of Jillian's video. Organic this, organic that is just not economically possible for a significant percentage of the population. The inability to afford a certain kind of food should not be a moral failing. A bite of mac and cheese is just that. The shame faced admission that she likes peanut butter seems to come from the idea that almond butter is more sophisticated--only kids and 'plebs' would like peanut butter! There's an underlying tone of classism in this "common sense " that bothers me.
Good points, but both Walmart and Costco sell cheap organic food. A week's worth of organic greens from Costco costs less than a Whopper. Heck, it costs less than an egg, cheese, and "protein" ( your choice of) bagel sandwich at any place I can find in my city. If I had to eat on practically nothing, I'd be down to organic veggies, beans, rice, pasta, and pasta sauce from Costco. I'd be miserable, mind, because I'd miss, well, tons of flavors and foods, but I wouldn't starve. Well, except for the bread. They have cheap organic flour and sugar, too. Not the healthiest, because it's just plain unbleached white all purpose, but it's amazing how tasty your own bread can be. Especially fresh. Eggs, meat, dairy, though, that does get mad expensive. Especially if you add in grass-fed. That said, everything I read says the planet needs us to eat less meat. And I do know lots of pretty awful stuff about the three big meat industries.

Either something is off with your numbers are the people at McDonald’s are ripping you off. Plus you aren’t counting in food desert where people don’t have Walmart’s or cosco. Or any sort of grocery stores to go too. They have to live on fast food or any place close enough to keep family fed. This is very much a classism thing.
@@LylyHec How so? Membership is about $50 a year. Even Cricket costs more per month. If by privileged you mean I'm not unhoused and have a vehicle that runs, sure. And I'm very thankful for that. But if I had to eat on $50 a week or less, I could do it at Costco. That's not privilege. And just to be clear, I've lived off dollar store food before. It's more expensive. _Much_ more expensive.
Wild salmon mean loads of other fish getting killed, either accidentally caught in the net or tiny fish who get scared and hide in the salmon's gills. Farmed salmon are fed wild caught fish. If you live on this planet, the ecosystem's health has to be taken into account when you think about the health risks of eating a food, right?
If you dive even deeper, those companies she mentioned that promote sustainability for wild caught fish, none of them are doing anything to actually SUSTAIN the salmon population. It’s sad.
I can assure you if a person in a ‘larger body’ ate a bite of their child’s Mac &Cheese a lot of people would be critical and would be happy to tell them. Jillian knows this because she is critical of anyone in a larger body.
The sad part is that the show is entirely based on that. Making fitness a competition filled with taking a lot of supplements, starving oneself, and working out until you're so sore that you cannot do much else. They have reached out to many of the other fitness people I follow, and their practices are completely shady. The key to lasting fitness that goes beyond a year or more is to receive proper nutrition (supplements are to SUPPLEMENT not replace regular food), exercise that helps you be consistent in reaching your goals, and your calorie intake should reflect your current goals
something I do want to point out about the whole "organic" thing. If you can afford to buy organic, you should, because conventional pesticides in runoff water (along with fertilizers) are making marine mammals like sea lions and elephant seals very sick. I volunteer at a marine mammal rescue that is contracted with state and federal governments to conduct research; when an animal dies in our care, we perform an autopsy, and pesticides from farming are causing diseases in these mammals. we tell the public it's one of the ways you can help preserve marine life, buying organic. The other thing you can do is to reduce your use of single-use plastic as much as possible because the marine mammals can swallow it and it makes them sick.
The problem with “organic” is that unless you know the individual farms very well, they could still be using loads of pesticides that aren’t on the banned list. Many of the pesticides that organic farms are able to use while still calling themselves organic, are studied less well and have the potential to be more harmful than banned ones. I agree with you though, that it’s good if you can find farms that are actually using more natural methods rather than polluting. But then we have the other problem regarding yield and cost. I’m really hoping that in the future we can find sustainable ways to produce food at scale that is healthy for the environment and economically viable to feed everyone on the planet.
Thanks for clarifying too that "organic" refers to pesticide use and not nutrition. So many people are confused when I try to talk to them about the "dirty dozen" and "clean fifteen" in this context when asking if organic is "better" than regular produce.
I think, though, it's important not to classify others' behavior as pathological just because it may seem more rigid than average. If it is not distressing and/or dysfunctional (e.g., doesn't have negative impacts on health or quality of life), even though it may be less "normal" doesn't deem it pathological.
Jillian also needs to concern how portraying this food this way makes it seem very privileged. Not everyone can afford grass fed and organic produce or meat.
Just because someone has different food preferences than you do, it doesn't mean they have a "disroder." Some people are just really invested in their health.

YASSSS!!! I have been waiting a video on Jillian Michaels… I remember when I used to do her workouts and thought how great she looked, except she pushed her BS “diets” and “detoxes”… not to mention her abuse on the Biggest Loser, her fatphobic rhetoric, and her ableism… I’m here for it…
Thank you for mentioning her attitude towards those of us in larger bodies. Her "just do this" attitude reminds me of when I went to the doctor and his tip for me was to stop drinking soda, and then was condescending and didn't believe me when I said I don't drink soda regularly.
Same thing for me. 😭 One day, I had to see a gynaecologist for an emergency appointment. At the end of the appointment, the gynaecologist took my by the shoulders and told me how much to eat, what I should eat and how to eat in a condescending tone while saying I shouldn’t eat too much. I literally hadn’t had anything in 24hrs that day prior to the morning appointment and ate less that 500 calories 7 days before the appointment itself. My depression and trauma related anxiety disorder were high-functioning at that time and I couldn’t eat more than one meal a day. I physically and emotionally couldn’t. Cooking was a hassle. And to top it off, he made me think I shouldn’t eat anything at all that day, too. I had a cup noodles portion a day for a week. I was like: “He’s right… I shouldn’t be eating bad food.” It was a time when the strength in my body would leave me, my blood pressure would be terrible and my heart started acting up. I drank water whenever I could and had little food. But, even drinking wouldn’t work often times and I’d be dehydrated. I’d become nauseous and got frequent headaches. This psychological low lasted for a month (started roughly two months before that but I “functioned”) and I tried to eat at least two meals a day, but that one week was especially horrible and exhausting. I already had trauma from a previous gynaecologist I’ve visited a few years back and that gynaecologist I’m talking about triggered me. I couldn’t even eat for 8hrs after the appointment was finished. So, I hadn’t had food in literal 36 hours at this point. My body was breaking down and I had to sleep after the appointment. I cried because the female gynaecologist I’ve seen before in the same practice was on vacation and I saw a substitute male doctor. I should’ve waited for the other doctor to come back but I was scared since I have PCOS and my period wouldn’t come although I’m on hormonal therapy… But now, I realise my abdominal pain and lack of period was due to insufficient nutrients and lack of movement. I wasn’t taking care of myself. Don’t let other people belittle you. Diet and physical exercise are individual processes for everyone.

It sounds like you may have had REDS (relative energy deficiency syndrome) May I also suggest looking into keto and intermittent fasting. Processed carbs and sugar (even a little) cause a lot of trouble for some people. Have a look dr Jason Fung and his videos. And redefining strength on YT - Cori is a lovely instructor that actually cares about people's progress
@@mb8219 I’m doing all right, thanks for asking. I’m eating when I feel hungry and eat whatever I like (given it’s something that doesn’t mess up my hormones or elevates my IBS and PCOS). I don’t wanna restrict or find any problem with my diet as it is right now. As I said, my psychological disorders were high functioning. As aforementioned in my text, I didn’t specify a time frame. It was a few months ago, it isn’t recent. I try to balance out my meals as much as I can. Keto and intermittent fasting does not work for me given my natural metabolism, IBS, PCOS, hunger cues and intake of daily prescribed medicine. If you’d read the text I wrote again, I was only eating like this for a week. It isn’t my usual diet. I don’t want to do any self-diagnose myself on the internet if a doctor hasn’t said mentioned anything like this to me in real life.
Genuinely doctors don’t believe you when you say you don’t drink soda or fruit juices or diluting juice or add sugar to anything. I literally only keep granulated sugar in the house to add to maybe twice a year baking or sour tomato-based sauces, I buy a 1kg bag every couple of years. I don’t drink my calories, I only drink black coffee, tea & water, don’t eat sugary cereals etc. & guess what? I still have insulin resistance & am still “fat”.
I absolutely can't stand her. She comes across as so arrogant. The fact that she was part of The biggest loser worry about people who put on severely restricted calorie intake and exercise just about to death weighing as much as they did. And from what I've seen most of those people put the weight back on again.
I actually watched Jillian’s video on menopause. She made it seem so easy to lose weight and keep it off while going through it. My first thought after watching “um obviously she hasn’t gone through it yet”. When it’s her time, I got a feeling 1. She may disappear from social media for a minute or 2. She may change her tune and become more Empathetic to us struggling to gain control.
@@FitforFiftyish I totally agree. Menopause totally sucks. I feel like I just smell food and I gain weight I have had to make some big changes in my diet to just maintain my weight let alone losing any. I find going higher protein low carb medium healthy fats works well. And I do a little bit of intermittent fasting so I eat my breakfast late and my dinner is finished at 6:00 p.m. . I cycle most days and if I don't the wait will not move one centimeter. I have noticed a menopause means you also have a longer recovery time after doing exercise. Some woman experience muscle weakness which comes with age I've always been very strong physically but I can't say I have lost some of that strength purely due to menopause. I gain weight on my tummy which used to be as flat as a pancake. Menopause also triggered an autoimmune condition in me. Yeah so I don't take advice from women or men who have never been through menopause. I follow a nice lady on RUclips who's at the age of menopause who looks fantastic and she does promote more of a low carb lifestyle because she's realized that's what happens as you age you don't metabolize the carbs as efficiently. In fact she stated that when your estrogen drops you automatically get a little bit more insulin resistant. So you need to adjust the carbs which sucks cuz I like them. I went low carb zero sugar for 30 days. One thing is for sure sugarless coffee is disgusting to me. And I need oatmeal potatoes and rice in my life. I’ve been exercising regularly for over 20 years distance running, biking weight training etc but lately I may walk 3-4x a week for 40 mins. Some weeks I’m on my couch. Abbey’s channel is teaching me…”and that’s ok” 🤗 Chill.
As someone who had anorexia nervosa as a teenager... Jillian's approach has A LOT of red flags. If I go out to eat (if ever because yay for the pandemic and anxiety because of it), I personally never really spend a long time thinking about what I'll order any more. When I did have anorexia, I would spend hours upon hours pondering over what to eat, and if it was a chain, I'd be sure to Google the establishment, scan through their menu, calories, and macros. It's debilitating. And it must be super debilitating for Jillian herself, her family, everyone involved. Always having to be in control is not freeing in the least, not at all. You'd think you'd be free because you're at the wheel (or so you think) but it's the polar opposite. It's like making your own prison cell, locking it, keeping the key with you, and refusing to get out. It's so much more freeing when you can just live in the moment, enjoy the company of those around you and mindfully savour every bite of a meal you love because it brings you happiness. It's things like that that make life worth living.

I used to do her workouts and really liked them, but there was one dvd I had where she said “after you do this workout don’t go ruin it by eating pizza!” It always annoyed me because I’m like, ok so if I go eat pizza after this all the muscles I worked will reverse their work? The endurance I built will up and leave? She talked like life was all about calories in vs calories out but exercise is SO much more than that!
Well if you do go binge on a pizza or fast-food afterwards, because working out makes you hungry it's definitely not putting your mindset at the right place to loose weight... I don't see anything wrong with that.

I love you so much. My relationship with food has changed SO much since watching you. I don’t binge much anymore because I’m getting over the guilt of eating “bad” foods. I just remind myself to grab something WITH it to balance it out.
ugh, i mean I know this isn't specific to Jillian Michaels, but i hate the way people demonise farmed fish It is a sustained controlled way to ensure our oceans maintian biodiversity and stops over fishing! -Australia has some pretty awesome sustainable fish farms and has contributed to the global studies on this Thank you Abbey for being sensible and showing research/institutions that back up the sustainability of farmed fish
Lots of downsides for the environment when it comes to fish farms. They are breeding grounds for disease. If they are based in a natural source of water it can ruin ecosystems. The ones in the tanks have their downside in that the fish themselves are even more diseased and therefore treated with a ton of medicine and chemicals. Find out the true source of your fish and meat and reduce the amount you consume. But there is no perfect way to farm or harvest animals that leaves no damage on the scale of the population we have now.
@@Gigifrancetexas it is true that you have to be careful about where the fish farms are located but Australia is leading the way in sustainable tuna farming and a massive part of that is def being responsible for the ecosystems and the health of the farmed fish as well so i totally agree with you about doing careful research as irresponsible farms can do so much damage so its def a careful balance that needs to be maintained
Love your channel! This is where it’s important to understand everyone’s expertise area. Jillian is a fitness person.. I think everything for her comes down to the aesthetic goal… while all good dieticians including Abby (and my sister 😊) will always focus on eating well-balanced meals and understanding that people need to have a good relationship with food that fits into a HAPPY lifestyle.
I remember meeting her unexpectedly in New York probably over 5 years ago now, she was actually really approachable and down to earth. Thought I’d be super awkward but she’s easy to have a chat with. She’s also way smaller than I thought she would be in stature haha.

I suffered with orthorexia through my teens and early 20s, and in the years since, my strategy to avoid falling back into those habits have pretty much been "do not think about my diet or regular exercise at all" lol. I've been struggling with knowing that I want to live a healthier lifestyle but being afraid to make changes and potentially fall back into old disordered eating and exercise habits. Your channel has really helped me learn about nutrition and health in a way that feels good and safe to me, and while I'm not all the way there yet, the new knowledge I have from watching your channel makes thinking about my own health and diet feel a lot less scary :) Thanks Abbey!
As an actual chemist, this bs enrages me. Water is a chemical, it doesn’t mean it’s poison (although it also can be if you over-drink it! Water toxicity is real.) There’s a saying that ‘the dose equals the poison’ & that’s true of almost anything. Foods by themselves are not “poison”. Also, I used to love her. I am healthier mentally now & I don’t want to be like her, I don’t want to think like her or look like her if it means having this food fear mentality & “cheat food” mindset.

I will forever love Jillian for changing my attitude about exercise and I think she has the right idea about how to approach it. Her dvds definitely got me in great shape. Her food plans always seemed dogmatic though so I never really did them. I’m found it funny she doesn’t like almond butter either since I tried it for her 😂. Her making the cut book is a lot more respectful of how difficult it is to lose the last 10. I’m curious as to what approach you actually recommend
She helped me lose about 70 pounds !! I loved her workouts, but I ignored her diet advice ! I ate less treats (but still enjoyed them now and then), ate far more fruits and vegetables, and just tried to eat healthier overall.
If in those clips it was her screaming to people in order to work out more, yes we need a part two to establish maybe with a psychologist that WE DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE RUDE TO PEOPLE WHO HAPPEN TO WEIGH MORE THAN US. Jeez...there are dangerous trainers out there!
I hate when people act like they’re making a What I Eat in a Day video, but instead just stand there and give a laundry list of “health foods.” Like, I want to know what they actually eat and enjoy…not what all their food rules are 🙄 EDIT: but I’m pretty 👎 on Jillian because of how integral her workout videos were in my anorexia story ☹️

The willpower approach to weight loss is foolishness. The use of foods that naturally end hunger response and cutting out the macro that does the opposite is the more pragmatic and simpler approach. Bananas and homemade sugar-free cream(with xylitol or erythritol) is a great way to feel full yet still be safe health-wise.

You have changed my opinion and relationship with food for the better. I never realized that I had disordered eating until I started watching your videos. I finally realized why my unrealistic diets never worked. Thank you for helping me change my thought process when it comes to food. I no longer feel guilty for eating foods I used to categorize as bad. I honestly feel like I’m finally nourishing my body and intuitively eating. So happy to rid myself of that all or nothing dieting mentality!

I recently started watching you and I love the fact that you talk about still being able to eat "processed foods" or "bad foods" as some people call it! I myself have made a big change in our diets here (the hubby, 2 kids and me). We eat fast food occasionally, we eat treats, we eat healthy ... so we eat balanced! I myself am on a weight loss journey and lost since the changes (4 months ago) 27 lbs. With keeping a balance I don't feel I'm missing out on anything. Between you, Greg Doucette and Nicole Collet's channel I have learned a lot about making the right food choices without depriving yourself! And the thing is ... my hubby and kids don't need to lose weight whatsoever and we all choose to eat the same things, which makes things so much easier. I really think we need to move away from calling fat-shaming rhetoric "tough love." There is nothing loving about making statements that are not just unsupported by science, but are KNOWN to negatively impact people's health. Jillian has loudly and frequently bashed celebrities based solely on their size, regardless of their health habits.

Instead of focusing on what I can take away from my diet, I think about what can I add that is nutritionally dense. I’ve tried a lot of new to me foods as well. I have lost over 100 pounds with an entire medical multidisciplinary team helping me but I find your content to be more helpful. This RN thanks you!
I used to LOVE Jillian. I had been able to make peace with her hard line diet talk because a lot of what she says has some evidence to back it up. The thing that made me give her less time is the fact that when it comes to other ways to maintain your health, she dances the line between science and pseudoscience and I can’t get behind that.
Peanut butter is great and perfectly healthy. Like if she's worried about it, she should get the "all natural" kind that doesn't have added sugar or stabilizers in it. (Which is what I get because it's just more satisfying for me personally.) Anyway, I love watching your videos around mealtimes especially when I'm beating myself up about my food choices. Today I was torturing myself about whether I wanted to eat lunchable pizza or something healthier like fruit and yogurt for lunch, and your video came up and reminded me that... one lunchable PLUS a bowl of fruit yogurt is a valid meal.
She really seemed anxious when she admitted she had a couple bites of Mac and cheese and pb 😓 I remember feeling upset over minor things like this and I highly empathize. It's a miserable place to be.
Thank you for posting this. I was really turned off by Jillian when she stated that she didn't want to get pregnant because she was scared that she would get fat and not be able to get her body back. I know that she has kids now so at least she gave herself 'permission' to have a baby but it was such a problematic and harmful statement to make.

@@scarlet8078 i felt the exact opposite about the elitist part. She was stressing too much on eating organic , but everyone can’t afford to eat like that. Also eating organic is good to have if you can do it but otherwise focus should be on preaching people to eat the right kind of food rather than picking up on so many small things. Also based on my personal experience who have tried all kind of diets keto, vegan, paleo, vegetarian and intermittent fasting. Calories in calories out work all day, i eat everything now in my calories range and have lost 20 pounds. You can pick any diet and eat in restricted calories you will loose weight and also it can work exactly opposite. 80/20 rule works best for normal people .
Your videos had been truly eye opening to me, I didn't realize my relationship with food was that bad until a couple years ago and that how I look physically was that important to me. Which is not a bad thing but sometime it can come at the price of neglecting it. The thing about this video is that everything you said I knew yet never really put that much thought. I grew up watching the biggest loser and the time where I watch it like there was no tomorrow was when I had cancer. The quote of "If you haven't puked or fainted means that your body can still go". I followed it , I tell myself that once I was done I was going to recuperate my body back and be healthy. And although at one point it helped me, once I started therapy almost 5 years later I realize how toxic that behavior was because I didn't allowed myself to rest nor to feel ill. And the fact that during chemo was the healthiest I ever been yet I still needed to excuse my weight gained is so sad. Even now because of my stretch mark at doctor appointment that haven't read my medical history always thinks I was pregnant because of them and makes me feel so self conscious. Anyway, just here to remind everybody who need it that your body weight doesn't necessarily goes hand in hand with your health. And that it's okay to take a break.
I so heard that as organic breastfed yogurt. I was like WTF??? :) Not everyone is in the social economic position to either have access to these things or be able to afford the extra expense.
I haven’t watched the whole video, but isn’t it normal to recommend more humane products with often more nutrients? Like if you can afford it , you should! But you can’t force people to spend their monthly budget on food for a week. (If that is what she does further in the video, I’m sorry and your point stands)

It’s a red flag when someone feels the need tell you their food is organic, grass-fed, natural, etc. Everyone has their preferences, but it’s so ingrained in people to qualify their food choices. Just describe your meal. I don’t need a laundry list of why it was okay to eat THOSE eggs or THAT type of bread vs the alternative.
I always found her condescending as hell…cannot begin to explain how relieving it is to see someone finally calling her out for it like this. Making people feel like shit for the way they choose to eat will never “work.”

Thank you! I think that because her past was of disordered eating/higher weight, she's become super strict and focused on always working out and eating more like 90% "organic, non-crap" food. I know she feels pressure as a role model/weight loss "icon," but I really feel she's still got issues with food in the opposite direction. Woman needs to live a little!

Very good observation! There are so many promises of quick fixes in the diet and fitness industry and they're all so complicated and difficult to maintain. Never go on a diet that you can't sustain for life.

I remember years ago I did Jillian Michael's yoga video. I was and am a fit person, but it absolutely killed me. Like, not good hurt. I was completely laid up in bed for back pain for a week! I've never had back pain. Oddly enough, I love yoga now, even after that terrible experience. The difference is I'm not going full-tilt extreme yoga that beginners should never do.
Protein, fats and carbs is a ”rule of thumb” that really helps me tho’. For example if I eat spaghetti carbonara I will add some avocado on the side because that rule is in my head or if I have a smoothie I will add some healthy oil or Greek yoghurt.
I used a Jillian Michaels DVD program and “diet” several years ago. I lost so much weight and developed full-blown orthorexia, and I don’t blame Jillian. It’s unfortunate that vulnerable people like I was at the time fall into these traps.

That comment Jullian made about working out hard and therefore can afford “treat foods” was just really triggering for me. I used to work out twice a day 5-7 days a week and felt so guilty for eating a cookie. Now I eat two fudgeeos a day and that keeps me on track for my weight and health goals
Maybe I wasn’t listening to the video really well…but I didn’t take it that she was eating extra calories on her heavy workout days. As someone who has a moderate amount of background knowledge on weight training, it’s totally normal to eat more food on days you’ve trained extra hard as a means of actually fueling your body more. It has more to do with your mentality about why you’re eating more that day “I get to eat more because I ‘earned’ more” vs “I trained my body extra hard today, so it needs more of a refuel today”.

I am also a dietitian and new to your videos but I love them! Your approach to nutrition is similar to mine and these videos are really informative. I am hopeful for a future where food is not so stigmatized and divisive in society
I like Abbey, but I think she watched Jillian’s video one too many times and took it all the wrong way. J made the video in response to a question she’s gotten tens of thousands of times: “What do you eat in a day?” She’s simply answering the question…period. All this talk about how badly, guilty, and shameful Jillian comes across in her video for eating her kid’s mac-n-cheese, etc. is just not there. Stop it. Stop it right now. I think it’s unfair to get on her ass for saying her diet is only doable if you’re rich, have access to these foods, and so on. This was not a video recommending how others eat. Again, she’s directly answering a question. She’s written a shit ton of meal plans, and recipes that are nowhere as strict as her own diet. Finally, I don’t even remotely hear her saying, “My diet is the ONLY and BEST and you suck if you don’t eat like me.”
Always a little confused by these RUclips comments/communities that hate being judged and nitpicked at but rally around to judge and nitpick the diets and actions of others who have schools of thought that don't agree with them. If you want the freedom to have your Doritos, Jillian should have the freedom to have her organic Cheetos. If you want the freedom to eat all conventionally raised foods, Jillian should have the freedom to choose all organic. She has her reasons for her actions and you have yours.

im so tired of the rhetoric of "earning" yummy food. (or even earning rest and relaxation.) this morning i really wanted that early quarantine dalgona popular whipped coffee (which has 2 tablespoons of sugar, more sugar than I usually have w morning coffee and a calorically dense drink). So I made it and drank it and it was so delicious and I might have it again tomorrow. I did not plan or do an extra hard workout to "earn" this treat. In the past I've been indoctrination with "earn you pillow" at night--work so hard everyday (in everything) to earn your rest. How about NO. The way she whispered mac and cheese made my soul die a bit.
I really value the realistic and down-to-earth information you give. I can really overthink what I'm eating, and if I'm the most healthy I can be. It becomes joyless and exhausting. Thank you Abbie 💜

I once read an article in which Jillian Michaels stated she had been put in a martial arts class run by an abusive teacher in which, when she cried, the teacher cornered and attacked her and wouldn't stop attacking her until she fought her way out. That must have been a huge contributor to her current issues - she even basically admitted it, but framed it in a way that suggested she thought that martial arts class was "character-building" when in reality it fostered a permanent cornered-animal mentality that she now turns aggressively on everyone else (you know, the kind of "anger issues" that are normally associated with toxic masculinity except in this case the person inculcated with those values was a girl).
You don't do that, especially to kids - and when it comes to practicing defensive fighting, there should be consent involved - and no cornering. From what I hear, anyway, drilling some of the more difficult self-defense moves means that those will be more effective even if you are cornered at some point, and that's why normal martial arts - the non-abusive kind - is taught that way.
The information from Jillian is fine, general in fact, the problem is that she serves it up dripping in a " come on people this is basic information". To me, hearing Abby with zero judgement is much more conducive to learning info about trying a healthier choice. I love how Abby helps us learn to tailor our nutrition around living our lives instead of the opposite. Thank you Abby.

Part 2 please!!! I feel that this needs more time to fully unpack Jillian’s condescending ways of fitness and nutrition that are in actuality promoting over exercising and anorexic behaviors. Even in her older workout videos she is always talking about “gross fat” in the abdomen and “if you don’t want to be fat then don’t stop”. Hearing that while working out to her videos when I was in highschool was what fueled my ED and “revenge body” mentality. I’m so glad that you Abbey are calling out all the diet culture bs and being a fresh voice of reason!

Agreed! I got hooked on Team Body Project workout because of their inclusivity and positivity. Daniel and Alex feature people of all different sizes in their workouts and never use negative language about weight as motivation in their workouts. Prior to that I was used to RUclips fitness instructors using fat shaming terminology to motivate people during a workout. It just made me feel too uncomfortable to enjoy a workout. Jillian Michaels has helped normalise a lot of toxic language about weight and food. It’s not helpful for anyone on a fitness and/or wellness journey.
As an Irish person (from a farming family), I find it so unbelievably weird that in North America you've to define dairy/beef products as 'grass fed' because it's not the norm there. So weird that you don't allow cattle to eat their natural food source which their stomachs have evolved to digest...

It's certainly weird and sad. The Irish standards for meat are much higher than in America. The norm in America is the grain fed where grass fed is much more expensive.
And the milk and butter taste so much better in Ireland. You can really tell the difference.
Jillian Michaels seems scary, if she was my trainer or dietitian , i’d probably go once start crying and never go back. And the fitness plan on biggest looser did not seem beginners friendly. They should have started with light weights, walking, yoga , strench and work there way up.
Jillian is the stereotypical “tough” trainer. Which is disappointing because that’s been shown to be less effective than a trainer that listens and respects their clients. It’s an outdated strategy and luckily I see the industry becoming more understanding that being understanding and encouraging maintainable fitness behaviors is better in the long run.
I'd get mad, cry, yell at her, and never ever go back. I'd probably buy way too much food and stress eat at home. I can't stand her.

I think people need to move to a farm or raise a garden and only eat seasonal produce if they are going to keep worrying a about every little ingredient. Once I went on a blind date with a guy who was happy enough to order pizza, but then gave the waitress a lecture about the chemicals in soda. When we left the restaurant he started asking whether I used organic shampoo. Since he “forgot” his wallet and I had to pay for the date, I forgot to call him back.

As a university student studying ecology, who's taken some courses discussing agriculture and ecoculture I feel the need to say (that at least in the US) the reason to eat organic has absolutely everything to do with sustainable agriculture practices and nothing to do with organic foods being any "healthier" for you. For my personal sustainability goals, this means I try to buy organic versions of the food I don't already grow myself. That being said, I fully recognize that organic foods are often times more expensive and therefore less accessible. If you can't afford organic, or even if you just don't want to eat it- you do you! I would also loooove to see Abbey do a deep dive into this, even though I know agricultural practices aren't exactly your forte!

Yes!!! If I could afford organic food, I would totally buy it solely for the reason of it potentially being better for the environment because I'm all for that! Unfortunately where I live organic food is easily double the price of conventional so it's not really an option 😭
Thanks for pointing this out. I tend to skip organic because I'm cheap and figure non-organic is good enough for me. Reframing it as a bit of extra money to contribute to a healthier local ecology, well I am 100% down to pay for that. I'm lucky to live in a farming area, time to make some organic farmer buddies.
Also, buying from local small-scale farmers allows you to be familiar with their practices, so even if you aren't getting a USDA label, you know you are getting a good product. Or yeah, growing your own, even if your outdoor space is limited to a balcony.

I used to do one of her workout videos all the time about ten years ago. My mom kept it, so I decided to try it again about a year ago. I couldn't get through it. And it wasn't because I was in worse shape than before. My mindset and the way I think about my body had just changed so drastically that I couldn't stand her yelling and demeaning comments.

Same! I used to be a huge Jillian Michaels fanatic. For years, I read her books, did all her workout videos, and listened to her podcast. It only led to me sobbing on the bathroom floor because I couldn't get under 117 lbs and then cutting out my "treat" (a sugar-free egg protein smoothie, FFS), and adding an extra hour of exercise onto each workout. Took a looooooooot of therapy to undo the damage I let that woman do to me.

Ugh it’s horrible…I watched the biggest loser from when I was maybe 5 years old because I’ve been obese since I was 3. I never really thought to label it that way, but you’re right, she is a trigger. The biggest loser and just dieticians in general are that for me as well simply because seeing one always meant being shamed or not being able to enjoy food or eat when I was hungry for months afterwards. Um…is this what a trigger is? Sorry if I’m using it incorrectly.

When I was heavily overweight in university and wanted a good quick workout, I read great things about 30-day shred and bought it to use. The shaming rhetoric and constant toxicity were enough to turn me off of fitness until I was 26 when I started my continued health journey. Shame does nothing for anyone, and the fact that Gillian monetized her cruelty speaks a lot about our society’s judgment on bodies that’s very unfortunate.
just comments about your own body and feeling ugly, gross does not help you stop binge-eating. I stopped hanging out with few friends who made disparaging comments about my body. I already have a mirror at home, I don’t need people reminding me how gross I am. And I feel better alone
Jillian Michaels aided in my anorexia in high school. Now I am in no way blaming her for my choices, as I was solely responsible for my actions, but I was much less knowledgeable and so easily susceptible to molding. I watched her on Biggest Loser and followed her on all her talk show appearances, and "learned" a lot from her. Again, not her responsibility, and gossip magazines were a giant part of my "education" as well. But her name, face and voice will forever be embedded in my mind.
Really really proud of myself for moving so far away from her, as well as my former lifestyle.

Thank you for calling out the economically privileged viewpoint of Jillian's video. Organic this, organic that is just not economically possible for a significant percentage of the population. The inability to afford a certain kind of food should not be a moral failing. A bite of mac and cheese is just that. The shame faced admission that she likes peanut butter seems to come from the idea that almond butter is more sophisticated--only kids and 'plebs' would like peanut butter! There's an underlying tone of classism in this "common sense " that bothers me.

Good points, but both Walmart and Costco sell cheap organic food. A week's worth of organic greens from Costco costs less than a Whopper. Heck, it costs less than an egg, cheese, and "protein" ( your choice of) bagel sandwich at any place I can find in my city. If I had to eat on practically nothing, I'd be down to organic veggies, beans, rice, pasta, and pasta sauce from Costco. I'd be miserable, mind, because I'd miss, well, tons of flavors and foods, but I wouldn't starve.
Well, except for the bread. They have cheap organic flour and sugar, too. Not the healthiest, because it's just plain unbleached white all purpose, but it's amazing how tasty your own bread can be. Especially fresh.
Eggs, meat, dairy, though, that does get mad expensive. Especially if you add in grass-fed. That said, everything I read says the planet needs us to eat less meat. And I do know lots of pretty awful stuff about the three big meat industries.

Plus you aren’t counting in food desert where people don’t have Walmart’s or cosco. Or any sort of grocery stores to go too. They have to live on fast food or any place close enough to keep family fed. This is very much a classism thing.

Wild salmon mean loads of other fish getting killed, either accidentally caught in the net or tiny fish who get scared and hide in the salmon's gills. Farmed salmon are fed wild caught fish.
If you live on this planet, the ecosystem's health has to be taken into account when you think about the health risks of eating a food, right?

If you dive even deeper, those companies she mentioned that promote sustainability for wild caught fish, none of them are doing anything to actually SUSTAIN the salmon population. It’s sad.

I can assure you if a person in a ‘larger body’ ate a bite of their child’s Mac &Cheese a lot of people would be critical and would be happy to tell them. Jillian knows this because she is critical of anyone in a larger body.
The sad part is that the show is entirely based on that. Making fitness a competition filled with taking a lot of supplements, starving oneself, and working out until you're so sore that you cannot do much else. They have reached out to many of the other fitness people I follow, and their practices are completely shady. The key to lasting fitness that goes beyond a year or more is to receive proper nutrition (supplements are to SUPPLEMENT not replace regular food), exercise that helps you be consistent in reaching your goals, and your calorie intake should reflect your current goals

something I do want to point out about the whole "organic" thing. If you can afford to buy organic, you should, because conventional pesticides in runoff water (along with fertilizers) are making marine mammals like sea lions and elephant seals very sick. I volunteer at a marine mammal rescue that is contracted with state and federal governments to conduct research; when an animal dies in our care, we perform an autopsy, and pesticides from farming are causing diseases in these mammals. we tell the public it's one of the ways you can help preserve marine life, buying organic. The other thing you can do is to reduce your use of single-use plastic as much as possible because the marine mammals can swallow it and it makes them sick.
The problem with “organic” is that unless you know the individual farms very well, they could still be using loads of pesticides that aren’t on the banned list. Many of the pesticides that organic farms are able to use while still calling themselves organic, are studied less well and have the potential to be more harmful than banned ones. I agree with you though, that it’s good if you can find farms that are actually using more natural methods rather than polluting. But then we have the other problem regarding yield and cost. I’m really hoping that in the future we can find sustainable ways to produce food at scale that is healthy for the environment and economically viable to feed everyone on the planet.

Thanks for clarifying too that "organic" refers to pesticide use and not nutrition. So many people are confused when I try to talk to them about the "dirty dozen" and "clean fifteen" in this context when asking if organic is "better" than regular produce.

I think, though, it's important not to classify others' behavior as pathological just because it may seem more rigid than average. If it is not distressing and/or dysfunctional (e.g., doesn't have negative impacts on health or quality of life), even though it may be less "normal" doesn't deem it pathological.
Jillian also needs to concern how portraying this food this way makes it seem very privileged. Not everyone can afford grass fed and organic produce or meat.
Just because someone has different food preferences than you do, it doesn't mean they have a "disroder." Some people are just really invested in their health.

Thank you for mentioning her attitude towards those of us in larger bodies. Her "just do this" attitude reminds me of when I went to the doctor and his tip for me was to stop drinking soda, and then was condescending and didn't believe me when I said I don't drink soda regularly.

Same thing for me. 😭 One day, I had to see a gynaecologist for an emergency appointment. At the end of the appointment, the gynaecologist took my by the shoulders and told me how much to eat, what I should eat and how to eat in a condescending tone while saying I shouldn’t eat too much. I literally hadn’t had anything in 24hrs that day prior to the morning appointment and ate less that 500 calories 7 days before the appointment itself. My depression and trauma related anxiety disorder were high-functioning at that time and I couldn’t eat more than one meal a day. I physically and emotionally couldn’t. Cooking was a hassle. And to top it off, he made me think I shouldn’t eat anything at all that day, too. I had a cup noodles portion a day for a week. I was like: “He’s right… I shouldn’t be eating bad food.” It was a time when the strength in my body would leave me, my blood pressure would be terrible and my heart started acting up. I drank water whenever I could and had little food. But, even drinking wouldn’t work often times and I’d be dehydrated. I’d become nauseous and got frequent headaches. This psychological low lasted for a month (started roughly two months before that but I “functioned”) and I tried to eat at least two meals a day, but that one week was especially horrible and exhausting. I already had trauma from a previous gynaecologist I’ve visited a few years back and that gynaecologist I’m talking about triggered me. I couldn’t even eat for 8hrs after the appointment was finished. So, I hadn’t had food in literal 36 hours at this point. My body was breaking down and I had to sleep after the appointment. I cried because the female gynaecologist I’ve seen before in the same practice was on vacation and I saw a substitute male doctor. I should’ve waited for the other doctor to come back but I was scared since I have PCOS and my period wouldn’t come although I’m on hormonal therapy… But now, I realise my abdominal pain and lack of period was due to insufficient nutrients and lack of movement. I wasn’t taking care of myself. Don’t let other people belittle you. Diet and physical exercise are individual processes for everyone.

May I also suggest looking into keto and intermittent fasting. Processed carbs and sugar (even a little) cause a lot of trouble for some people. Have a look dr Jason Fung and his videos. And redefining strength on YT - Cori is a lovely instructor that actually cares about people's progress
@@mb8219 I’m doing all right, thanks for asking. I’m eating when I feel hungry and eat whatever I like (given it’s something that doesn’t mess up my hormones or elevates my IBS and PCOS). I don’t wanna restrict or find any problem with my diet as it is right now. As I said, my psychological disorders were high functioning. As aforementioned in my text, I didn’t specify a time frame. It was a few months ago, it isn’t recent. I try to balance out my meals as much as I can. Keto and intermittent fasting does not work for me given my natural metabolism, IBS, PCOS, hunger cues and intake of daily prescribed medicine. If you’d read the text I wrote again, I was only eating like this for a week. It isn’t my usual diet. I don’t want to do any self-diagnose myself on the internet if a doctor hasn’t said mentioned anything like this to me in real life.
Genuinely doctors don’t believe you when you say you don’t drink soda or fruit juices or diluting juice or add sugar to anything. I literally only keep granulated sugar in the house to add to maybe twice a year baking or sour tomato-based sauces, I buy a 1kg bag every couple of years.
I don’t drink my calories, I only drink black coffee, tea & water, don’t eat sugary cereals etc. & guess what? I still have insulin resistance & am still “fat”.
Condescending. Condescension. That is the perfect description of what I've always felt this woman epitomizes.

The fact that she was part of The biggest loser worry about people who put on severely restricted calorie intake and exercise just about to death weighing as much as they did. And from what I've seen most of those people put the weight back on again.
I actually watched Jillian’s video on menopause. She made it seem so easy to lose weight and keep it off while going through it. My first thought after watching “um obviously she hasn’t gone through it yet”. When it’s her time, I got a feeling 1. She may disappear from social media for a minute or 2. She may change her tune and become more Empathetic to us struggling to gain control.
@@FitforFiftyish I totally agree. Menopause totally sucks. I feel like I just smell food and I gain weight I have had to make some big changes in my diet to just maintain my weight let alone losing any. I find going higher protein low carb medium healthy fats works well. And I do a little bit of intermittent fasting so I eat my breakfast late and my dinner is finished at 6:00 p.m. . I cycle most days and if I don't the wait will not move one centimeter. I have noticed a menopause means you also have a longer recovery time after doing exercise. Some woman experience muscle weakness which comes with age I've always been very strong physically but I can't say I have lost some of that strength purely due to menopause. I gain weight on my tummy which used to be as flat as a pancake. Menopause also triggered an autoimmune condition in me. Yeah so I don't take advice from women or men who have never been through menopause. I follow a nice lady on RUclips who's at the age of menopause who looks fantastic and she does promote more of a low carb lifestyle because she's realized that's what happens as you age you don't metabolize the carbs as efficiently. In fact she stated that when your estrogen drops you automatically get a little bit more insulin resistant. So you need to adjust the carbs which sucks cuz I like them. I went low carb zero sugar for 30 days. One thing is for sure sugarless coffee is disgusting to me. And I need oatmeal potatoes and rice in my life.
I’ve been exercising regularly for over 20 years distance running, biking weight training etc but lately I may walk 3-4x a week for 40 mins. Some weeks I’m on my couch. Abbey’s channel is teaching me…”and that’s ok” 🤗 Chill.
As someone who had anorexia nervosa as a teenager... Jillian's approach has A LOT of red flags. If I go out to eat (if ever because yay for the pandemic and anxiety because of it), I personally never really spend a long time thinking about what I'll order any more. When I did have anorexia, I would spend hours upon hours pondering over what to eat, and if it was a chain, I'd be sure to Google the establishment, scan through their menu, calories, and macros.
It's debilitating. And it must be super debilitating for Jillian herself, her family, everyone involved. Always having to be in control is not freeing in the least, not at all. You'd think you'd be free because you're at the wheel (or so you think) but it's the polar opposite. It's like making your own prison cell, locking it, keeping the key with you, and refusing to get out.
It's so much more freeing when you can just live in the moment, enjoy the company of those around you and mindfully savour every bite of a meal you love because it brings you happiness. It's things like that that make life worth living.

I used to do her workouts and really liked them, but there was one dvd I had where she said “after you do this workout don’t go ruin it by eating pizza!” It always annoyed me because I’m like, ok so if I go eat pizza after this all the muscles I worked will reverse their work? The endurance I built will up and leave? She talked like life was all about calories in vs calories out but exercise is SO much more than that!

Lots of downsides for the environment when it comes to fish farms. They are breeding grounds for disease. If they are based in a natural source of water it can ruin ecosystems. The ones in the tanks have their downside in that the fish themselves are even more diseased and therefore treated with a ton of medicine and chemicals. Find out the true source of your fish and meat and reduce the amount you consume. But there is no perfect way to farm or harvest animals that leaves no damage on the scale of the population we have now.
If you want to eat fish that swim around in their own feces and bacteria thats on you....I'll stick with wild caught
@@Gigifrancetexas it is true that you have to be careful about where the fish farms are located but Australia is leading the way in sustainable tuna farming and a massive part of that is def being responsible for the ecosystems and the health of the farmed fish as well so i totally agree with you about doing careful research as irresponsible farms can do so much damage so its def a careful balance that needs to be maintained

Love your channel! This is where it’s important to understand everyone’s expertise area. Jillian is a fitness person.. I think everything for her comes down to the aesthetic goal… while all good dieticians including Abby (and my sister 😊) will always focus on eating well-balanced meals and understanding that people need to have a good relationship with food that fits into a HAPPY lifestyle.

I remember meeting her unexpectedly in New York probably over 5 years ago now, she was actually really approachable and down to earth. Thought I’d be super awkward but she’s easy to have a chat with. She’s also way smaller than I thought she would be in stature haha.

I suffered with orthorexia through my teens and early 20s, and in the years since, my strategy to avoid falling back into those habits have pretty much been "do not think about my diet or regular exercise at all" lol. I've been struggling with knowing that I want to live a healthier lifestyle but being afraid to make changes and potentially fall back into old disordered eating and exercise habits. Your channel has really helped me learn about nutrition and health in a way that feels good and safe to me, and while I'm not all the way there yet, the new knowledge I have from watching your channel makes thinking about my own health and diet feel a lot less scary :) Thanks Abbey!

As an actual chemist, this bs enrages me. Water is a chemical, it doesn’t mean it’s poison (although it also can be if you over-drink it! Water toxicity is real.)
There’s a saying that ‘the dose equals the poison’ & that’s true of almost anything. Foods by themselves are not “poison”.
Also, I used to love her. I am healthier mentally now & I don’t want to be like her, I don’t want to think like her or look like her if it means having this food fear mentality & “cheat food” mindset.
When you're a millionaire like Jillian Michaels, grass fed, grass finished beef is just a home delivery (or personal assistant trip to the store) away. But I know her style appeals to all the wanna be rich on social media.
I will forever love Jillian for changing my attitude about exercise and I think she has the right idea about how to approach it. Her dvds definitely got me in great shape. Her food plans always seemed dogmatic though so I never really did them. I’m found it funny she doesn’t like almond butter either since I tried it for her 😂. Her making the cut book is a lot more respectful of how difficult it is to lose the last 10. I’m curious as to what approach you actually recommend
She helped me lose about 70 pounds !! I loved her workouts, but I ignored her diet advice ! I ate less treats (but still enjoyed them now and then), ate far more fruits and vegetables, and just tried to eat healthier overall.
Same! I lost over 80 pounds doing her workouts and eating healthier. I personally love her for her harshness but I understand she's not for everyone!

The willpower approach to weight loss is foolishness. The use of foods that naturally end hunger response and cutting out the macro that does the opposite is the more pragmatic and simpler approach.
Bananas and homemade sugar-free cream(with xylitol or erythritol) is a great way to feel full yet still be safe health-wise.

You have changed my opinion and relationship with food for the better. I never realized that I had disordered eating until I started watching your videos. I finally realized why my unrealistic diets never worked. Thank you for helping me change my thought process when it comes to food. I no longer feel guilty for eating foods I used to categorize as bad. I honestly feel like I’m finally nourishing my body and intuitively eating. So happy to rid myself of that all or nothing dieting mentality!

I recently started watching you and I love the fact that you talk about still being able to eat "processed foods" or "bad foods" as some people call it! I myself have made a big change in our diets here (the hubby, 2 kids and me). We eat fast food occasionally, we eat treats, we eat healthy ... so we eat balanced! I myself am on a weight loss journey and lost since the changes (4 months ago) 27 lbs. With keeping a balance I don't feel I'm missing out on anything. Between you, Greg Doucette and Nicole Collet's channel I have learned a lot about making the right food choices without depriving yourself! And the thing is ... my hubby and kids don't need to lose weight whatsoever and we all choose to eat the same things, which makes things so much easier. I really think we need to move away from calling fat-shaming rhetoric "tough love." There is nothing loving about making statements that are not just unsupported by science, but are KNOWN to negatively impact people's health. Jillian has loudly and frequently bashed celebrities based solely on their size, regardless of their health habits.

Peanut butter is good. I don't even like almond butter, not sure what the big hype--unless you're allergic of course.
I used to LOVE Jillian. I had been able to make peace with her hard line diet talk because a lot of what she says has some evidence to back it up. The thing that made me give her less time is the fact that when it comes to other ways to maintain your health, she dances the line between science and pseudoscience and I can’t get behind that.
Peanut butter is great and perfectly healthy. Like if she's worried about it, she should get the "all natural" kind that doesn't have added sugar or stabilizers in it. (Which is what I get because it's just more satisfying for me personally.)
Anyway, I love watching your videos around mealtimes especially when I'm beating myself up about my food choices. Today I was torturing myself about whether I wanted to eat lunchable pizza or something healthier like fruit and yogurt for lunch, and your video came up and reminded me that... one lunchable PLUS a bowl of fruit yogurt is a valid meal.
that sounds Yum! I sometimes feel the same but it comes down to: If i dont eat it now I will eat it tomorrow so why deny myself?
I also love the 100% peanut butter. It tastes nuttier than the other really smooth kind that doesn't separate!
Unfortunately, peanut butter is full of mould and highly inflammatory omega-6s. It’s a killer but I love it. 🤷🏻♀️

She really seemed anxious when she admitted she had a couple bites of Mac and cheese and pb 😓 I remember feeling upset over minor things like this and I highly empathize. It's a miserable place to be.

Thank you for posting this. I was really turned off by Jillian when she stated that she didn't want to get pregnant because she was scared that she would get fat and not be able to get her body back. I know that she has kids now so at least she gave herself 'permission' to have a baby but it was such a problematic and harmful statement to make.

@@scarlet8078 i felt the exact opposite about the elitist part. She was stressing too much on eating organic , but everyone can’t afford to eat like that. Also eating organic is good to have if you can do it but otherwise focus should be on preaching people to eat the right kind of food rather than picking up on so many small things. Also based on my personal experience who have tried all kind of diets keto, vegan, paleo, vegetarian and intermittent fasting. Calories in calories out work all day, i eat everything now in my calories range and have lost 20 pounds. You can pick any diet and eat in restricted calories you will loose weight and also it can work exactly opposite. 80/20 rule works best for normal people .

Your videos had been truly eye opening to me, I didn't realize my relationship with food was that bad until a couple years ago and that how I look physically was that important to me. Which is not a bad thing but sometime it can come at the price of neglecting it. The thing about this video is that everything you said I knew yet never really put that much thought. I grew up watching the biggest loser and the time where I watch it like there was no tomorrow was when I had cancer. The quote of "If you haven't puked or fainted means that your body can still go". I followed it , I tell myself that once I was done I was going to recuperate my body back and be healthy. And although at one point it helped me, once I started therapy almost 5 years later I realize how toxic that behavior was because I didn't allowed myself to rest nor to feel ill. And the fact that during chemo was the healthiest I ever been yet I still needed to excuse my weight gained is so sad. Even now because of my stretch mark at doctor appointment that haven't read my medical history always thinks I was pregnant because of them and makes me feel so self conscious.
Anyway, just here to remind everybody who need it that your body weight doesn't necessarily goes hand in hand with your health. And that it's okay to take a break.
I so heard that as organic breastfed yogurt. I was like WTF??? :) Not everyone is in the social economic position to either have access to these things or be able to afford the extra expense.

I haven’t watched the whole video, but isn’t it normal to recommend more humane products with often more nutrients? Like if you can afford it , you should! But you can’t force people to spend their monthly budget on food for a week. (If that is what she does further in the video, I’m sorry and your point stands)
I’m soo impressed with how much research and thought you put into your videos! They are incredible and can be really eye opening for people who struggle with their eating, you’re changing the narrative!
It’s a red flag when someone feels the need tell you their food is organic, grass-fed, natural, etc. Everyone has their preferences, but it’s so ingrained in people to qualify their food choices. Just describe your meal. I don’t need a laundry list of why it was okay to eat THOSE eggs or THAT type of bread vs the alternative.

Thank you! I think that because her past was of disordered eating/higher weight, she's become super strict and focused on always working out and eating more like 90% "organic, non-crap" food. I know she feels pressure as a role model/weight loss "icon," but I really feel she's still got issues with food in the opposite direction. Woman needs to live a little!

The diet and fitness industry has never been bigger yet obesity keeps going up. It’s obviously not the answer to this problem.
Very good observation! There are so many promises of quick fixes in the diet and fitness industry and they're all so complicated and difficult to maintain. Never go on a diet that you can't sustain for life.

I remember years ago I did Jillian Michael's yoga video. I was and am a fit person, but it absolutely killed me. Like, not good hurt. I was completely laid up in bed for back pain for a week! I've never had back pain.
Oddly enough, I love yoga now, even after that terrible experience. The difference is I'm not going full-tilt extreme yoga that beginners should never do.
Protein, fats and carbs is a ”rule of thumb” that really helps me tho’. For example if I eat spaghetti carbonara I will add some avocado on the side because that rule is in my head or if I have a smoothie I will add some healthy oil or Greek yoghurt.
I used a Jillian Michaels DVD program and “diet” several years ago. I lost so much weight and developed full-blown orthorexia, and I don’t blame Jillian. It’s unfortunate that vulnerable people like I was at the time fall into these traps.
Food is expensive and getting worse everyday. Can't always afford the healthiest food buy. Just do your best.

That comment Jullian made about working out hard and therefore can afford “treat foods” was just really triggering for me. I used to work out twice a day 5-7 days a week and felt so guilty for eating a cookie. Now I eat two fudgeeos a day and that keeps me on track for my weight and health goals

Maybe I wasn’t listening to the video really well…but I didn’t take it that she was eating extra calories on her heavy workout days. As someone who has a moderate amount of background knowledge on weight training, it’s totally normal to eat more food on days you’ve trained extra hard as a means of actually fueling your body more. It has more to do with your mentality about why you’re eating more that day “I get to eat more because I ‘earned’ more” vs “I trained my body extra hard today, so it needs more of a refuel today”.

I’m sure you get this a lot but this is....so refreshing. Like a burden lifted to hear how you speak about, really anything. It’s exhausting to be in constant turmoil, fretting, agony, guilt and competition. I want to find another way to view food and my body. I do appreciate your content and ive really enjoyed learning. I like Abbey, but I think she watched Jillian’s video one too many times and took it all the wrong way. J made the video in response to a question she’s gotten tens of thousands of times: “What do you eat in a day?” She’s simply answering the question…period. All this talk about how badly, guilty, and shameful Jillian comes across in her video for eating her kid’s mac-n-cheese, etc. is just not there. Stop it. Stop it right now. I think it’s unfair to get on her ass for saying her diet is only doable if you’re rich, have access to these foods, and so on. This was not a video recommending how others eat. Again, she’s directly answering a question. She’s written a shit ton of meal plans, and recipes that are nowhere as strict as her own diet. Finally, I don’t even remotely hear her saying, “My diet is the ONLY and BEST and you suck if you don’t eat like me.”
I think some people are missing Jillian's sense of humour when she talks about almond butter or her kids Mac and cheese.

Always a little confused by these RUclips comments/communities that hate being judged and nitpicked at but rally around to judge and nitpick the diets and actions of others who have schools of thought that don't agree with them. If you want the freedom to have your Doritos, Jillian should have the freedom to have her organic Cheetos. If you want the freedom to eat all conventionally raised foods, Jillian should have the freedom to choose all organic. She has her reasons for her actions and you have yours.

im so tired of the rhetoric of "earning" yummy food. (or even earning rest and relaxation.) this morning i really wanted that early quarantine dalgona popular whipped coffee (which has 2 tablespoons of sugar, more sugar than I usually have w morning coffee and a calorically dense drink). So I made it and drank it and it was so delicious and I might have it again tomorrow. I did not plan or do an extra hard workout to "earn" this treat. In the past I've been indoctrination with "earn you pillow" at night--work so hard everyday (in everything) to earn your rest. How about NO. The way she whispered mac and cheese made my soul die a bit.
