    Thanks for this info! I am looking to upgrade my audio from a Rode Lavalier GO Lapel Mic. I create talking-head RUclips videos in a fairly well-treated room and plan to upgrade to a boom mic above my head. I would like to find the best mic that I can plug straight into camera (Fuji XT3), so I don’t have to sync audio in post.
    I’m considering the Rode VideoMic NTG , NTG2, NGT4+, and Sennheiser MKE 600. Which of these mics do you think would be better for my application? I have heard the MKE 600 has better audio quality (Although I would not be powering the MKE 600 via XLR), but I wonder if the difference would justify getting that over the Rode- which has a power system that I can more easily charge, is cheaper, and seems to sound great. The Rode also has a gain knob on the mic so I could avoid using the camera’s gain. My RUclips channel is called Hope Through Prophecy in case you would like to see my current setup. Thanks for any help!

      @@dunnadidit Quick question before I do buy one. Audio level: Does it gain pretty good with the volume level knob? I've got Canon DSLRs so you probably know the audio on those is pretty crappy with a lot of hiss. I'm using RODE videomics (the ones with the 9v batt) and they are ok at best. Guess that with the NTG capsule it should be much better.
      Your thoughts?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад

      It’s definitely a good loud mic. I do notice it has a bit of a noise floor going on but it’s nothing crazy. I only have the older videomic pro to compare to and it’s definitely better.

    how would it compare tot he NT3?

  • @electrichimp
    @electrichimp 4 года назад +1

    Hi! So, I’m a complete sound-rookie and was hoping you could help me understand the real differences between XLR and 3.5mm microphones. From what I’ve been able to learn, the basic differences are: 1. XLR cables are balanced and a safer way to do long connections without having interferences; and 2. XLR mics need phantom power to work. But other than that, do XLR microphones output better sound quality compared to a good 3.5mm microphone? If the only real advance of XLR only comes with their cables… Wouldn't it be better to use a 3.5mm microphone (which tends to be more versatile, like the Rode Video NTG) and use and 3.5mm-to-XLR converter when you need to do a long connection to continue using the more trusted XLR cables?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад +1

      You have a pretty great understanding of it really! XLR is basically just a more robust and secure connection but in the end they’re doing very similar things. 3.5mm is more likely to have issues with interference but cheap XLR cables can too. Also, not all XLR mics need phantom power but XLR cables allow for the possibility of phantom power. Honestly... it’s very much less about the microphone and more about the cable.

    • @electrichimp
      @electrichimp 4 года назад +2

      @@dunnadidit thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Yess, that’s what i was trying to get at: if the microphones aren’t really better or worse and the real advantage is the cable connection... If I was trying to avoid buying extra mics, I could in theory just buy a 3.5mm mic and, if i needed to do a long connection, I could use an XLR cable with an XLR to 3.5mm adapter... right? 🤔 (sorry in advance for all the rumbling)

    Great video! Thanks for the valuable information! Question for anyone that may be in the know. I recently purchased the Videomic NTG hybrid to use atop my Canon M50 for vlogging and for boom placement for talking head video. The NTG works great atop the camera with the supplied Rode SC10 patch cable.
    B&H (multiple reps) ensured me the Rode SC1 extension cable would work to connect the NTG to the M50 for boom application (since the NTG can accept both TRS or TRRS cables). The SC1 does not work. Read online that others had a similar experience. However I have not been able to find info on what cable would work to connect the Videomic NTG to the M50 for boom application. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Good luck to all!

    Informative video, Dunna. Thank you. However, I sincerely would like to know how this mic works with the iPhone 15 Pro Max using its USB-C port. While I can use the 3.5mm jack with an adapter, I would prefer to use this mic with its direct USB-C connection with my iPhone 15 Pro max. Many users have complained of awful noise, clipping and awful audio with this mic and the iPhone 15 Pro models. I want to know, do you experience this? If you do, are there any settings which you’ve successfully used to adjust your audio? Can you inform me please? Thanks.

      Generally I attach the mic to the camera, but you can use a friction arm to attach it to a switchpod.

    I film my regular videos in my apartment and have to deal with an air exchange/heat pump hum in the background which feeds my upstairs neighbour, but is located in the basement where my apartment is. I can't turn it off, so that hum in the background is always there and quite annoying. I'm forced to use a Procaster XLR mic fed into a mixer which then feeds the camera. I assume this mic still wouldn't meet my need of cutting out that much hum I have in the background, because I also have the Videomic Pro and it's unusable, there is just too much hum.
    If were you to compare this mic with the Videomic pro you have, how do you feel the NTG does cutting out white noise or background noise vs the Videomic pro?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад

      I still have to turn off my fridge when I record lol so I don't think this will fix the problem. I found both those mics to be similar in their ability to block out the noise off axis.

      The shock mount has a normal 1/4” 20 thread on the bottom (with the small adapter in it) so you can attach to a tripod!

    Would the Rode VideoMic NTG work well with the Arri Alexa Mini as long as you have the proper adapters to plug it in? The Alexa Mini doesn't have a built-in preamp, but this mic claims to have infinitely variable gain that can output at mic or line level, so in theory a preamp shouldn't be needed. Also, this would just be for scratch audio purposes.

Also, if you can do this, are you able to turn the mic 90 degrees and slide it back on? Would be really useful to know this for my rig.
