Good video Derek. However, for nature videos I will recommend getting a field recorder such as the Zoom F3 or Tascam X8 and Micbooster Stereo microphones or LOM Usi Pro's microphones. The sound will be much better than that of the rode video mic NTG and you will be very pleased. Just a though, not saying you wont get good sound with the NTG videomic. Cheers! Also , if you want a focus sound look at Telinga parabolic microphone dish.

Hi Would you say that the mics already attached to the X8 (or X6) recorder can get clean nature ambiant sounds ? I have a videomic NTG but am considering the X6 (with included mics, which I know are not the best) for a better and portable easy solution. Thanks a lot.

@@adrien_marsaud The X8 build in mics sound great. They are low build quality though. Ill will highly recommend to you the micbooster stereo xlr microphones if you go the X8 route. If you decide on the x6 i recommend the same micbooster mics but you can choose XLR or 3.5mm mics.

Thank you! Although it is not what you were looking for, it is actually what I am looking for as I hope to mount it to a bicycle and pick up sounds behind and to the sides.

Thanks for sharing this its very informative. Im very new to nature recording but I have just brought a Video Mic Pro to try out. Im too getting that phantom wind noise, i get the impression that this is the noise from the leaves moving rather than the rumble of the wind hitting the mic

Another excellent video review Derek. Thanks for doing it.
Your enthusiasm and obvious passion for your subject are inspiring. After watching your vidoes I always feel a need to "get back out there" and record more nature/wildife.
Just out of interest, how have you got on with the NTG5 on your XF400?
I'm thinking of getting one for my HC-X20 but all the reviews I've found focus on using it with human voices rather than wildlife filming.
Is the NTG5 significantly better for any of the things you found disappointing in the Videomic NTG (distant noises, off-axis rejection etc)?
I'd really appreciate your thoughts before spending the extra money.
If they're much the same I may just accept the limitations of the VM NTG, but I don't mind paying the extra if the NTG5 will give better results, particularly for the criteria you discussed in your video.
    Thanks again.

Just wondering what dji action cam do you have? I have the Dji Osmo action 4 and the same rode ntg you have and it works just fine on mine.

I'm really curious about using this mic recording water. I agree most mics don't record water very well. Sounds unnatural and not close to what I'm hearing. Have you tried it on water tumbling over boulders?
