Cycling Mikey guide to "road safety" content creation:
    - Find a subject driver
    - Put yourself in the worst possible position
    - Wait for the inevitable issues
    - Yell at the driver, make a video, and report them
    - Act like anyone criticising your own actions are haters and anti-cyclist, their views mean nothing if it doesn't fit your narrative.

I commented on one of Mikey's clips recently. He was filtering down the middle of the road looking in car windows. He slams on the brakes with no warning to film a phone user. He had several cyclists and moped riders behind him. They all had to stop and wait for oncoming traffic to pass before they could go around him. I commented that he should be careful suddenly stopping like that. He replied "its their fault if they hit me, they shouldn't be traveling so close" He had no regard for traffic flow and his militant vigilantly mentality trumps all other road users apparently.

@@smilerbob Greetings from Canterbury with a similar weather pattern. Driving home from North Greenwich yesterday (after attending Everything Electric London at Excel), it was very windy and I often kept my speed down to around 55 mph. Even slower when crossing the Medway bridge on the M2 where I could feel the wind even more. Was surprised to see others still driving at 70 mph+ in such strong winds. The O2 cable car was actually cancelled for the return journey from Excel to O2 in the afternoon, which I had suspected in advance would happen and hence bought only one way tickets for the two of us. Caught the DLR & underground for the journey back to O2.
Tomorrow it's off to London Olympia for the Ideal Home Show. As always, I'll endeavour to get some "quality" driving in for the return journey. I avoid driving through London itself and instead go clockwise around the M25 and then east along the M4. Park in Hammersmith and then walk around 20 mins along Kensington High Street to Olympia. Parking already booked in advance as it's much more cost effective..and considerably less than parking at Olympia itself, as well as far less crowded. The journey back to Canterbury is simply the exact same route in the reverse direction, again avoiding the shorter route through London.

That's because these sort of riders anticipate problems (I'd argue their anticipation for what's going to happen is way above average) but instead of mitigating them they actively try and exacerbate the problems further combine this with a real belief that every action that everyone else takes is to spite them personally and you have the recipe for your average camera cyclist/ driver.
Let's also not forget that you're not incentivised to cause issues through money and/or exposure which I imagine does drive their behaviour somewhat.

When there is a problem the cards come out, they go in the PC and I review the footage. Did I do something wrong, or is it the other person who was wrong (or making a mountain out of a mole hill)? If it is the former I try and learn from it, if it is the latter also I try and learn from it so as not to potentially trigger people again in the same way. The thing I've found with a lot of these 'bike vs car' incidents is that the drivers are the ultimate idiots, but sometimes the cyclist makes it slightly worse.
The point I'm making is that cyclists get so much hate when in reality the drivers do a lot worse.
I'm not in any way defending cyclingmikey - he's a bit of an idiot on his bike. I'm just saying that people overlook the 95% of cyclists who obey the law and are sensible, instead pointing the finger at the 5% who do something wrong.
But this attitude won't change - it doesn't matter how many studies show that bikes break the law much less than cars, people will still blame the bikes for the issues cars cause. People will always hate on bikes just because they don't understand basic concepts like level of risk to bikes and induced demand.
My main point is that bikes shouldn't have to share the road with cars. They also shouldn't be subject to all the same rules as cars, instead they should be protected by both laws and good bike infrastructure.
UK law basically treats bikes and cars as the same thing, but they're not.

@@simonharris4873 But the point is that drivers break the law a lot more than cyclists do.
I agree that bikes absolutely should stop at pedestrian crossings, but I've never seen someone not stop.
I will admit something - a few weeks ago I was so focused on someone about to overtake me that I didn't even notice a pedestrian crossing light... I don't think it was red, but I'll admit that I was completely unaware at that point - and I'm sure I'd have made it onto Ashley's cycling fails!
Anyway, the point is that drivers do a lot worse than cyclists. And cycling does a lot less damage than driving.
I don't know where you live, but here in the UK cyclists get SO much hate when our drivers here are pretty terrible too.
But as I said in my initial comment, some people will never accept that cycling is a good mode of transport, no matter how good it is.
I also think that bikes should be able to (slowly) go through red / red+amber lights if they're sure it's safe, as it allows them to get a headstart from cars. This helps keep the bikes safer and also helps drivers as well as they don't have to wait behind bikes.
But ideally yes, everyone would stop at pedestrian lights. But in the UK I see SO MANY cars running the red at the pedestrian crossing near my house. Every single day. And I've never seen a single bike go through (except one who I let go).
Think what you think, but cars break the laws a lot more than bikes. That's been proved so many times.

*Comment for the CyclingMikey Clip:* I remember thinking when the video was originally released that Mikey didn't do himself any favours. He must've known from past experience that the road narrowed into a single lane. I seriously doubt that was his first time down that stretch of road. Mikey definitely needs to adopt a bit of merging sequencing etiquette. The taxi was in front of Mikey approaching the single lane but Mikey decided to recklessly overtake at that point. As you say "make it a non event", no point in drama on the roads, it only serves to raise tempers (and probably blood pressure!). I get plenty of people cut me up around my way and change to my lane without being far enough in front of me and giving a safe amount of space when I'm in my car (not merges, just lane changes), but I'm like my dad in that respect - maybe a little shake of the head, maybe a swear under the breath, but no agg or remonstration at the driver. Keep them in front of you where you can make sure you see them, as you've also pointed out some times! CM is putting himself in harm's way.

Standing in the road (with back to oncoming vehicles) trying to direct traffic (without the authority to do so) isn't actually legal... and since CM already has sufficient evidence, what follows is simply to get "content" for his channel. The cars mounting the pavement to get past the obstruction; cyclists also ignoring the keep left, or cycling on pavement, he ignores and since the law changed recently (ignoring the keep left sign there being a council, not police, matter) there seems to be less drama now. While cycling on the wrong side of the road tapping on car windows and getting into arguments seems a bigger distraction than mobile phone use in stationary vehicles (6pts + £150 fine). Again tho' CM should not be engaging with drivers, it's simply to get "content" and so I do mind CM because it's not about road safety at all, it's money and notoriety he seeks. I view him more as a public nuisance.
I do agree it's better to let things go (and that's not always easy), while everybody makes mistakes; some road layouts are frankly bizarre and with variable speed limits; (Home Office approved) 24/7 robot policing (with fines for giving it the "bird"); it looks like "Big Brother" will coin it in and CM footage won't be required, except perhaps as evidence used against him.
Holding up traffic for 20+ minutes at Gandalf corner; that's entirely for CM's benefit and the more anger he can create the better for him. A camera there would put a stop to this.

I remember very well the recent opening clip at the roadworks merge in turn. It's interesting how some drivers will make a big deal out of something so routine and could have gone so much more smoothly without any aggro whatsoever. As Ashley said, "It is what it is". Oh well.

I admit that I used to watch, and at times 'like' the videos that Cycling Mikey put together, but as this video shows (and many others before it) he just became a bit too confrontational with his approach - not just with his cycling but how he engages with other people, as with the taxi driver when he feels in the 'right' and did no wrong. As Ashley pointed out, also not challenging other cyclists when they are doing something they shouldn't leads to thoughts of double standards but he also cannot, on numerous occasions, hold his hand up to his own errors. Which is why I only see his videos now on Ashley's channel, much better interpretation of events, what can and should have been done differently to put yourself in position of safety and minimise the risks while cycling - after all, cycling is an activity that should be enjoyed and not one where you put yourself in danger and then shout the odds at someone who did nothing wrong.

At around 3:55 the taxi was already in front of CM & with the left lane closure coming up a short distance away. So it would have made sense to let the taxi "merge in turn" first rather than try to close the space down on a bike. To be a space closer on a bike when you are up against a taxi and hence far more vulnerable makes very little sense anyway, regardless of who is right or wrong. Even more so when it was legitimately the taxi's turn to merge.

Like Jeremy Vine, Mikey has a habit of putting himself in a compromised position deliberately and then playing the victim - and manufactured clips like this do more damage than good to the cause of cycling safety in the UK.

Again, I wouldn't do this myself, I always stop for red lights as a cyclist, but in terms of danger there is no comparison. It's just whataboutery to say so. Yes, the taxi driver perhaps shouldn’t have gone as much as they did but they were slowing and it appeared Mikey was slowing with. Trying to keep safe or making it closer? Not sure on that one
Would Mikey have done the same had the taxi remained in lane 2 and cycled up the nearside to force in front? Maybe 🤷🏻‍♂️
We all have a responsibility out there and being aware of everyone around you is important just as much as knowing what space others are going into. What is that phrase again….

This can appear as bias sometimes and I can see why some would see it that way but I don't, I see it as education to help cyclists stay safe out there and to look after themselves more.
I am aware there has been issues in the past with Mikey and Ashley but I do believe that Ashley will say things in hope that it will help Mikey, and other cyclists in their future rides to avoid dangerous situations regardless of who is right or who is wrong

I really do think police should allocate resources to dealing with cyclists like this and prosecute them the same way a driver would be. He has no clue about road safety and is too busy trying to create events for clout and money, also their reaction to report every little thing that irks them is a real downside of modern-day cameras, that taxi driver's licence is his livelihood, puts food on his table and you jeopardise that by reporting every little non- event, its all a big laugh for them but for others thats their life.

Very frustrating, I support Mikey's advocacy for better road safety, the fact Gandalf Corner is a thing is absolutely nuts as I'd never dream of skipping round a traffic island to beat traffic, but here he's absolutely let himself down. I'm torn about the whole 'riding with camera' thing now as I DO NOT want to be associated with this behaviour, that is NOT why I wear a camera. I don't want content, a good ride for me is when I can clear the camera afterwards, and that's 99.9% of my rides.

It's good what you're doing here Ash, making people aware of what cyclists can and should do whilst also highlighting the unfortunate trend of cyclists uploading their own mistakes but under the guise that everyone else is at fault.
CyclingMikey and Jeremy Vine spring to mind.
These people ride around, sometimes as if they are a pedestrian at a zoo, just criss crossing around, running red lights, no form or discipline in what they are doing but shout at cars for no reason at all.

I've thought Mikey's overly assertive cycling style seems likely to end badly quite often, but I do respect him for what he's trying to do.
We need to take into account that there is a huge difference between the consequences of a car getting hit by a bicycle versus the other way round.
I lost the whole front end of my VW LT van after a lorry driver was on the phone trying to find his way lost in North London, I literally avoided death or serious injury by inches, if a cyclist had hit me I doubt he'd have even left a dent.
( BTW. The artic driver admitted fault immediately and I got a brand new van within 2 weeks. He was actually a really nice guy, just not used to London and really shouldn't have been using his phone as a satnav.

Cyclists should cycle like they are driving a car: follow all the rules of the road; give priority rather than take it; etc. Hostility either way isn't achieving anything!
People are terrible on the roads (regardless of bike or car), we all just need to take a step back and relax a little. And you Ashley, are doing a great job teaching that: my driving and cycling has improved so much with your videos. 'Make a situation a non-situation' is the best advice for avoiding incidents and harm.
