    Dude, this was great. I joined an affiliate several years ago and the coach gave me a nutrition orientation and exposed me to Paleo, which gradually figured out and applied. He also had an optional weigh-in for members at the beginning of every months. I started seeing immediate results - every month, the weight was coming off.. As a result, I went to as many classes a week as I could, and the results reinforced paleo eating. I lost 50 lbs in less than a year. I was hooked. I joined a second affiliate after the pandemic (first one closed). No discussion about food, sleep - just hard/heavy WODs. I miss the first place. I now workout of my garage - alone. Too bad you're not in Los Angeles - would join in a heartbeat.

    THANK YOU Andrew... I am former Co owner and can tell you that this was a fight I was always having... but it was and still is a hill I will die on. And the hill is simple... It's that 95-98% of your membership just want to come in and sweat, with the purpose of looking and feeling better - They do not care about all the extra stuff like the breakdown of range of motion or the mindset of an athlete, nor do they want to spend 15 minutes of a class drilling down technique or skill building...there is a place for that yes, but as you mentioned in the video, its your job to give them that during movement without them even noticing. I think what happens a lot is that affiliate owners are competitors and love and live for all the small extra stuff that comes along with competitive training. and don't get me wrong, I am a competitor and live and breath all the small stuff and the science behind it, but I always knew that that was just me and that no one else really cares...and guess what...that is okay. If you own a gym, you can always offer a "competitor" class were you can go over strategy and stimulus intent until you are blue in the face...you can offer weekend clinics to sharpened or develop skills as well. But ultimately, your program should cater to the 95% and not the 5%. you should not have 95% of your class always scaling movements in a wod...instead, have Scale UPs simply by keeping things simple, and saying, hey, RX + is Ring Muscle Ups or RX is Lunges while RX + is pistols...you get the point...anyways..again Thank you - sincerely a guy that agrees with you on this.

    When I was coaching in a CrossFit gym THE SECOND the class started we were moving. I’d just have everyone start on a machine, crank the music, and I’d call out movements we were doing in the warm up. Id run around catching up with everyone, and demo the movement for those who were newer.
    The amount of gyms I’ve gone to that drone on at the whiteboard for 20 min at the start of class is too many.

    I consider that if you want to talk, you’d need to find the time to, otherwise you’ll miss the point.
    As a coach sometimes I find something really interesting, that we would like to share with everyone but then I realise not everyone wants to know it, and that could be the best piece of advice I could’ve given in my earlier days. So one of the things I learned is, treating everyone as a 5 years old, keeping them busy, interested and not over complicating things, and if they are more interested I like to create spaces where they can learn more, while moving. Oh well, great content. ❤

    agree on most Hillman but a big diff between crossfit and Orange theory, F45 and others is any person can step in to the latter and do everything the first day. it takes months or even years for some crossfitters to handle a barbell properly or learn the rig movements. some people just don’t wanna have to do high skill movements. those other places are simple compared to what we do 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @beansofhorrorshalashaska6987
      @beansofhorrorshalashaska6987 6 месяцев назад

      Those other places are simple because they suck. They have bullshit exercise selection so people can “feel good” (which, okay, is fine for health and longevity) but does nothing for performance. Tried and true: heavy barbell compounds, basic “military” calisthenics (pushup, pull-up, sit up, lunge, etc), kettlebells, boxes, dumbbells, and cardio (run, row, bike, ski). Fuck all those other places with their weak candy-ass shit.

  • @spencergsmith
    @spencergsmith 6 месяцев назад +5

    This is great, but I have one question and one comment:
    1) How does CrossFit gets these 5 things wrong? From everything I’ve seen, they espouse all the same things you’re saying.
    2) Do AS MUCH as you can in an hour is absolutely correct, but that shouldn’t necessarily be mistaken for more volume in the workouts. Most people need one intense workout per day, ranging from 5 to 30 minutes (occasionally longer), not a watered down strength + metcon every day.

    • @hillerfit
      @hillerfit  6 месяцев назад +4

      Go to enough affiliates, and you'll see that just about all are missing a minimum of 2 of these 5. If not all 5.

      @spencergsmith 6 месяцев назад

      @@hillerfit fair enough, I thought you were referring to CrossFit as a methodology or a brand.
      For what it's worth, my coaches and I strive hard to make sure we're addressing all of these factors, and I personally know many other Affiliate owners who would say the same. There are many sub-par CF gyms, yes, but there are also many who are holding the standard high.
      P.S. Thanks for addressing the thumbs around the bar when hanging. Too many people don't know the inefficiency (and danger) of kipping with thumbs on top of the bar.

    Agree on the talking. You go to an hour class at orange theory and you are probably working out 45 minutes. My gripe sometimes about CrossFit is the hour class only involved 1 strength lift and then 8 minute emom or something. 18 minutes of working out is meh and definitely not enough to lose weight for those who want to. That means 42 minutes of the class were talking or warming up etc. I like CrossFit but I think the class structure varies so widely day to day and coach to coach that it falls short when compared to the hyper structured bootcamps or classes at big boxes. Just my thought

    It’s only been about 1.5 years since I re-took my L1, the talks on nutrition are fantastic. The points of sleep , water, stress and recovery are never really a focus point. Hope you bring that to HQ attention. We all were wrapped up in movement quality and intensity the lifestyle basics were skipped. Great points tho.

    There is a video you did a while ago talking about deadlift and putting on equipment/taking shoes off and when i look at what i'm doing that day and deciding wither i need equipment or not that video plays through my head. I use equipment but only when it is necessary (heavy days). Tried using wraps when doing bar work but i hate them. Would rather feel the bar when trying to hang from it than have a bit of fabric in between, plus i have tiny hands so can't hold on with them.
