I agree about Lifeson - he is unique and has always been my favorite guitarist, followed by SRV, Jeff Healy, Mark Knopfler
Lifeson’s solo playing is very emotional -kinetic, frenetic, and always -ALWAYS- is Informed by the lyrics. His playing is always contextual and phrasing is: lyrical.😎
I describe Alex’s soloing as “organized chaos.” It’s more prominent on certain songs, but it comes together well and makes him more unique than anyone I’ve heard. Great reaction!
As far as Alex's guitar playing, he can play ANYTHING! Technical guitarists drive me crazy...IT'S THE SPIRIT OF THE DELIVERY THAT MATTERS MOST!!!
“When I leave I don’t know what I’m hoping to find, and when I leave I don’t know what I’m leaving behind.” Great lyric, I didn’t realize how true it is until I grew older.👍
Each of those guys went beyond being the most skilled, but were so inventive and innovative. Always ahead of their time, you can see why they inspired so many musicians who appreciated them.
Rush songs sound different from each other but always have that distinctive Rush sound. 😁
Hopeful nostalgia sums it up. All of Rush's best tracks are in that weird mix of emotions
Eddie Van Halen In a magazine interview, said when he was asked, "how does it feel to be the greatest guitar player ever?", He said, "I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson".
+1
I have to find that to verify the time period. If I were to guess, it was when Ray Danniels was managing VH around 1994, and I suspect it may have meant to be more of a dig at him(Ray)because of his loyalty to Rush over VH.🤷♂️🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🎸
Alex is more of a innovator and originator than a imitator. He blends a perfection of technical skill, meaning yes he plays songs perfectly as they should be or were recorded, and the selection of perfect notes, chords, tones, effects, soul and emotion that some but few others can or do.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🎹🥁🎤
We’ll said …exactly, nailed IT
Alex is an in the moment player. Not sounding to planned out
Ramble on it's all good. Love your channel. Rush is my favorite rock band. I love how they push themselves to be better than the last album.
Alex's style is intentional it breaks him apart from sounding like the the factory soloist 🎸🎸🎸
I like when you ramble on - you could do twice as long and I would enjoy it twice as much
Love this band!!!
Like the comment below, their songs are all so different, but you always know it’s RUSH! Just master musicians!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
In January’s issue of Guitar World Magazine, Alex was ranked in the top 10 (#8) of the best guitar players of all time. While that’s impressive, to me he’s ranked even higher ✌️
🎸🐐
Great to have you back. I glad you're getting to enjoy time with your dad. After "Moving Picture" the norm would have been to make a similar album. But the line in the last song on "Moving Pictures" which is "Vital Signs" says "Everybody's got to deviate from the norm." Which is what they did with Signals.
Never stop never give up🤘keep reviewing… RUSH FOREVER!
Appreciate your comments about Alex. I think a good example is John Petrucci, he is incredible and a huge Rush fan but when he plays Alex's riffs you can hear exactly what you are saying. Check out the Dream Theater version of Xanadu on the AFTK anniversary edition. Another good example is Steve Morse playing LaVilla on the Working Man Tribute. Keep up the great reactions!
I've been studying Alex's work for 40 years. I can say this solo is choppy intentionally, because it's a song about an impatient, dreaming kid that's frustrated and eager. The solo is a perfect example of that, a bit stumbly (compared to say, Spirit of Radio intro that's controlled). In particular, the most important point is the end of the solo is a forced tremolo up AND down quickly, as if the hero of the song is demanding control in both directions, not allowing the springs to release the vibrato; it's forced by-hand. It's also a great duality counterpoint of wanting to stay happy at home, or leave and explore the world. Anxious, frustrated, dreaming, and a young male in-general. Alex does this "Frustrated" guitar solo in Neurotica and Emotion Detector as well. There's a little prototype version of "Frustrated" guitar solo in the song "A Farewell to Kings"; choppy and frustrated-sounding. I believe it's intentional.
Nice to see you back. FYI: Losing It (one of my favorite Rush songs) reactions seem to get blocked, which would be a shame. Here's a suggestion if you haven't already recorded it: give a countdown (1-2-3-play) before starting the music. That way when it gets blocked (and it most likely will) you can re-upload with the song audio muted and we can play the music ourselves (synchronized to the reaction thanks to the countdown) to follow along to the reaction.
🎸🥁🎸
🎸🐐
Your absolutely right, in my view he has a Jimmy page feel, it's not mathematical and it shouldn't be. As a guitarist you eventually find your soul, the likes of bb King
Those were accidental strike throughs!🤦🏻♂️🤣😂
Don't forget this track is 40 years old. That riff isn't that hard to play. At open jams, I usually play an A chord to check my tuning, and then the Analog Kid riff. Then Rush fans smile
Alex solos usually fit so well that I would like them to be longer, but I also think it is good to leave people wanting more. Someone mentions Mark Knopfler and to me he's a master at leaving room in his music or just hinting at things and then leaving you to figure the rest out. Nostalgia, pondering or musing music?
Great Job, however Rush is ALWAYS best served LIVE!!!
Really, you need to read the lyrics.
Thanks! I always try to watch the second part of your reactions, if I don't....know that I want to, cheers!
