the thing is, there are people who absolutely toured with the POD X3 Live for example back in the day, and the quality of the amp models and effects in this are easily better. We arrived at the point some years ago where cheap modelers are good.

Vielen dank, boys, a fair review. I got this in the covid boredom but didn’t really appreciate it until my guitarist got one - he raved about the VFm, ease of use and the sounds and he even uses it for guitar at practices now and then. The fact he normally uses a Line6 Helix but was still raving about this pedal made me sit up and pay more attention to what it can do. It’s not faultless, but it’s light/cheap and can easily get put through the PA for those gigs when you just want to get on public transport with just your bass.

Just recently got the one without expression pedal, as I wanted a smaller and lighter pedal for practice. And that is a really nice practice tool! Output works well through the output. The only real disappointment is an absence of UNDO feature on the looper, which make is incomplete and not as good to use. Also, you can power it up with 5v micro USB cable.

I got this last year and returned it the next day! First Zoom product I didn't like! Too many similar sounds, (more than usual, I felt). I have the B1xON which I use for busking and it's great! In direct competition to the B1on which is the predecessor to the B1x, I always would prefer the B1on. The sounds are much warmer and some of the better ones are not included in the B1x. Both have the biggest disadvantage in handling and recalling presets which is not intuitive and takes a lot of time in a live performance. Both have no dedicated bypass knob, you need to press both pedals to bypass - an absolute no-go. A solution could be to have 2 or more instances.

However it's got some good effects and I've found that if I have a bypass pedal before it I can preselect my chosen effect for the song on the zoom then when I need it just engage it using the bypass pedal.

I have the B1 Four and the guitar version G1 Four, without expression pedal. Headphones work fine on the output jack, nothing to complain about. Shure, these devices don't sound like an Axe FX or Helix... but for the money they are great little gadgets and pack a lot of fun. I mainly use them as pratice tools with a focus on the amp and cab sims. Important to know for the G1 Four: you have to switch on the cab sims in the presets (in the B1 Four they are already switched on). Some of the presets aren't the best with the factory settings, you need to fiddle around a bit to make them sound good.
These pedals could be powered by 4 AA batteries, 9V power supply (center negative) and even by USB (powerbank). Amp and cab sims, effects, drum tracks, aux in, looper and tuner - all I need.

My guess is it would be easier if we can change something in the firmware. But the above works.

Long been a fan of the sound of the Zoom pedals. I have a B3N glued to my board! They sound a lot better and more realistic than most other bass multiFX, IMO.
The problem for me is their usability in a rig, as the hardware and firmware is always crippled in some way. E.g. why are some of them not midi-controllable? This makes it hard to run units together. Why are others limited in the number of simultaneous FX models (or why is there not a model with more memory)? Why not allow parallel chains? Why did the B3N remove some of the awesome models from the original B3? Why is the desktop editing software for the B3 no longer supported? Why did the B3n remove bypass mixing from many of the models? Why do the equivalent guitar units have higher specs? I know, they're budget pedals... but it's frustrating because they don't sound like budget anything!

Cool pedal, but I am really impressed with the idea of sticking a pick dispenser directly on my bass. (I will NOT do that.)

I had owned a zoom b2.1u, and it was definitely something for a beginner in effects, and it was only a year or so of me playing bass. But after watching this and Patrick Hunter review the other 4 aka without the expression pedal, the overdrives and distortions still sound crappy and artificial, just don't get any clipping or subtlety like with the drive, but the other effects are great, I used to love messing with the pitch shifter and the tap delay was nice, but again it's a good beginner rig, like donner, caline or even berhinger, it's something cheaper to start out on
