I picked up a zoom multieffect unit because I have no idea what I want. Obviously this comes with a few trade offs and short comings. I now know what I want to sound like and what capabilities I want available.
Excellent video. I’m working on rebuilding my pedal setup, and the HX Stomp has been my centrepiece idea, with a drive, a compressor, and an OC-2 as my only analog pedals. Hearing how people have been using the thing since it came out is giving me confidence in my plans with it. So, thank you!
As a guitarist, I use a multi FX for modulation effects, amps, cab irs, reverb, delay, and looper. And I use stomboxes for compressor and overdrive pedals.
For use at home or in rehersal room i prefer simple pedals because i have easy access to all controls without messing around in menus and sub-menus. But for travelling on tour and playing the same tracks every evening a midi-controlled multi-fx is certainly cheaper and easier when all the necessary sounds are set up in these menus.
I needed a little “push” to direct me to the HX Stomp. Looks like I’m headed that way now. Many thanks! As a Line 6 user on guitar but not yet on bass, it seems like using the HX for bass is very smart way to simplify and expand at the same time. 👍
I switched to individual pedals about 6-7 years ago. The main motivation was more direct control when playing live, which I was doing a lot at the time. No venue or system ever sounds the same, and having things like simple EQ and reverb controls at hand just makes for a much better gigging experience. But aside from that, the bulk, cost, and potential power issues with individual pedal boards are all negatives. I believe that multi-effects are the best starting point for most setups. The quality of these latest generation MFX units puts them on par with many high end single effects, at a much better price point. Another plus for HX Stomp is that you can use it as an audio interface, potentially eliminating one more piece of gear to drag along on the road.
Prior to moving to Costa Rica almost 4 years ago, I sold all of my pedals and bought an HX Effects. It was a decent unit and I used it in many variations. It lasted 3 years before it glitched itself to death. I opted to go with some pedals this last Christmas. Walrus, Earthquaker, Wren and Cuff, TC Jauring overall. Much happier with the performance and tones.
Great video! The HX Stomp is a must-have pedal in my opinion - the versatility of it makes it useful for just about any setup. I use it as an interface, headphones rig, pedalboard, backup amp, outboard effect, standalone drone/noise machine, and an all-in-one live direct guitar rig. Decided to limit myself to the effects contained in it so that I learn to master all of the sounds possible, and I still find interesting new sound design ideas available all the time. Snapshots are also an incredibly powerful feature that allow you to do things that traditional stomp boxes can only dream of

Hi Janek, I've been following your channel since day 0 and I can only imagine how much work went into this video, it's great to watch and is super inspiring. Also, given how popular Stomp is, sharing some preset from time to time (even in a form of like regular segment) seems like amazing idea to attract new viewers, engage existing ones, and have another differentiator from other channels.
I live just south of London and occasionally have a corporate party band gig where we're playing a maybe 50-60 songs ranging from the 50s till now and I'm limited to what I can carry on to a cramped train. A tuner, my Tone Hammer DI and the HX Stomp plus maybe an OC-2 or another wild card pedal on a Pedal Train Nano plus a 5 String Jazz Bass can pretty much cover all of the tone I need! That, and the fact that it's great for recording and practicing, has made the HX Stomp probably one of the most useful things the modern bassist can own.
Hey man! Just wanted to do my part and leave something in the comments. I became a fan around the daily vlog era and am always happy to see stuff from you. Good luck on reaching your sub goal and I hope you have a great day!
Great video. I love pedals, and still use a few on my board. But I took the HX plunge. It's just so convenient to have all of those options in one box. Works great with the pedals I still use. I also love that if I'm going to be playing a smaller tighter stage, I can get 90% of my full setup in 2-3 total pedals (including the HX).
multi FX wins of course. so convenient to carry, to pre-set patches. no buffers needed, cheaper, lighter, multiple options, combinations and stereo output.. DI,MIDI,etc.. i understand people still stuck in the past but multieffects is the future..
I'm poor so I went with an MS60B+ and a mix inexpensive dedicated pedals. It probably cost in the same ballpark or more than the HX Stomp but I built it over time. I've had some of my pedals for decades! I think I got my Boss BF-2 in the late 80's! It's been a journey.
I wasn't an effect guy. But, when i started to improve my sound and playing, i got some stomp pedals. Recently i bought a zoom b1on and i use both: analog and digital. Analog for tuner, compressor and eq, and digital for amp modeling. I'm very happy with the results and size of the pedalboar. I'm quite simple i must admit. Very cool video!
Love this, especially since my guitarist friend told me to buy an HX Stomp. As a bassist, I’ve never really messed around with effects. I’m in love with this complex machine of the HX Stomp. Thanks for the video Janek!
Hi Janek, I saw you at Bix in Stuttgart, Germany in February 2020 with Bob Reynolds, just before the pandemic really hit. I approached you after the show and you were nice enough to chat a bit with me, even though you must have been extremely jetlagged. Thanks again for that, and I hope you play again there some time. Thanks for the insight into your pedal board. Being a bit of a pedal nut myself, I at some point switched to using Source Audio pedals almost exclusively. The MIDI control turns the board basically into one big multi effects unit. Good luck for the 100 K goal!
As a guitarist into multiple genres from metal to ambient, I love the Fractal FM3 or FM9. I still use tube amps but they are being replaced by ease of use and the fidelity of the Fractal Audio world. I have never done a comparison with the fractal versus a Boss octave pedal.
I had doubts about buying Line six stomp because here in Mexico it is too expensive, I'm also not a professional bass player so I thought it really was a completely innecessary tool for me, but watching this my mind is set. Thanks Janek!! I ve been in this channel for two years now, keep it up!!
After so many years I am also building a professional board finally! I For Modulation I will be using the GFI Synesthesia. Delay/Reverb will be the Source Audio Collider. Bass Octave will be the MXR M288 Deluxe. EQ will be the Boss GEQ Bass EQ. Compression will come from the Cali 76. Preamp will be the Radial Bassbone. Tuner is the TC Polytune Mini 3. Distortion/Fuzz Will be the Source Audio After Shock. Envelope/Filter will be the MXR M82 Bass Envelope. I will also have a Dunlop Cry Baby, I will be using a Effect Switcher/MIDI Controller called the Boss ES-5. I want to use a Beatbuddy drum machine or possibly a looper but I have not decided which would be best. I am going to have five presets and I need some advice to help me get the right combinations. I play a lot of Motown, Rock, Gospel, funk (slap bass), Jazz and some country. I need to know where to use the compression, distortion, fuzz, to get the sounds I want. I guess I will have to keep one of the presets for some kind of clean sound. Here is a list of some of the artist and sounds that I like. Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated! 1) Victor Wooten 2) Andrew Gouche 3) Jaco Pastorius 4) Verdine White I have several Basses to choose from. 1) Fodera MG Imperial Elite 2) Fodera Standard 3) Fender Jazz (Passive)
Nice video! I have the HX Stomp XL and really like it. I haven’t got the delays to react like my analog Diamond Memory Lane 2. But it’s close enough with an expression pedal on the feedback and a Saturnworks 10k pot dial controlling time. I love the idea of traveling with minimal gear. Just got a Nanuk 935 for a small pedal board AND my clothes and toiletries. We’ve been flying to a lot of one off shows these days.
I changed my setup several times and I have some multifx and some single pedals too. I like to use multi FX for eq,modulations, reverbs and delays...but for preamp and overdrives I go all analog. It's all about experimenting and finding that works for you.
I've actually been using an almost identical patch live with my band. In between songs I have the oscillator playing the opening chord of the next song in the set with a step filter and big reverb over the top while the whole band retunes into any alternate tunings. Didn't know anyone else had done this!
oh that's awesome to hear! Yes, it seems like a little known function of the unit, and you are the first person I've heard of doing something like that.
Hi Janek great subject. The power of individual pedals is in there simplicity and physical controls. If you set up 10 pedals you probably have 30-40 discreet controls (Inc on/off). Fast easy intuitive. Add in some parallel patching and a feedback loop to the start of the chain. Powerful and highly flexible. Multi FX are amazing but require more brain power to operate and can lead to a nasty case of option paralysis. Of course I am an amateur musician and don't have consider travel and many gigs 👍🤘😃😎
Your secret setting reminds me of the new Boss SL-2 Slicer. I commend you for showing us your set up and allowing us to understand your process. I would be way too stressed to breakdown pedals every gig and for having to trouble shoot on the fly. But I assume your mastery of you pedals is the reason why you took this path. Much respect to you sir and I wish you much success.
I've never been much into pedals other than an EQ and an envelope filter. A few months ago I purchased a zoom B6, as an intent to learn and try different effects, but still there isnt much I appreciate about them yet. I've never listened to much music with heavily processed bass signal though. Thanks for the videos, great content
I learned to love both. Mutlieffects are awesome for adding room, delays, modulation, but not great for distortion, compression or octave. I use an old zoom B3 combined with few mxr analog pedals and it blends just right!
I started with a Zoom 708ii bass multi effects, which I still have. Loved that pedal and was the perfect start into effects. I've now got into individual effects, which sound awesome, but I do still long for the days when I had everything in one unit!
hi there, no question just to wish you all the best on your growth! the content has been really good lately, at least as good as a... cough... sbl, and hope that algo stops being such a prude soon! loving your work!
Thank you Janek, that was very insightful. I got an HX Stomp XL within the last year and am slowly learning how to use it. I am coming from the same place as you, going from individual pedals to a "hybrid" setup. The Stomp is an incredibly powerful device and I am looking forward to discovering all the great stuff it has to offer! And, thank you for the preset, that looks like it'll be a blast! As always, keep up the top notch work. You are a true inspiration and motivation. Oh, do you play much fretless these days. I've been punishing myself with fretless for the last couple of years: trying to use it exclusively during my practice time. It's an ass kicker, but, I love it!
im have a bunch of pedals but i dunno what order to place them in, specialy where to put the Multi FX pedal in the chain (zoom b1xfour) aswell as the EQ pedal, at the moment the other pedals are BASS>tuner>compressor/sustainer>Dist>Chorus>Echo>bass bdi21> Limiter/enhancer>AMP
Another amazing video Janek! I think I've watched over 100 hours of RUclips videos over the span of 15 years trying to dial in the right pedal board set up for me. I honestly didn't think there was much more for me to learn on this topic. But your video was super informative and inspiring. Plus, I get so excited every time I see a pedal on one of your boards that I also use. I don't know why that makes me so happy, but it does. Good luck in your goal to reach 100k subs. Can't wait until you reach a million!
I think a lot of people have the wrong mindset when approaching a multi fx. For me it's not about "can it emulate this specific pedal perfectly?". It's about "what can this pedal do and how can I use those sounds?". For example, the bass octave in the legacy pitch folder. Does it sound exactly like an Oc2? No. But does it have its own sound with its own useful features? YES! The tone control on it is incredibly useful when running into other effects, and it's for that reason that I find myself using it all the time. If I want an Oc2 sound, I'll use my mxr vintage octave, but if I just want a generic analog style octave with a versatile tone control, I'll use the hx stomp. And the same goes for so many other effects in that unit and other multi fx too. Treat it like its own thing like you would with any other stand alone pedal and you won't be disappointed!
Of course single stompboxes will give you more flexibility. It's great for recording. Multi effects shine on the road if you use a lot of effects. It's SO MUCH EASIER to carry around, less logistics an all. It's also easier to switch between 2 different types of sound. Single pedals would need a rack system with a MIDI controller to give you the sams flexibility.
Thanks for the video. It got my like just for looking into topic I don't see addressed well very often. I love my old Boss GT3 to create sounds for electric and octave and boost pedals for my acoustic stuff. It's always a work in progress. Happy music making.
Great production Janek! Another vote for HX Stomp here. Tried multi-effects for years and sold them all, HX Stomp is not coming off my board. The sound is great live or in my studio and the endless sound design is amazing. Having any EQ I want on a gig is so helpful. Whatever backline I'm in, a high pass filter tunes the cab(s) to the room and the musical situation. Still like to spin my compressor knobs in the input and the dirt pedal is in the efffects loop. Thank you for the fantastic new preset to use with your looping book exercises 👍🏼
Hey Janek, thanks as always for sharing your experience &hope you are gradually getting more shut eye. 1)have you tried the Eventide h90 yet? 2)would pedal board powering options warrant enough Interest for a deep dive? 3)you know you want to dip your toe into eurorack 😂 4)OC2 4the win 5)how many subs to make you a coffee drinker??? Bonus point: you mentioned changing pedal board order while they are all slapped on the floor; there are some compact patchbay options such as the patchulator that can allow you to leave the layout fixed but adjust the signal flow in one location.
Haven’t tried the H90 yet, looking forward to it. Power options might be good for my new clips channel, I’ll keep it in mind. Eurorack is going to have to wait a while… 🥵 Might have to go 250k for a cup of coffee…?
Love this video! I order my first handmade bass and don't have any pedals yet. I probably going to get the line6 hx and some other interesting pedals you mentioned. hope I can see you in Toronto
Hey Janek! Amazing content. I have really enjoyed these most recent videos (this one and the one where about your signature instruments) where you go through a specific aspect of your career and how it has developed over the years. I would love to see more of this, maybe even about how parts of your playing or approach to specific songs have changed over time. Your insight is always valuable. Cheers!
Appreciate you taking the time to check it out. Storying telling is definitely something I want to get better at in my film making, and I look forward to exploring other parts of my development as a musician over the years and sharing them here.
I actually talk about that quite a bit on my podcast. Here’s and episode from last month: ruclips.net/video/qfLj3ctgfLw/видео.html And I’ve started a new podcast channel, so make sure to subscribe for new episodes: youtube.com/@janekgwizdalapodcast8028
Thank you for the preset. The use of this seems to be more common by guitarists example John Cordy and his pad presets, he also mentions you as innovative player to look at. How does the HX Stomp hold up as an amp replacement. A video of can I gig on just a Stomp direct great video. Thank you on making such fantastic content. And wishing you much success on hitting the mark of 1 million.
I've use the stomp XL as my only "pedal" on a tour, but I was playing through amps every night. I really don't like using amp modelers, or cab sim. There's something so forced and unnatural about it to my ear, that I'd rather just rely on the natural sound of my bass and my fingers, and go direct if there was no amp.
@@janekgwizdala Have the new cabs in the HX or a it of your own been able to get close? Have you produced IRs of your favorite cabs another product? But most of all thank you for the reply and your content!
Dear Janek, thanks a lot for this very valuable content. What I would like to tell at this point is not entirely related to this content but I think it is quite important. I remember reading in one of your newsletter entries that you are planning to or are actually working on a biography; telling your life story and (presumably sharing the way in which your thinking, perception and values evolved as an artist). May I ask whether this book project is actually on? I think one of the reasons why people follow you is your permanent ability to recreate your motivation and always move forward. This is a rare quality many people admire; and it is relevant in many domains of life beyond music. I think reading your biography would give people more clues as to where to find and how to nourish this stimulation. Although you are extremely busy, I would at least like to mention that it will be a great pleasure to read a book about your life and philosophy of life....thanks once again for all the content, and your music...
Hi Janek! Drummer here, so I just wanted to comment and applaud your video editing skills. They have certainly risen to meet the challenge of the 100K subs goal you've set and it shows! The scene transitions, background music, photo/video snippets when you reference past events, it all goes to create a story that is engaging to watch and relevant to the content you cover. I have no doubt that your audience is benefitting from the hard work that we don't see happening behind the scenes. The final product is (as always) uniquely Janek and very much appreciated! See you in Bellingham :)
Janek! You’ve really stepped up your game with your content lately & it’s awesome! What a world we live in when one of the most talented musicians in his field CHOOSES to engage with his fans / followers! I’ve been a subscriber for a long time, both to the RUclips channel and to your podcast(s) via Spotify. Here’s my question: what else can I do as a fan / follower / supporter to help you reach your goal? I know you’ve mentioned substack, but I don’t even know what that is…lol Thank you for including us all in the discussion & keep up the great work with the content! - Sean
Appreciate the kind words and all the support. Substack had been a really fun place to write and share more long-form information: janekgwizdala.substack.com It’s basically just my newsletter that goes out to the mailing list whenever I post, and I’m able to host the podcast, mailing list, audio clips, and videos with everyone. Without the nonsense of social media . It’s free to subscribe, and there is a paid option. I’m new to it, but it’s been a great move away from social media and into true fan engagement.

Love the new video / podcast recent format. Question: What glasses are you wearing now? Can you tell me the 3 numbers that give the size please, they should be on one of the arms like 53-22-140? Thank you..
I just stumbled upon the tone generator recently and I'm so happy try what you've built with it. I've been experimenting a bunch with it and it's become rather useful! I'm also using the HX Stomp, and recently paired down to a 5-pedal board, replacing about 5 other units along with a 2-button expression switch. For travel dates, it's been a god send! Great content, as always! Cheers!
Amazing video. Thanks! I love your content. On 4:57 it seems that you tried HX Stomp + Es 5. How did you route them? I am currently thinking of having the HX in one of the snd/rtn of the Es5, so I can move it around in the pedal chain. Cheers from Japan
Does the compressor on a multi-effect pedal actually compress your signal or just recreate what a compressor sounds like? Is it an actual fully working compressor?
Cool video. Interested to see how you meld older analog pedals with newer digital pedals. Is there volume or level issues. I'd like to add a multi for modulation type effects at the end of a fairly traditional analog board.
There can be gain structure issues on all kinds of boards, and especially when you mix old and new gear. One thing I love about the stomp is that all the input and output gains are adjustable on every preset. There's really no need to have any discrepancy between pedals and multi-fx anymore, IF you're willing to spend the time to tweak it.
You're killing it with these new vids!

Wow! your videos quality really improved lately, big props
1) Victor Wooten
2) Andrew Gouche
3) Jaco Pastorius
4) Verdine White
I have several Basses to choose from.
1) Fodera MG Imperial Elite
2) Fodera Standard
3) Fender Jazz (Passive)
Thank you so much for this video Janek! I've been thinking of incorporating the HX Stomp into my board.
I'll use whatever puts me in a room with Mike Stern
Been considering getting an HX Stomp in the last few days and this video has been omega eye-opening :) ty Janek.
The Slicer can definitely get into sequencer territory, but you have to provide the note. Very cool pedal though!
Great video Janek. I have tried a lot of high and end and cheap analog pedals, and with my quad cortex you can get 99% of the way there.
Rock on! One more subscriber on your way to 100k here. I love pedals and got a lot of this video.
Thanks alot for your Helix Patch.Greetings from Germany
I'd love to hear how you compared the individual pedals with the hx stomp and why you chose the ones you did over the stomp.
Great content and information, I always learn something new in your vids... Thank you!
Thanks Janek, I hope you meet your goals!
Nice tip with the hx stomp Janek, kudos
Such a wide verity of videos. I'm learning a lot. Thanks for sharing
Nice production level and editing. I'm commited too, to the 100k goal, liking, commenting and all the good stuff. Saludos desde Uruguay
¡Gracias! I hope I can bring the band to Uruguay in August when I'm on tour in South America!
@@janekgwizdala that would be amazing!
I don’t play much fretless at all… it’s fun, but I generally only do it when I have to
im have a bunch of pedals but i dunno what order to place them in, specialy where to put the Multi FX pedal in the chain (zoom b1xfour) aswell as the EQ pedal, at the moment the other pedals are BASS>tuner>compressor/sustainer>Dist>Chorus>Echo>bass bdi21> Limiter/enhancer>AMP
Great video, uber pro! Every time I see you and pedals, I want to get more!! that HX stomp thing is wayyyyyyyyy cool. Now I want one :) Thanks J.
Outstanding production levels Janek! Lets go!
To 100k, and onwards to a MILLION! 👍
Great video Janek!
Man, great channel. Nice editing and content!
Congratulations!
Hey Janek, thanks as always for sharing your experience &hope you are gradually getting more shut eye.
1)have you tried the Eventide h90 yet?
2)would pedal board powering options warrant enough Interest for a deep dive?
3)you know you want to dip your toe into eurorack 😂
4)OC2 4the win
5)how many subs to make you a coffee drinker???
Bonus point: you mentioned changing pedal board order while they are all slapped on the floor; there are some compact patchbay options such as the patchulator that can allow you to leave the layout fixed but adjust the signal flow in one location.
Haven’t tried the H90 yet, looking forward to it.
Power options might be good for my new clips channel, I’ll keep it in mind.
Eurorack is going to have to wait a while… 🥵
Might have to go 250k for a cup of coffee…?
so good! video editing on another level. production quality wow. subscribed.
Love my HX stomp…. Steep learning curve (for me) but i love one box doing 90% of what I need.
Love this video! I order my first handmade bass and don't have any pedals yet. I probably going to get the line6 hx and some other interesting pedals you mentioned. hope I can see you in Toronto
Nice video and well explained. Now up to 100K!
oh the suspense! Loved the intro...
Thanks for all your effort, greetings from Colombia 🟨🟦🟥
Great job Janek! Would be nice to see a video about touring and how to maintain your health doing that. What are the pros and cons etc.
I actually talk about that quite a bit on my podcast. Here’s and episode from last month: ruclips.net/video/qfLj3ctgfLw/видео.html
And I’ve started a new podcast channel, so make sure to subscribe for new episodes: youtube.com/@janekgwizdalapodcast8028
Great job on all of these new vids, Janek!! :)
Great video! Lots of fine details in this one 🙌 Keep up the great work
Appreciate the kind words, and yes! Bellingham! Can't wait.
Kudos on way stepping up your video production. Very polished and engaging.
Stomp XL user here. Absolutely great unit.
💪
You always make me want to add the HX stomp to the pedalboard rig my man!
DO it! 😈
Great upload Janek
Another fantastic video…and timely for me! I am building a micro pedal board and am thinking of pairing it with the H9. Thanks for the inspiration!
Small boards are so much fun, and the biggest challenge!
Absolutely love this. Thanks!
I know you’ve mentioned substack, but I don’t even know what that is…lol
Thank you for including us all in the discussion & keep up the great work with the content!
- Sean
Appreciate the kind words and all the support. Substack had been a really fun place to write and share more long-form information: janekgwizdala.substack.com
It’s basically just my newsletter that goes out to the mailing list whenever I post, and I’m able to host the podcast, mailing list, audio clips, and videos with everyone. Without the nonsense of social media . It’s free to subscribe, and there is a paid option. I’m new to it, but it’s been a great move away from social media and into true fan engagement.
Let's see those 100k
You should check out the mooer prime p1. Looks like an amazing practice/backup rig and I'd love to hear your opinion on it as you are very experienced on the matter.
Great information, thank you!
Cheers!
so great was this!!!!
for me it depends what you use either guitar pedals or multi fx the important is you know what your tone
Pedal?? I struggle just buying strings!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Does the compressor on a multi-effect pedal actually compress your signal or just recreate what a compressor sounds like? Is it an actual fully working compressor?
What a bad ass. Just dropping jono Mayer in there like no big deal. Then secretly plugging Benny greb.
I love that A38 concert vid 🤩
In the cost of living especially in 2024, is the cost purely the cost. I used Bias FX 2 it's all in one since I don't have that kind of money.
