Please do this weekly. It is the most genuine form of discussion. The fact Scott didn't like the "gear of the week" is great for discussion. Also the blind hearing test was brilliant. You should do that with different effects, maybe not weekly but monthly or bi-weekly. Have a good one, cheers!

I've got to say I dip in to the channel every so often , this is by far my favourite thing I've seen on the youtube channel. This was a good move. I like the diversity of topics in this format.
To Scott saying he'd quite like something more like an MX stomp but with more knobs & less menu diving. I have one that's got 84 different models in it lots of knobs and separate footswitches AND you can pick one up , used, for about the same price as a single modern day pedal! It's .... The line 6 M13! It really is a half way point between individual pedals and MX stomp world, which isn't a surprise given its place in the timeline of Line 6 development. It's saved me a fortune in individual pedals. You should try one, with the absolute confidence that if you don't get on with it you can sell it for the same price you bought it, nothing really to lose but the postage cost.

  • @eskilseter
    @eskilseter 11 месяцев назад +8

27:00 Scott: What you want is the HX Effects. More switches, same effects as the HX Stomp (just no amp modeling), and the editing is much more like editing on individual pedals. Just touch the switch that controls the "pedal" you want to edit, and now you can adjust its settings using the knobs on the unit. No menu diving required, and Ian can help you with presets since it's still an HX unit.

I started out on the regular guitar, and recently just got a bass. The thing I love about it so far is that it feels more plug and play. No need for all the effects to play certain genres or obsessing over getting that perfect tone.
I just switch on the amp and the clean tone works in just about every situation

I'm with Scott on the Multi-Effects. I can't stand having to scroll through the menus and stuff, I like to keep it simple. I had an HX Stomp for a while, but I ended up selling it. It was great to have because of all the options, but I spent more time on the floor messing with the settings than I did just playing. It did help me discover which effects I truly loved and needed on my board. Now I have 7 or so pedals on my board but it's simple and streamlined and works for me.

Very enjoyable video/podcast (and I don't usually watch 1h20+ YT content). I've been a pedal junkie for over 10 years, so particularly enjoyed the Octave Pedal Shootout. One point of constructive criticism: it would have much more enriching and easy to follow, if, when revealing which octaver was which in the sequence, a brief replay of the pedal in question was heard. It would add a minute or so to the overall duration, but would be worth it. Hoping you'll try this in future shootouts. Keep up the great work, guys.

Hey, Guys! Just want to say that I love every single bit of this. It is truly amazing! One thing I would love to see that may be just for me, lol, is that I would love to see a praise and worship bassist. I know that almost every genre is covered, and I have taken notes from all of it, but getting into the contemporary praise and worship area would be awesome for me. To be able to hear from an instructor that gets into what would serve a congregation by leading behind a bass, and how to fill different types of moments, and items like that would be an amazing thing to see in the SBL realm! I started playing about 12 years ago for church, and this is where I began. Thanks, yall!

I watched Scott's demo of a Darkglass distortion pedal, which cost $499. So I was interested and was shopping. My brother, who is also a bass player and uses pedals, recommended for me the ZOOM B6 multi-effect unit which has two Darkglass pedals integrated plus a ton of effects for $499. It works for me and you guys are making some great points on both sides of the choice. I am actually using an Ampeg Optocomp running into the ZOOM unit because the compression is always on for me.

Love the podcast, the longer format and having you guys just let loose and chat about whatever comes up is great. A few people I follow on here (unrelated to bass) keep their podcasts on separate channels because the RUclips algorithm apparently doesn't like the longer format videos so they end up getting less views. Can't hurt to try though, the podcast will keep its following whether it's here or elsewhere! I prefer audio only to listen when I'm driving or working, etc.

The blind test was awesome, gear talk kills me everytime (btw, an episode about iem and headphones would be super dope!), maybe something like a one time every month instagram questions answering would make it a bit more interactive. Gear of the week seemed a bit of, maybe something that I wouldn’t do on regular bases, maybe when something new and special gets released ore smth. The length was super dope, helps people really dig in. Looking forward to everything coming, gonna support everything.

This was great! I got an OC-5 for Xmas to replace my old/broken EBS Octabass, and have been very pleased with it. I have an HX Stomp and I know I'm only scratching the surface of what it can do, and I've watched lots of videos already on how to set it up, but I know Ian is a good teacher and he's definitely using the HX Stomp in a great way, so I'd love to see how he's set it all up and even learn the basics from him on the general configuration settings.

Really enjoyed the pedal shootout. I perceived that the OC derived pedals sounded similar enough to be a was, with the exception of the behringer which was hollow maybe due to the mids switch. The pearl surprised me, I liked that one. Not a fan of the HX octaver but I can see a place for it.

I've got a Boss ME-50B multi-effects board. It's nowhere near as versatile as modern modelling units like the HX Stomp but it has most stuff you're likely to need and you can program it sequentially for a set list if you want to. It's solidly made (aluminium I think). You can get them second hand for less than £100 so they're perfect if you want variety on a budget.
I initially got mine to experiment and see what individual pedals would be most useful to me but haven't needed to replace it.

  • @WilliamTrimble

I really liked this format, and feel it would translate to the audio only podcast very well.
You both have amazing insight into the instrument, entertain with incredible banter, and make it seem more like a candid conversation, rather than a planned topic filled session.
I am excited to hear that more playing will be included...it's what I come hoping for.
As far as the pedal vs. multi-fx...Icurrently use a Zoom b3n . I've always gravitated to the bass processors, starting 25ish years ago with the Digitech BP50... as for me they were always the better bang for my budget, and much like Ian said, it sounds good to me, which mattered most. I may not know what I'm missing sticking with the multi, but I've never had complaints about tone, and once I got used to the interface it became the perfect balance of stomp box, amp/cab modeling.
Again, this may be long winded, but I truly appreciate what the channel does, and look forward to how you continue to adapt and grow the brand.

I've gone down the octave rabbit hole. There are some out there I still want to try: the Korg/Yamaha oct-1, and that wild 6 knob Exar oc-04 octavium... Most octaves aim for that boss sound though. I think there's more room for octave experimentation in the pedal space.

The Broughton Synth Voice is one of my holy grail octave sounds and it’s specifically for the non-octave (unison pitch) synth sound. Bumping a bit of that up can take a bass line (especially in a pop or hip hop/ contemporary jazz context) and send it into extreme groove territory.

I haven’t tried all of those but I got the Foxrox Octron 3 (on Ian’s recommendation) and it is AMAZING. So simple, one knob for octave up level, one for direct level and one for octave down level, and a choice of two sounds on each of the octaves. Very analogue. The tone just works so well, much less synthy than an OC2 or POG.

After repeatedly attempting 3Leaf Audio’s roulette queue for the elusive Octavre (and failing) I stumbled across/purchased an Octron 3 earlier this year. Glad I did. Tracks as well or better than most analog units I’ve tried plus it sounds phenomenal. Sits in the mix nice and no more POG whistling digital artifacts.👍🎉

Scott, the Freeze is good but try this...
I have the EHX Super Ego. Run a trem through through the loop. Somethimes I add a Digitech Dirty Robot( or any synth pedal) into the loop. Even tried the Ravish Sitar. Very cool for sustain patches!

I use a Boss GT 10-B mainly as it is pretty easy to learn and operate... the sounds are good, and it has less noise than a chain of a lot of individual pedals. Can store 200 user made patches too. Does a lot of things well, with very little hassles, and overall cost is a fraction what a dozen different pedals costs. After having even a modest chain of individual pedals with all the power supplies and patch cables needed.. it was just a pain in the ass. The GT 10B is one power cable... 1 or 2 outputs to amps, plug in the bass...then just turn the power on. and away you go.

I spent about $1400 on my board that completely replaced my amp and FX rig. It's huge and heavy but I don't have to move it either. All discreet pedals including input buffer, volume pedal, pre-amp, boost, octave, chorus, drive, envelope filter, reverb/delay, Freeze (TY Scott), and post FX DI with cab sim all on a vintage Holeyboard Wide w/custom paint job.

I finally got to finish watching the entire podcast and I absolutely love it. The interaction between the two of you is genuine and you balance being entertaining with being educational.
Scott, you do need to go to a quality sushi restaurant with Ian and you need to try some high end toro (the belly meat of the bluefin tuna), with some sushi rice and real wasabi. I had a liver transplant 3 months ago and one of my only culinary regrets is that I can’t eat raw fish anymore.
The octave pedal death match was eye opening. My current favorite, the Aguilar Octamizer, would be another great one to try sometime.
The discussion on the business of session playing in the 21st century from the Question of the Week was incredibly useful. I’m an older guy (not that old, lol) coming back to the bass after finishing a separate career and the world has changed. I’m an analog guy adapting to the digital world.
Bottom line, keep doing this podcast, it’s a win!

I have the OG Discumbobulator, and I love it. Got it in a multi-pedal deal, and I keep an octave divider (the OG MXR) and a fuzz dedicated to it. My OC-2 is in a chain with a Brown Dog Gated Fuzz and the Source Audio Bass Envelope Generator Pro. I love the Source Audio pedal because you can program presets and EQ with it, so it kills multiple birds with one stone. And the Brown Dog is just sick. It can get very nasty, just perfect for driving a huge synth bass sound. But I like the big old Q-Tron Plus, too. That thing is PHAT.

First... I love you guys! And, I appreciate everything you do. I've been a pro recording bassist in Nashville for 35+ years. All I truly need on a day-to-day basis is a SansAmp Pre, an LA2A compressor, and an MXR Octaver. That's it. I just don't use any of those other effects. But, I truly dig ALL of the effects you guys use! (AND Janek Gwizdala!) Just because I don't need it, doesn't mean it's not cool AF. Both of you, keep doing YOU!! You are both Wonderful musicians and bassists! And, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you both!

    Loved this.
    New segment ideas:
1.Quickest to recreate a sound: Both choose a famous bass line (Dune Tune by Level 42 for example) and then both of you time or race each other to see who can recreate the sound quickest with the pedals/gear you have on hand.
2.Film a small portion, to play back during the next podcast, of something outside of the 'studio' environment. I would love to see Scott eat that raw tuna (it's really tasty Scott, you'll love it). I think it would be cool to have something as maybe a bonus feature at the end of each podcast where you play a fun/wholesome moment that took place outside of the 'studio' at the end of each podcast. Encourages people to hang out until the end of the podcast/video too.
Player of the week: Jeremy Pritchard, seriously underrated bass player.

Interesting discussion. I have to confess to being ambvalent about whether these podcasts appear in the main channel or the stand-alone channel, as I'll watch most of them either way. The only concern would be if being on the main channel made you more "serious" and cost some of the interaction and chemistry.
From the pedal perspective, I've been using stand-alones for a while and finally put together a small board a few months ago (it helps that some of them are usable for both bass and those funny 6-string things with a short scale-length). Apart from the mandatory tuner (Boss), I have a noise gate (necessary thanks to playing in a small rehearsal room with other noisy people; the bass was picking up the drums and the PA we use for vocals), a Darkglass distortion and MXR chorus. A wah sits next to the board. Everything except for the tuner goes int he effects loop just now. I own a decent compressor but I'm being lazy just now and using the on-board compressor in my bass amp (which is why I "break the rules" and run the distortion in the effects loop, as having it between the amp and the instrument means the on-board compressor "buries" the distortion). I've tried delay and reverb on the bass and have decent pedals for those but don't need them for our current set-list. I've also been known to use a Rat for distortion instead of the Darkglass, but the latter is more versatile and I can almost get the ratty sound with it . . .

Love the mojo all analog octave, envelope filters flanger and chorus. Even though it’s a bit of a hassle with the Velcro, faulty patch cables, knobs can get moved and certain pedals are on when you power them up.

Totally also went hunting/shopping/waiting for a good octive pedal. The review I would have to agree with Scott (but EVERYONE has a different ear) about is the 3Leaf. I've tried and tried to get one this year direct, but yes they sell out so damn quickly! (And the replies from Spencer on his website are frankly not needed).
That being said I went for an OC5 and it's alright for a beginner. Affordable, easy to get, and honestly can be used for many things and get used to using octive pedals.
Cheers and thanks for the video From the Pacific NW!
(Intetsted on your review of Envelope Filters, since...well, dang there are many of them).

Ditto. Just yesterday I got an OC-5, an immediately I was aping the Tear Your Playhouse Down. I used a hair more of the up octave to help with definition and it’s awesome. It appears that everyone quietly just wasn’t the Boss OC-2 sound, but are in denial, so they distract themselves from this fact by putting their time into considering alternatives. Kinda like the guy who gets a “version”of what they want or need, and beats around the bush and by the time e they acquire the actual thing, the magic might be gone. This is while considering affordability as a very strong influence in everyone’s perception of certain products. The OC-2 didn’t become iconic for nothing.

One suggestion for someone just starting with effect is a Zoom B1 four. No, it's no where near as good as an HX or other end multi effect unit. But it's relatively low cost, very simple to use and is a great practice tool (looper, small amount of drum patterns). You can play with each effect and vary the parameters to learn a bit about how that effect works. I'm sure the experienced pedal users will quickly point out all the things that could be much better. However, it's a decent place to start and there are a number of useable effects in it. Add in the ability to do short 30 seconds loops and play with drum patterns and it's a pretty versatile tool. I also used it as a front end for my audio interface device when I played online over Soundjack.

    • @caddelworth
      @caddelworth 10 месяцев назад

Totally agree with you: my top tip for a B1 Four is to use the ToneLib-Zoom editor on your PC to set up the Zoom. I did try Zoom's own editor but it didn't work on my PC, whereas the ToneLib editor (it's free BTW) works just great; and IMHO has a better UI than the official Zoom editor. If you own a B1 Four and haven't tried a PC editor, do it! No scrolling on tiny screens, can be adjusted while in use, etc., etc.

First of all love the podcast format. I really enjoy the discussion. Also, some boss pedals have rubber pads installed under the foot switch to dampen the click. So your old boss pedals aren't worn out, they just have rubber in there, check it out.

I use a zoom MS60B pedal - a small , relalively cheap multi-effx pedal - has all the cab and pedal simulations I'll ever need. I have my patches saved and that works for me - the only thing I miss and plan to add is an expression pedal and looper so the Zoom B6 looks like a good upgrade proposition
    I've enjoyed this podcast!
