  • Since emerging on the calypso scene in 1986 ,David Rudder has established himself one of the greatest calypso singers of all time.
He had been on the calypso scene for some time , as a backup singer and lead singer with the band Charlie's Roots , but 1986 was his year.
That year, he blasted onto the calypso scene like a rocket , winning all the available calypso honors, including Young Calypso King, Calypso Monarch , and the coveted Road march title.
Humble , intelligent and articulate , he is one of the few calypsonians who is also a composer , and his music reflects his social awareness, and concern for the planet and humanity.
From Dimanche Gras 1986, at the Queens Park Savannah , here is David Rudder and his winning performance of "Bahia Girl", which was also the Road March that year.

David Rudder is a true master. When it comes to originality in music. Both in Calypso & Soca. His singing is perfect and he always keep it simple. He had always sang about party tunes. But at the same time? He also backed it up with singing serious tunes with social commentary. That sends a serious message. Not even other calypsonians. Like Iwer George or Ronnie McIntosh come close to David Rudder's singing style. Iwer had a similar chant in the tune called "Look De Ting Dey". That sounded similar and close to Rudder's own Baptist Chant. This was 2 years later around in 1988. He came onto the soca scene in 1987 with "Boom Boom Time" and "Times Hard, Hold Tight". David Rudder & Tambu were the great 2 vocalists of Charlie's Roots from that era of the 80's.

Never forget. The largest final night score and margin of victory. The only pity is the tv microphones did not capture the stunning sound of the band/ drummers (police band were excused for his performances that night) and the fact that the entire savannah was singing the song along with him. Still chills.

He's right. I'm a Trinidadian and I was amazed when I looked at Brazilians dancing at carnival. They dance just like us. Sorry that Afro-Americans got disconected from their African heritage.

I resent that statement!! There are those of us who enjoy Kaiso. This is David Rudder's moment of glory. Remember, he took the crown 👑 & the Road March- a feat not seen since Mighty Sparrow's double win in 1956- 30 years prior....

No. Stalin win in ‘87. Rudder’s score and margin are still the record.
