- in one of the most exciting and hardest fought battle for kaiso supremacy, it boiled down to the last two calypsonians of the night...Black Stalin & Defending Calypso Monarch, David Rudder.
here is David Rudder's exhilerating performance of his hit "Calypso Music" at the 1987 Calypso Monarch Finals. This performance did in fact beat out Black Stalin's "Bun Dem", however he was edged out by Stalin (due to the 1st round performance) and had to settle for 2nd position. Rudder walked out arm in arm with Stalin when Stalin was announced Calypso Monarch. Talk about graciously accepting defeat. However this was his last ever appearance as a contestant in the Calypso Monarch Finals. He is and always will be a King in the eyes of trinis everywhere...

I will agree that his music is taking Calypso to a whole new level and he is constantly paving the road for up & comers & the youth...David Rudder gives EVERY Trinbagonian a sense of PRIDE...and if u listen to his IMMORTAL "Calypso Rising" he sings how d landscape of calypso is changing...it may sound different, but its still CALYPSO.

Rudder opening with Calypso Music and closing with Madness would have been an unbeatable combination. You could imagine Madness sung to an audience ready for mas.
I saw Rudder on my way back from Jouvert that morning at the corner of Carlos Street and asked him why he didn't sing Madness. He told me that his voice was in bad condition at the end of the season. Stalin was great but he would have had no chance against Calypso Music and Madness.

I LOVE Mr. Rudder!!! I miss his music. I miss him on the scene in general!! How did you get a hold of these footages?? It's amazing (old and ragged) but Amazing!! I was about 3 or 4 when this was playing on the tele . . . me and my Grandpa. Good memories indeed :-)

while I agree with you in terms of David Rudder's versatility, I disagree with you not calling him a Calypsonian...A Calypsonian is the mouthpeice of the people, defender of the downtrodden, a Prophet of sorts, Storyteller, and News Reporter...David Rudder fills all these roles while putting out 110% PURE KAISO. Eventhough his new music sounds different, dont fool yourself..it is still KAISO.
Couldn't "SOMEBODY" (who realises the Monumental HISTORIC Value of this rendition) - RE-Fresh / re-record ... "What-Ever" - (I am not Aux-Fait ... with these things), Similar to what was done with Nat King Cole's Timeless Classics???
Honestly...Rudder and Stalin should've tied fuh de crown in my opinion. They both had a powerful and massive performance.
Rudder should have sung Calypso Music first and closed the evening with Madness. That would have broken down the house. Stalin might not even have been able to perform after Madness. The crowd would have gone wild.
who ever you r bird without a brain maybe we not to long gained independance it was what we had and the lyrical content is beyond ur poetry mind that is not born yet.try this mental exercise listening!
