- David Rudder's riveting performance at Dimanche Gras 1986 was one for the ages, and definitely worthy of the title of Calypso Monarch that year.
His winning performance at Queens Park Savannah in Port of Spain was his tribute to the late"Hammer", Rudolph Charles , former leader of the Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, who had recently passed away.
The presentation begins in darkness and is not fully captured by the cameras, but brightens up later in the performance.
That switch over was so raw and so real big up d band i love my country
I always come listen to this from time to time! I think it’s an amazing heartfelt powerful performance!!!!
I saw Mr rudder at CHIN picnic in Toronto in 2012, talk about professional, articulate and humble, you are a living legend.WELL DONE.
The song/performance that cemented David Michael Rudder's place in Calypso history!!! The Hammer the Calypso Monarch tune of 1986, David's tribute to pan pioneer Rudolph Charles (1938-1985). "Ah Want to Know Where The Hammer Gone?" David Rudder did give a hint that Charlo had passed "From April of '85, Hammer went to sleep, after years of making noise, not even a peep".
The King in all his splendor and glory.

It is about Laventille, Trinidad, where steel pan is developed, arranged for, studied, respected and rejoiced. "The Hammer" is used to build, shape and tune the world's newest acoustic instrument.
