David was my carnival history in 1988. His music just takes me right back to then. Simpler times... My first and not last carnival

I would like to suggest another: "Pain nous ka mange", from a slave rebellion in the early 1800's. The song itself references the successful revolution on Haiti ("hey San Domingo") and is called by John Cowley "probably the earliest song that can be dated specifically in the history of Trinidadian music". It was collected in a book in the 1950s by Trinidadian origin musicologist and singer Edric Connor. I learned a four-part version by Stephen Taberner of the Spooky Men. I'm not sure a recording exists, but the song is beautiful - and menacing.

So I figured out that the Chinese man at the begging of the second verse was Johnny Ou Wai, and his "riding partner" was the then Minister of Finance Francis "Boysie" Prevatt. And I think the Canadian in verse 3 was Minister John O’Halloran, aka "Mr. 10%." O'Halloran earned that moniker as it was widely known that he skimmed 10% of the top of many deals involving the oil industry, construction, horse racing and even cockfighting. I think O'Halloran was the "big belly fella" that Stalin referenced in "Bun Dem," but I could be wrong. The man was an outright thief and almost got away with it but for the tenacity of the NAR government and Attorney General Selwyn Richardson. AG Richardson was able to sue and recover some $7 million from O'Halloran's son and the US/Canadian businesses that facilitated the corruption. $7 million is a lot, but god only know how much money Mr 10%, Boysie and Ou Wai stole from the public trust. I tell you as a child I had no idea the meaning behind the song. But now as an adult, I wish we had more courageous patriots like AG Richardson and his Prime Minister, ANR Robinson.
