This is one of the absolute all-time best things in the world. I was lucky enough to come across this music in the week before Carnival in Port of Spain, 1988 or 1989.
Myfan taught me how to play iron when I was 14 and was playing pan with Starlift. Loves this song. Ken Jones played for Starlift too. I was more blessed than I knew.
You could hear the Baptiste in David Rudder at the conclusion of this classic. History of Steel Pan (steel drum/oil drums). David Rudder drops some names of significance- Bobby Mohammed, Pelham Goddard (of Charlies Roots fame), Cory- the Iron Man from South (San Fernando). He even tells you the dangers of being a Pan Man- "Every pan man could tell you his in-laws were outlaws". Another classic composition to give you the history of Kaiso/ Pan would be The Mighty Sparrow's Outcast (1964)- "Calypsonians really ketch for a long time.... To associate yourself w/ them was a big crime."
