The problem, at least for me personally, is not that it doesn't focus as good as a Sony.
The problem is that AF-C + Tracking/Eye/Face on release was acceptable to the point that I completely switched to this way of shooting on my X-T5, until they ruined it with the latest update.
I've been using AF-S + Singlepoint recomposing for years and years on my older Fujis, getting a sharp image that way is absolutely possible. But in some situations (subjects moving towards you) it's more of a hustle than anything.
edit: I'm talking about professional use-cases, where I have to depend on the camera. For many of my private shots and for all street I mainly use my X-T2 with manual lenses.
old cameras used to say in menu that af performance was increased in boost mode.
They should all come standard in boost mode with that ability to activates a power save mode.
By the way I use eye and face detection all the time in my street photography and af-c
my custom af settings are set so that the camera is as responsive and quick to re focus as possibly can.
My hit rate are well above 85%
Ofen use af-c and eye detect for portraits to it helps to work around those small movements that the model or I might have especially when shooting with a narrow depth of field.
So far i didn't updated tonthe latest firmware. I'm always late on updates since I relay on the camera for my income.
I have to admit that sometimes I miss focus in AF-C mode with the Sigma 30mm lens. I get better results with AF-S, but sometimes the eyes still come out blurry. I've seen a huge improvement with the Sigma 16mm lens. It seems like the lens also makes a difference.
I have been using Fujifilm cameras and lenses for ten years. They have always been set on boost mode as Fujifilm experts/ambassadors advised.
I have the X-T5, X-T3 and X100V, they are all in boost mode, AF-S and smallest focus square. I rarely if ever miss a shot this way.

I have been shooting with fuji since the xe-1. Long before it was hyped like today. Fuji users knew/know what the camera was/is all about. It was never the AF, for videos or fast photography like with the DSLRs. It was about bringing back the feel of the old style photography. Thinking about what you are doing, composition, exposure and mostly having the wonderful fuji colors.
I still use my older fuji cameras and up to today they still give me the joy of photography. With manual focus lenses even more. It may not be perfect or pin-sharp but sharp and good enough. For me it’s about having fun… slowing down and try seeing things in a different way..

AF has nothing to do with full frame or APS-C. It’s just the Fuji implementation of their AF has not yet matched their competitors. It took Nikon Z system some time also to get to this current performance. Let’s hope that AF improves their performance in the next releases. I mean, even Panasonic’s MFT bodies now have great AF.
I don't think Fuji works for run and gun cameraman on events. The workflow is more deliberate and I like the intentionality

On my H2, AF is mediocre, when compared to a 12-yrs old DSLR. Struggles to find horizontal structures. Boost modes: refer to EVF behavior ; when we know never can compete with optical viewfinder!
Can I ask why you keep saying the AF will never be as good as a full frame camera . The R7 and a6700 aren't full frame and have good AF. This makes it seem like APS-C won't ever be as good as full frame .

R7 has problems with focus. It doesn't buy itself with the R8 which is much higher. Sony's A6700 is the leader in this category.
@@michelecintramika8482 I've seen an R50 has great AF . What kind of problems does it have because I've seen R6 and R5 also have focus issues. Not horrible but not perfect
@TwoTimesRmedia R10 and R50 have no problem. The R7 has a false focus. It's not bad. But it's not like R8. It must be the same as the R6 and R5 you mentioned.
"A great camera is not only about AF." So true! This is good information, Tudor. I never have been able to rely on Fuji for AF EXCEPT -- the XH2S. If you were to ever get a hold of this camera I think you might find different results. However, I use the Nikon Zf and the XH2S for event shooting. For street photography, I prefer my X-T30II and Panasonic GX9. I like "dreamy" pictures too!

Try to make a video in AFC focus mode and move towards and backwards with af locked to an object and you will see the af performance of XT5, it is terrible, all over the place. I have tested with 23, 33, 56, 16-55 all new lenses and with new firmware 3.01 with bunch of different af settings and it is not usable.
