Where do you base your assumptions that as a nation Finns are worse English-speakers than the Swedes or the Dutch? I can also guarantee that not nearly everyone speaks good English in Holland even though I've never been there cause that is just the reality. (How do you measure good English by the way?) What does Finland's suicide rate have to do with any of this? Also, saying Finland has NO sunlight just shows how ignorant you are. There would be no humans living in Finland if there was no sunlight at all, moreover, Finland has quite a lot more sunlight during the summertime than your dear Holland for example. All these stereotypes and assumptions you make about Finland sound the same as if I said that there are no cars in Holland cause they only use bicycles and they only use wooden shoes there or that thankfully in a couple decades the whole country will be flooded due to rising sea levels so thank god we'll get rid of that dreary people they call the Dutch. But I won't say that cause I'm not an ignorant asshole.
@Jack Penny Oh what rubbish. You just made a sweeping generalization of Finns as though they suck at English as a nation when your sample size is only 2.
And that's a pity because her other films are not as Oscar-friendly as that one, despite her always being superb. Adams may get snubbed but she'll always return to the race. Streep never gets snubbed, only over-nominated. But Swinton her, really, this is sad.
I'll never understand how she can have only one Oscar nomination. At least she won for this one. Great performance, although Blanchett and Ryan would have been deserving winners too.
It was a tough call to decide the winner to be honest. Every precursor award before the Oscars has given it to a different actress. Any of the 5 nominees could have won that year and I believe Tilda won by a very small margin that year.
Kevin Lopez I love her in Trainwreck, which is a comedic role, and she is also great in There's Something Wrong with Kevin....dark dark and darker still.
I just noticed the 4 actors that won an Oscar that year are all European: Tilda Swinton and Daniel Day Lewis (UK), Marion Cotillard (France) and Javier Bardem (Spain).
Alejandro Pérez Rodilla Yep! It's only the second time in Oscar history that that has happened. The first was in 1964. Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews won Leading Actor and actress and are both British. Supporting actor and actress went to Peter Ustinov (British) and Lila Kedrova (Russian)
something very similar has been happening since 2011 in the category best director: except for Damien Chazelle in 2017 all the winners have been from foreign countries so far: 2011 Tom Hooper (british) - 2012 Michel Hazanavicius (french) - 2013 Ang Lee (taiwanese) - 2014 Alfonso Cuaron (mexican) - 2015 Alejandro G. Iñarritu (mexican) - 2016 Alejandro G. Iñarritu (mexican) - 2017 Damien chazelle (american the only exception) - 2018 Guillermo Del Toro (mexican) - 2019 Alfonso Cuaron (mexican)... what a coincidence!
Adolfo Albornoz And if stars align, the next will be a Korean director. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is better than any of the upcoming 2019 Hollywood productions could even dream of.
Like others have pointed out in the comments, how the hell does a magnificent actress like her only have one Oscar nod? She has deserved at least two more for her brilliant turns in I Am Love and We Need to Talk About Kevin; the latter which contains what may be her very best performance ever.
+PalmurcioWorld Tilda is just utterly subline in Julia... possibly her best preformance, IMO! Should have been nominated and won the Best Actress Oscar for that!
SAM0091 I know! I agree it's her best performance, absolutely sublime. I can't understand how with performances like Julia, I am love, Only lovers left alive, Orlando or Only lovers left alive she only has one nomination. The closest she's been til she won the Oscar was for We need to talk about Kevin and she was snubbed that year. I hope this year with A bigger splash she gets more recognition, I feel she's still underrated even after winning an Oscar.
PalmurcioWorld I agree she is still massively underrated: I mean she should have been at least nominated for "Julia" and won Best Actress for it. She should have also been nominated for "I Am Love" (I mean, she speaks Italian in a Russian accent)... take note Cate Blanchett... for "We Need to Talk About Kevin", "Only Lovers Left Alive" and my personal favourite "Orlando". I love the film "Michael Clayton" and think Tilda did a great job, but I don't feel it's one of her best at all... Do you think she's often snubbed because a lot of the films that Tilda Swinton does are indie films!?!? - Another actress that I feel is underrated is Emily Watson... I mean only one Oscar nomination... so far!!!
Fun fact : Lucifer morningstar's face was inspired by David Bowie Lucifer's hair in his first appearance(The Sandman #4) inspired her hair as gabriel in constantine. She played as gabriel in constantine which has lucifer in(but different lucifer from the comic)
I'm so glad that one of the most fascinating actresses working today has an Oscar, yet for one of her most accessible turns. The whole lineup is amazing, all deserve their nomination, but this was Blanchett's Oscar, she's electrifying and capture the androgynous person that Dylan was in the 60's, then Swinton, in a performance as cold as Hannibal Lecter's mind, Ronan is magnetic in her screen time, Ryan gave everything into her character and Dee overshadow Washington in her scene. Great group Academy, congrats !!
+SAM0091 What I think is that you read the movie in a completely different way, there's a reason why I use the word androgynous, Im Not There is not a biopic about Bob Dylan per se, Haynes had the balls to turn upside down such a cliche genre and reinvented it. What Blanchett does is to capture the emotions, state of mind, confusion, creative process, perception of the media, stay true to your art, etc, etc that Bob Dylan went through at the time but is not Dylan who Blanchett is playing, is an androgynous entity to display all that I just wrote, it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman, is not what defines it, and Marcus Clark Franklin, Ben Wishaw and Richard Gere did the same, while Christian Bale and Heath Leadger went full on playing Bob Dylan, pretty basic, pretty straight forward, they don't evoke the film as the other performers, both are the weak link in an otherwise brillant film.
this lady is beyond this world. she is so pure and so talented and so beautiful and so cool and so amazing its hard to believe shes human! tilda rocks!!
So nice to see her win. The shock on her face was real. You can see she didn't expect it - at all. Her performance in Michael Clayton was perfect. No one could have done it better. Even Meryl Streep could have only done it differently, not better.
She always performed her character with stunning and amazing. She never failed me. I don't know why oscars always forget her. She must be at least get nomination for WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN as leading actres or supporting at SNOWPIERCER...
LOL 'Happy Birthday man' - this woman makes me die!! She's just brilliant in every way and I really admire her! I love her dry sense of humor, and the fact that beneath all that, there's a really nice, kind, caring person there. Plus, she's different, and not afraid to embrace that! I just love her!! :) :)
Would have voted for AMY RYAN myself but TILDA SWINTON is a very talented and unique character actress who really DID give her Oscar away to her agent. He still has it.
I had to watch "Michael Clayton" a couple of times to really get what was going on with Tilda's character. I had to really understand her and her intentions to protect her company. She grew on me, and after the 3rd time I watched, I think she deserved the Oscar. She played the part very well and the final scene she has with George Clooney in the film sealed it for her.
I just love her acceptance speech. So sincere and grateful. She essentially thanked everyone she should be thanking and not that kind of long, boring neverending speeches that have no point.
i mean, in terms of metamorphosis and fully changing yourself for a role, she is the master. i bet people in hollywood are jealous of her because it seems like she gets all the unique and fun roles. example: Crazy glasses lady in Snowpiercer, The Anicent One, Madame Blanc in Suspiria, The White Witch, Weird braces lady in Okja, Orlando etc etc. ps: Swinton also played the old man in Suspiria and the slug witch thing at the end. amazing
Saorsie ...or something like that...she is the next meryl...Ive been watching all these oscar winnings and she appears in like 5 of them! She for sure will win some day..maybe this year.
“Michael Clayton” was so excellent and an interesting deep dive into law firm and client culture and an interesting take on extremes that certain individuals will go to “win.” Tilda Swinton definitely deserved this award.
YAY for Tilda! What a great acceptance speech! I've liked her since I saw her in Orlando, way back when. She was also fantastic in The Chronicles of Narnia.
For all the controversy surrounding the Oscars right now, here, Tida Swinton in her speech covers what's it all about. Is all merely subjective ( my and everybody's opinion ) and she totally gets it right, one second Alan Arkin gave her the Oscar and the next one she's giving it to his agent, the clue is not to take it seriously, do your work and if somehow gets awards traction, it's just the tip of the iceberg, look at actors like Patricia Arquette who were attached to a project for so long just because she was in love with the project, what happened next was just a reaction. Tilda, for this and your art, you're one of my favourite people in the world. On the other hand, Viola Davis in her Emmy speech ( available here on RUclips ) address the roots of the problem, is about the industry who needs to think outside the box and be brave and do quality projects.
Tilda's comment about Oscar's butt resembling her agent's butt echos an infamous remark Bette Davis made when she won her first Oscar which of course has now become the stuff of legends!
Tilda Swinton has certainly been passed up for additional nominations; I know it doesn't bother her because she's not turned on by all that, but she consistently provides breathtaking performances. For those who have yet to see "Julia," watch it! It was kind of a new take on the original "Gloria" and Swinton is absolutely amazing in the film.
I thought she kicked ass in Constantine and the chronicles of Narnia :) You could tell she was genuinely amazed to win LOL! I honestly thought It'd be Ruby Dee but it was a pleasant surprise to see her win and I loved her speech.:)
I once saw her in a car and screamed Tilda from the sidewalk. They stopped the car, opened the window and she said Hi and waved and smiled. Then drove on!
This woman has been in so many movies with so many accolades and this was the first recognition of her work? Says little of the academy not only for Tilda but for all actors and actresses.
Thats so unbelievable and totally absurd that’s her only Oscar nomination to date. She should’ve also been nominated for Julia (and won), We Need to Talk about Kevin, Snowpiercer.
Tilda Swinton steals every scene in every film she has ever been in you can not take your eyes off her. even when she has a bit part in a film. Years later when someone casually mentions the film. Tilda Swinton is sometimes the only thing you remember about it. For example I'll mention Constantine.
Actually, Ruby Dee was the sentimental favorite to win. She'd won the SAG. Even Tilda said in the press conference room that she thought Ruby was gonna win.
Agreed! I I finally saw the Michael Clayton movie. Can't believe it's 13 years old! Qarantineed so lots of free time on my hand right now so I'll be looking for her and any other fine actors/actresses.
Best Supporting Actress: Catherine Kenner, "Into The Wild" Saoirse Ronan, "Atonement" Amy Ryan, "Gone Baby Gone"*(WINNER) Imelda Staunton, "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix" Tilda Swinton, "Michael Clayton"
If they do a biopic on David Bowie she has to play him
Yep.
Mmm hmm.
cityofchamps66 well you see...
Yeah, especially after her performance in Suspiria...
She could perfectly perform to Annie Lennox
This is officially the coolest Oscar speech given by anyone, ever. Remembered all the names, still keeping it short and originally funny. Go Tilda!
Which is how many people exactly? Out of 5½ million that is.

@Jack Penny Oh what rubbish. You just made a sweeping generalization of Finns as though they suck at English as a nation when your sample size is only 2.
She was robbed for even a nomination for We Need to Talk About Kevin... Swinton was superb.
@Huhu Haha loool "let's talk about Kevin"
@Huhu Haha The title is: Kevin needs to be talked about.
I think she should have been nominated for the sequel: We Haven’t Talked About Kevin Yet, Have We?

Yes!!!!! She was completely transformed for that movie. So many great performances over the years. One of my fav actresses ever
I'll never understand how she can have only one Oscar nomination. At least she won for this one. Great performance, although Blanchett and Ryan would have been deserving winners too.
I also really liked her performance in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Tilda deserves more Oscar nominations! She's 57 now.
😳
Holy shit. She’s 60 now and looks fantastic.
If we are keeping the count. She's 62 now
She is spectacular. I'm so glad she has been recognized with this award. It's time she gets another one.
She also deserved an Oscar for playing the White Witch in the Chronicles of Narnia, she was cunning as fuck!!
Kevin Lopez I love her in Trainwreck, which is a comedic role, and she is also great in There's Something Wrong with Kevin....dark dark and darker still.
