I’m glad that Tilda Swinton has an Oscar but it’s so weird that it’s her only nomination & win. She should’ve been nominated for We need to talk about Kevin and Snowpiercer.
Yessss!!! The thing about Tilda is that I've learned that the Oscars are super super egotistical and they HATE if you don't kiss their ass and gush about this award. Her indifference towards her win and subsequent confirmation that she had given her Oscar to her agent solidified that she'd never be nominated again, no matter the quality of her work .
What I love about Tilda (and what is the reason why she's never been nominated for anything else and never will be) is because of her humility. She is the most anti-Hollywood celebrity out there. She doesn't campaign, she doesn't kiss ass, she's not obsessed with winning or being the star. She couldn't possibly care less. The academy hates people who doesn't suck up to them and who doesn't consider winning one of their rewards a highlight of their life. Tilda's one of them. That's why she can't be stopped. Because this is all just a fun hobby that she just happens to be extraordinarily good at.
Agreed. Tilda is really a loose cannon who just seems like the type to not care about the Oscar, and therefore be treated in kind by them. She does anything she wants and happens to be incredible in it all. It’s not surprising to see her in an Oscar worthy role, but it’s almost more likely to see her playing the head of a staten island based vampire council on an fx mockumentary
The acting range Blanchett is always astounding to behold. Playing Elizabeth and Bob Dylan in the same year and getting nominated. IMO she was snubbed for I'm not there. Her incarnation of Bob Dylan was an acting miracle.
She's the real example of surpassing her own self one time after another. She's one of best actresses alive. She actually deserved this one. Tilda is an unusual character actor that doesn't get enough recognition for her work. Michael Clayton was an exceptional thriller drama with stellar acting nods to its lead and support. I'm also disheartened that Ruby Dee's work in cinema didn't receive as much attention. Given her passing, It would have been a great send off to have become an Oscar winning actress, but as the chips landed, it wasn't to be. Maybe if her role was expanded, I believe she might have won. Cate is great, and after seeing her newest performance, her career still has more milestones ahead, and a possible Oscar nom for Tàr. I'm glad that Tilda can be referred to as an Academy Award winning actress to her credit. Her performance coupled with her expressive eyes at odds with her cold and calculated corporate villainy were merited in her win. I hope she gets a chance to land a leading award nod sometime soon. She's an exceptional actress that's, not only versatile, but chameleon-like in her range.
The way she says "you mean you don't want the money", always gives me chills. She's a despicable character but she portrays fear, denial, and panic so well in her part. You feel bad for her and all the pressure she's under, and then you remember she's a shadowy murderer.

Great video. Giving Tilda Swinton an Oscar is probably one of the classiest things the Academy has ever done. Probably the biggest reason for her win is the performance itself. As I'd seen Michael Clayton, it didn't surprise me on the night.
Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis deserved Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Oscars for not only the superb work of their careers, but also their Commitment to Civil Rights Activism throughout the 20th Century.
Swinton is a great actor and her career is filled with bold choices, so I'm glad she's an academy award winner. However, my favorite supporting performance that year was, by far, Vanessa Redgrave as Old Briony in "Atonement". The movie itself was astonishing (the Sense and Sensibility of the 2000s, it even had a teenage version of Kate Winslet named Saoirse Ronan) but Ms. Redgrave's performance was nothing short of spectacular. 15 years later, I still can't watch the ending of that movie without being completely destroyed by her words and the look in her eyes. "I... Gave them.... Their happiness." Well, the Academy... Should've given Vanessa Redgrave... That fucking Oscar.
I really like this victory. I think Tilda Swinton is amazing in everything she does including Michael Clayton. I remember her in every movie she's in, even if it's in brief scenes (Constantine and Snowpiercer) or meaty roles (WNTTAK and The Deep End).
Yet another awesome video Brian, bravo!!! I too was so surprised when Tilda won but hadn't yet seen Michael Clayton ... a few weeks later when I did see it I was not at all surprised any more!!! I totally agree that she is phenomenal in everything she does and especially for We Need to Talk About Kevin, for although I was disappointed with the movie as a whole (it lacked way too much of the depth of the book, and removed vital elements that changed the interpretation) I was absolutely riveted by her performance there!!! She sooooo deserves to have an Oscar for something!!!
Tilda is hard to put in a particular box or does the usual that’s why I think she hasn’t been nominated more. She’s marches to her own beat. Lucky for us . Once in a while out of the box gets more recognition but mostly awards go to certain types of roles.
I wanted Ruby Dee to win, mostly because she never was nominated for an Oscar before, and her film work was/is legendary even to this day. She did theatre and television too. I also met her, and it would have been nice within a two year span of us meeting to see her win an Oscar. I thought the way she was in American Gangster where we didn't see her a lot meant we were supposed to see her more because of the impression she gave in the performance of her role in the film. Yes, there is the slap scene, but she did carry. Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton was very compelling when I watched it. Clooney was at the second peak of his game in this political/legal thriller. Tilda's character was relatable as one can be as a planned legal strategist trying to get away with murder but caught in the act. Honestly, when her character falls to the floor after the last scene with Clooney, it's almost sad how I hope she is okay, even if its deserved. I can understand why the Academy likes to be belated in recognizing legendary talent, but it seems the younger, more viable at the box office person usually wins. Dee's nomination was deserved, and it's not like she wasn't already a voting member of the Academy herself. I still remember how they showed the actual voting process from that ceremony. They need to do that from time to time. Dee was in that segment, I believe. I know some legends finally get their flowers, whether by supporting actor categories or by Honorary Oscar. But, it would have been nice to see Ruby Dee with an Oscar to her name. Her nomination signaled to me that legendary Black talent in Hollywood would be recognized for surviving and creating so long.
Cate is my queen, but tilda is my second queen, (I love her since “Orlando” when I was really a child) and I’m so happy tilda won it. She’s so special, like from another planet. Funny thing they acted together in “Benjamin button”
I loved Tilda winning this, but I really need Amy Ryan to get a win in some time. She is spectacular. Also, this particular year, Samantha Morton was the big omission in this category for the Elizabeth sequel.
I must have been 14 back then but I already followed the Oscar season. It wasn't Cate vs. Ruby vs. Tilda. For most of the season, it was Amy Ryan who swept the critics, including Critics' Choice, the New York Film Critics, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. She also won the majority of the regional critics and the NBR. She was very much in the running. Blanchett looked unlikely because of the nature of the part and the rather conservative Academy. Ruby Dee won too little too late. In the end, it was about the film they liked a lot and couldn't honour elsewhere. This is one of these years where I predicted all 4 acting winners by going out on a limb in two categories (Actress and Supporting Actress). It doesn't always pay off, but back then, it paid off.
Tilda Swinton is awesome and I am glad she has an Oscar. This is a very good video and great analysis. I don’t know who was the most deserving this year, all five did a great job, but I might also give it to Swinton. She should have been nominated for other films (We need to talk about Kevin at least). I have watched her in Caravaggio and even in that early role, she is great. As for Best actress- was it really close? I thought Cotiard had this in the bag for sure. I love Julie Christie, but I thought Marion is a sure winner. I watched a great analysis on Christie’s Oscar win, I am sure you will mention it.
I loved watching *Tilda's* reaction when her name was announced, when she was a young girl growing up and dreaming of being creative she probably never envisioned that moment, nor desired it. I love how she relished it for a few moments, then was detached from it. ~ *'Orlando'* and *'I Am Love'* are two of my favorite movies _Of All Time_
I hope this is a two part episode bc that same night was another shocker with Juliet chrisete losing best actress to Marion Cotillard But this has to be one of the craziest best supporting actress races of all time I personally would’ve given to cate Blanchett for I’m not there or Ruby Dee for America gangster
I bet the political and recession at that time helped Tilda win as well especially her movie kinda hinted at what was about to happen literally the year she won
Thanks for another excellent post, Brian. I agree with the choice for Best Supporting Actress. I remember the ceremony and was glad that she won. Keep up the great work. You're a pro!
Before I started following the Oscar’s I’d assumed Blanchett won(but got that confused with her double nominations) and was so happy when I found out Tilda won because Michael Clayton is one of my favourite movies - however after watching American Gangster I’m torn between Tilda and Ruby. I didn’t start following Oscar coverage until the following year when Doubt and The Wrestler were nominated
After Making video on Marion Cotillard vs Julie Christie, please share your take on the race of 2021 best actress...Carey Mulligan vs Frances McDormand vs Viola Davis vs Andra Day vs Vanessa Kirby...that was hell unsettled too
Not just the Best Actress race in 2021, but the entire year in general. The Best Supporting Actor was the only sure lock that year as Daniel Kaluuya was the only actor to sweep in every precursor. Best Supporting Actress was unpredictable until the late surge of support for Yu-Jung- Yuen at the last minute. Best Actress remained unpredictable throughout, and Best Actor had an unexpected win with Anthony Hopkins.
Next to study.. 2015-Best Supporting Actress (Kate Winslet vs. Alicia Vikander) 1995- Best Actress (Jessica Lange vs. Vanessa Redgrave) 1994- Best Actor (Tom Hanks vs. Liam Neeson)
Want to say: Cates chances of winning Supporting were slashed in half just by being double nominated that year. So if anything it was Ruby’s to win. I love tilda
A case of being in a best pic nominee made the difference in Tildas category definitely. Entertainment Weekly picked her, so they knew what was up. I’m guessing Ruby came close, with her legendary career, SAG, and being in a slick popcorn film with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe no less. Not enough people saw I’m Not There (the brief Heath Ledger frontal nudity was amazing! Lol) so Cate in third.
I hope you’ll cover the topic of the 2007-08 Writers’ Strike and how it affected the Hollywood landscape. I don’t think a lot of people are discussing this point in entertainment history.
I disagree in that this was an unpredictable category. I thought Tilda Swinton was the frontrunner. Michael Clayton was the most nominated film in the acting categories, and it was a well liked film so it was going to win something and Supporting Actress was the most likely way it would win. Ruby Dee was too brief of a performance, as you said in the video. Also, Swinton just starred in a blockbuster which was Narnia. And she had that big scene at the end of Michael Clayton with her confrontation with George Clooney. So she was in a well respected movie, she has box office clout, and she had a big scene. I think her win was inevitable.
Loved the movie, loved the role, love the actor, loved the performance. Swinton deserved the Oscar. A win that has aged well for the Academy. Her performance MADE the film. The 00's was the decade to deliver two types of performances if you wanted gold: portray a real person or a scene-stealing villain. Three of the four Oscar wins that year went to villainous characters. It was always going to be Swinton. Swinton and Blanchett were seen as having gave the strongest performances that year, but Blanchett had already won an Oscar and the film flopped at the box office, so she wasn't going to win. Also, the Elizabeth sequel wasn't as good, so it was never going to be a winning year for Blanchett. Ronan was too young to win. No child actor was going to win another Oscar so soon after they gave it to Anna Paquin for The Piano which only happened decades after Tatum in Paper Moon (Kahn was robbed). Ruby Dee was too old and not in the film long enough. Chiefly, Gangster was seen as more of a popcorn flick with its trendy Jay-Z soundtrack than serious awards contender. Gone Baby Gone was seen as a grade B drama than truly Oscar worthy and Amy Ryan was too low profile to win. Swinton had delivered memorable performances in the past and had a hit blockbuster film with Wardrobe. The combination of 1) recent box office success, 2) strong body of work, and 3) a villainous role in a stronger film overall meant her time had come.
Ruby Dee should have received a lifetime achievement award . She was a fantastic actress . Her role in American Gangster was ok but she shines bright in Spike Lee wonderful film Do the Right Thing
I remember watching this ceremony convinced Cate was going to win but I was still rooting for Amy Ryan. I was pleasantly shocked when Tilda won. I had seen the movie and liked her in it, but it never crossed my mind that she had a shot.
It will be fun for you to do a video on Saoirse, but she is so young that she is pretty bound to get it at some point, unless she quits acting or dies young or is involved in some major scandal.
If world was a fair place Cate Blanchett would've had 3 Oscars by now. Best Actress - 1999 for 'Elizabeth' Best Suppoting Actress - 2008 for 'I'm Not There' Best Actress - 2014 for Blue Jasmine (It happend 😁🙌🙌🙌) A fourth with her monstrous performance in TAR giving her a 4th 😄
very interesting how the 80th and the 95th Academy Award for Supporting Actress races are similar... and i'm pretty sure Kerry Condon will win the exact same way Swinton won.
This could be a good way to start videos where you got actors & actresses who OSCAR winners but never gotten the MAIN LEAD CATAGORY of ACTOR & ACTRESS, but been nominated George Clooney Angelina Jolie Warren Beatty Geena Davis Whoopi Goldberg Matt Damon Robert Redford Anne Hathaway
@@TheAwardsContender The only video I found that covered the Best Supporting Actress Race is The Real Awards/73rd Academy Awards by Johnny Retro. Is that the video you were referring to? If not, then what is the title of the actual video?
This was a very exciting year for this category. Swinton’s win was a shock although in hindsight it makes sense how it happened. My thoughts: 1. I’m Not There, American Gangster, and Gone Baby Gone had no support from the Academy so it was always going to be hard to win against a contender like Tilda Swinton from Michael Clayton which had eight Oscar nominations and was popular as you said. 2. Not everybody liked Blanchett’s performance, Dee’s was too short, and Ryan was playing an unsympathetic character. And then Ronan disappears after the first half of Atonement which had run out of Oscar buzz by then and got snubbed in the Directing category. 3. Oscar voters wanted to spread the wealth and picked Swinton who really is quite good in Michael Clayton as you said.
Only 1-min. in and I’m already staunchly disagreeing with a contextual premise: Given his track record with the academy, Peter o’Toole could have definitely pulled off a surprise win over Whitaker that year. The Academy loves awarding a long-overdue and respected performer, whatever the precursors. The man had seven prior nominations, some in very high-profile films!
Also, lol, “probably enough voters decided to go with the performance they liked best” - i.e., calling out the academy for functioning as it’s supposed to
Being completely honest, I was staunchly rooting for O'Toole that night, but considering all he won, I didn't think Whitaker was going to lose. He was just too far out ahead.
Yes, agreed that O’Toole should’ve been more of a contender, but Whitaker just won everything that season, so a different Oscar winner would’ve been shocking.
Tilda wore a crushed velvet potato sack during the awards ceremony that year. I loved her in Michael Clayton but I was disappointed in her fashion choice.
I simply recall vowing to smash my set if Ruby Dee won, so I'm pleased that didn't happen. It would have been an Ameche-esque insult to the competition. I also figured Blanchett was the most likely given the type of performance (gender-bending, disguised with makeup, playing a real person) but the possibility that an insufficient number of voters had seen "I'm Not There" was a major worry. Swinton is fine, but it isn't a great or dynamic role, and it's the sort of outcome that leaves me reasonably confident many voters just didn't see some of the other movies.
I’m glad that Tilda Swinton has an Oscar but it’s so weird that it’s her only nomination & win. She should’ve been nominated for We need to talk about Kevin and Snowpiercer.

Thanks for your thorough comment, and for watching! Means a lot!
@@TheAwardsContender You're welcome! One of these days I will leave a simple sentence.
It will be awesome to see videos about the nominations race. Like Best Actress in 2004, what a mess
I'm overjoyed when she won for Michael Clayton, such nuanced yet powerful acting.
Yes, lovely performance!
I cannot wait for the Marion beats Julie Christie video 😍 I think Marion's win was a surprise but totally deserved ❤
That’ll be a fun one to make!
Cate is my queen, but tilda is my second queen, (I love her since “Orlando” when I was really a child) and I’m so happy tilda won it. She’s so special, like from another planet. Funny thing they acted together in “Benjamin button”
Thanks for watching!
I loved Tilda winning this, but I really need Amy Ryan to get a win in some time. She is spectacular. Also, this particular year, Samantha Morton was the big omission in this category for the Elizabeth sequel.
Excellent points!
I desperately want to see Tilda Swinton portray Elizabeth I in a horror film
Yes!!
I can’t wait for the 2012 Oscar lead actress video viola vs merly
Ooooooh yes
Thanks for your insights, and for watching!
I remember seeing American Gangster, Michael Clayton and Gone Baby Gone in the theater. My vote would’ve gone to Amy Ryan. She was amazing.
Yes, loved her performance!
I remember the tears I cried for both Tilda and Marion's wins. It was the one time the Academy got the acting winners right
Yes!! Stay tuned for the Cotillard video!
Such a great video! Loved all the analysis ❤
I need right away the Marion Cotillard video
Haha, it’s coming!
Thanks so much for watching! I’m looking forward to making the 2008 Best Actress video.
I loved watching *Tilda's* reaction when her name was announced, when she was a young girl growing up and dreaming of being creative she probably never envisioned that moment, nor desired it. I love how she relished it for a few moments, then was detached from it. ~ *'Orlando'* and *'I Am Love'* are two of my favorite movies _Of All Time_
My vote would have gone to Amy Ryan. She was incredible.
Yes! She would’ve been a great win too.
I hope this is a two part episode bc that same night was another shocker with Juliet chrisete losing best actress to Marion Cotillard
But this has to be one of the craziest best supporting actress races of all time I personally would’ve given to cate Blanchett for I’m not there or Ruby Dee for America gangster
It is a two-parter, stay tuned!
Flawless victory for swinton...
I bet the political and recession at that time helped Tilda win as well especially her movie kinda hinted at what was about to happen literally the year she won
Good point!
Thanks for another excellent post, Brian. I agree with the choice for Best Supporting Actress. I remember the ceremony and was glad that she won. Keep up the great work. You're a pro!
Thank you so much!!
Nice, well I’m glad you found my channel!
After Making video on Marion Cotillard vs Julie Christie, please share your take on the race of 2021 best actress...Carey Mulligan vs Frances McDormand vs Viola Davis vs Andra Day vs Vanessa Kirby...that was hell unsettled too
Yes, good idea!
I love these videos! I think you should talk about the snubs of the year too. It’s always good to know
Great idea!
Next to study..
2015-Best Supporting Actress (Kate Winslet vs. Alicia Vikander)
1995- Best Actress (Jessica Lange vs. Vanessa Redgrave)
1994- Best Actor (Tom Hanks vs. Liam Neeson)
Good ideas!
Another fantastic video. Great work!
Thank you, Todd! Means a lot!
Want to say: Cates chances of winning Supporting were slashed in half just by being double nominated that year. So if anything it was Ruby’s to win. I love tilda
Thanks for watching!
Yes, agree with your points!
I hope you’ll cover the topic of the 2007-08 Writers’ Strike and how it affected the Hollywood landscape. I don’t think a lot of people are discussing this point in entertainment history.
Good idea!
It’s always more exciting when all the pre-cursor awards go to multiple people. Like this category in 2007 and last years win for Jamie Lee Curtis.
The 4 acting oscars were all totally deserved that year. Tilda swintin amd cottilard especially, cause they werent clear, but fully deserved.
Absolutely!
Great points! She might have been more inevitable than we originally thought.
Would love to see a video on Kiera Knightley, and how she was snubbed for atonement
Great idea!
Yes, great points here, thank you!
Patiently waiting for the Spike Lee losing/snubbed in 1989 for do the right thing! But great video
Good idea. Thanks for watching!
Ruby Dee should have received a lifetime achievement award . She was a fantastic actress . Her role in American Gangster was ok but she shines bright in Spike Lee wonderful film Do the Right Thing
Don't forget her outstanding turn in 'A Raisin in the Sun' as well.
It’ll be fun to explore in more detail her four Oscar races!
Please do a William DaFoe and the Elusive Oscar 😭😭😭😭
Yes! Good one!
What a good interesting movie! I'm eager to see more of this type of content, it's so cool!
Yay, thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Can you do best supporting actress 2006 Oscar’s? (2005 movies)
I talk about that race in my Amy Adams and the Elusive Oscar video!
Amy Ryan was also in Changeling right? She played the prosti and kept in the mental facility. I can still remember her lines
Tilda is MIGHTY! 💯💜
Yes!!
Bafta has become an incredibly strong precursor, in this case I'm glad because otherwise Tilda wouldn't have an Oscar to give to her agent😅
Haha, yup!
@@TheAwardsContender Frances too
As surprising as Tilda's win was, it was nothing less than deserved. One of the best winners this category has seen in the last few decades.
Another great video!
Thank you so much!
If world was a fair place Cate Blanchett would've had 3 Oscars by now.
Best Actress - 1999 for 'Elizabeth'
Best Suppoting Actress - 2008 for 'I'm Not There'
Best Actress - 2014 for Blue Jasmine (It happend 😁🙌🙌🙌)
A fourth with her monstrous performance in TAR giving her a 4th 😄
She’s a living legend!!!
what about the supporting actress oscar she has?
very interesting how the 80th and the 95th Academy Award for Supporting Actress races are similar... and i'm pretty sure Kerry Condon will win the exact same way Swinton won.
Excellent point!
This could be a good way to start videos where you got actors & actresses who OSCAR winners but never gotten the MAIN LEAD CATAGORY of ACTOR & ACTRESS, but been nominated
George Clooney
Angelina Jolie
Warren Beatty
Geena Davis
Whoopi Goldberg
Matt Damon
Robert Redford
Anne Hathaway
Great idea, thanks!
Absolutely love Tilda Swintons performances in The Deep End and We Need To Talk About Kevin
Man, DDL, Tilda, Javier.. what a year. (havent seen La vie en Rose lol)
Such a great year!
Will you ever do an Oscar retrospective video on the 2001 Best Supporting Actress race?
My friend James made one for his RUclips channel and I didn’t want to repeat his video. Thanks for your interest!
@@TheAwardsContender The only video I found that covered the Best Supporting Actress Race is The Real Awards/73rd Academy Awards by Johnny Retro. Is that the video you were referring to? If not, then what is the title of the actual video?
Do a video of Marcia Gay Harden
This was a very exciting year for this category. Swinton’s win was a shock although in hindsight it makes sense how it happened. My thoughts:
Agree with all your points. Thanks for watching!
You did a really nice job
Only 1-min. in and I’m already staunchly disagreeing with a contextual premise: Given his track record with the academy, Peter o’Toole could have definitely pulled off a surprise win over Whitaker that year.
The context is this: Whitaker swept. He steamrolled the season.
Yes, agreed that O’Toole should’ve been more of a contender, but Whitaker just won everything that season, so a different Oscar winner would’ve been shocking.
She and Daniel Day-Lewis are the greatest actors of their generation.
I can understand why Marcia, Danzel, Forrest witekar won at one point but Tilda I mean she is great but I think so either Amy, Cate or Ruby
Yes!
Oh man, Ruby was not happy. Took her a bit to clap.
Amy Ryan was great in Gone Baby Gone.
Yes!!
Ruby Dee was ROBBED
Would’ve been a great win!
As big or even bigger than the Binoche and Swinton wins was Marcia Gay Harden's in 2000.
Yeah this race was just like that year where it was a different winter for Golden globe, sag and Oscar
Agreed!
WHERE IS SAOIRSE RONAN AND THE ELUSIVE OSCAR???
Elliot Page was known as Ellen Page at the time before Page's gender transition in 2020.
The Oscars 2018
This was an undeserved win. Her performance was forgetful. She had many other performances they could have honoured her.
I enjoyed her performance but to each their own!
Dee should have won.
Tilda should win, for every movie she's in.
I thought Tilda and Amy were the 2 best.
Excellent performances
Tilda wore a crushed velvet potato sack during the awards ceremony that year. I loved her in Michael Clayton but I was disappointed in her fashion choice.
I never liked Tinda Swinton. Ruby Dee should it won.
