  • Leathercraft is cool, but let's be honest... Getting started can be daunting. There are a lot of questions in our mind before we decide to dive in: How much will it cost? How much time will it take? Is it going to be too hard for me?
    My mission is to take the mystery out of leathercraft and help you build the skills and confidence that will empower you to build your own heirlooms. I truly believe leathercraft can and should be "approachable" and attainable, even for regular people like us!
    I'm so glad you're here-- let's make some stuff!

    @claridge leather, I just came across your channel by happenstance. With current events for the past year, I had decided to take up some crafts that I have been wanting to try and dive into, but have prior made excuses to not start. I hadnt the excuse and now I am head first into these crafts, leather work being one of them. It was ironic as I was struggling to get my stitch work to be done correctly, and a suggested video appeared on my home page of youtube. It was your how to stitch video. After watching it, I learned what I was doing incorrectly. I was using the incorrect needles, and did not know there was specificity to the saddle stitch. I did my research, but I had not come across someone who explained the stitching process as in depth as you had. For that, I thank you greatly. That has absolutely earned my subscription to your channel. I also watched your leather selection video and realized that I had missed one of the three traits when I had gone in for choosing my leather. That provided me the knowledge I needed for my future leather purchasing. For all I know, you will never see this comment, but I want to thank you as you have given me the chance to make some real progress in this craft journey. I am still quite new at this and have limited resources for spending, but I hope to one day have the confidence and skill to make a business for myself in this craft. Many thanks!

      First of all, this made my day. I absolutely read and try to reply to every comment, because there is no other reason I make these videos than to serve you and people like you who are getting into the craft. Thank you for letting me know how these videos have been helpful to you. I have so many more ideas for future videos, and in time, I’ll be able to make them! 😅 I would ask a favor if you: let me know if there are other specific things you would like to learn about leathercraft, either skills you’d like to learn or just other questions you haven’t found answers to elsewhere (leather types, pattern design, selling your work, etc.). SO glad you are here- welcome! -Tanner

      @@ClaridgeLeather I was absolutely not expecting a reply, but I am glad you did. In terms of questions, I suppose remaining on the subject of the stitching part of leather craft stuff, how do you determine what kind of thread you use. I did a start of my ordering from Weaver, and one of their thread types I order is a nylon thread, size 69, 40z. Admittingly, prior to this, I ordered thread form amazon, which wasnt super great quality. However, the thread I have from weaver, feels a tad on the small side of things. Perhaps some kind of guide or even show how you determine what thread for which ever leathers/projects you do. I could ask a myriad of questions, but right now my focus is on getting my crafting up to snuff, at least before I consider the business side of tings and selling. Stitching is my weakest aspect of this craft.

    • @ClaridgeLeather
      @ClaridgeLeather  3 года назад +1

      @@BioCollision I actually haven’t tried too many types of thread, but I have found that the types I like best are braided polyester threads from a couple different manufacturers. I get them both from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply (Ritza Tiger thread, often in 0.8mm and Twist braided polyester in 0.45 or 0.55mm). They also sell John James needles and they have a nice chart to determine what needle to use which thread. I find that 0.55 Twist thread and the size 2 needles with great for lots of projects. The Ritza thread is a bit more waxy but lays flat and looks nice as well. Best of luck to you. Stay in touch!

      Hi Bob! I just saw your message on Instagram and will get back to you about the snap setters! I can tell you real quick though that I like to use “Line 20” (size) snaps and I really like the hand-setters I’ve bought from Buckle Guy. They make really nice hand tools, definitely with the money to save a headache! Thanks so much for your support! I’ve made exactly one knife, but I know how getting the “bug” works whether it’s leather or metal! Happy crafting! -Tanner

    Congrats on the baby! Leather must be the most useful byproduct of any industry. EVER. Do you know how many hamburgers are sold in one year. Let alone steak. As long as humans continue to eat meat, there will be leather. My favorite leathers are: Hermann Oak vegetable tanned leather. I have that in all thicknesses up to 6-7. Then my most favorite dyed veg tanned leather is Buttero from Italy. it is wonderful to work with. After than, anything from Wickett & Craig and of course Horween. These are just a pleasure to work with. Not a big fan of chrome tanned leather. Looking forward to the journey!

      Ha ha... My friend Don Gonzales refers to beef as the byproduct of the leather industry! I always chuckle at that. I have not tried Buttero but I have heard it's awesome! Just got some Vachetta from Italy- can't wait to try it out. I'm right there with you on W&C and Horween!! Cheers, Bruce!

    Hi Tanner I found your channel about 3 weeks ago and have watched all your content except the one with a sewing machine. I got excited about leather work about a year and a half ago and started collecting tools. Unfortunately I live in South Africa and there are very few second hand tools that i can find and buying new tooling is very expensive due to our currency exchange rate especially against the US dollar and shipping costs just makes it worse. We can get new tooling but it is almost all CCC brand, ( Cheap Chinesum Crap) that wont last a week if that. Any way i think what you have done to date is awesome, please keep up the good work and I look forward to learning from your channel. Best wishes and kind regards from Port Elizabeth South Africa

    I could not have timed it better finding your channel. just starting my leather crafting and I need to ask a question: I decided to begin my hobby with purchasing a belly cut of vegetable tanned leather. (been doing some research on my own) do you have a company you prefer to deal with? I am only going to purchase the tools I need to do my first project. going to make a bandolier for my single action revolver. going to do a 3-D loop for the cartridge instead of stitching the loops. Love your channel. really cute the way you pointed out the teeth marks. :o)

    • @ClaridgeLeather
      @ClaridgeLeather  3 года назад

      First of all, welcome to the craft and welcome to this channel! Secondly, I applaud your wise approach buying an affordable cut of leather and only the tools you need for each project. Smart! For the leather, it depends on what you're making and what type of leather you'll need to make it. I love to shop at Maverick Leather for some affordable deals on all types of leather. For veg tan tooling leather, I normally buy from a place called Montana Leather (online)-- Hermann Oak is expensive, but it's great stuff when you need it. Keep in touch, Carey! -Tanner

    What materials would you craft for a vegan? Canvas/denim or vinyl/nylon?

    • @ClaridgeLeather
      @ClaridgeLeather  3 года назад

      I like canvas, but there are some other cool materials out there. I have even seen some neat cork material that can be sewn into bags. I don’t personally prefer the feel of vinyl/fake leather stuff! Heavy canvas is great though!

    • @ClaridgeLeather
      @ClaridgeLeather  3 года назад +1

      Yes, great question, Bruce! I actually just hid the know between the layers of leather-- tied the knot in between, then sandwiched it in when I pulled the first stitch tight. Several ways to go about it (or at least two!), I suppose! God bless you, Bruce!
