Thank you SO much for uploading this video. It's great to see a craftsman advocating learning from someone else's pattern. So many who have been making their own patterns tell beginners to make their own, which is rather disheartening sometimes even if it is probably sage advice. To make your own, you have to learn what pitfalls there may to consider in making one. Lots of those things are learned best by using someone else's pattern first, at least that was the case for me. You're the first person I have seen who has (publicly) identified the positives in doing so; the ability to focus on getting the details right while still knowing you will produce something useful even if it's not perfect, and that you won't waste a whole load of expensive leather. Really refreshing, thank you!

You do really beautiful work on your own and also from other people’s patterns. I really liked what you said about learning about leather work by working from someone else’s patterns, and the freedom of working from an existing pattern with known parameters. Like you in this video, I’ve been considering that I might like to learn and grow from working with and modifying someone else’s existing patterns. It would definitely remove some of the fear of messing up a bunch of leather on something I’ve only done semi-successful mock-ups of in felt!!! I love the modifications you made to this bag, and definitely recognize the frustration of working on something and discovering only afterwards that it has been scratched or damaged in the process of making it. Thanks for sharing your process. Really, really beautiful work.

I love how HD (heavy duty) you make things. I too love to do it. I also use lock tote on screws.

I also love the buckle tuck lock modification to use the thinner leather, I will probably use that in the future
You are right on target, as I make all my own patterns & prototypes and it can be very stressful in the design & initial build(s) keeping a lot of factors in mind. The few times I’ve used another makers pattern… it’s was a very calming & enjoyable process. Thanks for sharing!!!!

I love your videos and patterns. Helped me get the confidence that I can do this too. Made my buddy a tool bag modeled after my DeWalt drill bag. Turned out well and he loves it. You taught me to saddle stitch. Now how do we do that Xbar stitch?

Tanner. Another wonderful video. Clean, concise and really informative. No one has (up to this point) come up with the perfect method to apply Tokonole to edges without it getting all over the front of the piece. Still working on that. I have seen: Fingers, wire applicator, micro applicator bottle, tiny foam in an alligator clip. Tried most of these. I still get splotches on my front facing pieces. But, thanks for video. Shows the importance of having a really good walking foot sewing machine. Some day. Maybe.
Excellent video presentation. You have a good clear voice, good cadence (I'm hearing challenged), easy to understand. Good photography, too. In focus, etc.

Really nice work,and super nice presentation,your lack of pride in allowing us to see your errors is noteworthy,we all have them but most hide them. It is all learning. I like the leather washers and the thread color is perfect.

That is a Beautiful bag. I just ordered a Cobra class 4 Last week. Once it gets here and I learn to use it, A briefcase like this is something I really want to try. what size thread did you use for this? Awesome work Tanner.
Can you do a video on using your Cobra 4? I have the cowboy equivalent and struggle with nice clean stitching on the back side. Especially after back stitching.

Great job. One caution about the white glue. The brand I used had a year good time. I often had to toss it before I used it up.
I love to watch your videos . You explain things so well! And your voice is so calm and relaxing. Could listen all day. I would like to know what size of a French gouge that you use. I need to buy one and I’m not certain what would be the most useful size.
Sorry for the late reply! Thanks so much for the kind words. I use 8mm and 12mm French skivers, from Palosanto. I actually like using the 8mm the most!
My machine scratch one of my bags to where I couldn’t buff it out. So I scotch taped all the screw heads and rough areas of the machine and so far has worked fine for me
Great film Tanner with good details explained! I am new to leatherwork and have simply jumped in and purchased a Cowboy sewing machine. Would you be able to do a film explaining needle and thread sizes for such a bag like this? Many thanks for all that you share.

I really identify with what you said at the beginning of the video, I also get uncomfortable using other maker's patterns because it feels like I'm being lazy by not putting in the work to be a good designer or I feel guilty like I'm stealing. I have been trying to get better at telling myself that these patterns are available because these makers want to share and also telling myself that most of these makers probably learned using other people's patterns and have incorporated what they have seen and learned into their own designs.
As I'm trying to expand my business and skills as a leather artisan I'm going to be acquiring bag patterns from makers so I can use what they have learned and applied.

I think there’s so much we can learn from each other, and in fact you can see many ideas in this bag borrowed from old military satchels, like the one seam turned in and the other one turned out. Thank you! I do have the privilege of editing the video too… it’s not always that smooth, trust me! 😅 I think it’s been six years or so now.

Thanks! If you’re referring to that steel bar, I just made it out of some flat bar I had. It works great as an anvil and as a pattern weight, and I’m actually planning to make more to sell if anyone else wants one!
PS, Don't use a bic lighter, use an electric soldering iron. I had one for my electronics, and it is amazing/////
