This video is the only tools list I found useful on RUclips. Most of them spend 10min on their craft knife…. Great job!!!!!

Estate or garage sales here in the states have been good for me. I found a kit with over a hundred vintage tools from the 1940-50s. Great quality for $75

Great video-- thank you! I've done a fair bit of leather work--without any knowledge or the correct tools or techniques. I've done leather work on traditional yachts with sail needles and waxed sail twine, made leather handles on traditional bows and other stuff like quivers--doing it all the hard way 😂-- in a state of complete ignorance!
I will be watching your other videos!

This is amazing! I tried leatherwork last year and have been slowly doing more. Buying tools and choosing the right ones has been tough, definitely made bad purchases. This series will definitely help alot. Thank you! I love your videos!

I bought one of those kits from ebay right at the start. Probably the worst thing I've ever bought (and I've bought some garbage). I'm still class myself as an absolute novice who messes up more often than not (and enjoy every mistake) but I've found that following your advice on tools and methods things are a lot easier than when I was trying to use that cheap kit.
I did buy some Ritza25 thread from Abbey the other day - they had some at 40% off - too good an oportunity to miss.
Lovely little cameo from Skylar at the end - think that look was the 'enough talking, I need fussing' one 🤣

Some parallel, flat mouthed, pliers are great for helping pull a needle, or press some edges together, or to help affix hardware.

A creaser helps put a "stop" in the grain layer and help it not soak in water from the side, or the edge. Like on a watch strap, sweat and stuff, it can get in if the edge is completely unfinished and create water blisters.

Thank you for this video, the only leathercraft I’ve ever been in contact with before was my grandma’s “skin sewing”, where she uses quite thin leather and sews it by hand using extra sharp cutting needles (I’m sorry, I don’t know the word in English for those). The whole idea of making the stitching holes before you sew it is new to me, so I kind of panicked and bought some tools I thought seemed okay. I realise now I’ve got to get one of those pricking forks, that seems super useful, way better than my idea of using a 1mm hole punch to make each stitch hole individually. The DIY stitching pony idea is pure genius; I’ve already got those things at home!
Can you use “regular” leather dye, the kind that comes in a bottle, as edge paint? Unless the edge paint has some special properties, surely you’d be able to do that, right? I’m a beginner on a shoestring budget and I’d like to buy as little as possible.

    • @JHLeather

Glad you found it helpful 👍 yes you can use leather dye for edge stain 👍

I'm starting to explore leather working for a cosplay, and wow, is there a lot to know! Thank you so much for this video (and the rest of the series). Your explanations are easy to understand and not overwhelming. ❤
What is the difference between the scratching awl and the stiching awl? Can one awl work for both applications?

    • @JHLeather
      @JHLeather  11 месяцев назад

Hello! SO the scratch awl is a round, pointed awl for marking out and the stitching awl has a diamond blade to help pierce though the leather and widen the holes a bit, so your needles can easily pass though 👍

Hi Jo, thank you for all of your great videos. I am in the process as a complete beginner in buying the necessary tools. I am interested in buying some sort of pressing machine that I can emboss letters and symbols on my work. Can you recommend any machines for this? Thanks in advance.

The 'full kits' should be avoided, picking the necessary and building from there is important so you dont feel cheated.

You called both stitch markers pricking irons.. is that correct? You said “diamond pricking irons” for the first option and “pricking irons” for the second.
