Two years ago I was curious about how leather journals and wallets were made so I watched this video, went to a tool exchange and I got an awl, 5 prong punch, and two edge beveler’s. Somehow with those tools, a box cutter, needles and very thick thread and some leather from my old couch I made the worst looking pocket. After watching little king goods videos, buying templates, buying tools and going to workshops at Leffler Leather in Australia two years later, I am a 14 year old boy with a dream to start my own leather working shop and teach what I have learnt. And that dream was all thanks to you so little king good thank you for helping me throughout my journey.
I can’t thank you enough. I’ve just been gifted my great-great grandfather’s entire collection of leather tools and materials and I cannot let this tradition die. Nobody else knows how to use them and I want to honor his craft by learning for myself.
It started with one video, then I realized I had watched all of them, now I'm waiting on my tools to arrive. Seriously the most costly RUclips video I have ever watched, but I could not be more excited to start down this new journey of leathercraft. Thanks for making things make sense, taking the time to film with beautiful professionalism, and inspiring people to try for themselves something you obviously love so much.

hello from Colorado. I took leather in high school and loved it, fast forward to now, I'm a retired Military man that loves to do things by hand. I came across your videos by accident and I can't tell you how much I appreciate them because I think it's a dying art. WOW! FINALLY the perfect video for starter tools ALL in one place! I’ve been making small leather craft projects for my personal use for nearly a year now yet had no idea what specific tools I needed to purchase for the different steps I wanted to apply to refine my pieces. Thank you so much for the video!

Hey can you do a video for beginners in sourcing leather and maybe discuss the types of leather you can use. What’s good/bad? Great channel. Thanks heaps.
If you want a good supply of inexpensive leather to practice and learn with, re-purpose old jackets and other leather clothing from thrift shops, and keep an eye out for abandoned leather furniture that you can harvest.
@@RocketDragons Where I am currently (Germany) that kind of stuff still sells at such a mark-up that it's far far more expensive than just buying leather, like a leather jacket at a thriftstore might still be around $100.
@@RocketDragons Mark, thats a great idea but is the leather on furniture and/or jackets the same thickness? Ive never worn a leather jacket with leather as thick as people typically are using in all these wallet/bag videos I have been watching. I ask because yes, it would be a cheap source of leather but will practicing on thinner leather be any use?

Water based glue not toxic, but have had bad luck at times with failure when used for outdoor leather stuff or high stress joins....Still use for indoor projects that don't need a super strong hold and nice not to worry about toxicity indoors....Have used Barge Cement since 1969....(made 60 prs of sandals the summer of '71....soles never parted)....Was a self taught hippy-dippy-leatherman for two years to stretch my VA while in college for AS degree in Marine Tech (ie., commercial diver)..Yes, Barge is toxic, so needs goooood air circulation....Once dry, I've never noticed the glue smell..... regarding your question at 14:40: you can buy empty markers exactly like this in most graffiti shops. the plastic they're made of is quite resistant to all kinds of chemicals because many graffiti artists like to make their own inks. buy empty ones, fill in the dye and there you go!
well, ok, just realized my answer was obsolete (see pinned comment above). Though maybe consider supporting your local graffiti shop instead of the big bad amazon ;)
That was wonderful, just wonderful. Someone else here mentioned not being able to see the shapes of the various hole punchers, and yeah, that was a little frustrating. (You waved them around.) But your generosity in actually explaining each item and telling us what YOU use was without par. Thank you so much. I was hit by a car 9 years ago and am paralyzed. The good news is that my head, hands, and arms work just fine. I did the Tandy courses about 15 years ago, but ...eh... it wasn't enough.
The difference between a punch and a pricking iron is that the punch is used to punch holes right through the leather, while the pricking irons are used to make marks and then you'd use a flat diamond awl to put the actual hole in for each stitch.
No, you can punch right through with the pricking irons. The difference is that the punch makes holes and removes material while the pricking irons cut through and pushes the leather to the side. So you dont need an awl to make the holes. You can hammer right through with the pricking irons.
When I started with leather work I used a number drill bit set for making my holes. The top of a utility razor blade the adjustment slots for my hole spacing with a mechanic pic to mark my holes and stitch lines also my cut lines as well. I used razor blades to shape my edges and 800 grit sand paper to finish my edges.also I didn't have any needles so I used fine wire to thread the wax cordage. Did it look the best?...absolutely not but j used what I had to figure out if I wanted to further my leather working skills. Things are alot easier with the proper tools lol🤣🤣 awsome video thank's!!
I've always been very mechanically inclined and have been thinking a while about getting into leather crafting. This was a great video to get started and, fortunately, I already have a good portion of those tools. Now I need to start picking up those specific to leather and start looking up all the leather types, finishes, threads, etc. Thank you!
Same here! Wish you much fun through this journey. Also been a much mechanically inclined and diy guy. I'm in that same exact process after a good year of search and hesitation. Now, all those lockdowns finally got me decided. I guess you already came a long way by looking at the date of your comment. How did it all turn out ? I wish you the best to happen over there. Be strong, hold on, be safe and happy. Send you my best vibes and greetings from Belgium! ☺
his is something I shared with Geordie of Geordie Leather here on RUclips, 6 days ago and it's to show my appreciation of all of you mentioned in my comment. I want to thank you for sharing your videos. Hi, I want to apologize in advance for what may be a lengthy comment, but it's to express why you've become essential. I've been machining for over 28 yrs and have my own home machine shop. From time to time I get commissioned projects, though I'm not financially reliant on commissioned pieces, it does help if and when I'm in a pinch. Since the covid-19 hit, all of my commissions have quickly dried up, understandably so, but I had nothing to do. My wife being an essential employee for Department of corrections administrations, in my state, she's the only one of both of us working. One can only do so much home projects from the "Honey do" list. In looking up how tooth picks are made, here on RUclips, (don't laugh, I had nothing to do), I some how ran into leather crafts videos. I binge watched: Low Tide leather, Little King Goods then DieselPunk.ro, which Tony, from the latter channel, had free patterns for leather stitching, I had scrap leather and made a few of his face masks and a few miniature plague doctor's key FOB's to share with my family, Getting my beak wet in the most basic of leather crafts via stitching, first. Then I saw video's on holsters for Leatherman Multi-tools and thought I'd tried my hand at that.Something went amok. Everything went horribly wrong. I'll admit, I didn't have the correct leather tools, so I did what Little King Goods channel suggested, by a cheap leather crafters tool set, from amazon. Soon as it came in. Guys. it still went horribly wrong. AGAIN! then i ran into your channel and followed all of your videos, specially burnishing leather. That's where It went all wrong, for me. When i tell you my edges looked like a persian kitten got into a fight with a steel wool pad, and the steel wool pad was winning, I'm underselling it. I also found that I wanted to improve on the tools that were in the kit I bought. I was thoroughly impressed with what was supplied, but most of the tools could've used some improvements. So I improved on them. I will share videos with all of you, of my tool builds for the leather crafts, along with leather projects I've made, just as soon as I learn to edit videos. Ya' know Guys, I still don't know how toothpicks are made. Again, I apologize for the lengthy comment. Stay safe, friends. And Thank you for the [educationa]l videos you share, you do us amateurs a great service, believe me.
Thank you so much for sharing, with tis tools I'm going strarted, I was looking for a long time and now I find your site , tank's so much. Greetings from Brazil 👊
I just bought your wallet template, a bunch of tools and 2 pieces of leather. Thanks for your videos and especially this one, it pushed me and I'm going to try this. Keep up your good work, and thanks for all your videos! ❤
keeping a wet brush in the fridge also massively improves storage time, or at least it does with a paint brush (decorating). i just wrap it in tin foil and try my best to get it air tight. works a charm and emulsion can last weeks.
You're my leatherworking inspiration. I hope to one day reach your level of craftmanship. But what I would really like to know is how do you store and organize your tools? I find myself just throwing things in boxes/drawers, so it's very messy. I would love to see if you have an organization system!
Great comments, wish I found this video months ago. I learned the hard way through buying crappy oil covered tools from China on Amazon. Only good thing I can say about that set was the thread is decent quality, along with the burnisher, not much else. I'm slowly buying high quality tools now as I learn this craft. I would recommend stainless steel rulers with cork backing, so much better than a plastic ruler, fyi.
Thank you so much for sparking my interests in a new hobby! Mind if I ask what thickness do you recommend for the wallets and where do you get your (brand) sheets of leather from? Cheers!
Hey man, to answer your question where to get the marker. I can maybe recommend using something what street artists are using. Try to google something like Montana Acrylic Marker Empty... You can use any colour you want a even any material you want. I will not put the exact link. But there are whole bunch of them on the internet.
Man, how I like your videos! Highly appreciate the effort you put in them. And I like your personality - the way you explain and consider people on a budget. That is a very kind attitude🥳
Just found your channel, Im a graphic Designer but I really enjoy your process and appreciate the great work you do. Ps: your photography skills really show.
Thanks for making the vid! Totally helps knowing wtf some tools do(just bout some tools last night so im trying to learn a bit more about them). Look forward to seeing more and learning more from ya!
I know you made this in August and I just watched the video for the 1st time, but man did you do a great job introducing me to leather working tools! I've been Involved with leathercraft for about a year now, and have spent a bunch of money on junky tools that I thought were decent. I became very discouraged and frankly stopped, but never wanting to give up. I think I'm going to trie it again. Thanks man.
Just got my custom dog collar that holds a gps and has quick release + buckle back from the local cobbler. The craftsmanship was atrocious - stitching looked like a toddler did it, glue stuck like snot all over, every edge was ugly rough barely straight, collar was an inch too short as he measured it with the quick release open. I was so disappointed since the gorgeous leather was wasted. I couldn’t even bring it somewhere else for clean up since it was too short. Instead, I bought some cheap faux leather for practice and a couple tools out of the craft store, bought a children’s belt out of Target, and made a collar myself. Took maybe an hour but was an absolute BLAST. Long story short, thank you for making this video! I had no idea what intro tools I might need and this was super helpful! New hobby here I come!
Thank you. Its always great to see what tools a great craftsman uses in his trade. I made a cover for a sketch pad for a friend of mine using tools that I had, but now knowing what I really need I will be able to produce a better item next time.
Wow guess I can dig up my old Molotow mop and evolve from tags to crafted leather goods. Shout out to anyone else who did a double take (or got a flashback to drip lines and train tracks) when he showed his "edge dye marker".
Thanks, I am getting ready to retire and looking for some new hobbies. I have chosen whitling and leather work. I watched your vido and it has helped point me in the right direction to get started thanks again.
Cocobolo is a CITES I wood now, since it's a Dalbergia genus. Smugglers were putting black rosewood (Dalbergia negra) logs in bundles with cocobolo because they resemble each other and make the illegal log hard to notice, so all of the rosewoods of the genus were added to the treaty list. I think that was in 2014. I have a couple of chunks that were already in the country before the import ban. I bet it works great as a burnisher.

Excellent info!....Thanks! Am an old dog still searching for new tricks & adding to my tool collection.....Leather work is very rewarding, calming & just great funnnn.....(subscribed)
regarding your question at 14:40: you can buy empty markers exactly like this in most graffiti shops. the plastic they're made of is quite resistant to all kinds of chemicals because many graffiti artists like to make their own inks. buy empty ones, fill in the dye and there you go!
well, ok, just realized my answer was obsolete (see pinned comment above).
Just got my keychain and Royal M1 wallet in the mail yesterday, and I absolutely LOVE them!
Yes agree... taste a great coffee first before you working... great job!
For this edge dye marker you might check Molotow markers, they are good for acrylic paint. They are selling them also as a empty ones.
How do you refill them?
@@LandersWorkshop twist open and refill
You're seriously tempting me to try some leather making. Fab video. Thank you 👌🏻
You're my leatherworking inspiration.
Thank you Ryan!
I've been a bigginer for a while and this video was VERY informative. Thank you👍
If you're still looking for the marker, they usualy sell them in graffiti shops.
Thank you for sharing this. I bought cheap tools to get started. I think i will start getting a quality tool here and there over time.
Great info! Can you explain what kind of leather you buy and how/where you purchase it?
I know one place is OA Leather based in Canada but not sure the other places
This video helped me a lot when I started leathercraft, thank You so much Ryan 🙏
Thanks man.
Yea bro i have been waiting for this kind of video .................... Great
Just got my custom dog collar that holds a gps and has quick release + buckle back from the local cobbler.
Funny how a person’s destiny can go from wedding photography to leather craftsman
my new fav YT channel... i'm so happy is stumbled in to this channel
You had me at "Coffee"
Thank you. Its always great to see what tools a great craftsman uses in his trade. I made a cover for a sketch pad for a friend of mine using tools that I had, but now knowing what I really need I will be able to produce a better item next time.
I'm old school. I call it Leatherworking still.
i came here becoz your vid with Peter ... your hev a great job dude ... love your work
You had me at coffee 🤤
Wow guess I can dig up my old Molotow mop and evolve from tags to crafted leather goods.
Shout out to anyone else who did a double take (or got a flashback to drip lines and train tracks) when he showed his "edge dye marker".
Nah i would rather have a good ole cuppa tea 🏴🇬🇧
yes mate, im with you
Hey i have watched so many leather craft videos and yours is interesting...you are very good at making simple. Thanks
Well, I was going to pursue a career of leathercrafting, but I don't much care for coffee. Looks like some dreams aren't meant to be.
Thank you.
Btw, a lot of times ill use a small stainless steel bristle brush to rough the leather for gluing.
Смотрю твой канал ....спасибо!
Thanks, I am getting ready to retire and looking for some new hobbies. I have chosen whitling and leather work. I watched your vido and it has helped point me in the right direction to get started thanks again.
Glad I could help!
What type of edge dye or paint do you use? It looks so fast drying! Thank you!
01:00 - OMG, 1 minute already and the guy is still talking about coffee.
18:24 - Absolutely worthed it, thanks.
0:01 for a split second I thought you were howtobasic
As a Wedding Drone Cinematographer, I'm starting to get involved in Leathercraft, I'm looking forward to beginning my journey in this!
4:34 someone is from Ontario ;)
Love the video!
I just want to say thank you so much for all of your knowledge that you share!!! Sooooo helpful!!! I am grateful!!!
Edge dye marker is just a graffiti mop
Cocobolo is a CITES I wood now, since it's a Dalbergia genus. Smugglers were putting black rosewood (Dalbergia negra) logs in bundles with cocobolo because they resemble each other and make the illegal log hard to notice, so all of the rosewoods of the genus were added to the treaty list. I think that was in 2014.
I have a couple of chunks that were already in the country before the import ban. I bet it works great as a burnisher.
It's just a simple graffiti marker like MOLOTOW
I'm not even into leathercraft but your videos are so interesting that i watch them entirely!
1st recommendation is a cup of joe.....
Sold!
Thanks alot for giving direction to enter in this field.
