Nice to see that many people really enjoying some clean, melodic, good guitar work. And this guy is a prover that a Telecaster can do darn near anything short of changing a tire ... Now these guys are starting to sound like a version of the Dave Weckl Band I once chauffeured around and mixed sound for ...
Yep, this is one truly inspiring Band. Close your eyes and just listen. Tone, timing, timbre, phrasing all support perfect note choices, the best purist electric tones, economy of style and great melody. This is rock at it's most sophisticated and subtly weaves in Blues, Country and Jazz in away that just adds to the sound.
He doesn't come across as so much a Rock guy that's cheating into other styles... I'd go more Blues/ Jazz fusion.. He's a bit hard to get a handle on, but in a good way.. Probably what makes him sound so fresh and interesting..
I'm astonished at the number of incredible guitarists there are these days. RUclips is a phenomenal asset for music geeks like myself. A year ago I had never heard of GT, the first time I saw him he was on stage with Kenny Vaughan, here on RUclips. Great!
I think GT just became my favorite guitarist. That tone is EXACTLY what I shoot for with my Tele. I play through a Hammond organ guitar amp conversion. Phenominal
I used to watch him in a little basement club in Louisville Ky... Him and a guy named Nick would do a duo act and I would sit there in awe all night! Ive ran into him a few times in Nashville in recent years and just love it that he's doing what hes doing!!!
Another stellar performance by TAR (Trapp, Abbott and Rhodes), so underrated and yet so superb! And of course rest in peace Michael Rhodes, one the finest bassists ever.
I could loop that intro all friggin' day! I watch this MusicCityRoots performance all the time, some of the finest musicianship I've seen. ____ D' Arlat Music
This was incredible! I have just discovered Guthrie Trapp and all I can say is wow! What a talent and what a great band playing together here. Thank you for this video!
Truly one of the more talented bands/ guitarist I’ve heard in a long time. He has an awesome and very unique style that. Blow me away.. The whole band is amazing as well, perfect timing, perfect pitch and volume control. The whole melody and Style of the song are just extremely amazing!
Trapp, Rhodes (huge loss), and Abbott, who I've just discovered. what a fantastic trio. And the venue looks like the perfect one to bring kids to learn what really music is about. Really great combo. Many thanks for sharing :-)
This has all the elements of what I love about guitar in it. It is incredible, deep, intense and yet delicate in its start... All like drinking a good glass of wine, but drinking the guitar...
Damn this is so good,a lot of this reminds me of Shawn Lane,Jonas Hellborg,Jeff Sipe and their trio..If those are names you aren't familiar with you need to check them out.
For all you guitaristas out there, that's Guthrie playing in drop D tuning. Also, that Floyd Cassista telecaster of his is a great instrument. I offered to buy it from him and he told me nope. Seriously, Guthrie is one of the great young players out there. Go see him if you can.
Dynamics,,never stay one vein long,,I like this , learning from this, keeping thing interesting.i think we or most guitarist never learn this. We tend to over do just one style.
Wow .....I'm not that easily impressed, as I've seen a lot at 51 years of age , and I teach guitar ........this was very tasteful with great dynamics......great job guys .......fabulous!
lol, I'm not a non player. GT is so good. one of the things that makes him so good is that he never plays non tasteful licks, someone like Johnny Hyland is awesome but as good as he is he plays licks that are way over done, extremely flashy diddle diddle type licks. 95% is amazing but it's just over done sometimes. that is why GT is so good. he is an amazing talent
I take exception to that. Johnny is every bit as good as Guthrie. They're just good in different ways. They both play exactly what they feel. I love them both. But I think Guthrie gets the quintessential Telecaster tone, and I gravitate more to his country-jazz way of playing.
Gt got last weekend off I April would love to fly if possible, drive to see you play live in virginia was going to Austin but I'm ready to do what it takes to take in some east Nashville shows with ya bra
Old question, but you can find a rundown of Guthrie's gear if you search around. He uses 60's Fenders with the AB763 circuit (Deluxe Reverb, Pro Reverb, Twin Reverb, Vibrolux, Vibroverb, Bandmaster, Super Reverb) almost exclusively. He's using a '65 Pro Reverb here. He has an AC Boost pedal on 100% of the time. For dirt he generally uses a Nobels ODR-1, but he also has his own signature overdrive pedal that he uses occasionally. He also uses some reverb and delay of course. This is a typical Nashville setup. Probably 75% of all the Telecaster guys in Nashville have a BF amp with an AC or BB Boost and a Nobels overdrive. Many of them add a compressor. Trapp doesn't use one, or at least not often.
Yes, you're correct. It's the RC unit. Actually, he just uses it like a clean boost anyway, so almost any overdrive will work reasonably well for that.
RIP Michael Rhodes on bass, great player.
RIP, Mr. Rhodes you will be missed!

Agreed....and a great educational tool as well .
I think GT just became my favorite guitarist. That tone is EXACTLY what I shoot for with my Tele. I play through a Hammond organ guitar amp conversion. Phenominal
I just discovered Guthrie - man what a talented guitarist! I could listen to this all day.
Hey Shufflekings from 7 years ago. Still enjoying some GT?
Guthrie is a monster player. No genres just great music
absolutely tasteful, groovy, in the pocket and clean....Thank you Guys!
Great stuff! Guthrie has developed a very unique, melodic style that has really inspired me to work on my
own.
I used to watch him in a little basement club in Louisville Ky... Him and a guy named Nick would do a duo act and I would sit there in awe all night! Ive ran into him a few times in Nashville in recent years and just love it that he's doing what hes doing!!!
Wow one of my favorite players of any time period. He has a way of making the guitar sing that very few are able to do.
Three of the greatest session players from Nashville right there...
Another stellar performance by TAR (Trapp, Abbott and Rhodes), so underrated and yet so superb! And of course rest in peace Michael Rhodes, one the finest bassists ever.
Absolutely love the throwback to old timey music with Angeline the baker. One if my favorites to play on my Martin. :)
My Favorite Muscian/Guitar Player, and band..Love everything they do..
The absolute best guitar player I have heard yet! Michael Rhodes knows how to groove with this guy! Drums are right on! Wow! Makes me miss the craft.
MIKE STERN, JOHN SCOFIELD, JOHN ABERCROMBIE also.

Best band I've heard in a LONG time.

Wow. Fantastic performance, great audio too. Seems like a fun venue from the video.
Could anyone recommend a way to get closer to that tone?
