      I would add anyone who feels music to their very core will understand how good these guys are. They are the very definition of "groove", they don't step on each other's musical toes, they're unselfish, they play in the pocket in an unbelievably tight way, they don't overplay, it's an almost perfect rendition of this song.

    Probably the most overlooked aspect of being a pro is what NOT to add. Note how all these guys are playing guitar, yet you can clearly hear the rhythm, bass line, accent notes in the rhythm section, it's all there and no one is stepping on the other. HUGE skill to be able to pull that off.

    I was eating late at night at a table by myself at Merlefest as the day's events were winding down, when Bryan Sutton and his little girl (about 4 or 5 at the time) sat down across from me. He is my favorite flatpicker. I kept repeating to myself inside my head "Just act normal. Just act normal." It took all my restraint to not start slobbering "Dude! You are so awesome! Oh Mighty King of All That Is Musical . . . ." A few years later I met Bryan again after a show and he was gracious enough to pose for a picture with me, both of us smiling. I keep that picture on the wall of my music room for inspiration. I love his playing.

    As a guitar player of some 50 years experience, myself, I look at these guys...sometimes I get inspired and think of all the musical mountains I have yet to climb, and sometimes I realize that I am bumping up against the limits of my talent and know that I will never be able to play this well. Either exciting or depressing, depending on the day. Does anybody else think this way, wondering how far their talent will take them?

    • @rae0521
      @rae0521 5 лет назад +35

      I used to ramble around in the psychological bushes too. Somehow, over time, it became quite OK not to be the BEST at anything. I think it had something to do with putting a stop to comparing myself to others. I am UNIQUE and so is everyone else... each of us in our own way.
      Sure, these 5 players are ridiculously talented and play wonderfully together. Don't forget that to reach that level and stay that good you need much more than talent... you need the dedication to PRACTISE anywhere from 6 to 8 HOURS.... EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE. I'm sure it wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to discover that each of them has a long list of things they can't do very well and an even longer list of things they can't do at all. Just like everybody else.

    Amazing to see how much all of these guys pretty much just "held back" to serve the song. All these guys are way beyond what they're represented here.

    LOVE IT - beyond tasteful and artistic. Really a pleasure to here these masters PLAY with each other, and not driving one-up manship on every tradeoff. Fantastic. Really speaks to the level of excellence that each player has cultivated.
