- So, you want to make comics, but where do you start? Well, you need to learn the craft and to do this you need to start with writing a four page comic. There is a fine line between how to write a bad comic and how to write a great comic. if you want to run a marathon, you don't just get up on the day of the event and run the 26.2 miles with no prep...no training. Writing comics is the same. If you want to make comics you need to learn the craft and you begin this marathon comic journey with small four page comic strips...its where all the big British names started...Alan Moore &Grant Morrision to name but a couple and they all cut their comic teeth at 2000AD writing future shocks. So in this video, i am going to break down what you need to write a killer four page comic, so once you have learned this you can go out there and write a great comic that is 200 pages long!
Remember…IF I CAN MAKE COMICS...ANYONE CAN!

I've seen this done successfully. Face it, most people have the attention span of a turnip.
Very true...and in next weeks video I’ll be talking about attention spans of readers! 😜
This is one the best pieces of comic advice I've ever gotten!
It's like someone finally explained pacing in a way I understood!
This made me go from pulling out my hair, to having a finished outline of my first 3 comic issues!
Thank you!!

Awwww cheers dude....glad it helped.
Thanks for watching
Super inspiring to hear
You have literary made this the easiest thing for me. I need to turn a 105,000 word epic fantasy novel into a graphic novel but didn’t know who to go about making this happen
So glad it helped matey!
Thanks so much for watching
THAT IS GREAT GREAT Advice! But Everybody wants to do the Big Epic first, and than people quit.
I exactly that’s why people need it start small 😜 thanks for watching 👍
@@MattGarveyComics And Watching it again. Coming back to your Channel! fUN!
My co-worker just asked me to make him a 5- 10 page comic with one of my Ocs he likes. This video popped up just in time.
Cool, hope it goes well!!!!
Writing ideas for this year's Future Shock comp and this has really helped the confidence. Thanks dude!
My pleasure buddy and good luck
This is SO useful. Really succinct and well explained, the example really made it click in my head, cheers Matt lad 👊
My pleasure, buddy…glad it helped 👍
Great job Matt!
Cheers buddy!
Loving your interviews! Keep going!
Thank you. I appreciate you taking your limited time in the day to show us beginners how better our gifts.
My absolute pleasure, buddy!
We all start somewhere…and a few years ago I was in the exact same spot you are now, so always happy to help! 👍
Great video Mate.
Cheers…4 pagers are a great way to start ☺️
Love the content!
Cheers dude
Really appreciate this one , very effective
Awwwww cheers mate 😊
Another great video!!!
I really want to do my big idea but going to settle on doing 4 page comics on each person in the world of that idea to practice properly and hopefully it strengthens the idea when I get better.
Awwww cheers mate, glad you liked it!
Well I won’t take your advice, because I have started on a full comic (24ish pages) but It will help me with the structure for each scene though so thanks.
Ha no worries matey! Good luck to you, hope you crush it!
Anyone have an idea for how to translate the theory of this into Novel Writing?
Write short stories 😜
Nice vid
Cheers buddy
Thanks Matt I'm going to take your advice i also gave you a like for the algorithm.
Much appreciated mate!
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
I’ve never written a comic per se but i’ve written plenty if short stories and one long story adaptation so… i think it’s safe to say i’m ready for a full comic story
awesome news buddy, good luck. 👍
Four pages front and back?
Four pages, beginning, middle and end 🤪
Great video! I'm going to start with 4-5 pages and see what happens. Really great advice!! Is there an online community that can review your 4-5 pages and give feedback?
i whack it up on twiter, Reddit any comic discords you can find...might be worth doing a bit of research before, matey.
Thanks again for watching
I agree, as long as it can become a full comic. You can then pitch those 4 or 5 pages, but eventually a publisher will want to see a full issue. Besides Future Shocks, what others accept 4 page stories?
Hey buddy,
Thanks so much watching!
The concept of the 4 pager is purely suggested to help those creators who have never written a comic before.
it teaches structure and will ultimately help them plot and write longer stories.
Because I see a lot of new comics and scripts from writers who have pacing and second act issues.
The 4page structure once mastered wil help people overall become better writers.
PLUS most writers who do break into the big two don’t start with short back up stories, So even though you cant pitch 4pagers to the big two, having some decent ones in your body of work will show an editor you can crush them and is only going to impress them while strengthening your appeal for them to hire you. 😜
@@MattGarveyComicsI get what you're saying and it's good advice and you did say you could add on to end up having a longer story. Great channel! Keep it going!
Cheers dude, will do 👍
Looks like my 12 pages slapstick comedy will not really fit to that layout 😅
Do whatever fits your story, matey
, thanks, Mate... really appreciate this!! Do you know if we need an ISBN or barcode to sell our minis- in local stores..?!
My pleasure, buddy.
Hope it helps!
ISBN I’d say when you are staring out you don’t really need them…unless you are working with a publisher then I’d let them sort that out! 😜
Barcodes on the other hand are incredibly useful or comic shops.
I have started using them in the last couple of years.
I’ll be covering where to get them and how to use them in follow up videos 😜
🇧🇷
👍
Hello Matt. Can I or would you recommend selling 4 or even 10 page comics at comic cons?
Don’t see why not, buddy. I think it’s gonna come down to price snd would YOU buy a 4 or 10 page comic? Is so then they’ll be an audience for it somewhere you just gotta find it. Or might be worth waiting until you’ve got a 4 or 5 short comics, then make an anthology and sell those…you only need 20 or 24 pages in total and you’re away 👍
