Although I'm older, as was my father, I know this loss personally. I moved my parents from the desert to the city more than 10yrs ago. I got them a place just a few blocks from my place so I could help out my sister who quit her job and moved in with my parents full time. Things were going really well for everyone for a couple years then dad's health started to decline. He went on palliative care for another year or so, then on to hospice. Sadly the apartment I got for my parents went up for sale and we were struggling finding a wheelchair accessible place for them. We ended up buying them a mobile home right on the bay and this allowed us to make all the modifications we needed for dad, and gave my mom a new place to make her own while she starts thinking about creating a new life without my dad. I'm so glad we were able to be there for dad, caring for him and spending as much time as possible with him. My dad was a war veteran, and after serving in the military both parents were civil service, still working for the Navy department. My dad was a strict parent, the rules were firm and you always knew where you stood with dad. But at the same time he was fair. We have family meetings where all 5 kids got to give their opinions about family decisions, mostly about where his next assignment would take us. They always said they might not do what we wanted them to do, but it would certainly be a part of their decision making. I never really appreciated how lucky I was to have the parents I got till I was in bootcamp at the age of 19, hearing all the stories of other recruits family life, or lack of family life. So much chaos and disfunction, abuse and lack of affection and simple respect for another human being. I always had that with my parents, and I didn't appreciate how fortunate I was until I learned more about the lives of others. My dad and I didn't really talk about personal things, not until the very end of his life. He'd never talked about his war experience in Korea , I knew he was shot because I grew up seeing the scars on his back and neck, but I though he was lucky because he wasn't suffering like so many others have. What I found out was how much he'd kept quiet about, and how much he suffered mentally and emotionally because of his experiences. I learned why he did so many of the things he did, why he was so strict and wanted us to have so much self-discipline . As painful as our loss is, we are the lucky ones. We had parents who loved us, who sacrificed for us, who helped us to be better human beings, helped us to not be afraid of hard work and to challenge ourselves. To always remind us that we are capable and worthy. We are lucky to have parents who loved us enough, who we loved enough, that we will miss them ALWAYS. Now, I'm helping to care for my mom. My sister still lives with her, she drops her off at my house Monday - Friday, so she can go to work, and I spend time with mom. They my sister picks her up and they go back to their place at night. Mom is almost 90yrs old now, she has a touch of dementia, she visually and hearing impaired. Mom and I were never close while I was growing up, we were very different and she didn't get me anymore than I got her. It is weird that the two "kids" that have ended up being there for my parents, especially mom, are the one's she didn't approve of most of our lives. By "approve of", I mean the life decisions we made. What is so cool now, is over the last few years, spending so much time with mom, I've gotten to know her, know why she thinks the way she does and the things that have happened to her that helped for her opinions and outlook on life. Mom is a religious person, I will never be that. I know more now about why she's turned to her religion, and she has a level of appreciation of why I choose not to belong to the church, or any other religion. In so many ways, these last days, weeks, months and years are a gift. If your heart is open to it, even in the presence of illness and death there can be so much healing for everyone too. Take care of yourself, you are a lucky man to have had your father in your life, I'm so sorry you lost him so early in your life, as well as his own life.

I’m so sorry. So proud of you guys!
My grandfather passed away December 28th 2022 from stage 4 liver cancer.
He passed 1 day after his 76th birthday, in his bed with his wife of 50 years.
So sad but yet so grateful that he was home when he passed, because that’s what he wanted, he was a truck driver for 40 odd years.
I have a few pictures ! But I also have a vehicle he was working on and now I’m trying to get it running for him so I can paint it with his ashes in his honor.

I can fully relate to what you have been through. In January just coming up to 5 years ago, I had a mental breakdown (High stress/high pressure work) and had to give up work. 2 months later my daughter returned to New Zealand with end stage kidney failure. Being an O- blood type, she needed an O blood type donour. After a lot of tests, it was decided I was a suitable donour, at age 64. Then, because of covid, the transplant was put off, and put off again. Finally, after 2 years on dialysis, the operation went ahead. My mother died 3 weeks after our transplant operation. My daughter is now doing very well, and I also recovered fully.
Then. in January of this year, I suffered a massive heart attack. The heart specialists have told me that the only reason I survived, is because I was healthy (not fit, but healthy). Now, 11 months later I am back to living/travelling in my caravan, but only have 35% heart function, so get tired very easily.
One never knows what is going to happen in the next second/minute/day/month..... So make the most of your time and live your life the way you want while you can.

It's obvious that you had an incredible father. It's obvious that you were an incredible son to him. I have a feeling your dad wouldn't want you to cry over his loss but to celebrate the life he lived. And what I mean by celebrate is live. Your life, just like you would have only may be a little bit more purposely. Because you do know how precious life is. He's going to be rolling down every highway and back road with you. But this time he's going to be able to quite literally spread his wings. ❤ your lucky to have had such a great dad! ❤

What a beautiful bittersweet story. My wife and I started on the Tiny House On Wheels journey back in March 2021. We hired a local professional tiny house builder to build our 8&1/2 foot wide and 20 foot long tiny house. Because of supply issues, taking care of sick parents and in-laws, the unexpected death of his daughter and many other road bumps, it took our builder 2&1/2 years to finish our house. Our builder finally finished in August 2023. My wife and I have now been in our Tiny House On Wheels for 5 months and we are loving it and it has been worth the 2&1/2 year long wait. Best of luck on your journey!!!

I am so sorry for you and your family in the loss of your father. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and the delays on your van build were just that for you. Thiss allowed you to be there for your dad and your family. I had a "happens for a reason" in 2021 that allowed me to spend the last few months of my mom's life with her, being there for her and my dad. I would never have been able to have been there for them if I my "happens for a reason" had not occurred. While I was upset at the time it happened, I am very blessed and grateful that it did.happen. Hey guys, I’m only about 10 minutes in the video I’m a 57-year-old guy and I’m not handy at all but here’s what I learned in life get an idea in your mind of what you think it will take in time or dollars. OK now double that times it by two add 100 then x that by four and then go with that estimate. That should have you covered at least pretty close. I can’t wait to watch the rest of your video. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing Colin. I agree with you, until some tragedy hits us we don't truly understand the fragility of life. In late October I received my cancer diagnosis, I had 1 day to decide to have extremely risky surgery to safe my (or end)my life. I had my surgery in November and now in very long recovery having to depend on the kindness of others to help me 24/7. You will never forget that time, life is different when you lose a parent or parents when you're young. Im sure every once in a while your dad will tap you on the shoulder and let you know he's still keeping an eye on you and he's ok. Your doing it right life passes in the blink of an eye, one day your twenty thinking every one else is older then all of the sudden your 50 and wonder how it happened. My parents were both gone early from cancer and I have appreciated every moment of my life at a level those who haven't been through it can understand. Good luck on the road.

Your absence has been deeply felt and I knew something more important that YT was consuming your attention. The tragedy and loss is for those left behind. Those that have moved on are in the best place ever. And, they are still with you. Thank you so much for coming back and answering the questions that have kept me wondering. I'd see glimpses of your presence in the VanWives videos and at least knew you were still breathing. Colin and Paige ... welcome back. Sorry for your loss, but so elated for your return.
