I'm a violinist and violist and had the opportunity to do a master class with Mr Hoffman, and it was an incredible experience. He is both a phenomenal violist and phenomenal teacher.
this sounds absolutely amazing! i am currently in the proccess of learning this piece and if i can play it half as good as this, i will be extremely happy, because this is just that good.
I'm wasn't criticising his playing. Just making a statement...geez I don't know why everyone got upset with me haha. Though I could probably play it and upload it =) I doubt it would be better since I don't have an orchestra behind me and I'm only 15 ;) Furthermore, I don't think you need to be 'better' than someone to give constructive criticism. Just my opinion :]
NICE!!!!!!!! This is pretty awesome stuff right here. Hoffman has a WONDERFUL tone, and a sensitivity and musicality that are off the charts. I am in love. The orchestra: who is this? Great stuff all around. 5 thumbs up.
Miles, I do not recall this being readily available in sheet music when I played the viola (1960s-early 1980s). I have heard another version of this besides yours (Peter Chung) and I wondered: what the hell was I missing? Where WAS I when this was available? It's BEAUTIFUL, and so is your interpretation!
@cameronsanati I personally think that it sounds like a viola played right. A cello is deeper. This has the timber of a cello with the pitch and clarity of a violin, which is why a viola exists.
@MaryKatherine Brown Same here! Good being stand partners with ya, Mary Katherine! But he seriously is one of the best violists I've heard. His sound is so beautiful!
you need to have a decent understanding both of musical technique, and the piece itself, in order to make decent criticisms. You have neither, and before you reply I don't know either, I have studied music to A-level standard (I have an A* in it), I also took my grade 8 viola aged 14 and attained a mark of 140/150. Learn when you're dealing with someone who knows a lot more than you do.
thumbs up if you play the viola!

I am a violinist, and I admit the viola's sound is rich and beautiful! It's a guilty pleasure of mine :)
