  • Max Bruch (6 January 1838 - 2 October 1920) was a German Romantic composer, teacher, and conductor who wrote over 200 works, including three violin concertos, the first of which has become a staple of the violin repertoire.

    The Concerto for Clarinet, Viola, and Orchestra in E minor, Op. 88 was composed in 1911 for his son, Max Felix Bruch, and received its first performance in 1912, with Willy Hess (viola) and the composer's son Max Felix Bruch (clarinet) as the soloists.

      The Kegelstatt Trio, K. 498, is a piano trio for clarinet, viola and piano in E-flat major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Composed in 1786, 125 years before this work by Bruch.

    Viola is closest to the human tonal range in the orchestra and the clarinet is as well in the winds. No wonder they compliment and flow together so well!

      @@francissadleir9805 well the bassoon covers even the lowest bass, and most of the soprano, so I stand by my claim. No other standard wind instrument covers the bass voice

      @@maxgamesst1 In orchestra flute is appropriate to coloratura soprano voice, oboe - lyric soprano, clarinet - dramatic soprano and mezzo soprano and bassoon - alto voice. Chorn - contratenor voice, trumpet - tenor, trombone - baritone and tube - bass voice. Cello is like orchestral metronome. It is appoint tempo with is piece playing by orchestra. Double bass is base in orchestra like f.e. foundation for building/s. 1st Violins plays main melody and 2nd violins and violas plays another melodies compare to 1st violins. Percussion instruments helps in f.e. culminate moments like plates or tam-tam. They colorised sounds of backgrounds. Charp or piano or celesta too. ...and thats it. This is an orchestra.

    I'm beginning to think Max Bruch is the 19th century Gustav Holst, in the sense that he is too well known for just one work, when there are so many other masterpieces that deserve to be equally popular.

    The way this piece is composed is mind boggling mastery....the interaction between viola and clarinet is like a ballet love dance.

      Similar to the Brahms trio.... the interplay between clarinet, cello, and piano is outstanding especially in the slow movement

      This is the only concerto I know of for the two instruments, but there's a lot of chamber music for the trio of clarinet, viola, and piano. Mozart and Brahms wrote trios for that combination, and there's also Bruch's Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano.

      Mozart may have been the 1st to do that in his Trio, K.498, though the colours of the orchestra add so much to the Bruch.

      True, Bruch's major works, at least, are often performed. That said, I never heard of this concerto before....BRAVI!

    Beautiful music beautifully played. Bruch, as are the soloists and accompanying orchestra and Conductor, was a master of his trade.

    This has to be a unique combination of soloists. Please enlighten me if other concertos were written. But as usual, this largely forgotten composer delivers yet again. Max Bruch was undoubtedly a genius, and it's very sad that most of his music lies in neglect.

      I don't know of other concerti, but don't forget pieces for clarinet, viola, and piano. Mozart's Kegelstatt trio, Brahms's Clarinet Trio, and Bruch's own Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano come to mind.

      @@sactownviolist2668 Brahms clarinet trio was originally for clarinet, cello and piano. But don't forget 'Marchenerzahlungen ' by Schumann. This is also a wonderful piece.

      There's also Brahms's two songs Op.91, written for piano, viola and soprano, but which is often performed and recorded substituting the viola for a clarinet. One could perform it with the clarinet taking the soprano line.

    The maturity of Brahms orchestration and blending of solo voices is incredible. Wonderful rendition as well. Carefully listening to this reveals new subtleties each time I listen. Don't just listen to this one as background music...really listen and you will be given a gift.

    I am in love with this concerto... What a shame it's not a Bb clarinet... I'm a clarinetist and tried to study the viola but it was too tricky... Anyway one of my dreams is to play this one day with a fellow viola player :) (along with Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances)

    After the introduction, the main theme (from bars 17 to 28 or from 1:07 to 1:56) of the 1st movement, is more than just a paraphrase of Edvard Grieg's Solveig's Song from the Peer Gynt suite. Peer Gynt was composed in 1875 (and premiered the next year alongside Henrik Ibsen's play) and this beautiful double concerto was composed in 1911.

    It's a lovely little piece but consider: The Rite of Spring premiered fewer than 2 years after this piece's first performance!

      How patronising the comment by Paul Bunyan is. It's by no means a little piece, and in its own way, very original (not least on the choice of instruments). Stravinsky's own neoclassical period, which was very extended, is one piece of evidence to back up the point that Bartje makes.

      Bruch was already outdated when he landed his only real hit: The 1st Violinconcerto.
      He refused to go further than Mendelssohn did in harmony 20 years before him.
      Not to say that his music isn't nicely crafted, it is just outdone by his contemporaries. Just consider: His last work, the Octett for Strings was written in the same year as Bartok wrote "The miraculous Mandarin".
      They sound like they are 100 years apart.

    it's truly unfortunate that this work also has the scrolling sheet music posted. I REALLY enjoy listening to it while reading or studying, and with the sheet music, I can't read or study anything but the sheet music while listening to the music. There MUST be a conspiracy theory I can make here... :)

      bckm54 I feel it. As much as I want to study for Form and Analysis, I'm too busy analyzing the music on the screen for this piece. I'm currently learning Bruch Romanze for Viola so this popped up in my Playlist. I have a friend that is a great clarinetist, definitely will bring this piece up to him.

    This music of Bruch was something extraordinarily beautiful music piece, There was an excellent iimagination of the composer to give color and taste to the music. I will continue to listen to Bruch, may be he can be one of my favorites like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Scarlatti. By the way, the two soloists were superb as well. Thanks for uploading.

    It's attractive, certainly, but a bit soggy - and unmemorable. I'm afraid I can't escape the feeling that Bruch really is a one hit wonder.

    Why, Max? When you were such a great composer, why steal from Grieg? I know composers of all genres of music at all times has done this, but it's still disappointing, and this one is very blatant.

      who cares, it is a gorgeous and very original piece. Show me anyone else who chose this combination, let alone brought off to such good effect. I love Grieg, by the way, especially his violin sonata in G.
