- The legendary violist Nobuko Imai, a longtime Heifetz Institute faculty member, brought with her to the 2017 Institute a custom arrangement by Emil Ludmány for solo viola and string quartet of Max Bruch's Romance, Op. 85. The performance is introduced by Heifetz student Benjamin Francisco, cello, who plays in the string quartet alongside Heifetz faculty member Francesca DePasquale, violin, and fellow students Kae Tanimura (violin) and Hsuan-Min Chang (viola.)
Captured in performance at a Celebrity Series concert featuring Heifetz Institute faculty on July 14, 2017 at Mary Baldwin University's Francis Auditorium, home to the Heifetz Institute.

Always my favorite moment in this piece.
Why are female gender string players required to have their upper anatomy exposed, while males are always fully clothed? Must be a prerequisite.
Well. Obviously they're not "required" to... that would be ridiculous. I know many female violinists and the topic has come up: generally it's a matter of finding a comfortable long sleeve performance shirt- my colleagues want something lightweight that doesn't tug on their breasts which can happen when they move their bowing arm in particular. It is not the easiest shirt to find you know. All that aside, the females like feeling good and the less material on a hot stage the better. I would wear a singlet if I could! It would look unprofessional tough.... when I wear a performance coat I ALWAYS wear a short sleeve shirt underneath (sometimes with the sleeves actually cut off). I'll never do the whole massive-cuffs-protruding-from-the-sleeves thing unless I'm absolutely forced to!
Here is a link to one of my concerts with my dear friends wearing whatever they wanted as long as it was black. Mainly long sleeves you will notice because we were there to make music. I wouldn't ever ask my colleagues to 'sex it up a bit' just for the audience. That's disgusting.

I don't suppose three months later that you have a response to my comment....?
Well, Bill, I don't make the rules...I just enjoy them.
