- In this episode of Sound Like, Rabea & Matt try to recreate the tones of iconic rock band Muse BY Busting The Bank! Rabea takes on the role of Matt Bellamy, running through a killer Ibanez Axion Label, Friedman & Rift Hawker dual amp rig, along with the biggest collection of pedals ever seen on a Sound Like episode! Matt fills in the lower end by taking on Chris Wolstenholme's bass setup while also giving us some tasty piano runs from some of Muse's more key focused songs!

Without Busting: keep the sig rule.
BY Busting: everything is fair game, sig or not.
yes
totally agree
Agree
Get this man a cookie 👍🏻
I agree
Honestly I’m just here for Matt’s piano playing.
Matt Bellamy or Matt ?
@@wlawnsldj both
Thanks for watching guys - we may definitely consider getting rid of the sig rule. But I’ll wait to see what Matt thinks too!
I want to clear up one thing... so many people seem to be unhappy about the way we play certain riffs in sound like generally.
It’s really important to make it clear that, neither me or Matt know how to play any of the songs, we have to listen to them on the stereo, transcribe by ear, dial in tone then shoot the clip. So we really don’t have time to stop and look up notation or tabs. It’s way quicker just to play it by ear!
Sorry if that annoys some people, but it’s the only we can get through the amount of videos we have to shoot.
As always, I love how much you all love sound like, it’s been a few years now, and we really appreciate all the support!
I've always thought that the sig rule wasn't just unneeded, it was backwards. People already know that if they want a "shortcut" to someone's setup, they should buy the guitar or amp or pedal with that person's name on it.
A rule saying "Sigs allowed, except for the player in question's own sig" would increase sales of signature-series guitars beyond that player's own fanbase, by showing them to have a bit more versatility, and provide interesting content when something silly happened, like if the Ed O'Brien strat were perfect for Metallica or something along those lines.
@@gmofftarki ooooh I like that. You can play sigs just not of the person in question. And if not, you should ban Les Pauls, since they're Les Paul's signature model, just to be fair ;)
Have you never considered buying a Manson guitar, same as Matt Bellamy?
@@ezguitarist4637 They only use guitars stocked at Andertons, it's worth remembering that these are after all promotion videos for a guitar store, they're not likely to use something that they don't sell in their store!
The reason I like these videos is it inspired me to continue my guitar learning journey a few years ago plus watching the gear come together and see where it ends up close or not it’s really fun watching you guys play and having fun that’s what music is it’s finding a way to express yourself and getting out of the crazy world for however long you can play for.
And the no sig’s for another’s rig I think in concept is pointless because as a guitar player I find whatever gear I think will get a specific thing or tone I use it for that, I hope you and Matt and the other anderton’s staff are safe and well cheers mate.
P.s whenever you guys can start up the series, I think a Radiohead by busting the bank would be a great shout you guys did so well the first time I’m genuinely interested if more expensive gear will be better
The best thing about this vid was definitely Matt playing Butterflies and Hurricanes hahaha
Yeah absolutely, i was really really surprised by that !
Rabea gets his mind BLOWN by Matt's playing😂😂😂😂😂
Massively impressive by the way. Great stuff!!!!
Only Rabea?
Matt's piano outro was sick!
The hard part about Hysteria isn't playing the riff, it's playing the riff nonstop at full speed for four minutes.
I feel you. Started a cover band and it took me some time to get the endurance to be able to play it.
That's why Chris hates play it lol
@@GiulliaGomes1 and acording to x radio interview he confirmed it's hurt a lot 😂
Just use a looper and fake it XD.
So true. A lot of Chris’s bass lines take A LOT of endurance to do. Try New Born all the way through, your fret hand feels like it’s falling off at the end 😂
Also can we all just recognize Matt’s talent? Rabea, we all know how talented he is, but Matt played keys and bass on this and didn’t miss a damn beat. Rabea always blows me away though.
Even Rabea was blown away by Matt's pianoing.
The Hysteria intro did it for me. Top bassing
RAbea, Jaime.
Tom Ahoks my bad. Fixed.
I think anyone that plays any instrument, no matter if string, percussion etc, gets blown away by someone playing the piano well. There's just something about it that is genuinely amazing.
7:32 trogly's guitar show? Also more piano based bands, especially if matt want to, his playing was lovely.
Zelicanth ikr haha
I was expecting a “Welcome back troglodytes” after that!
Zelicanth hahahahaha yup😂
Troglodytes!
Lmao
Genuinely couldn’t care less if you use someone else’s sig for someone else’s rig. A guitar is a guitar, sometimes artist guitars have features you can’t get anywhere because they all play these custom shop behemoths most of the time. Just get the right stuff!
Yeah. A guitar is a guitar, bro. And also there's the thing that you can't ever get a music man for that matter. I mean, all of them are sigs almost. The rule is very limiting nowadays.
Well they were always going to struggle to get anything like Matt Bellamy's axe, as his are hugely customised with on-board effects, so I wouldn't blame them for just getting something vaguely similar.
Didn't they get sigs for Sound Like Slipknot by Busting?
@@freebzz Mate, as Anderton's don't carry Manson (or Cort) guitars they can't use his signatures in the show.
Matt used an Ibanez Destroyer back in 2004...so aint complaining for the guitar haha
I'd suggest treating the "No Sig" rule as a guideline - something to strive for, but when caught between a rock and a hard place, it should be permitted.
One of the best BY Bustings yet, guys! Great job.
I say get rid of the “no signature guitar” rule
For by busting
It doesn’t really make any sense
I agree
Amen!
Exactly! It’s sound like, not look like! Additionally, a lot of pro players use other artist models live as well due to being friends, getting them as gifts, and just liking the piece of gear! For example, Eddie Van Halen isn’t the only pro player that uses EVH signature guitars, amps or pedals. So to dial those users rigs in for ‘sounding like’ the person should be looking at whatever it takes, especially with busting the bank!
I want... I NEED more of Matt's piano playing!
Tones all around pretty much spot on. The few minor inaccuracies in the riffs were a little off-putting, but then Matt's arpeggios at the end more than made up for everything! Absolutely blown away!
Finally! I've only been requesting this one since the start of BY busting. Glad to see what you guys have done with it.
Agree with most. Ditch the rule... At the end of the day it's "Sounds Like", not "Be like" 👍🏻
Yeah, it's "Sounds like". I can't think of a signature that sounds unlike any other instrument out there.
@@JUNKO____ Tosin Abasi's signature 34-string flayed fret 83 humbucker sitar!?!?! /s
Absolutely. Ditch dat rule.
i disagree with most, cos then they sound nothing like the guy who's signature guitar they got
Rabea....I think you've found your new keyboard/Piano player for Toska! 🤣 😮🤘🏻🎹🤘🏻 Well done matt!
Love anything and everything about the sound like series. Love Bea! And Matt..... hell yeah we need more of you on the keys! Epic work as always. Love love love it!!!
You fellas absolutely killed it with the playing on this one!
Matt is a sneaky musical superstar. We need to hear him sing now! Drop the 'no sig' rule. If a guitar fits, it fits, doesn't matter if an artist had some input on it.
My only gripe with this series is its SOUNDS like not LOOK like or SPEND AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE it's all about that tone and the sound, if someone uses a od1 theres no point buying a jhs bonsai just because it's more expensive I think that's irrelevant to the whole point of the series just because its more expensive doesnt mean itll sound closer if theres no point in getting it
To be fair this video proves that although they will also try and get something that looks like what said artist uses, they will always put sound first , hence the Ibanez in this video
Wow that was actually incredibly impressive. Amazing work guys!
astonished with matts piano skills
Not going to request anything, just want you guys to know I love this series, and you keep doing an increasingly impressive job on the tones.
Also cudos to Matt on the bass playing.
My feeling regarding "no sig for someone else's rig"; if it works, it works.
Watching this right after seeing the "without busting" Muse episode, and it's obvious that Matt is a lot better at bass now. He didn't even try to play Hysteria last time (switched places with Rabea), and he's nailing it now.
High quality work, so pleasant to watch and yes the piano gave a big breath happening in the vid’ ! Big work / thx !!!
If that's the case with "the no signature" rule, then you shouldn't use a Les Paul for future videos.
I'm also sure Matt Bellamy has used a Wolfgang in the past.
along with strats, teles, DC-LPs, SGs, seven-strings, etc. i was personally hoping for a guitar with a sustainiac
@@efrazable same and if not a sustainiac they should go with that pretty reverend
Les Pauls are not signature guitars, they're a shape as there are signature les pauls like the Gary Moore signature
@@KeeperOfPoops what are you talking about - it was a guitar that was designed for and to be endorsed by Les Paul himself. If its got someones name on it & they endorse it, it's a signature guitar.
Indeed the les Paul is quite unique in being a model and sig guitar. A signature les Paul is a signature of a signature 🤷♂️😂
holy crap that piano playing!!!!
You guys are fantastic. These videos are addictive and the content is always exciting. You guys play everything with love and i really appreciate such great content. Please keep it up when you can
Holy crap, we need more of Matt playing piano!!!!
If anything this just reminded me how many massive tunes prime Muse had.
One thing I have with this, MB uses a sustainiac wuite often, so a schecter might've fitted better than the Ibanez.
Other than that, great video!
Cheeky little request: Sound like The Stray Cats/ Brian Setzer! I know he plays more clean than most but the slapback paired with a driven bassman style amp would be a challenge for without busting I think
Gretsch G5420
Fender Blues Junior
and a delay
I came to see the guitar rig choice and I ended up repeating Matt's piano playing at the end half a dozen times. Was truly wowed. Excellent video everyone. Loved the lot and gobsmacked at the end!
"It's the most complex rig we re-create"
Devin townsend : *has entered the chat*
Hey - I don't think they've done a Sound Like for him yet...
@@phantomechelon3628 exactly
I need a Sound Like Devin video!
Hello lads. Today we're sounding like Devin Townsend, by busting the bank.
That is, we've paid him to bring his stuff here and play it for us.
Because what else do you do?
Oh dude loose the Sig rule. If Im trying to sound like someone, I just want the best guitar for the job PERIOD. I think it should be more focused on spending as little money as possible.
I think you're mistaking this with the other series they do..
@@JUNKO____ Nah, I just think they should loose it overall. If it's for a before you buy, your someone who is broke and wants the lowest cost option. Therefore who cares if it's a signature as long as it works. This person cant afford to be choosy
If it's by busting the bank, get the best option period. If it's a signature model then so be it. If you dont want a signature, sense you are already watching a by busting the bank video. I'm sure you could afford to by something else, and can use the signature they chose as a comparison to look for guitars that are like the signature, but not a sig.
@@mind7719 I'd agree about the "without" series kicking it to the side.
You guys freakin' nailed it! Amazing job! Such great guitar, bass, and keyboard tones & playing!!! My god, I'd sell a kidney for Rabea's rig. When Bea played the amps separately, and then together, it was like dying and going to Tone Heaven!
Beautiful piano playing Matt, was the highlight of the video!!
Sound like king gizzard and the lizard wizard would be cool!
Maybe Andertons should be stocking Manson guitars.
Also, many of Matt's guitars are hard tail.
You need a guitar with a PsychoPAF pickup and a Sustainiac.
Saying that, I have several Manson DR-1 Drones guitars, ZVex and a Kemper and but I'm not talented enough to make it sound like Muse.
evilution I wish Manson guitars were stocked everywhere 😂
evilution Agreed. To me some of the sounds on this this video are too thin (i.e. lacking in midrange) for Matt’s sound and I expect the Floyd is probably contributing to that.
Now that Matt's the majority stakeholder in Manson's, maybe he might be willing to stock their guitars in a few more stores around the country.
Steven Davies certainly now they are doing the budget Meta range.
I really thought this was going to be an 'Andertons now stocks Manson guitars' reveal video
Still remember hearing Hysteria for the first time during the Brit Awards broadcast in 2004, that main bass riff blew me away haha! I had just been playing guitar for a couple of years at the time and just had to work it out on guitar.
You did it amazingly.
The rule of "No Sigs" should apply to only videos where you're trying to not bust the bank. But if you're busting the bank, have at it!
Also, would love to see a sound like on Good Charlotte, Silverstein, Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and really I could go on. But here's some to start. Good work you guys!
I wanna see a sound like Billy Martin from Good Charlotte and I think they should get
PRS SE Standard (they can use the whammy bar for the solo in Like it's her birthday)
an American amp like a Blackstar or a fender
Mesa Throttle Box
MXR EVH phase 90
A Tremolo (for Sex on the radio)
A delay
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah
and maybe a whammy (for Predictable)
I think you can abandon the sig rule. If you're on a budget or there's no budget, you're always gonna go for the best guitar for the job and the price range, you're never gonna consider whether it's a signature model or not.
Brilliant video fellas!
Sounded really good you guys, the 2 amps were are a great shout and the piano was a nice touch :D
I dont care for the "sig rule"
ps: Matt on keys always shocks me in the best way possible
i care, cos if they got the reverend reeves gabrels model they'd sound nothing like reeves
Hell yeah, awesome to see you guys come back to Muse. Still waiting for a Sound Like Ghost, The Doors (Robby Krieger), Brian Setzer, Alex Lifeson By Busting or K-On (just yo give you guys the challenge of taking on music of an anime)
i screamed yes upon seeing this video title. also all the sigs for all the rigs and holy shit new born was explosive
Absolutely nailed it. Matt take bow, it was a pleasure to listen to you play piano.
Bear in mind, this is about finding the right gear for the sound, not exclusively about busting the bank. Get the gear that does the job with no budget in mind, not focus on racking up a tab first.
1 - Get rid of that silly rule of not using signature gear, at least for the By Busting epis.
2 - Stop focusing on price for the measure of a By Busting episode. If a lower priced piece of gear is a better fit for a given task, then USE THAT, not more expensive options simply because they are more expensive.
By Busting should mean "not constricted by a budget", instead of "let aim for the stars and see what we can come up with".
but they can't really get signature models for the without bustings
or is that the point?
@@sakimiyu4169
The point is they should use whatever fits best, even if its a signature piece of gear, regardless if its without, or by busting.
@@00Resev well, without busting they need to keep the budget in mind for those who can't afford
@@crazymindU2A
You are missing the point.
The point is not the budget, but the right gear for the job.
On the by busting episodes they are focusing more on what the gear costs, instead of choosing gear because its the best fit, regardless if its high or low priced.
One simple example is what they did with Black Sabbath.
The without busting epi had literally the best gear for the job. The signature Epiphone Tony Iommi SG (with Gibson USA Tony Iommi signature pickups ). The signature Laney Tony Iommi 15W amp. A spring reverb, and a Sabbath inspired drive.
BOOM!
The right sound can be had for below 1500£.
Aaaaaand they chose to do a by busting episode as well..................why?...
It didn't sound any better, and it was expensive for expensive sake.
And that's the point.
@@00Resev hi, thanks for your reply. I get it and I agree there's no need to be price-conscious with unlimited budget.
Now, after giving it a thought, if a sig falls into the price range in 'without busting', yes, it shouldn't matter. Thank you for explaining this.
Loved the piano at the end, that was brilliant
Wow!!! I think this was the best one yet. Matt is one heck of a pianist
I, a bass player, watch these like I know what they're on about lol
Basically this is a rig from one of those upfront higher pitch bass players called "guitarists" where they play a position called "lead" in this case. lead means people notice them and their instrument sound is more staple to the song their playing.
WOW Matt!!! Loved hearing you on the piano!!! Amazing. I enjoyed entire episode you guys did a great job. Rabea awesome as always but great to see Matt show some of his many talents too. Yeah ditch the sig rule
You guys killed it. Then the piano playing..... Siiiiick!!!
Sounds so good!
Andertons should sell Manson guitars!
Ye i think they would sell really good to many people like muse and manson guitars looks good and sound good:)
That’s not going to ever happen
Not gonna lie I swear the title and thumbnail said "Sound Like: Music" hahahahaha
Cheddar The Shredder they come close a couple of times
Glad to see you’ve still got your piano skills Matt. Get that man a Muse DVD.
Whomever does the video editing on these is just absolutely brilliant, well done!
Axe the “no signature” rule, by that logic you shouldn’t be able to use a Trini Lopez on a Dave Grohl rig, and that’s just completely contradictory
I was thinking that exact scenario
As a massive Muse fan, this is Awesome!! I was about to complaint about you didn’t go for a Digitech Whammy - Matt have used it for ages, more or less all iterations of it. But glad to see you added it 😉 On a side note, I have always thought of Muse as a newer generations Queen, - you can really hear the inspiration, also in the never records, even though they have evolved as a band. And experiencing them live is just phenomenal.
Never had a chance to catch them live, but I do have the HAARP DVD which is amazing. They are all such great performers, but Matt is just insanely talented.
He’s chained whammy’s in the past, he loves them almost as much as Tom morello
Well done guys, excellent job!
I am really impressive by how good Matt plays piano. Really, where he's been riding this skills. My God, amazing.
damn Matt's an awesome pianist :O beautiful :)
“No” because you need to find the most appropriate gear, no matter who’s name is on the headstock.
matthijsfix well what if the “most appropriate gear” would sound better, even, closer via use of someone’s signature? Guitars barely do much compared to amps
I clicked for the guitar sounds and found myself blown away by the bass tones! Well done.
beautiful piano playin'!!
You could have used a Manson for the guitar rig! Or the Cort Matt Bellamy Signature!
the cort is discontinued and too cheap, the mansons they don't stock either
William Allison the black version of the Cort Matt Bellamy signature is discontinued but the red sparkle one is not.
Sound like Ghost or Highly Suspect
Ghost 👍🏻
For highly suspect just get a nice strat and a Marshall
Highly suspect Is literally just strat+fuzz
I've been waiting for this for SOOOOOO long
Sick keyboard playing going on there We should see more often Matt playing 🤘👊🤘
First off, holy hell, Matt on the keys was awesome.
Second, ditch the sig rule.
Last, to celebrate ditching the rule, do a series where you are limited to signature gear but it can't be used to sound like that particular artist. It needs to be used to sound like someone else.
Re: the sig model.
Chad Smith of RHCP had a sig snare when he played Pearl. Is that what he actually played? No. He played a Yamaha Jimmy Chamberlain sig snare. So if you want to sound like Chad, you actually need Jimmy’s sig snare. Just goes to show that sig models aren’t necessarily relevant to achieving a desired sound.
Amazing piano playing!!! 🤘🏻🎸🖖🏻🎹🔥
Smashed it lads!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I vote: signature guitars ok! Busting the bank = no limits!
No . Lose the signature rule. You’re the professionals, we rely on your judgement.
Matt, you killed it! Loved that piano.
Well done, chaps. Good work.

Avenged Sevenfold (Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance & Johnny Christ)
The Cure (Robert Smith, Reeves Gabrels & Simon Gallup)

or The Smiths (Johnny Marr) BY busting
Vinyl Scratch upvoting for Vai and Dream Theater
The Smiths.... Good shout....?

@Charlie Payne yeah it's a good shout! cos the without busting was a flop
The 'no sig for someone else's rig' rule is... weird. I don't like it.
it's not weird, i love it!
but it does limit the gear
THE BASS SOUND LOOK SO GREAT!!!
Great job boys .. as always 🍻
Nowadays, sig guitars are so common that it almost feels like 50% sigs 50% normal. I vote include sigs. I don’t care whos sig it is. Most of the time sigs have hardware or features that regular guitars don’t usually have.
Who wants to see Matt playing the Butterflies and Hurricanes Piano solo 🎹?!
Paraphrasing: "We can't get te Zvex Fuzz Factory here". Game over. That's the freaking THE thing with Matt's guitar madness.
wow amazing piano playing!
I can remember Matt playing a Yamaha pacifica with rust on the strings...and a solid state laney amp back in the days of TCC at Mount Everest. Also recollect he used to have a EVH music man covered in gaffer tape.
I do like watching these vids but also think Andertons need to bite the bullet for busting the bank, Surely you need a Manson guitar for this or When you did Edge, the Edge signature strat. I think surely if the guitar sounds good for it, why not use it for busting the bank why not use any guitar you see fits the bill it you want too... but I don't really think a Ibanez fits the bill for Bellamy although he probably had one at some point but he also had a 200 quid Yamaha with rusty strings which to be fair was a superb guitar for the money.
I agree. Surely they know somebody with a manson that they could borrow and a fuzz factory. Matt bellamy did use ibanez back in the origins of symitry tour. But for me this video didn't sound like muse at all. No plug in baby? What a cop out.
The hidden rule is they use gear in stock at Andertons. Always assumed Manson Guitar Shop has the exclusives on MA series and MBs are.... Elusive.
ZVEX are hard to come by
@@eevee_p Mansons are everywhere these days. And in previous videos they have borrowed an amp off someone. They are professional musicians working in a music shop.. Nothing should be hard to come by.
@@connieconcon123 are you dumb?! it sounded exactly like muse

MORE PIANO! My goodness, that was awesome.
Wow! Matt your probably the most under rated all rounder out there! Great video guys !
I would suggest turning the "no signature guitar" policy into more of a guideline than an actual rule. Make an attempt to find a non-signature guitar but if there isn't anything better I don't have an issue with you using one.
Thank you aztec guitar god
You’ve already done sound like Frusciante but pleaaaaase do RHCP
Yes.... This would be very appropriate, with Frusciante coming home.....
Strangely I have a friend who plays in a muse tribute band. The guitarist has spent the last 4 years replicating, as close as possible, Matt's rig. What you guys have manged is still only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Matt's live sound. But bloody good job.
Matt !! my man is coming in clutch with the musical talent !
