    I had to wait a year to get my purple Genesis. It was worth the wait though. You are right about the pickups, they are vintage output about 7.5K ohms. I swapped them out for a Dimarzio set and that guitar is the best one in my collection now.

    • @greekfreak1980
      @greekfreak1980 2 месяца назад

      The bridge pickup is actually 15,5 K ohms, that's pretty hot, more than a Duncan Nazgul.
      If you have an amp with a good high-gain channel these Ibanez pickups can get you decent tones.

    Dave from Jane’s Addiction is one of my all time favorite guitar players so I inherently love this body style/shape of Ibanez. I know he mainly plays PRS now, but last time I saw them he played his (or one of) white RG on “Been Caught Stealing.” Fun fact - it was the second to last show at Irvine Meadows. They played the entire Ritual album, plus a few more songs.

    Got mine last week after months of waiting and I'm super impressed. My last Ibanez was a Jemm 77FP so this is a bit different but still amazing. Another difference is, the neck runs the whole length of the fingerboard now right up to the neck pickup (rather than the last four frets being an extension of the fingerboard over the body).

    I have the 2007 RG550XX 20th anniversary in this Roadflare Red. The 20th anniversary does not have a volute on the neck and has an embossed 20th anniversary backplate. I did swap the pickups to a set of Dimarzio Satch pickups. Sick guitar, and it’s a keeper.

  • @martinclayton7260
    @martinclayton7260 2 месяца назад

    I bought my 1980's RG 550 secondhand in 1991, and I still have it. It did have a maple fingerboard, but I had a new neck fitted after the original split, it's had new pickups, Damarzio's, new pots, new knobs and switch tip, Cust made truss rod cover, new trem, I hated the original trem as I drove me nuts when the arm would never stay where I wanted it to, new wiring, and new jack socket. The only original parts on it are the body, scratch plate, back plates, and machine heads.

  • @bc454irocz89
    @bc454irocz89 2 месяца назад +2

    You have to swap the magnets in the pickups and they sound way better!!! Put the alnico in the neck and ceramic in the bridge, they shouldve been this way from the factory but theyre opposite. I think Ibanez did a great job balancing the old with the new. Love that they have the classic neck joint but I also love the 5 piece neck and volute for strength and the fact they fixed the neck pocket from cracking. Only problem is it comes with rough frets and fret ends but nothing some polishing cant fix. What more can you ask for from a MIJ guitar for under a grand? I sold my red one but might pick up a yellow one

    I managed to pick up a used purple genesis a few years ago and its so fantastic. The neck is like a wafer and in truth probably not my favourite shape but it plays into the whole hot-rodded 80s speed vibe. I thought the V pickups were not too bad at all but I did replace with some gold Dimarzio Gravity Storms. The only thing i miss about the og pickups is the in between sounds have this nasally thin sound that some might hate but I found really characterful and unique, after replacing the pickups it now has a more typical in between sound, fuller and arguably better but slightly less character.

    I loved my RG550, an 89 Desert Yellow model I refinished in a black stain, black headstock.
    Dimarzio Tone Zone & Steve Morse Bridge in the neck. Tbh I want to try the Morse again, it seemed like it just worked as a high output neck pickup to 18yo me.
    Once I bought my first Gibson, though, it immediately fell to #2. A 24 3/4" ball bat just fits my big mitts perfectly.
    If you have a classical background, you may love the wide/thin Wizards. Probably an easy port over from classical acoustic necks.
    But, there's no perfect neck shape for everyone. Thinnest might not be fastest in your hands.
    But if these are still made to that old standard, it's a quality option at a good price if you like you some RG.

    I've never owned an RG but I remember when they came out in '87, which I think of as the year of the great Ibanez revival, when they really began to conquer the guitar world, or at least the super strat world. I remember trying the RG, the similarly inspired Jem, the Saber and other models. I thought of the RG as the ultimate shred stick at the time. I agree that the pickups on contemporary RGs do not sound as good as the more PAF design of the 80s. If I had an RG I would pop in either a Tone Zone/True Velvet Middle/Air Norton set, or go for the Vai Evolution set, or pop in a MoJoe/True Velvet Middle/PAF Pro set.

    I got a white jem jr , doing a scalloped neck ( sending it off for that ) a shallow scallop , not as aggressive as Yngwie but about half that , deeper on top three string and shallow on bottom three. The guy doing the neck is going to do blue petals on the vine work. I got a marbled bluie white and black pickguard , gonna paint the claw with a enamel blue. Gotoh FR style bridge , new locking tuners and locking nut . Bought a set of blue with black poles, Dimarzio Utopia pickups to go in it. New full pots , and new switch. Cant wait to get it all together.

      @@timcole421 After the neck job , the pickups and parts , the guitar itself and the case , eh , maybe 1.5 k or so , my time. etc. If done right , I will end up with a Utopia style Jem Jr. with the quality of a boutique style Japan PIA and even better because the entire fret board will be scalloped. SO eh , instead of spending 3500 on a PIA and getting good craftsmanship , I'll spend 1200 , and have top tier craftsmanship. I'll take that.

      @@timcole421 Besides , everyone knows , what matters is the hardware on a guitar , the body and the neck with CNC matters a lot less today than use to. I have firefly guitars that will destroy many guitar company brand big names 10 times the cost of my fireflys. This is my firefly version of a Ibanez PIA and it will be a playing workable piece , not something I'm going to hand on the wall to look pretty.

      Awesome!
      Make it what you want it to be.
      I mod all of my guitars, even just filing the saddles and nut to not hurt me. Lower friction pots.
      Most Floyd nuts get lowered by grinding the underside.
      This and more before changing pickups or any more common mods.
      You gotta put the time and money in to make it "yours".

    I'm so glad they keep pumping these out for fans of 1980's guitars. Super quality and great price. My only issue is I had young fingers in the 1980's, but they're not so young any more, so the small neck makes my fingers cramp up after a while. Wish they'd re-issue the 540R Radius as those had more fendery necks.

    I also have RG550 RF and becomes my go to practice guitar loaded it with Mo Joe and Paf Joe. I had to replace the pickup selector when it started having issues in just 3 months of use. As it turns out RG550 reissues apparently have low quality selector. Even my old 2005 MIK RG370DX has better selector quality.

    In the mid to late 80s, Ibanez were the guitars everyone wanted. The colors, the floyds….many days and nights looking at magazines hoping to get one. I worked my ass off one summer to get an RG540. Still have her. All white and banged up but lots of miles put on.

    My first guitar was a used blue RG550 back in the 90', it was an amazing guitar, and the closest thing to the signature Steve Vai Jem that I could afford at the time. 🎸🥇👌🙂

    Bought a yellow 550 genesis a few years back. It is a great guitar. I ended up swapping the stock pickups for some pink DiMarzio PAF Pros in order to make it more like the original JEM guitars. I've always wanted one of the early JEMs with the disappearing pyramid inlays but I can't afford that so the closest I can get is putting pink pickups and green knobs on a 550.
