- In this video I will show you how to replace an Oxygen (O2) Sensor on your Jeep. This process is very similar to other Cherokees models but today I will show you how to do it on a 97-00 Jeep Cherokee XJ with federal emissions. This process may be similar on other Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, and Comanche. I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. If you have any other questions that the video doesn't cover make sure to comment below and I would be happy to answer.

After unplugging the old harness, I cut it right above the old o2 sensor so that I could slip the closed end of the wrench onto the the sensor. An attempt to reduce the possibility of stripping it. Worked great! Only took a mild tap of the hammer on the wrench. Your video helped me do the job!
Great straight to the repair! Looks like a simple repair. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much!! It really helped me out a lot by doing this video. I thought I only had two oxygen sensors on my Jeep. You're a lifesaver!!
I have a two-wheel drive Jeep Cherokee sport and I love it it's a 1998 thanks for all your help couldn't have fixed it without your help. I bought a brand new back to 98. I've been changing the brakes everything thanks to you
Er
Thank you. Nice and straight forward.
Lots of good information
Always like your videos, very helpful and easy to understand, to the point where I can do it myself. I have done headliner, and Suspension jobs on my 2001 jeep Cherokee by your videos Thank You
Nice job Austin. That old sensor came out without a fight...
Very good information, thanku🙏
thanks, great idea for the thread chaser....will be doing O2sensors on my 96 XJ. I'll put a little grease in the thread on the exhaust as well as the thread on the sensor.
I would recommend a high temp antiseize or dry lube for the threads. The heat from the exhaust may just dry up the grease pretty quickly.
A very good and informative video, thank you!
Thank you very much 👌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😍🤝🏻
That came right out, I used a pipe wrench with a pipe on the handle for leverage came right out cold!
O yea the old pipe wrench with a giant break bar almost always works very easily.
Thank you for this. hope i can ask questions later and get a reply. Woman always get over charged. will try and do my self.
I'll do what I can
silly
Have a 92 Jeep Cherokee sport I changed my O2 sensor it was pretty easy I'm a female and I've been working on cars for a while now and you are right we get overcharge sometimes or they try to
I’m replacing my upstream (pre cat) with NTK’s along with that entire super 44 exhaust swap I was telling you about 👊
I thought the NTK's were discontinued? Although there are some stockists with old stock lying around. After fitting NTK's my Jeep ran like a champ but unfortunately the wires on the downstream got tangled up in the driveshaft recently & I couldn't get NTK, used Walker from RA instead
I thought the NTK's were discontinued? Although there are some stockists with old stock lying around. After fitting NTK's my Jeep ran like a champ but unfortunately the wires on the downstream got tangled up in the driveshaft recently & I couldn't get NTK, used Walker from RA instead
Wish mine was that easy to remove
Was wondering... I have a 90 Cherokee Laredo
Want to smog but failed visual.
No flash of check engine light on dash.Any ideas? Thankyou.
Excellent video Mate 👍and my friend has a 2018 jeep wrangler
Who cares buddy
Is this the same for a p0141 on a 99 xj?
My catalytic converter was replace recently. Do you think I’d need to replace my o2 sensor? Should it be replaced every year?
hello friend, I have a 1996 cherokee and I can't find the sensor anywhere, in the place where you have it my exhaust pipe has nothing, is there any other location? It should be noted that mine right in that area is quite bent due to a big accident I had years ago, but I also don't see any welding points to assume that the hole was filled (and the accident was 15 years ago and it has been working fine until 2 months), I recorded a video, could I pass it on to a contact so that you can help me locate it?
How many o2 sensors units are suppose to replace?
I have a battery voltage meter is all the up!...at desame time my check gauges indicator light is onn.....but i did replace the front sensors units that closed to my engine...but seems to be it didnt worked...i did not check the sensors by the catalyc converter....do you think that cause the problem the sensors in catalic converter?
The voltage meter shouldn't be affected by the o2 sensors, either its a bad battery, alternator, or gauge.
How did Bosch sensor work for you ? I have learned that the only o2 sensors to use are mopar or NGK . Apparently the jeeps don't do well with any other aftermarket o2 sensors .
Its working great so far, I've always used Bosch and have had great luck with them
@@OutJeeping Good to hear . I'll be replacing both of my o2 sensors this weekend. I'm going with NGK . 98 TJ 241K on the clock .👍
I recently replaced my upstream when I had to replace my exhaust header. Unfortunately I'm still running rich, certainly smells like I am. I haven't noticed any change in my mpg before or after. Still don't have the best fuel economy. Wonder if it's a dud. Not throwing any codes for it.
I would get an OBD2 scanner that displays real-time info and take a look at the values from the O2 sensor and see if they are within spec, they should be if you're not getting any codes.
@@OutJeeping I have one but it doesn't always read. Fails connect (times out) most of the time. I currently don't have the downstream hooked up because I'm replacing the tailpipe but it's been too cold.
@@MrMoxes I hear ya I'm sick of this winter too. Do you still have the cat on? If it's off the exhaust well definitely smell different. Otherwise you may have problems somewhere else causing it to be running rich such as the tps or map sensor which also effect fuel/air ratio.
@@OutJeeping the CAT is off, yes. I also replaced those recently last year as well. Have been trying to pin down what it might be. I knew I'd notice the smell more easily, just got me thinking when my mpg never got better than 12 or so.
@@MrMoxes I would like into the TPS and map sensor because those also affect air fuel ratio and they could be bad and not throw a code.
Hey I'm was wondering where do you get the blue tooth reader cause I was planning on getting one?

@@OutJeeping i have just ordered one also
Im about to do both 02 sensors tomorrow... hopefully it goes well.
Im just confused why people don't like Bosch?
I've never had issues with them.
Some say Bosch don't agree with Jeeps but could just be an urban legend...I got Walker though recently as everyone said avoid Bosch like the Black Death!
Hello. I was wondering how much are those sensors on the average. I live out of the country and I’m told only to get OEM parts. Where I live they sell NGK brands is this a good option in your opinion. Thanks
I've heard good things with ngk so it should work fine. But the one I got here was only about $30 USD
NGK is famous for it’s high quality spark plugs. NTK is OEM and the ones which work the best with the pcm.
Better not to use Bosch O2 sensors. They do not give the correct signals.
Get them off Amazon they ain't but $22
The downstream O2 sensor also affects the fuel/air mixture. This became the case after OBD2
? that is new to me but I don't know much
Can the o2 sensors go bad without signaling a check engine light?
Possibly, if the sensor has been bad for awhile the ecu will learn the incorrect values from the o2 sensors and think its running fine
@@OutJeeping thanks for the feedback. It actually turned out to be the o2 sensors on the jeep that was causing problems but again no CEL. Thanks
My 02 sensor cable seems longer than the Bosch... did the Bosch 02 sensor work legit?
Many say, not to use Bosch but to go with NTK... whats your opinion?
I have put Bosch on many jeeps and still run them on my jeep daily, never had an issue with them.
@@OutJeeping thank you for replying
2001 Anniversary Edition has no rear sensor after the cat. Original factory pipes and cat all the way up to the muffler. Had it for 5 tears and just noticed. Anyone seen this before.
How many o2 sensors are there on a jeep? 1 upstream and 1 down right?
Depends on year, if it has california emissions after 2000 it would have 4 otherwise majority of the time its just 2
Theres 4
Theres 2
What code was thrown on you're scanner I got a P0159
I believe mine was P0420 for the downstream sensor
Anyone have the part numbers for both?
My 1996 Cherokee XJ is having trouble accelerating after being idle at a stop light. Could this be an Oxygen sensor issue?
Possibly but could also be other things, hard to say over the internet
@@OutJeeping Took it to two mechanics. Diagnostics didn't show anything wrong. It just really struggles to accelerate coming out of a stop. Runs fine otherwise
@@watergawbard did u replace tho O2? hows it running?
@@rc9266 The O2 sensor was replaced, that didn't help. It only happens when I'm at a stop. I let off the brake and hit the accelerator and it moves so slowly before kicking in. Then it runs fine. I have tried a few bottles of fuel injector fluid and that does seem to help for a time then it goes back to doing this slow accelerating coming out of a stop. It's difficult to diagnose because it runs well otherwise and it starts fine.
@@watergawbard fuel pump pressure regulator but can also be the whole fuel pump assembly
It would of been nice if you would have shown how to disconnect the sensor at the connection
He literally did. You just pull it apart
Do you have to disconnect the battery before doing This?
You don't need to, as long is the vehicle is off and you aren't touching the leads together then you should be fine.
@@OutJeeping whats touching the leads in spanish please? Im trying to search in Google but mention any kind of things 😅
Any idea why my jeep wants to stall out during idol, and then rev itself to stay alive? 2006/7 wrangler trail 6 cyl.
It could be bad map sensor or tps or up stream o2 senor. Is it throwing any codes?
@@OutJeeping no codes. I will replace all O2 sensors today. You are the second person to offer that advice. Thank you! edit: I have replaced the map already
@@caseyhill7419 I would also check vacuum leaks, look over all the lines and connections coming from the intake manifold.
Vacuum leak
Turns out it was the PCU. Thanks guys.
do the 2001
What app does he use and how does it work? I'm real curious.
The app is called "Torque" and I use a $20 bluetooth OBD scanner.
I made a video on how to use them here ruclips.net/video/RNJMegF2Fw8/видео.html
@@OutJeeping Thanks so much man, best xj account on youtube for sure.
@@OutJeeping I just ordered the OBDII and was wondering if you leave it attached at all times or just when you need it?
@@samzimmermann248 I only use it when I'm scanning otherwise it's on all the time when its plugged in.
So I have two sensor , it’s that matter, they are the same, can I just buy two sensor?
Are you saying 2 total sensors or 2 downstream sensors? What year is your Jeep?
You should have cleaned tose threads with a wire brush.
That is what the O2 sensor thread chaser is for.
P cuántos sensores tiene una cherokee sport 2001
2001 should have a total of 4 sensors with the "pre" catalytic convertors.
Yes what
Huh?
Yeah the O2 sensor in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't going to last much longer. Starts fine but eventually runs extremely rich. And if I hit a water puddle, it'll run even richer yet and eventually stalls. But will restart just fine. Gotta replace my front driveshaft first (4.0L, so dual CV joint :/) then I'll monkey with that next.
how can you tell it’s running rich? gas smell?
Don’t even try an open end !
I will say I've had better luck getting down streams off with a wrench than upstreams, probably because of heat not being as extreme as upstream. But this sensor was off not too long ago so that's why it came out easy, usually with some heat it comes out fine too.
Ok
Where is the o2 sensor 1 bank 1
On a jeep 4.0l ?
Up on the down pipe after the header on 99 and down. 00-01 they are on the header.
@@OutJeeping the one on driver side closest to the engine correct?..thanks!
I hope my 1997 4.0 only has two o2 sensors and not 4 😂
Those zip ties FAIL ,the wire Will fall and get failed by drive shaft.
Zip ties are used everywhere on vehicles to hold wires in place so I think i'm good
@@OutJeeping depends on the quality of the zip tie. Most fail due to heat or the sun. Doesnt pay to buy cheap ones!
You could have saved yourself some money by cleaning it with some brake cleaner. And reinstalling it.
Five minutes and dealer charged me $1700
Uff...
What year Jeep?
A video of exactly what tool NOT to use. Shame that you keep this video up without informing your viewers that you got lucky. An open end wrench is one of the worst tools to take to an old 02 sensor.
Maybe a adjustable wrench would be more appropriate lol. If it's shameful then I'd like to see you put out a video better than mine. I don't currently have a o2 sensor socket but a wrench and heat work every time for me.
Why are you using Bosch? Lol. Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. That’s not OEM. That’s an aftermarket overly priced piece of garbage. Jeeps (not that yours is a real Jeep 😂) don’t like that brand. Surely you know this?
Lol do your research. Yeah it might not be OEM but $25 for a bosch sensor compared to a $95 Mopar sensor is not overpriced. Bosch has a great reputation for making high quality OEM matching equipment. Definitely a better option than cheaper Chinese sensors. Never have I had issues with this brand of O2 sensors with the multiple jeeps I have owned.
LC is a 🤡. A joke
You do NOT use anything other then ngk 02 sensors. LOL. Hilarious that this kid is trying to make a informational video and yet using a 02 sensor that will throw codes for jeeps because the PCM doesn’t like them. This is something that’s very well known and understood with Jeep owners. You don’t know anything. Clearly.
