Alot of mechanics don't check the camshaft synchronizer it gets so worn the wobble damages the sensor & eventually the new one they put in. Usually you just see a slight rubbing hardly noticeable on the 2 parts. Some new camshaft synchronizers come with a plastic alignment cap tool. Good video Marty.

If you buy cheap aftermarket parts, they do not have paint marks on the inside of the new synchronizer to align the reluctor window, you can also turn the oil pump drive with a long screwdriver to align it where you need it to drop the Syncro down in the hole properly. New aftermarket parts also do not have the holes drilled, there should be paint marks identifying proper alignment but yours had none. You can see when you aligned the junkyard part, the reluctor window thin metal aligned with some notches, you called INDENTS on the Syncro, no need for the alignment pin if you just use the notches after you get a good idea in your mind of proper alignment at 20:13 on the video, the Syncro metal and the reluctor metal meet at about 1:00 and 7:00 positions. its not for a newer year part, its the aftermarket cheap way of making it but they did not put paint marks, amigo. The reason for using a toothpick instead of a metal pin is in case somebody forgets to pull it out and they start the engine, the wood will break and not the new parts. Thanks for the detailed explanation, next time now you can use the part with no pinhole and no paint.

Thank you so much. I have this same problem and was able to follow along 100%. Unfortunately I have the same problem with my aftermarket CPS - it doesn't line up correctly at TDC. So I returned the part after working on my XJ for hours and running to the store several times. Guess I'll have to go to the junk yard and find an OEM CPS. Oh well. Anyways thank you for the time and effort you spent on this. It helps a LOT.

Once i give it some gas the rpm goes up but comes back down to 10psi with the Gauge kit. Idk what else to do I replaced the heads this weekend cause the previous one was cracked and leaking coolant into the oil and I had low oil pressure, I was hoping the heads would take care of that but no, then i replaced the oil pump and still idk what else to do any ideas?

Yup I have one of these. A pain to mess with some times. Just take the plug out of cylinder 1 and get it on TDC . No need to take all the crap off the fans and all. Put finger on spark plug hole you will feel air suck in or want to push you off the hole when it wants to push you off. That's compression stroke. Then get to TDC. Easier than removing all the crap off the front.

Nice. I seen tons of videos and read tons of words on forums related to jeeps and this is the first time i have seen and heard anything about the top dead center mark on the water pulley. I did notice the ruler marks on mine when i changed my water pump and kinda wondered what it was for since i was sure its on their for a reason but i just put it in the back of my mind. Very good thanks learned something today. Also very good explanation very detailed and not jumping anything important or stuff like that . I actually prefer this coil setup, putting the new coil pack in was as simple and unbolting and unplugging it and then plugging it back in and bolting it back in rather than have to unplug one plug wire at a time and trace it and try to put them back in the right spot and then try to trace down which one was wrong when it starts misfiring

Thanks for making this video, Marty. My 02 Wrangler just threw a code so I went to Autozone to have them read it. Their OBDII code reader said it was the camshaft sensor, so I bought a new one and decided to RUclips the proper way to swap it out.
I was happy to find your video. I hope my swap goes as well.
Question: If I'm only swapping the cap, do I need to find TDC or is that only if you need to pull and swap the entire shaft?

I understood most of what you explained to your audience and followers, although I do not understand the English language, and what I write now I write through a translation program.
I hope you will answer my questions.
First, is the camshaft sensor able to be replaced by replacing the spark distributor?
Second, what is the reason that pocket engines consume so much fuel?
Is there a solution to this very bad thing?
    Accept my greetings. Thank you

If you're talking specifically about the Jeep 4.0L I can confirm, that yes they get bad fuel economy. It's the the way they were built, fuel MPG didn't seem to be that big of a concern. My 99 Jeep Cherokee only gets 10 mpg. Pretty horrible for a motor with such low horsepower. Mine does have 33" tires, but it still only got about 12 mpg with the stock ones. I've heard swapping to 12 hole injectors can help get better mileage, so I'm going to try that next.

I’ve been trying to find a video for this same jeep and cam shaft sensor that really shows everything good. So thank you! I was about to change the spark plugs and coils but I think I’m going to just start with the cam shaft sensor🤞
I have had this problem for years! My jeep does not like to start when the engine is hot. It’s getting much worse too and almost never starts when it’s hot now...
I’ve read that when I get the Cam shaft code I shouldn’t assume that’s exactly what it is all the time but it only happens when the engine is hot and everything else seems to be fine but I guess I will find out. Any recommendations or suggestions would be really helpful thanks again!

You can put your finger over the spark plug hole. When the compression tries to push off your finger your on compression stroke then find top like Marty did with an extension or similar tool.

Actually for the pin or toothpick to pass thru and align you want the number one piston on the TDC of the exhaust stroke not the comp stroke. You can check this if you ever change the timing chain. The two alignment dots on the gears align with number 1 cyl on top of the exhaust stroke. Then if you check the CPS which replaces the distributor. You should be able to pass the toothpick. Nif it does not you need to loosen tge cps base and adj. Check that timing mark you use when the timing cover is off and see if it aligns. It may. My point is when it does its on tge exhaust stroke not intake tdc.

You would have thought the owner would have cleaned it up. Did his mother not teach him that you don't go to the Doctor, wearing dirty underwear. 👀 😫
