As a past pupil, matriculated in 1979, I can tell you what makes the school special and will quote my Maths teacher, Flash Venter, who was a jockey coach,"rugby is religion at Grey".. and that sums it up in one word. Friday before a big game was full of spirit in the hall with the cheerleaders. .and at the game it was electric. And when we talk about the local and regional swimming galas, it was full of spirit. And when you talk about the last day of matric and the announcement of the new headboy and prefects that was a historic ceremony. Derby against Grey High or Queens College was a special train trip with hundreds of pupils playing various sports. A real honor and privilege to be a pupil at Grey College

Rugby is the main sport and it pumps the passion trough those boys' veins, but that is the spark to the flame. Sport is part of the culture with rugby at the heart. I did not play rugby, but played 1st's in other sports. If your sport code has their 'derby', the boys will be in full force to support. Your fellow boys' support is what drives you to be better and better. You do not aim for A team, you aim for SA Schools. Competition is fierce because everyone wants it and then you work harder. Even though rugby is the heart, any and all accomplishments were hyped, celebrated and almost blown out of proportion. In the hall we would cheer for the guy singing at an event, the country math champion, the first team hockey, soccer, tennis and the skyfskiet champion. All are celebrated. Grey delivers SA representation in all sports and not just rugby, because it is expected (believed) that you be the best in the country if you put that grey badge on your chest. That belief is what breeds success.

Well, the quota system advantages WP, Boland, SWD, EP---where rugby is the preferred sport of the "non white" community. They dont have to compromise on strength, while in the FS, they have to select players in lower teams, to meet selection requirements. And there are several schools in Bloem and the FS, which would give good account of themselves in PE
