Loving the yew vase, you won’t know this but I am a dialysis patient, and I spend my 3 x 4 hour sessions a week watching you and 1 or 2 others which really helps me get through the sessions. So thank you very much for entering me.
Thanks John and I'm so glad I can help in some way. Good luck on your journey 🙏
I really like Yew! Stunning tree and wood.
Me too!
A beautiful vase
Thanks Jeff 😃
I always like how you pause as you go and explain the process.
Thanks so much, I appreciate it 😊
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you! 😊
The wing makes the vase look interesting. It dresses up the vase nicely 😊.
I think so too 😀 all the best, Mike
I wood be amiss if I didn’t state my amazement at the imagination and craftsman skills yew display
Haha yew were doing to well but yew just had to slip it in! 😀
Dang that steady rest really is a game changer!
I know! It takes all the worries out of hollowing 😃
That turned out to be a good save with the damaged wing. The end product was very pleasing to the eye.
Thanks Stan, glad you liked it 😃
That turned out a lot better than I thought it would 🎉🎉🎉🎉 beautiful 😍
Thank you Gloria 😊
Your work with wood is beautiful! I appreciate how you stay positive through the challenges and keep working at it. I like that unique vase, and that wing has character. Great job!
Thank you very much Alice 😀
Nice to see that we can all have slips, thanks for keeping it in and showing us reality.
Always Drew, I'm in the same boat as every other turner, I make mistakes, wood splits, catches happen. If I can explain when things go right or wrong then we can all learn together. All the best, Mike
I squeaked a little when that chunk came flying out! I'm so glad the piece was still salvageable. Beautiful!
Me too!! Thanks Trish😂
Beautiful work. Glad you enjoyed your trip
Thank you very much Eric, it was a lovely holiday even with the kids 😂
You are braver than I am, without a doubt. I would have seen those cracks, and given up before I began. You produced a uniquely attractive vase. Even the "wing" works.
Thanks Dave, I think there may be a very fine line between brave and daft 😃
To reiterate Yew is for sure a great wood to turn. Such beautiful colours.
It is just a shame you can't use it for food bowls 😃
Welcome back from your vacation. Great first piece back!
Thanks my friend, it's great to be back on the lathe 😃
I'm glad you did the flared top. This a thing of beauty.
Glad you like it! 😃
Fantastic vase, I love yew. I have a lovely yew In my garden. Although beautiful, it can be harmful to the skin. I love the collar on the vase and so glad you kept it on.
Thanks Clare, they are beautiful trees and the wood is just amazing.
What a lovely chunk of yew…when I saw the catch, I thought ‘ouch, not blood again’…but it wasn’t. Glad you had a great holiday. 😃👍🏻
Haha thanks Fiona, nope no blood this time but the catch did make me jump. It them made me jump again when I started editing lol 😃
Yew know your stuff Mike, when it comes to awkward pieces of wood on your turner, yew show us how it's done once again.
More give aways Mike 😊🎉🎉🎉 yew're spoiling us with all the goodies you produce.
Thanks Charles, I am honestly so grateful for everyone who supports me I wish I could afford to do a giveaway every week. All the best, Mike
So much interesting movement going on in the figuring. Truly works with the "redesigned" wing. And love the color!
I think so too! yew is always interesting, all the best, Mike
Yew did your Yewusual great job on this one Mike. I certainly understand the need for "redesign" during a project. I have a lovely Red Oak saucer that was supposed to be a bowl.
I have a few of those pieces myself!
Haha, it's just what happens when working with wood 😃
Hi Mike
Another amazing piece
My favourite wood (yew) which can provide an awesome spectrum of colour.
I did share this admiration of wood type with my wife 27 years ago when we just started going out and I almost scared her out of a long term relationship!
I just love and share your philosophy of “marvellous mistakes” or as you put it slightly smaller pieces!
Just fabulous on so many levels
Thanks again
Thank you very much Nicholas, mistakes or accidents are just an opportunity to do something slightly different 😀
Beautiful. Being an archer I have a very soft spot for Yew
Indeed, it does make great longbows 😃
When you spun it around at 22:26 and i could see that crack, after jamming the baseball in, I was convinced the piece was going to fly apart. I had to stop and go back and look at the crack before - at 21:55 we can see the crack from the inside, so we know it goes through, and there plus other quick moments before that it looks smaller than pre-baseball. Heart stopping!
Great finished product, as usual. the wing seemed like an odd idea, but I love every time you leave a little bit of live edge somewhere; it emphasizes both the nature of wood, and the ambition with which you approach the work; get the biggest best thing you can out of it.
Thank again for your comments, I have worked with Yew a lot so had a very good idea that the crack would not effect the strength of the wood. If I had put more pressure on the ball it would have so it is a case of knowing what you can and can't get away with. All the best, Mike
Very nice. The wing brings the eye up the vase. Nicely done.
Thanks so much Doug, you are nearly at the 1000!!! Exciting times 😃
Stunning piece. Wing really adds to it. Working my way through your videos. ❤❤
Awesome! Thank you John, my earlier work is not great if you get back that far but we al have to start somewhere 😀
Congratulations on the new toy. Another nice piece Mike.
Thanks Loran, I see a few more vases in my future 😃
The yew looks terrific as usual. My heart sank when you had the catch. Nice recovery. The tall vase does look better with the wing.
Good to see the new steady rest being used. Sanding the deep vase went well, but I know it took a lot longer than we see on the video.
For large diameter holes, another option for sanding are abrasive flap wheels. Available in many grits. Easy to use with a cordless drill but you will need an extension to get deep into the work.
Well done.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, I keep meaning to make a few flap wheels up and you are right, sanding inside took a little longer lol 😃
So relaxing to watch, after a busy day!
So glad it helps, all the best, Mike 😃
Turned out beautiful. I'm glad thecrack didn't interfere.
Me too, if it has I intended to stitch it with copper wire 😀
Great job, Mike! I love these rustic pieces. They showcase the character of the wood. excellent work!
Thank you very much Ray 😁
lovely vase ! the yew wood has fabulous grain ! nice save !
Thanks Michal 😃
Love the final product the vase is striking I love the colour. Hope the move organising is going well.
Thank you! 😊
Love the new tools, and the vase is fabulous. I love the interesting wing.
Thanks so much 😀
Lovely looking vase, and it was great seeing you work through the issues the wood presented along the way.
Thanks David, that's one thing I love about turning, having to deal with problems as you go along. 😀
I've always been clumsy and knock things over so when I see top heavy vases, glasses etc I steer clear of them. I'm watching at 28.36 so hopefully your vase turns out as beautiful as your other work 😊
Thanks! I have not knocked it over yet lol
@@MikeHolton You're probably not as clumsy as I am lol
@@leonebritt4879 Haha I have my moments lol 😃
Hi Mike, again I was fascinated with the process and the execution of your turning methods. The steady rest looked well built and worked very well. What a great end result. The Danish oil enhanced the yew vase. Thank you for the video looking forward to the next one.👍
Thanks so much Roy, next video is a far simpler one but done in a very unusual way 😃
Very good, my work which is still bad is permission to learn from the experts👍👍👍👍👍
You can do it, just keep enjoying yourself
That's a nice piece. I didn't think I was going to like the wing but I do.
Love your videos.
Thanks Cathy, I think the wing may turn into a bit of a marmite situation 😃
You welcome back home.. I am watching your video from my holiday location 😊.. you made a special piece again.. 👍 really love to see you grow time by time.. I will try to keep up😅😉
Thank you so much 😀 and enjoy your holiday 😂
Very wonderful as always. Clever, man, craftsmen. 😊
Thank you very much Paul, your good lady has already had her eye on it lol 😃
Which eye?
You found within a lovely vase, with both your good eyes 👀
Good save Mike, that looks well. Great job!
Thanks my friend 👍
Hello Mike, Glad you had a good holiday and are back to turning.
My sister is an interior designer who always says “It is never a mistake, just a design feature”. And what a designer piece you have made out of this beautiful piece of yew. It’s almost as though the wood was telling you what to do when it turfed out that chunk of wood. To my mind, where the “gaps” in the wings are, make it look as if there is a sort of ribbon bow incorporated - you may not agree, but I like it.
Congratulations!
Hi Angela, I think your sister it right, I quite often incorporate 'design features' into my work but I call them happy accidents 🤣
@@MikeHolton Hello Mike, there is always an upside to most things, and building on these can be an absolute joy - as demonstrated here! 👌
@@Angela-en6oh thanks ☺️
It’s different but quite interesting job well done Mike
Thanks Jim 🙂
Beautiful and inspiring to persevere! Well done!
Thank you! Cheers Susannah, I don't like to give up 😃
Yew did a wonderful job
ThankYEW very much 😃
That is different - nice project Mike.
Thanks Gavin 😀
I enjoy watching your work. It makes me want to get out and try to make something myself.
You should! It really is great fun 😃
Glad you got that steady rest mate.
Me too, it's a real game changer 😃
Very beautiful vase
Thank you so much 😊
Very cool.
Thanks 😀
I love the grain on yew.
Me too Cheryl 😀
It turned out FANTASTIC. I like the height of it, it's awesome.👏🏿🌄🕊️
Thanks so much 😊
Very nice, the particular species of wood is amazing.
Thanks Michael, Yew is an amazing wood 😀
Really pretty vase. Ing is something that I'm not used to, but could like in the end.
Haha, there are a lot of people sitting on the fence on this one and I think I'm one of them 😀
Glad you had a good holiday, lovely piece of wood and nice steady rest too! 😊
Thank you Ann ☺️
Welcome back. As always another job well done.
Thanks very much Rex, it was great to be back on the lathe 😃
First...WELCOME BACK MIKE !!! As usual your work is first rate. Thanks for the tip for new turners on how to use the cutter. I will need that info when I start turning as well. I like that steady rest. He did a nice job. When you had the tool rest on the other side it reminded me of doing that on a metal lathe. What a pain THAT is on a 30 inch swing Monarch !!!
Haha I can imagine 😃, all the best my friend, Mike
The yew is lovely
Thanks Rachel 😃
I love your candid honesty throughout and the true view into the process here even with the mishap!
Thanks Sara, I just try to be as honest as I can, I'm so lucky to have such amazing people watching my word it's the very least I can do to be honest and as real as I can. 😀
Another great turning.
Thank you! Cheers Earl 😃
When that segment separated I thought it was all over..... but you recovered it beautifully...... great job Mike!
Thanks Steve, I am quite adept at recovering from mishaps, I've had plenty of practice 😃
SPOILER ALERT!😮
@@rorywallace7335 🤣
Cool 👍. The wing looked good in the end.
Thanks, I'm glad I kept it now 😃
Very beautiful, I have some yew I’m currently pondering on. Maybe it will be as beautiful as this one. 😊
Cool, yew is a stunning wood, let me know how you get on 😀
As a Bassett hound owner, I love your mascot
Haha thanks, that's Hooch 😃
Turned out great Mike I'm glad you had a good Holiday 👍 😀
Thanks so much Tim 😃
Es gibt für alles eine Lösung! Sie haben eine geniale gefunden. Gratulation 👍🏼
Ich wollte immer mit Holz arbeiten, bin aber bei Knochen "hängen" geblieben.
Auch Knochen können interessant sein! Vielen Dank, Mike
Superb as usual Mike , keep up the great great work
Thanks, will do my best 😃
I have been watching your turning video’s for a while now. I really like some of the unusual woods and finishing methods you use. Keep up the good and very interested work.
Hi Larry or Anne, I try hard to find interesting things to turn and try to create out of the ordinary items. The last thing I want is to become repetitive. All the best, Mike
This is mesmerizing. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it, all the best, Mike 😀
What a cool way to put Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2024 to bed. Nice job again!
Thanks and sleep well 😀
Very nice, I love turning yew
Me too! Thanks Adrian 😃
Nice vase.
Thank you! 😊
The wing freaked me out a little bit, but the end result was worth it. It makes me want to try an end-grain bowl with a wing so that you can see the way the colors change through the cross-section of the log. Very cool, and as always, inspiring!
Thanks Jeramiah, you are right about the cross section looking cool, it looks amazing 😃
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
Nice job! I hope the break had the desired effect!
It has and it's great to be back on the lathe 😀
Very enjoyable to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it! All the best, Mike
Another grand video Mike, hope you had a good holiday
Thanks and yes thanks we had a great time 😄
Welcome back Mike and stoked you had a great holiday.
Awesome vase.
Not so sure I would have been quite as polite as you were when it chipped lol so kudos.
Here's to the next one.
Have a great evening
Thanks Fiona, the holiday was amazing even with having the kids there 😃. The catch was annoying as I knew it could easily happen on that edge but, these things happen and I don't really let things like this get to me. I'm just here to have fun 😃, all the best and have a good evening as well. Mike
@@MikeHolton thanks for bringing us along for the fun 🙃
@@fionacrouch1732 🤗
Another nice piece! I do love yew!
Me too! Such a beautiful wood 😀
Good job 👏
Thanks again Patrick 😀
Beautiful job Mike. I don't mind at all the way that the wings turned out on this vase. I was a bit skeptical at first though.
You and me both! I nearly turned it away early one but glad I left it now 😃
Great turning!
Thanks so much David 😃
Beautiful Yew too! ;)
Haha thanks Jean 😄
The vase turned out beautifully Mike. I never would have imagined having (or keeping) the wing and I'm glad you kept it. It adds an interesting element and highlights the grain in the wood. One question I had while watching the video was if adding CA glue or resin in the cracks would have helped hold it together. Would not have made it as natural perhaps. Another excellent (and well edited) video and creative piece.
Thanks my Friend, I did consider sealing the crack and it may have helped with the catch but Yew splits naturally along it's length and in some cases like this I just let the wood be itself.
really gorgeous
Thank you! 😊
Superb as always x❤
Thank you! 😊
Great show. Your timing is perfect as I need to also turn a vase for my daughter. Keep up the good work.
Awesome! Thank you William, what wood are you going to use? 😃
Great job Mike, I love working with Yew it has to be my favorite nice to turn and a beautiful finish . Its lovely to see the grain evolve through the length of that piece
Thanks Steve, it really is, I bought a loads of these a while back and now only have one left, going to have to look for more 😃
Welcome back, Mike! Yew did it again. Great recovery from the oops.
Thanks Ted, Yew have always loved a good Yew pun 😃 . . . . every time .. 😂
@@MikeHolton I can’t help myself. LOL
@@Ted_P 🤣😂😅
I have a similar piece of white birch, but fortunately without a Crack like yours. Going to make a vase and dye the finished piece
That sounds like a great idea, send me a pic when you are done please 😀
@@MikeHoltontried to send a pic of the piece. Couldn't send it
@@dragonfiredarting6762 I meant when your finished, you can email it to me (mike@mikeholton.net) thanks 😀
Turned out well , like others i wasnt sure about the wing but end result looks good
Thanks Alex, I'm still sitting on the fence about the wing, not really sure if I like it or not lol
A nice work of art sir, great recovery. A stunning piece of wood. Thanks for sharing your hard work with us.🌿 👍👍👍👍👍
You are welcome Rob, glad you enjoyed it, all the best, Mike 😀
Simply b'yew'tiful!
Haha love the pun 😅
Beautiful piece
Thank you very much! 😃
Lovely piece of wood It Looks so nice I have just bought & used that steady & it works so well plus they well made
Regar
They are a complete game changer! So glad I have mine now 😃
I like the final product! I was not sure where you were going at first. That steady rest is a great addition.
Thanks Harold, the steady rest is a game changer of me 😃
It's a mushroom stem! I love it!
Thanks 😊
