    Hi Mike
    Another amazing piece
    My favourite wood (yew) which can provide an awesome spectrum of colour.
    I did share this admiration of wood type with my wife 27 years ago when we just started going out and I almost scared her out of a long term relationship!
    I just love and share your philosophy of “marvellous mistakes” or as you put it slightly smaller pieces!
    Just fabulous on so many levels
    Thanks again

  • @VynceMontgomery

    When you spun it around at 22:26 and i could see that crack, after jamming the baseball in, I was convinced the piece was going to fly apart. I had to stop and go back and look at the crack before - at 21:55 we can see the crack from the inside, so we know it goes through, and there plus other quick moments before that it looks smaller than pre-baseball. Heart stopping!
    Great finished product, as usual. the wing seemed like an odd idea, but I love every time you leave a little bit of live edge somewhere; it emphasizes both the nature of wood, and the ambition with which you approach the work; get the biggest best thing you can out of it.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank again for your comments, I have worked with Yew a lot so had a very good idea that the crack would not effect the strength of the wood. If I had put more pressure on the ball it would have so it is a case of knowing what you can and can't get away with. All the best, Mike

    The yew looks terrific as usual. My heart sank when you had the catch. Nice recovery. The tall vase does look better with the wing.
    Good to see the new steady rest being used. Sanding the deep vase went well, but I know it took a lot longer than we see on the video.
    For large diameter holes, another option for sanding are abrasive flap wheels. Available in many grits. Easy to use with a cordless drill but you will need an extension to get deep into the work.
    Well done.

    Hello Mike, Glad you had a good holiday and are back to turning.
    My sister is an interior designer who always says “It is never a mistake, just a design feature”. And what a designer piece you have made out of this beautiful piece of yew. It’s almost as though the wood was telling you what to do when it turfed out that chunk of wood. To my mind, where the “gaps” in the wings are, make it look as if there is a sort of ribbon bow incorporated - you may not agree, but I like it.
    Congratulations!

    The vase turned out beautifully Mike. I never would have imagined having (or keeping) the wing and I'm glad you kept it. It adds an interesting element and highlights the grain in the wood. One question I had while watching the video was if adding CA glue or resin in the cracks would have helped hold it together. Would not have made it as natural perhaps. Another excellent (and well edited) video and creative piece.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Год назад +1

      Thanks my Friend, I did consider sealing the crack and it may have helped with the catch but Yew splits naturally along it's length and in some cases like this I just let the wood be itself.

    I have been watching your turning video’s for a while now. I really like some of the unusual woods and finishing methods you use. Keep up the good and very interested work.

      Hi Larry or Anne, I try hard to find interesting things to turn and try to create out of the ordinary items. The last thing I want is to become repetitive. All the best, Mike

    Mike, great recovery from the mishap. For me the end result is too slender and I just don't get the wing. Its broken form makes sense in context with the original blank but once turned maybe that story is lost. I am fairly well in the minority against all the other comments here and I usually go potty for everything that comes off your lathe, but this one missed the target.
    That said. This video is so informative, you probably even gave away some sacred wood turning secrets. You cracked out some really interesting new tools and pushed yourself out of your comfort zone and I enjoyed every second of what you showed us.
    Thank you for what you do.

      Thanks my friend, It is slender and not for everyone's taste which is just fine. I like it but I don't love it as much as sone of the other pieces I've turned, All the best and keep well, Mike

    Hi Mike, A lovely result and a great redesign in the face of adversity! I noticed right at the end of the film that you have magnetic strips on your workshop wall. I am thinking of getting hold of some as well and wondered whether you use them for your gouges and skews etc or just the sundry tools that were on view. My fear I suppose is that, whilst reaching for something i'll knock the next tool off and do some damage to it!

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Год назад

      Hi Mike, I don't use them for my turning tools mainly due to the fact I have to reach across to get them so it does make them easier to grab. I know a lot of people do use them for turning tools without any real problem. All the best, Mike

    Good to see you overcome the design challenges that this piece “threw” your way. You accepted them and made the necessary changes to make a stunningly good looking vase.

      Thanks Greg, Yew is steeped in history in the UK and is a beautiful wood to turn, it's not food safe so you can't make a fruit bowl from it, but it's most famous for being the wood they used to make longbows from in the middle ages.
