Yah it depends, some people like the scallop look, some people like more diffused light. I don’t have particular preference, but installing them at the wood beam is the easiest way for me :)
I think it looks good, it's all personal preference. You don't get much light against the house with them farther out especially in the areas that are open.
Officially you cannot splice it, but technically you can do it on your own at the risk of voiding the warranty. There are 3 strands in the cable, 1 positive power, 1 negative power, 1 data, just need to carefully match them.
another con to add would be not syncable with music. :(
