Thank you for your review. I am having big pleasure listening you. It is good that your are showing the power consumption, as it is not common for most tech observers. Maybe here also would be good to add few words about the efficiency for your power supply, as final power consumption is very dependent of PSU. Some less experienced viewers could take it wrong thinking that values of power consumption you show is what only CPU and mobo use, missing the fact that PSU itself can consume from 5% to 40% of power. And due to this real CPU`s TDP under max load actually corresponds to official spec. paper.
Yea, I'm genuinely happy with the performance I'm seeing, but yea I was working on LGA 775 and Phenom II projects, so I guess I got carried away a little bit and lacking comparison with modern CPUs.
Thank you for the great video Phil!! Would you recommend this current setup for a power efficient freenas/plex server build, or one of the other versions of this board with a lower TDP processor?
Those Xeons are impressive for their age. My i5-4690k is starting to show its age in some newer titles. Stuff like DOOM (2016) and Forza are fine, though. The Vulkan and DX12 APIs seem to push my GPU harder and the 4 core CPU is still good enough @4.1Ghz. Where the 4 cores really struggle are in Ubisoft open-world games like Watchdogs 2. It gets choked on geometry draw-calls. To hit 60fps consistently, I have to lower the geometry settings a notch or two.
Necro Spencer and that extra is not that much overall. I think really, as Phil said, the value of 1356 is about cheap 6 cores and 12 threads, but not anything beyond that. Want more cores? Just get yourself a 2011 mobo, you get so much more stuff for your money and 8 cores are super affordable.
Of course, the Chinese knows how to make a compelling budget friendly motherboard to pair up old high end parts to get something quite interesting, even if quality is one of those things that is doubtful.
I am not too familiar with server sockets, but I do want to eventually build a Xeon system for both gaming and general multitasking. Which socket would you recommend? All of them seem decent enough, but I'm not sure which one is the best value in overall
32gb is so cool. You linked the ram modules right. And Wewt Battlefield 1 I happy for you. Seems everyone wants these videos. Squeezing the dollar is so much fun. I have tons of fancy hardware and i dont use it much. Save it for customers.
Once you have done all these motherboards and CPUs can you do a summary wrap up for price performance. I am mostly interested in content creation. Cheers
I'd wager the best option is still the Xeon 2689 LGA2011 Plattform. CPU is like 50$ on AliExpress, Mainboard is about 75$-90$. 8 Cores 16 Threads DDR3 ECC, you get heaps of perfomance for a really cheap price.
@@oscarl-b8870 If I had know about this before, I may would've rather bought the 2689 instead of a ryzen 1600, especially because I already had 16Gb of DDR3 From my FX Rig. Alas now it's too late.
Although what I like the most is your retro-hardware content (best content creator when it comes to retro PC !), specially Pentium III and earlier era, it is good to know a bit more on the Xeon line, which I am not that familiar with. Greetings from Uruguay !
Yea I covered so much already with Retro, and also I don't get any requests as to what people want to see. Whereas with these Xeon stuff, there is a real buzz and it's exciting!
A very demanding simulation is City Skylines, that gives any CPU's a very hard time since you can manually adjust counters in the game menu to test the heck out of the simulation and your system :)
Cities is more worried about the single thread performance still (it uses more than 1 thread but its still limited) - a fast quad runs just as good as anything with more threads.
PhilsComputerLab you don't know x5670??? It's a west mere 6core Xeon that can overclock really high. 4.5+ ghz. You do bclk overclocking on an x58 motherboard. You can buy those cpus for cheap. X5650-20 bucks max. Sometimes 10 dollars. The problem is you can't find the motherboards for cheap. Incredible deal if you can find a good motherboard.
Thanks for a wonderful video and here are some comments from my testing. I'm using the 8 core E5-2450v2 and if I stress test (prime95) the 8 cores withOUT hyperthreading; it hits the 95w tdp limit. Thus, it may be worthwhile to turn off HT for gaming. Also, it would be useful to prevent core-parking (speed throttling at idle). The difference in idle power usage for me was 15.5 watts with 8 cores full speed (2.9 Ghz) and 12.3 watts (8 cores but with idling). Hopefully this can help micro-stuttering as the LGA1356 chips just lack the max single thread IPC due to their limited 95W tdp max.
Basically, this board and 2430V2, but if you can spend more, or need more performance, go with LGA 2011. Do not get higher CPU than 2430V2, the value is poor.
Love your videos ! keep up the good work ! Good price performance is great, but aren't you concerned about durability ? Seems to me this isn't that of a bargain if it fries only after a few month. Not sure if we can trust the brands, even if giving a second life to theses older server processors is exiting and good for the environment.
✌️😏 for Simulation i recommend picking up both: Euro Truck Simulator & American Truck Simulator, its alot easier than a flight simulator if ur a noob 😊 🙂 some people find them relaxing, pickup a load at a shipper and then spend the day in actual time driving Over The Road, just like us real truckers ✌️😎🚛🚛🚛🚛🚛 😏 pickup a CB Radio & Whip Antenna as well if u wana get even more into it ☺️ lol .
@mctwhizz Project Cars 2 has a a free demo! So I'll be using this in future videos, there are 2 races, the second one has rain and seems to be more demanding, so that will be a good test :D
Another great video, Phil! So informative. Im just about to build a Ryzen 5 2600 system with my rx480. I would like to look into a x79/x58 system. Just to see how it performs against a midrange system of today.
Do you have any plan on making an overclocking video on the PlexHD mobo from last video? I'm on the edge of buying that board. And please compare E5-2689 to R7 1700, R5 2600, and/or i5 9400F!!! :D
Yes that's coming soon! I'll be using a 1650V2! And I don't have any such modern parts, they are quite expensive. I do need a faster GPU though, the RX 580 is not cutting it with faster CPUs, even at 720p it's bottlenecking the systems.
@@philscomputerlab Understandable, I hope you can afford a high end GPU soon. Btw why don't you monetize your videos? An ad at the beginning and the end of your videos will be fine.
Hey Phil, I've just noticed stores like WUSON on AE are selling mobo/processor/memory/cooler/etc bundles very close to some of the systems you've spec'ed out lately. What are your thoughts on these bundles? Are the Chinese RAM kits still a bit dodgy or are these a good value?
If things go to plan, I might be able to review such a bundle soon! With the RAM, so far I bought 4 kits from AE and they all work as advertised, but some RAM was modified, overclocked basically. So yea, a bit sketchy, but in terms of function, you do get working RAM.
im getting one of these boards because their cheap pretty much lol for my stepbrother however its not this board you showed in your video its a jingsha x79 board for $49 USD. i still do have a e5 2420 v2 sitting around im giving him this setup because hes running on a fx 6300 so since alot more games are using more threads thought i would give him a little upgrade thats better for core thread work flow for games and other processes in the background.
You might try some of those small heatsinks with 3m thermal tape you can get off ebay. I bought some for a 760g motherboard vrm and it worked pretty well. Just make sure it is legitimate 3m thermal tape will typically be cheaper with the tape pre applied.
@philscomputerlab just curious. Have you tried two 32GB RAM 🐏 sticks i.e 64GB to see if they are compatible? The board specs are very non specific on various Chinese / Russian sites about this board but the these Xeon’s should support higher ram it all depends if the sockets contain the required address lines...
If it's just a standard directory on the system that's locked, NTFS Access might be able to unlock it for you as well as every directory on the hard drive if you just select the entire drive. That's what I used to access things in Windows 7 but never tried on something downloaded from the Microsoft store on Windows 10.
If I'm not totally wrong with english (I'm not fluent), seemed to me that you compared termal dissipated power with the electrical power draw from PSU which is an error. Am I wrong?
I want to thank you as i have just got into older server components. I live in a good used market area for older server gear. so i have a few of these cpus kicking around and will try out some of the china new mother boards as i am tired of having what sounds like a jet taking off in my nerd cave. so the idea of a more normal cooling solutions on my servers with out doing massive mods to 1u rack mount systems is appealing.
@@philscomputerlab yes i have sniped a few of the ivy bridge based servers from a local resale outfits but in a 1u form factor servers they are still loud at idle.
I went with an X5670 ($19), with 24gb of ecc ram running in triple channel($35, used server ram, eBay auction), and a cheap used motherboard($28), but yeah, the results are pretty much the same, and less than 100 bucks. I got a nice used cooler for just $10, a 240gb ssd for $24, and now all that's left is snipping a good deal on a used RX480 8gb, the whole rig should come in just under $200. Hopefully I'll have it up and running by the end of the month. It should be able to play pretty much everything in high/ultra settings at 1080p/60+fps (except maybe PUBG, that game is just horribly unoptimized). And it'll pay for itself in video editing work. Future upgrades for the same computer: -PCIe X16 NVMe adapter and 1TB NVMe SSD(non bootable, but can be defaulted to for all programs to be installed on it, and having the video files being edited on that drive will make everything faster as well) -PCIe X4 USB 3.1 Gen2 adapter (will make getting files from the camera to the computer MUCH faster)
Hello Phil's this is very helpful video which coincides with my current plan to build using a 2420v2 cpu for this platform. I'd also like to ask you that since m2 nvme port is not running at full speed, is it possible to put a normal m2 sata ssd on the port instead? Thank you Phil for your video
@@philscomputerlab I mean there are m2 ssd with sata protocol right? Not all m2 ssd is nvme. So I'm wondering if that m2 sata ssd will be detected, I heard most motherboard with m2 nvme port will detect m2 sata ssd drives but I'm not sure and hoping you'll be willing to check since my motherboard has not yet to come.
Nice Vid. Want to try it with E5 2470 anyway. How big are the VRMs exactly? I want to mount heatsink coolers to all to this board. Even if they have aircooling i think it would run much cooler.
TDP is what your Cooler must handle and how much airflow your case needs etc, it has nothing to do with power consumption at the wall. You CAN trust the rated TDP of a component. That's why you see those power meters for sale in stores, especially in countries with high power prices. You will also notice it's warm in their houses and the heated floor is on in the laundry.
Does the motherboard or platform in general allow overclocking? While it's really enticing as a cheap multicore setup, frequencies are really low and could use an overclock.
Best channel on YT for me currently, not just the subject but the depth of coverage on the subject. Answering our questions so I really feel I am going to buy with this. I do Have 4 builds to go yet, and I need to sell at least 2 or my wife will leave me, or make me leave her and sleep on a tent. Some limitations on I/O but this is still a good deal. One thing, about 09:32 we can see you talking about RAM and the SATA ports are labelled ATA 3. Earlier you say they are only SATA 2? Not sure with the memory issues, what to do? Do I just order the RAM and accept it will probably work but not as rated or am I better getting on eBAY and going with 2nd hand DDR3. In the UK DDR3 isn’t really cheap and ECC isn’t always cheap (and tends to be even slower than 13333 often enough. Really have to place an order on this though. What I really would like to see is some SFF/ITX is that available, I would probably be happy to be a guinea pig on that as the CPU will be OK and I can always order a mATX if I hit a dud. I can face losing $60 on a gamble. This is the best YT channel I watch at the moment, can’t praise you enough.
The ports are usually labelled from 0 to 3, but yea, they are only SATA 2. It does have M.2 NVME slot for better performance. So with DDR3 registered ECC from China, I have bought 4 RAM kits, and in terms of function, they all perform to what was advertised. But some RAMs are modified, meaning they overclocked them, but I believe they do test them. I also found that most RAM locally is only 1333, but most should OC to 1600. But I've also bought 1866 RAM locally, you just got to keep looking. Before you rush out and buy 1136, do consider 2011 socket with a 2630V2 CPU. I'm working on a video comparing 1356 and 2011, and even at the budget end, 2011 makes more sense. The boards costs more, but are faster and way more features, and CPUs are cheaper.
@@philscomputerlab Yes I am going to wait, like I say I have 4 builds to do yet and I'm being quite slow about them. Just great that you do such in depth videos because I don't have the nervousness that I would have about the China thing normally. I heard about it but you explain it.
Crazy to think you can get something almost as fast as my computer now for so cheap. My e5-1650-v2, ga-x79-ud3, 16gb ram(4x4), and 980 ti hybrid aren't to much ahead of this computer.
Hello, would you be able to test this platform with the rx470D graphics card. I would like to know how the performance looks like. because I want to put together such a set.
Just found your channel. I've always been interested in not-bleeding-edge tech for the budget minded person. Hell, I'm still gaming on a 10 year old Phenom II, hahaha. Thank you for your efforts!
That's awesome! I was actually working on a FX-6300 video when I heard about these parts. And yea, they perform surprisingly well, much better than the FX!
On motherboards this small, it's good that they didn't offer triple channel memory. The extra length that the motherboard would have needed wouldn't have reached the next set of screw holes - and one of my motherboards which has that manufacturing choice flexes and creaks alarmingly when I install RAM.
Phil. Do you ever feel like we have it too good these days with all these awesome cheap and powerful hardware components ? Thanks for sharing the love.
@@philscomputerlab I've very much lowered my expectations. I actually sold my newest PC in favour of building a butt kicking system from used parts. I have no regrets. My i7 6700k rig went to a good home, I was originally going to put the money towards a Ryzen 7 3800 on release, I ended up with a Xeon E5-2687W for my older x79 system. That was the highest performance CPU officially supported on my Gigabyte GA-x79 UD3 so I pulled the trigger. It's in the mail right now. I can't wait!
@@garyhope6577 Yea it's nice to be able to sit back, let the Ryzen 3000 reviews come around. B550 boards won't be out until next year either, so I think it will be a while until the market is healthy and prices settled. Oh and never rule out Intel, they will for sure respond! More and more games are super optimized and you can put most money into a graphics card these days.
Yay! I finally got the motherboard from customs today. Have the exact same processor. Got 2x8gb 1866 sticks (funnily enough with PLEX HD stickers on them) so will see how the memory works on my motherboard as I had different accessories in the box. Also bought one of those SSD but I wanted a black SSD for the case so was limited to 360gb but that should be enough for windows and a few games. I also have a 580 and 570 I want to test so good to see what results are possible. As a fan do you happen to have a discord server for people to go to? Share pictures and different things they have found with these chinese motherboards? Again great video and look forward to seeing more from you in the future!

Just thought I would mention it in case it is something you are interested in.
@@philscomputerlab Out of interest, what do you use to record gameplay / benchmark results? I'm thinking about getting this to replace my x3470. Because I only get 40ish fps in Minecraft modded and my CPU is holding me back not my gpu (rx 560 4gb). After seeing this video I know what to do. But do you know if a lga 1156 CPU cooler would fit on a 1356 socket or would I have to get a new cooler?
Good Video But theres something that i was wondering, is there a way to limit the power consumption of the Sandy Bridge CPU in the bios because i had a few motherboards that have that feature, i know it might hurt boost clocks but i wonder if that is an option thanks.
i think its better to go with a 2011 socket and thats because you can get boards for around 80 dollars and you can get a 8 core e5 2650 v2 for around 50 dollars

I have tons of fancy hardware and i dont use it much. Save it for customers.
thank you for sharing this valuable information, keep it up with these great hardware videos, greetings from Chile
Theman703 that's what I bought, so hopefully lol
@@oscarl-b8870 If I had know about this before, I may would've rather bought the 2689 instead of a ryzen 1600, especially because I already had 16Gb of DDR3 From my FX Rig. Alas now it's too late.
@@OMGOMGOMGOGMOGMOGM I can't see how Steve from hardware unboxed can say it's only $100 extra for a ryzen system
Yes I think a longer or multi-video round-up would be good. There's a lot to take in. But it seems we hold off on this MB as it isn't the best value.
@@philscomputerlab But what about slot 2 Xeon!? ;-)
I have a question. X5670 looks better thank the xeon 2430V2 so why did you choose 1356?
I'm not familiar with that CPU, tell me more!
@@jamesjacob9632 Ah yes, well that makes it hard to recommend then.
@@jamesjacob9632 Yep, mobos can be expensive AF. Only good if you manage to stumble across cheap one.
@@philscomputerlab HUANAN , on Aliexpress , has also NEW X58 boards , for around 60 bucks ! See here : nl.aliexpress.com/item/33026618487.html
Hey, Phil great video. Any chance you could run through unlocking turbo boost on this motherboard?
Woah, It's Friday again. As always good content. Yeah you have a point to switch to lga 2011 if we want to get the 8c/16t for low cost.
Thank you! This Mobo looks good!
As always, superb work man
Thanks for a wonderful video and here are some comments from my testing.
So what cpu do your recommend? The Xeon 2470V2 if you can afford it? Or is that the one wich made your board shut off?
Basically, this board and 2430V2, but if you can spend more, or need more performance, go with LGA 2011. Do not get higher CPU than 2430V2, the value is poor.
Thanks a lot for the quick response and really interesting video!
Love your videos ! keep up the good work ! Good price performance is great, but aren't you concerned about durability ? Seems to me this isn't that of a bargain if it fries only after a few month. Not sure if we can trust the brands, even if giving a second life to theses older server processors is exiting and good for the environment.
That's why I recommend parts that go well together, consume little power and should last you a long time!
✌️😏 for Simulation i recommend picking up both: Euro Truck Simulator & American Truck Simulator, its alot easier than a flight simulator if ur a noob 😊
🙂 some people find them relaxing, pickup a load at a shipper and then spend the day in actual time driving Over The Road, just like us real truckers ✌️😎🚛🚛🚛🚛🚛

Another great video, Phil! So informative. Im just about to build a Ryzen 5 2600 system with my rx480. I would like to look into a x79/x58 system. Just to see how it performs against a midrange system of today.
The 2600 is quite powerful, you need a CPU that is unlocked, like 1650V2 and clock past 4 GHz to have a chance.
Wow very good, you always impress me, keep making more, maybe compare motherboards side by side ?😘
Yeah I'd like to see a roundup and direct side-by-side comparisons.

Do any of these cheap boards do the dual cpu thing? I'm guessing not, but thought I'd ask.
Not that I've seen, for dual Xeon action, there are LGA 2011 boards.
you can get dual sided thermal tape and then and fitful heatsink for those mosfets, it's not too hard to get these randomly together
@@philscomputerlab that's good to know, thanks for the quick reply, too!
Lga 1356 CPUs are a bit cheaper on eBay in the states if anyone's trying to save a few more bucks. The six core Xeon is going for around $35.
im getting one of these boards because their cheap pretty much lol for my stepbrother however its not this board you showed in your video its a jingsha x79 board for $49 USD. i still do have a e5 2420 v2 sitting around im giving him this setup because hes running on a fx 6300 so since alot more games are using more threads thought i would give him a little upgrade thats better for core thread work flow for games and other processes in the background.
Great Vid man, Looking forward to the LGA2011 video!
You might try some of those small heatsinks with 3m thermal tape you can get off ebay. I bought some for a 760g motherboard vrm and it worked pretty well. Just make sure it is legitimate 3m thermal tape will typically be cheaper with the tape pre applied.
Theres great flagship mobos for not very much, but its kidan hard to find those deals. Great video! that cpu is super good for the price
@philscomputerlab just curious. Have you tried two 32GB RAM 🐏 sticks i.e 64GB to see if they are compatible? The board specs are very non specific on various Chinese / Russian sites about this board but the these Xeon’s should support higher ram it all depends if the sockets contain the required address lines...
did you checked the value of dual cpu configs? the fact that you can not threw the 10c in there is a disappointment. thank you for pointing that out.
Yea there are some nice dual socket 2011 boards!
Great great job.
Am I wrong?
@ 12:45 , use enzotech mos-c1 cooler to improve vrm's cooling. 1pack: 10pcs with adhesive thermal pad, for my motherboard im using 2 packs.
If you like it cool and quiet, just get a V2 with Ivy Bridge. They are significantly less power hungry.
@@philscomputerlab yes i have sniped a few of the ivy bridge based servers from a local resale outfits but in a 1u form factor servers they are still loud at idle.
I was thinking to maybe change my L5640 x 2 to the faster X56xx model but i don't think i will benefit from it.I am using her as a storage server.
Future upgrades for the same computer:
-PCIe X16 NVMe adapter and 1TB NVMe SSD(non bootable, but can be defaulted to for all programs to be installed on it, and having the video files being edited on that drive will make everything faster as well)
-PCIe X4 USB 3.1 Gen2 adapter (will make getting files from the camera to the computer MUCH faster)
Nice! I'm curious, how does your camera interface so that it benefits from USB 3.1 Gen 2? Is that a high speed SD card reader or something else?
Hello Phil's this is very helpful video which coincides with my current plan to build using a 2420v2 cpu for this platform. I'd also like to ask you that since m2 nvme port is not running at full speed, is it possible to put a normal m2 sata ssd on the port instead? Thank you Phil for your video
Hmm, there might be adaptors, but not sure!
Hi, Can I ask something? What Heatsink sockets are compatible with LGA 1356? Thanks.
LGA 1366 CPU coolers will fit AFAIK!
Nice Vid. Want to try it with E5 2470 anyway. How big are the VRMs exactly? I want to mount heatsink coolers to all to this board. Even if they have aircooling i think it would run much cooler.
Don't do it! I urge you to go with LGA 2011 instead, check my 2nd last video! Spacing is 95mm I think
Could you please link the exact object you did buy...there is a big price mismatch from what you say in the video.
Would you recommend this CPU over FX 6300?
Yes I would!
Does the motherboard or platform in general allow overclocking? While it's really enticing as a cheap multicore setup, frequencies are really low and could use an overclock.
Xeons are locked
Good work phil!!

What do you think of the Xeon 2430L? I found it quite cheap on Taobao and its TDP is only 60W, should i really go for it? ( i only play LoL)
I would get the E5-2430L instead!
In a way yes, the used PC parts market is really healthy, if you can dial down expectations a little bit, than it's amazing value.
