I loved this video. I recently did the same thing to assemble my PC, but you are creating a doubt for me regarding software and if it is worth buying Windows 11 and Office?

In my humble opinion, if you already spend money on a good PC, then it is better to have everything legal and without any restrictions.

Pro Tip for Microcenter fans. If you are unsure about the MB bios being able to support the CPU out of the box, after you make your purchase bring them over to the tech crew there. Super friendly and they will test bench the cpu for you and also flash the bios for you if needed. You can do this after the visit but they may apply a charge, but from my experience they consider this part of the sale and will often times not charge you.
Been a Microcenter regular since the early to mid 90's and will never shop anywhere else. Super friendly and Super helpful this store has outlasted every competitor that has come in to the area, Fry's, Comp USA, you name it Microcenter has beaten them all.

Took a huge risk with doing am open box purchase of a Z790 motherboard at a local Microcenter last year. The better Z790 boards were very hard to come by early on & they had one on the better boards available but as an open box. The entire experience was excellent. They had no issue testing the board with no guarantee that I was going to purchase it. Ended up saving around $80 from the MSRP of the board if it was purchased new.

Open box deals are incredible if you search hard enough.
My local Micro Center stores usually let me test out MB/CPU/RAM bundles and other parts before I take them home. It's a nice perk for being a former service technician for them. They let me use their test PSUs and a monitor that isn't being used. I dunno any other store that is that generous. This is one of the reasons I keep coming back to their stores.

My best Microcenter find (and probably the best deal I'll get the rest of my life) was some boxes of loose parts for RPi 3 "arcades." They had 2 boxes left, missing some of the parts, but each both still had the RPi - a great value for the $15 each box was on clearance for. HOWEVER - shoutout to the management at Microcenter as each box rang up at $0.01, and they honored the price in the system. Ended up getting 2 Pi's and a bunch of tinker stuff for two cents (and not Jay's! lol)

Every PC part I've ever bought, outside of storage, has been open box from Micro Center. Maybe my locations in Chicago are just super thorough with testing post-return, but I've never had an issue with anything except one kit of memory that they were very quick and happy to swap out with a brand new kit for the same price. Can't swear by MC's Open-Box program enough

I am reminded when getting into pc's back in the early 2000's. People threw away pc's they thought were broken. Barely anything was wrong with them. One case I found had a ATI Radeon X600 XT card in a msi board with a Athlon XP 1500+ cpu.

Had to replace my old 2011 Mac laptop and went with a PC setup. We don't have Micro Centers in the PNW, but managed to get a high-end Lenovo laptop at Best Buy normally priced at $650, for more than $300 off due to it being a return.
Only thing wrong with it was a cosmetic nick on one corner. Otherwise, it's been excellent.
Thanks for putting videos like this together, because there are definite deals to be found, but it's key to know what to look for and look out for.

For example, I bought a 3070 right before the 4070 cards came out. It was way cheaper and it still runs amazing a year and a half later

Not sure but I think that once a returned item sits on a shelf with no buyers for so long, the distributor/store either sends the item back and gets a credit on a future order, and then the item gets donated to a charity organization and it gets written off for tax purposes. This is what I remember many years ago managing a national auto repair shop.

My experience isn't brick and mortar per se, but my current pc was a pre-built full MSI build (MSI case, gpu, mobo, AIO, psu) 14700KF + RTX 4070 + 32 GB DDR5 RAM from MSI's Amazon store that was returned that I got in mid January for $1,500 that was $300-500 cheaper than brand new (depending where you bought it at the time) and I've had zero issues with it.
Also, another reason people return stuff is because they've found a better deal elsewhere or decided they wanted a more powerful system.

I totally relate to this video. I visit Micro Center almost every other day for tracking clearance items and separating the wheat from the chaff. Open box items can offer great deals, but the biggest caveat is that you should test thoroughly and carefully, and not everyone has the resources or know-how to do so themselves.
I recently picked up a Gigabyte AERO RTX 4080 Super that has exchanged more owners than it was tested by the service department, and it even had a description saying "INCOMPLETE: GPU ONLY - BURNT SMELL FROM GPU". It was an electrical fire waiting to happen, and I'm kinda proud that I kept this from falling in the hands of another customer. I tried testing the graphics card at home and thanks to a CyberPower UPS and a Seasonic PSU, I only experienced short power surges each time I pressed the power button on my test system. I brought it to the service department the next day. Guess what happened: it popped on their test bench and orange flames spewed out the side of the graphics card. I am so glad that I didn't have to deal with the smoke and the burnt electronics aroma at home.

My parents have two pcs one of them on an ancient amd fx apu with a xfx 270x that is all second hand except for the psu and its till runing strong over 10 years later. My current system has evay evga 3090 hybrid and my wive’s is a evga 3080ti hybrid and we have had no issues and i got them way below msrp. I even built a htpc my mother killed by dropping it that ran on the last generation of FX amd apus and had a 6gb evga 1060 mini all second hand built.

I remember a few years ago I bought a 2080 ti that was water blocked. Then I realized the fluid gaming case I bought was one of those EK aluminum setups. I took the GPU back I never even opened it they opened it and marked it as open box. So I can attest to a lot of the open box items are brand new someone just returned it.

Even a quick Phil montage of a build would've been nice to see even if the video is a little longer. I enjoy watching the actual build 😂

when I built my first rig this is how I bought my first ever Mechanical keyboard. I searched for one I liked at the time (because in shooter games with membrane I was so bad) and I saw one from Razer, and the open box one was half the price because the box was damaged, then as a slimy MoFo, I checked the recent negative reviews and guess what, there was one a week old review saying: "it is too loud, my parents always wake up when I game at night". I laughed my ass off and ordered it. 8 years later it's still working, and guess what! nobody is woken up by it. partly because I live alone.

I don't know how it's looking in the States, but in Canada I managed to find a used 3070 gaming x trio that was basically brand new, from a marketplace custom builder, for 350$ CAD (255$ US). Because of the economic squeeze, the guy told me he's struggling to sell the builds he did last Xmas, and so he's selling parts individually. I bought all new otherwise: 12700k, z790, 2x32gb ddr5, 500gb crucial p3+, 750 watts gold modular, peerless assassin 120 se, dumped all that into a good old Cougar mx330, and added 3 fans. No glass panel, no RGB (even turned off the GPU), just a solid bang for the loonie workstation with some headroom. Total cost with taxes was below 1500$ CAD, so about 1100$ USD. Saving big on the GPU goes a long way!

If the red connectors are the only thing: you can take a sharpie and color them black, or save up a bit and buy replacement cables some day ;)

I buy so much stuff open box from microcenter it's crazy. I almost never buy anything that isn't discounted. It's great if you aren't in a hurry and can wait for someone to return the exact thing you want. I will say though. Whatever microcenter you went to it is WAY more stocked on open box that the one near me. I was there yesterday browsing the open box and they had only 15-20 motherboards. The place you were at looked like it had more open box that my store has new. That was crazy

Microcenter: Man, we've got a lot of open box motherboards to get rid of.
Jay: Hey, MC, got any video ideas?
    MC: 😁

With the money you've saved you can buy a sharpie and sort out those red plugs :)
Also I returned a BeQuiet Air cooler once myself, because there wasn't enough ram clearance for the ram I had, so I switched to Water Cooling and never looked back. But there was nothing wrong with the Air Cooler, so someone would have got a bargain here in the UK :)

Before I watch the video I say yes! Absolutely! I got a Z690 Edge wifi for $80 usd regular like $260? All it was missing was the wifi antenna!
Edit: I went in for a new NVME drive and saw that deal and bundled a 12900k with it and also got an AIO and new PSU! Almost walked out with a new pc just looking for a drive!

I picked up an open box 5500XT 8GB in May 2021. I had gone in for a 5900X and left with a GPU also. I had everyone in line asking me where I found it.
That said, it was brokenish. It would display but used the default Windows driver. Wouldn't load the AMD driver. ASUS replaced it with a working card.

I just upgraded my PC to the AM5 platform, and half of it uses open box items; $160 Aorus Elite AX Ice motherboard, $160 6400 CL32 Corsair RGB 64GB DDR5, $100 1000w Corsair SFX PSU, $60 Gen 4 1TB NVMe. Paired it with a new $280 7900X3D. I've had good luck with the Amazon Warehouse deals; just try to go with the best condition one with original packaging, if there's multiple options.

I'm curious what you do with all the random systems you build, do you sell them, donate them, etc?
