Nice video and thank you for linking my tutorial! One thing about this particular X99Z V102 motherboard: with the stock BIOS, the clear CMOS jumper does not work, and if you screw up the BIOS settings the motherboard bricks itself.
I love these random AliExpress bundle videos. It's really nice to know which ones are worth picking up... I'm always building systems for people who have little to no budget so these reviews are invaluable :) Thanks, Phil!
cryengine games are usually shitty and has lots of frametime issue, even crysis 3 today doesn't run amazing on some high end ryzen and intel cpu, welcome to the jungle can destroy any 4 core even tho 2013 was still 4 core era, even some 4 core 8 thread cpu struggle to give better frametime, kingdom come deliverance is the best example you need idk may be 10ghz cpu to get stable fps cause at 1080p no matter which cpu you use you cant get rid off stutters and odd framespike
Not entirely true, Crysis was released back in 2007. By then Netburst was seen as a failure and the first consumer dual core processors had been on the market for more than two years. So the writing was on the wall, more threads was the way to go.
Fortunately I've been able to acquire modern hardware so things work for the most part. But I gotta say, I truly miss the thrill of making a several gens older system shine and kick ass in the modern days. I've always loved the 775/771 platform. Maybe I'll get back to that later this year.
these X99Z V102 boards have a weak M-Key solders for M.2 SATA and M.2 NVME ports. mine literally fell off hence losing the said slots. although they are legit quad channel boards bios is as basic you can get but workable nonetheless. the USB 3 header is also flimsy. VRM is also toasty for my case
Hey phil thanks for all the info about the e5 1650 v2 and x79 combo, my b365m gigabyte motherboard refused to boot into m.2 or any sata drives today, so I was forced to use the x79/1650v2, and with your tutorial, I managed to overclocked it to a stable all core 4.1ghz, and memory at 1866mhz.
with Haswell / v3 Xeons you can also usually undervolt, from XTU to get much better efficiency, very good to reduce stress on VRM , Power Supply and reduce noise and cost of operation
To show how powerful the Xeon processors are I have an X79 motherboard I bought after watching your channel and I got a 10 core E5-2658 v2 with a single core turbo speed of 3Ghz and a base speed of 2.4Ghz. Thing is you almost never get 3Ghz so I just went to the BIOS and set it to single core and rebooted, and right enough I got 3Ghz, I then got side tracked and forgot it was running on 1 core, and TBH I'm hard pressed to spot the difference, I am only running Chrome, but it's still able to open numerous tabs and play 1080P youtube videos, saying that Chrome is pretty resource intensify these days. But I could see myself getting an X99 system, I have been really pleased with my X79 one, and it's mad to be able to get a 10 core 3Ghz processor that was nearly $2000 a few years back for £70, the V3 processors are going to be a bit more pricey, but give it a couple of years and they will go down, anyway great Video like usual Phil, thanks.

If I had to do it again, I would go for the package deal and save $100. Nevertheless, this platform is a BEAST for the money. CB R15 all core score = 1830. @Ben T. I know, they are such good value, £70 was probably quite high, as you can get really good processors for a lot less but I was looking for a sweet spot of cores and speed, I have my old GTX 970 in it it.
Not really, I got an E5-1650v3 on Aliexpress a few weeks ago, and with the right OC in the BIOS (4.4ghz all cores, 4.2uncore) it has basically equal performance to my 9750h laptop CPU which I undervolted and replaced the thermal paste on. The 1650v3 is basically a 5820k so it's a pretty fair comparison. In 2019 I got the machinist X99 and BIOS-modded it with E5-2620v3 and it was quite a bit slower than 1650v3, more like a 4790k type performance, but with more threads.

I know it had an enthusiastic audience on forums, but I felt 5820K was overlooked despite being very arguably the best buy of its time. The major downside was the rough launch of X99, but the processor was still a good buy a year later. It was obvious even then that we'd eventually be moving past 4 cores. Despite being a part from 2014, the 5820K probably has a few years of useful life left. It's like the Secret Sandy Bridge no one talks about. I am also running a Xeon 2678 V3 with 32 GB DDR3-ECC RAM now on an Huananzhi X99-TF and I am so pleased with it that I sold my Ryzen 2600 and B450 Tomahawk. With my Vega 56 I got better performance in the games I care, 3.3 Ghz on 12 Cores, a single-thread speed of a Ryzen 1700 and multi-core speed of a Ryzen 3700X. And that for the money I sold the 2600/B450 combo for. If I take the RAM into account, the value is even better (got it for 45 EUR, 58k writes in AIDA with a latency of about 68,4 ns @ 1866 Mhz, 1.5V and tight timings). :) Too bad that Intel locked down most of its Xeons, overclocking them even beyond the Turbo Boost Unlock would have been a treat.
@@NJ-bh7yk At least in my own game testing (BF1 - FHD, Ultra, with Vega 56 - 133 fps vs 123 fps).) I did also test Company of Heroes 2 which is quite old and doesn't make use of that many cores, it has practically the same performance (even better if I use DXVK which is a Vulkan wrapper which can be used even on Windows). That is with the Turbo Boost Unlock enabled and both systems tweaked for maximum performance (disabled security options incl. spectre/meltdown, mds, high performance mode, tight RAM settings etc.). My Ryzen 2600 was a very bad sample which was unstable above 3.8 Ghz. You can also find some russian videos with benchmarks comparing the 3600, 2600 and Xeon 2678 v3 - the 3600 is quite a bit ahead, especially with the minimums, but the 2600 and 2678 V3 are similar in gaming while the Xeon is miles better in everything which makes good use of many cores. Value wise the Xeon is far better if you can get cheap DDR3-ECC-RAM. There are chinese X99 boards with DDR3 support for around 70 - 95 EUR (I'd recommend to go with the Huananzhi X99-TF, T8 or the Jingsha X99 DDR3 quad channel RAM model).

an i7 extreme is better for gaming and overclocking, if you can find a good deal, I have a 4820k running at 4.3 GHz, didn't have any of the issues people have when overclocking xeons on x79, cost me 60GBP on ebay,
Even though these boards are new, they are built from repurposed parts. At least the chipset itself, sometimes also other ICs I've heard. You don't have to worry about it though, chips are almost never the thing that break when a computer stops working
Wouter Verbruggen I’ve been using the x79 stuff in my office, 6 PCs used CPUs, ram and various used nvidia 980/970 and amid 280x. I took apart all the GPUs cleaned them and added new paste, and I put in cheap Chinese all in one liquid cooling. No issues, they are absolute champs
Yay! Been waiting for months on this video, ever since I've noticed¨2011v3 boards coming out. Without the overclock, that CPU is pretty much on par in Cinebench to my 3770k at 4.2GHz, but with overclock it is in a different league. Would love to eventually tinker with it myself. As always, great video.

Always interesting to see, but the value of all of these xeon systems is quite terrible. B450 motherboards are cheap and don't have the issues that plague the Chinese motherboards, like the lack of c states and sleep mode.
As mentioned, sleep mode works fine on this motherboard. We will take a look at a 8-Core CPU soon, this might be interesting for those seeking higher threaded performance.
Finally,a cooler compatible with the lga 2011 v3 socket. Now I can build an x99 system without having to worry about it not being compatible with the socket. Although, the ram I found may be incompatible. I´m sure that if I put 2400mhz ram with a xeon cpu that only supports 1866,the ram won´t run at the slower speed from the cpu,am I right?
I used 2400 RAM with this platform, it will just run at 1866 :) In fact I tested all my sticks, even 3200 RAM, but that one has XMP profile. They all worked. They all have RAM modules on one side only.
How many Xeons (if any) are redundant when you take their power consumption into account? How about when you consider features on more modern chips? I'm asking because I'm ignorant about modern developments in chips.
Question regarding the regular socket LGA 2011. I found a rather interesting CPU on my local marketplace. It's a Xeon E7-8893 v2 running at 3.40GHz with 3.70GHz turbo. It's a 6 core 12 threaded cpu with 37.5MB of L3 cache and a tdp of 155 watts. And the interesting part is, it's socket LGA 2011... And it costs €68,- Now my question is, since it has socket 2011, will it run on a Chinese socket 2011 motherboard? I would say yes because it's socket 2011 but the cpu has a bigger heatspreader then, let's say an E5-2689. Would it be interesting for me to buy this thing and just give it a shot?
Least your AliExpress orders come through. I placed an order for a motherboard and cooler back in April and its still not made it to the UK. Stuck on same tracking status now for 2 months and AliExpress say it could take up to 180 days for delivery!! :o
the x99 is good but all the neat processors seem to be priced quite a bit higher over the x79 boards. ive also noticed some of the newer x79 boards have solved problems they used to have.
Yes I'm seeing the same. I wish the X79 has a Turbo Boost Hack. My heart still beats for X79 more, the value is just better. And server DDR3 RAM still super cheap. You can a lot of cores for little money, but the low clock speed hurts.
@@philscomputerlab i had a spare e5-2687w that i won in an ebay auction lot and it wasnt until i saw your x79 videos that i gave this platform a try. its 3.1ghz and it turbos to 3.8ghz at 8 cores - 16 threads. it has done tremendously well in my end. Also getting 64gb ddr3 ecc on ebay for super cheap was amazing. there are similar processors that can be netted on aliexpress for 50 dollars or cheaper which is really nice. Since you took the time to read my comment i wanted to say thank you for what you do. the Xeon platform rocks!
Thanks for the video. It's not a bad combo for the price. Thankfully the TDP on that CPU isn't too high. Since you said the VRM's get pretty toasty with the chip you were using I'd have some concerns if you tried to use that board with a Xeon that had a TDP of 120 watts or higher which most of the 8 and higher core count V3 chips have. Good to know everything on the board worked as advertised!
We're starting to see software that requires newer processors. 2 that come to mind are Zoom, which won't do virtual backgrounds without a greenscreen unless you have a newer supported processor, and MS Flight Simulator 2020. That's going to mean living with restrictions if you go with these setups. Might be totally acceptable for some. It's not for me.
With VRM cooling a sunflower style cooler or a downdraft cooler could help with bringing down those VRM temps. Very good performance for a Haswell based Xeon stock and with the Multicore enhancement mod enabled. My 4790K + Asus Z97 Pro board has multicore enhancement feature and it is enabled by default and it does the same thing it boosts all cores to the max turbo boost. Also finally a platform where you could use your RX5700 card it has been a while since you could use that card.
Loving your Xeon videos Phil. I am currently rocking a E5-2667v2 with 32gb & a Rx570 as my 2nd system, it's a really good and very quiet machine that barely hits 58-60c when I run prime95 for an hour. I will admit I mainly run on my 3700X these days because I like the speed but I appreciate my X79 board for being the old faithful that just gets on with it without complaint
That's not brand new mobo. The chipset/PCH is taken from existing (probably dead) board, because these Chinese manufactures can't buy chipsets from Intel directly. Therefore, you have no idea how long the board will last - 10 years? 5 years? 3 days? Nothing's impossible.
The E5-2678V3 (12C/24T, will TU to 3.2Ghz all cores) is now costing about US$85 on AliEx!!!!! To avoid 0.1% low FPS stuttering in hi 1080P, go with 32GB of RAM. Cheapest RAM config, provided 4 channel capable X99 motherboard, is R-EEC 1333 DDR3 server ram. See Miyconst for RAM configuration comparisons (DDR4 desktop versus DDR3 desktop and server). Bottom line, tight timings tend to perform better than going for more expensive hi frequency RAM with looser timings.
I bought a similar motherboard, and 32gb DDR4 2400, and will be using my Xeon E5-2660 V3, just waiting on the CPU cooler, will test it and let you know, many thanks for this video I will be using the bios unlocking trick you showed.
Still run a 4930K here, at 4.5 over all 6/12 (top end, but turbo and scaling is still going too) .... comes out ahead of this Haswell by quite a margin, Ivy-E mind you. Also with native USB 3.0, sata 3, takes a mod to boot from NVME via PCI E adapter card, as the Aurora R4 mobo / platform I use this with doesn't have a slot for that on the board. But it can be done. Good outweighs the bad really to be honest... It's paired with a 2070 at the moment, but has run with a 2070 super and a 2080... able to push them no problem. I find that seeking out specific machines is the way to go... FInd a platform that you like, and seek out the good hardware. I'm sure these boards are good for some folks and all, but you can usually find some decent, desirable, better bios options, etc in previous gen higher end hardware. Usually those xeons do come in cheaper though, usually. Though if you look, you can usually find some kind of good deal on a superior cpu like the 4930k or 4960k... or any k or x series of various worthwhile generation. They do get weak past Haswell though. . . the bang for buck. Of course you can get great performance going quite new and expensive. But getting just as good out of specific, choice hardware of the past... for FAR less money... is always best. I mean, this 4930K will passmark @ 15XXX. . . Why on earth buy something brand new for far more, that plays exactly in the same realm? With the only benefit being a smaller process size, less power usage, and maybe some additional intangible, non beneficial "pros".
@PhilsComputerLab With these boards and CPU's and ECC ram, you will greatly benefit, if you use Windows 10 pro for Workstations, because it has full support for all advanced stability and performance of Xeon CPU's, above and beyond normal Windows 10 pro, and Windows 10 Pro for Workstations can make better advantage of ECC memory, compared to normal Windows 10 pro.
Very vurious about a 1650 v3 or v4 with the modified bios vs x79 1650v2 with an overclock. Does IPC beat out the potentially higher clock depending which X79 mobo from these chinese mobo manufactures. I've seen 4.1-4.2ghz on some of these x79 boards. Love your content! Keep it up!
Anyone else had trouble installing Windows 10 from a USB 3.0 drive to a NvME M.2 drive? Initially boots into Windows installation process but then asks for media, Hard Drive or USB driver. Should I be using a USB 2.0 drive to install from?
The platform as a whole is great. The Aliexpress motherboards are the main *potential* weak point. I say potential, but in my case it was actual - my AliExpress X79 board lasted about 6 hours of gentle running time before spontaneous death. Others like Thom Higgins below have experienced similar breakdowns in this class of motherboard. After all, "this seems like unbelievably good value!" does generally come hand-in-hand with certain inverse realities, if you know what I mean. The Xeons and RAM in these bundles are probably fine because, unlike the motherboards, they were completely manufactured by the original high-tier companies (Intel, Samsung, etc). With the motherboards however, lack of consistency and lack of top-tier quality control are the potential pitfalls. To quote one of the AliExpress motherboard pages themselves: "The motherboard chips have difference band chips, because of the different product batches,we will send the goods by random, please refer to the actual product". That is to say, you will *never know* in advance exactly which "batch" of motherboard you will receive - whether it is going to be "the good one like Phil got", or if their next slightly-different batch has started rolling off the assembly line since then, with perhaps it's own unique set of vagaries and, potentially, issues. For myself, I can only say that after the failure of X79 Board Number One, I'm now tossing up whether or not to chance throwing the dice on *another* AliExpress motherboard, or to just sell the now-homeless 12-core Xeon and large chunks of ECC RAM I now have.....
In BIOS of the chinese x99 Boards activate: Numa, COD (cluster on die) 10 core and more needed, IOAT. You will get a bump on memory bandwidth and near 25% better L3 Cache Latency.
Just fyi, chokes (inductors) don't really create enough heat to really matter, what heat you're seeing is probably spillover from the vregs located under the heatsink. It's bound to happen with components located so close together. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a sign of poor vreg cooling either. Those things are normally rated to operate at high temperatures.
Great video. Would an i7 5th gen, such as he 6 core/12 thread i7-5820k or i7-5930k work on these boards. With the higher boost would that solve some of the cpu bottlenecking issues, particularly if these cpu can be overclocked from their stock turbo of 3.5 & 3.7ghz respectively to something like .4.2-4.5ghz ?
hey!!, without oc, do you recommend this cpu vs the x79 2630v2 which runs at 2.9, and do you think the 2620 v3 at stock speed if viable for games for at leasy. lets say 3 years? only stock speed :) thanks
These Aliexpress bundles are awesome as long as you are not too concern about heat and power. With that price who cares about future upgrade path? You are focusing on the GPU and the CPU / MB / DDR bundle is just to support the GPU anyways.

Interesting, that's good to know, thank you!
@Mr Guru nailed it
I love these random AliExpress bundle videos. It's really nice to know which ones are worth picking up... I'm always building systems for people who have little to no budget so these reviews are invaluable :) Thanks, Phil!

crysis is not un-optimized, it's just that the devs expected you to have a 7Ghz single core CPU by now.
yeah, that's their mistake
lol
cryengine games are usually shitty and has lots of frametime issue, even crysis 3 today doesn't run amazing on some high end ryzen and intel cpu, welcome to the jungle can destroy any 4 core even tho 2013 was still 4 core era, even some 4 core 8 thread cpu struggle to give better frametime, kingdom come deliverance is the best example you need idk may be 10ghz cpu to get stable fps cause at 1080p no matter which cpu you use you cant get rid off stutters and odd framespike
Well that means it's still not optimized duhhhh...not optimized for current cpu
Not entirely true, Crysis was released back in 2007. By then Netburst was seen as a failure and the first consumer dual core processors had been on the market for more than two years. So the writing was on the wall, more threads was the way to go.
It's nice that they finally got around to putting SATA3 ports on these boards.
To be fair, X79 does have M.2 NVME and at least one SATA 3 port :)
It's just that Haswell chipsets have those built in
Coincidentally enough, I also bought this motherboard bundle and it comes the day Phil uploaded this video!
Fortunately I've been able to acquire modern hardware so things work for the most part. But I gotta say, I truly miss the thrill of making a several gens older system shine and kick ass in the modern days. I've always loved the 775/771 platform. Maybe I'll get back to that later this year.
I'm with you bro!!

these X99Z V102 boards have a weak M-Key solders for M.2 SATA and M.2 NVME ports. mine literally fell off hence losing the said slots. although they are legit quad channel boards bios is as basic you can get but workable nonetheless. the USB 3 header is also flimsy.
With this I got 234 fps in minecraft medium settings
with Haswell / v3 Xeons you can also usually undervolt, from XTU to get much better efficiency, very good to reduce stress on VRM , Power Supply and reduce noise and cost of operation
Good tip! I didn't try XTU this time.
Oh. Oh no, you're tempting me...
Give in to the Xeon
Wolfenstein the new colossus, I got 120 FPS on gtx 1060 ultra settings.

I am running E5-2678V3 with all 12 Cores/24 Threads at 3.2GHz. CPU cost me $101 at the time. I spent $99 for the HuananZhi X99TF. I also spent $120 +$30 shipping on eBay (Bid, 2 months ago) for 4 x 8GB of Mushkin Redline DDR3 1833 non EEC RAM. If I had to do it again, I would go for the package deal and save $100. Nevertheless, this platform is a BEAST for the money. CB R15 all core score = 1830. Amazed how cool this rig runs compared to my X79 (ASUS P9X79 Pro) E5-1680V2 (4.2 Ghz all core) daily driver. I only spent $28 for a 6 pipe SnowMan dual/120mm RGB fan CPU cooler for this E5-2678V3. Works like a charm. VRM's are also cool; then again, the VRM has a dual min-fan active cooler on the X99TF motherboard.
@Ben T. I know, they are such good value, £70 was probably quite high, as you can get really good processors for a lot less but I was looking for a sweet spot of cores and speed, I have my old GTX 970 in it it.
Oh no! My I7-5820K is now officially a "vintage" CPU! 😱

By the time people started figuring it out, Intel had already replaced it with the overpriced 6800K which didn't really perform any better.
@@dycedargselderbrother5353 The Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition's from the Skylake 6XXX series were really overpriced, at the time AMD had no counter to it and so Intel could charge what it wanted because the alternatives where either Intel Xeon's or much more expensive IBM POWER/ARM-based CPU's which had limited desktop application support for most lower end workstation user tasks.

I am also running a Xeon 2678 V3 with 32 GB DDR3-ECC RAM now on an Huananzhi X99-TF and I am so pleased with it that I sold my Ryzen 2600 and B450 Tomahawk. Always interesting to see, but the value of all of these xeon systems is quite terrible. B450 motherboards are cheap and don't have the issues that plague the Chinese motherboards, like the lack of c states and sleep mode.
I've heard the lack of sleep mode in them but what's c state?
C states are low power modes

Now my question is, since it has socket 2011, will it run on a Chinese socket 2011 motherboard?
I would say yes because it's socket 2011 but the cpu has a bigger heatspreader then, let's say an E5-2689.
Would it be interesting for me to buy this thing and just give it a shot?

Thanks for the video. It's not a bad combo for the price. Thankfully the TDP on that CPU isn't too high. Since you said the VRM's get pretty toasty with the chip you were using I'd have some concerns if you tried to use that board with a Xeon that had a TDP of 120 watts or higher which most of the 8 and higher core count V3 chips have. Good to know everything on the board worked as advertised!
is better using pad than paste for cpu n heatsink ?
It works longer doesn't dry up. I use it because I swap parts a lot, so less messy and not wasting paste.

Can you live stream on 1080p 60fps using x264 on Facebook using that platform?
Not worth it by a mile man. You’ll do much better building with a 3100 or 3300X for the same money. Even a 2600 is great compared to this CPU.
The Price has gone down drastically by like $100!
Intel Xeon X5670 LGA1366 & 24GB DDR3, all stock, Cinebench R15: 739cb.
These Aliexpress bundles are awesome as long as you are not too concern about heat and power. With that price who cares about future upgrade path? You are focusing on the GPU and the CPU / MB / DDR bundle is just to support the GPU anyways.
Really loving your content. Most useful information regarding these boards and Xeon cards especially here in the Philippines !!!
I have a question, some motherboard claim to be Mini-ATX, and that form factor doesn't exist, aliexpress Mini-ATX is the same as Mini-ITX? i wanna build a mini-itx xeon build but dunno if i can buy a motherboard for it
Only one very important question, what size is the motherboard? It looks like micro ATX but idk. Please help
Hi Phil, I just saw an I7-5775c on Aliexpress are thos Legit or when can you check on that? hopefully soon its under a $100.
i love the v3 platform so much :) i am by no means an intel fan i actually hate them as a company but the server boards ae great :
Seeing as the shipping is taking months and months from AliExpress, I've stopped buying altogether from there (things have been taking 3 months + recently). There were a few things I was considering getting, but by the time they arrive I will have moved on to other projects lol..
I inherited an E5-2687W-V3 with 10/20 cores running at 3.1/3.5 Ghz - wonder if that would work on this board...
if your FPS is higher than your refresh rate, your display will not be
able to display all of the frames your computer is producing.
I forget Ubisoft games even exist. They've kinda raped their formula a bit much for my taste.
Is there any chance you could make a video for cheap PC build for emulator purpose? Want to know some old parts but with strong single core performance.
better go with a 1650v2 for in game perf theses 2620v3 are pretty slow for some modern games sadly but if you mostly do light rendering and else like light tasks yeah it will work fine
Does it support quad channel memory? Ah yes, checked and it does, nice, my other x99 micro-atx system only has 2 slots and only supports dual channel
Does WinXP work with X99, or does it give the dreaded ACPI BSOD?
for a simple gaming computer for old games or most new games its quite ok. The formfactor is small enough to allow a small build aswell. These times i wish i did have the money to buy it :/
lol i have e5 2680 and 1660 and apex run better fps /60 fps u can get on i5 4460 or i7 2600
Hmm. That looks like it might be a decent platform to make an inexpensive home server out of.
Matthew Hill there is a tiny ant board with 2 2011 sockets with support for the v1/v2 E5’s. I got a bunch to build a k8 cluster, the boards were sub $100
Depending on what you plan to use the server for, some of the micro systems from HP, Dell or Lenovo might be an idea to consider. Tiny, frugal with power but enough performance for most any task. But obviously lacking space for more than one drive. But as a simple but high-performing NAS, firewall, router, torrent machine etc they could work really well. And they can be found on the used market dirt cheap.
What about e5 2640 v3 and measuring overheating of board radiator?
these kits usually go for 120 usd + 19.79 usd shipping and come with full atx mobo and wifi card that kit is overpriced my friend
and for 229 you can get the E5 2679v3 with 32 gigs of 2400 ddr4 ram
A full package (CPU, Motherboard, 32GB REEC) for $249. delivered ::::: HUANANZHI X99 X99-TF motherboard set with Xeon E5 2678 V3 LGA2011-3 + 4pcs 8GB = 32GB PC3 12800R RAM 1600MHz DDR3 ECC REG memory. Great deal IMO!!!!
