Does a recovery partition count? I have followed your video transferring my system reserved file into the same disk as my OS but now I have four partitions: My OS Drive, another usable partition, my system reserved, and recovery drive. Is this the reason why my conversion won't work?
Came here after a long struggle to convert from legacy to uefi and finally found the correct video. Thanks man it helped me to change to uefi. This video will be helpful to a lot of people now that Windows 11 is a thing.
@@animeshmishra8285 I used AOMEI partition to convert disk to gpt I got the pro version for free buy a youtube exploit video then I watched some hp laptop videos with my bios on how to change to uefi and enable secure boot.
i did it the hard way, too. There is a program offered for no cost @ Paragon.. Admin Command Prompt- mbr2gpt /convert /allowfullos did it for this OptiPlex 9010 PC (after a few checks like disc validation). So far so good, anyway.
Pretty good explanation. Thank you so much. I didn't know that the details were right in from of my eyes. I missed the point that the MBR disk had a logical volume in my scenario. So I copied the data to the OS partition, deleted the logical partition and made sure that I only had 3 partitions. Tried converting again and boom! Converted successfully.
This helped me somewhat. The error was "Disk layout validation failed for disk 0". Had to shrink by only 1MB then it finally agreed to do the convertion
The UEFI standard has been around from somewhere in the 2005/2010 period, so "if your machine is 8 to 10 years old" in 2019, there is a good chance it has UEFI.
My 1st gen i7 and 4th gen i5 both have UEFI options. First gen i7 is on a Dell precision M4500 laptop and my I-5 was on a MSI Z87-G45 motherboard. Both of them support UEFI but I believe only the i5 system had the TPM.
I had 3 partitions and still wouldn't work. I had to delete D: and merge C: & D: which were on the same 2TB SSD. Worked like a charm after that. Thanks mate 👍
You saved me money and a headache. I didn't understand why mbr2gpt wouldn't work, and 99% of the videos here try to sell software to do this. Just shrinking my main partition on disk 0 did the trick, as it made space for the UEFI partition (which apparently only needs 100Mb). Thank you.
MY MAN!!!!!! u just save my ass, thank you!! Im a dude in distress with legacy mode overshadowing me leptop, and uefi always maketh "no bootable device" forever.. Once again, thanks man! I truly appreciate you detailed instruction. Its help, unlike those mainstream vid which only explain how to succed but no fail anticipation.
@@itarmy2778 bruh, i think i found a new problem fer ya! If you convert your allos from either mbr to uefi or the otherway around. When you do windows 10 update, it would crash and you wont even be able to boot cause the system is changed but the hardisk still the previous one. This happen to me yesterday. And i had to install windows in fd from another pc, and run the fd windows to format all the hardisk first, then doing total reinstall. Its quite the labor since running windows in fd were practically much slower than in harddisk
Great info in this video, was struggling to get my pc to install windows 11 due to the UEFI issues and validation error. thanks, man! all sorted now. 👍👍👍👍👍
H! I haven't been succesful with converting to GPT and get this error: 2021-10-19 22:53:38, Error ValidateLayout: First partition too close to the beginning of the disk. Should start at offset 17408 or above, found at 4096 Can you help?
TY for this video. Read in setup.err "Disk layout validation failed for disk 1 2021-10-25 14:03:15, Error ValidateLayout: Last partition too close to the end of the disk. Should end at offset 512110173696 or below, found at 512110190592" . After shrinking that volume the validation was succesful.
Wow, you really explained it way way better than some of Microsoft employees did. I am gonna convert it, hopefully, it won't wipe out the two partitions.
Almost a great video. Not quite great because it didn't work for me, sadly. I got as far as "mbr2gpt /convert /allowFullOS" and waited, and then: Conversion failed. Cannot creat EFT system partition. Error 0x000036B7. I'm still on MBR. So now I'm back to square one. On disk 0 I had 500 mb NTFS and the C: partition was 465 gb on which I then created a new partition of 500 mb. [Unallocated] so I have now 3 partitions. The validation part worked, "Validation completed successfully" but not the conversion. Can you or anybody help? I've been at this all day and it's now 10 pm. and I'll check tomorrow if anyone has read my problem. Thanks.
READ THIS IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS Thanks didn't solve my problem but you showed me exactly where to look for the error to debug. It showed me that my system reserve wasn't on the same drive as my OS which must have happened when I first built my PC apparently when you download your OS you need to make sure you don't have any other drives plugged in because I did and some reason the system reserve was sent to the other drive. So that being said I was able to create a drive letter for the system reserve < original one. Then on my OS I shrinked the volume and created a partition and transferred the system reserve to the new partition it can be complicated but if you are knowledgeable you can handle it there is certain commands in the cmd prompt which "robocopy f:\ e:\ e:/" you will only be able to transfer 3 files the rest well idk I just said screw it. After that I got rid of the letter format and set the partition as active restarted my PC and it allowed me to convert MBR to GPT
Hi, Thanks a ton for this video. This helped me to resolve the UEFI issue I was facing, while converting from Legacy to UEFI. Watched couple other of your videos as well in order to resolve it. Thanks again.
Excellent video, but it did not work for me. On Disk 1, I have the OS in the C: partition. As your video shows, I created a new volume/partition. I had two; you had three; I do not have a System Reserve volume on Disk 1. When I try 'mbr2gpt /validate /disk:1 /allowfullos' I still get the error "Disk layout validation failed for disk 0." Both my partitions are Type 7. (I tried a variety of partitioning, none worked).
4:36 , so i will not to be able to change my disk? , i have 2 disk , disk 0 is hdd 1 tb and disk 1 is ssd m.2 240 gb THAT has windows , what can i do i have the "4:36" error and i have no partitions on any disk
Hi IT army. Hi, I was shrinking my C volume and halfway I had power outage so my laptop went off. When power came back ON I started my computer, everything seemed normal and my C drive showed same memory space available as it had before I tried shrinking it the first time but when I tried to continue shrinking my C volume I got this error "There is not enough space available to complete this operation." I have 416GB available and I want to shrink out 120GB
Yo what if it says ValidateLayout: Too many MBR partitions found, no room to create EFI system partition. Error Disk layout validation failed for disk 0?
So I converted the disk and plan to move the os to ssd so I can boot from it and save other data on hdd, I cloned successfully with partition assistant.
Hi I am having issues after following all the step. Seems like window is not starting and asking for a drive to boot. After I reset to legacy something popped up like Grub. Please help me
I have an SSD (Disk 0) which I boot my OS from, but I have a Recovery Partition at the end of my Disk 0 which I can't remove or move and I think is stopping MBR2GPT validating. Any thoughts?
Thanks for taking the time to cover this... I had four partitions on my 2TB nvme.... nobody else mentions that this is the problem... Awesome video... you got a new subscriber!

My problem is that my disk 0 looks just like yours at the beginning of your video; I go to the shift/restart and computer restarts i get to command prompt x:\ type in mbr2gpt.exe /convert AND STILL I get the validation error. And I do have 21H2.

Do you have registration code for Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery or Recoveryit? Just need to retrieve important files on the disk F that become the DVD after rebooting and might did something with the partition due to the malware that I had to remove. Now, Ican retrieve the old files but not the files for this year and last year files
Great Video! This mbr2gpt.exe is not very helpful with pointers about what was wrong and why it didn't validate in my case. After watching your video had a look in those error logs, which was really helpful. In my case it returned Volume: , Error:0x00000012 - which was in fact exactly what you showed at the end. Basically it can't proceed with Extended Partition (Green in Disk Management).. Anyway.. issue is - If someone will be dealing with similar scenario: In my case I had data on this partition, which was crucially important to save without deleting/recreating - some proprietary software with database etc. So.. solution is to use third party software such as AOMEI Partition Assistant, which has a feature called "Convert" Extended to Primary. After doing so - mbr2gpt.exe does its magic with no troubles ; ) And.. Voila! Up to date build with UEFI boot / Secure Boot enabled etc + saved stuff on safe OS. Thank you!
It doesn't work for me, my local disk is disk 4, also if I try it with programs it tells me: invalid configure file or the system partition and boot are on different disks, I don't understand anything.

I guess you have 2 disks. Disk 0 is system disk and the other disk is boot disk. You need to create a boot partition in disk 0 to convert it to GPT. Why you want to convert to UEFI?
Can the recovery partition cause, that I receive the same "Disk layout validation failed for disk 0" message? Deleting recovery can help to perform this conversation?
Hello, I got the error; cannot find os partition for disk 2. What should I try next? I had too many partitions, so I deleted the others and left only two. Those are, system reserved and the c: drive partition.
@IT Army: Could you kindly help me get this conversion error fixed?: "cannot find room for the efi system partition". I have a 4TB SSD and disk space is distributed as follows: - a system-reserved partition with 100MB -a data partition storing windows, programs, games etc with 465.17 GB - a recovery partition with 501 MB - two unassigned non partition sections with around 1.5 and 1.6 TB each. How do I ensure a successful conversion now? Thank you very much!
Check the disk partition style. I guess your disk is already GPT because MBR supports maximum 2 partition. RIght click the unassigned partitions and create volume.
Hi. I'm only having four primary partitions c:, e:, recovery partition and system reserved partition. Yet the mbr2gpt validation fails. I'm having a lenovo ideapad 330 machine. what are the possible reasons?
Thank you very much. This was quite helpful in getting a couple of my machines up on Windows 11 by only ignoring the processor. I do have another question, if you can advise me on a similar procedure for Windows Server 2012 R2. I have a pair of home built machines with GUID capability setup a number of years ago as Server 2003, then upgraded to Server 2008 and then Server 2012 R2. Through these transitions MBR was adequate, but now I want to add some 4TB drives which require GPT. I setup a test box after a power outage killed one of my servers, breaking completely one drive in my raid 1 set and damaging the other. A lot of chkdsk got the damaged drive in to good enough shape where I could grab the system off and make a clone with another 1TB drive, so the flaky disk became a test bed. Not finding this utility anywhere for Server I tried the Windows 10 version and it validated ok and then appeared to run successfully. However the drive could no longer boot and kept trying to complete a boot repair. BCDEdit indicated a setup that seemed should work and a startup repair from the troubleshoot system function failed also, so no smiles. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and best regards, Ken
Update Continued research while awaiting more info. This still seemed a reasonable solution so I refreshed my test copy and retried. This time successfully. Part of the desired end system was 2 TB system drives. After I had transferred the system to a 2TB test drive I expanded the data portion. I believe this prevented the MBR2GPT utility from seeing excess space for the UFI portion. On this retry I waited until after the utility had succeeded to expand this data space. And that seemed to allow it to run properly. Thanks for any thoughts and efforts to assist!!! Regards, Ken
Hi thanks for the video but it still did not work for me. Conversation failed (cannot find room for EFI system partition) tried to create a third partion but apparently I don't have any spare space to create it. Even though I have 78gb available. Modern system Any suggestions?
I have 3 different disk drives with 3 different partitions (C, D and E). One partition for each physical disk drive. My disk drive that has windows in it only has one partition. Is that ok or do i need to reduce my total no. of partitions?
Great videos but still stuck on my issue, can you help? Tried to attach a link to image on google drive of diskmgr partitions but comment deleted (due to that link I suspect). Full error on my win10 drive is as below. I am booting from usb (win10 rufus created WINPE) as my new motherboard/CPU won't allow legacy bios to boot from my hard drive (hence the attempts to convert it!). I tried to shrink partition 2, but could not extend into it from partition 3 with diskmgr, and when i tried to extend from partition 1 it warned me about creating dynamic partition, so I cancelled. This meant I had 4 partitions if formatted, assigned etc, which fails on mbr2gpt due to > 3 partitions. @@itarmy2778 Thanks for replying, really appreciated! Disk Manager won't let me shrink the 3rd partition (because it's a recovery partition, maybe?). Should I resort to 'disk part' tool instead, or do I need to delete the recovery partition completely ( I think you have a video on that option)?

Hi I'm facing an issue with the conversion. Apparently my system partition is in my Disk 0 while my boot partition is in Disk 1. I'm trying to convert my Disk 1 because that's the SSD disk so any idea if its possible for me to create or shift the system partition into my Disk 1? Thanks man.
Hello I have a situation here I am still getting an error. I don't know of what the main reason is but I can tell what I have. On my disk 0: I have system reserved and hard drive and for disk 1: c drive , new volume and something like 508 mb healty(recovery). I would be greatfull if you can help me figure out. Thank you
i have a problem while following the steps mentioned in your video. In setuperr file it's showing index 2 the same way in your video it was showing index 3. I have only two partion of my drive. Plz help to resolve this.
my drive is set uefi in the system information and gpt formatted. i did this manually during install. however i have recover, system, reserved, primary, and recovery. on this disk. additionally my bios are still in csm mode not uefi. when i set it to uefi it fails to boot but i dont get an error. it just rolls the load icon forever. also my validation fails help

Does a recovery partition count? I have followed your video transferring my system reserved file into the same disk as my OS but now I have four partitions: My OS Drive, another usable partition, my system reserved, and recovery drive. Is this the reason why my conversion won't work?

@@itarmy2778 Thank you, sir, for the time and effort that you expend helping those of us who aren't NEARLY as computer savvy as you....
Had to shrink by only 1MB then it finally agreed to do the convertion
you're a life saver!
This is an informative tutorial, and I also fixed by converting from mbr to gpt with ao mei partition this one is nice.
Great to hear!
The UEFI standard has been around from somewhere in the 2005/2010 period, so "if your machine is 8 to 10 years old" in 2019, there is a good chance it has UEFI.
i have a 2011 machine but it legacy
i have 2019 pc it has legacy
My 1st gen i7 and 4th gen i5 both have UEFI options. First gen i7 is on a Dell precision M4500 laptop and my I-5 was on a MSI Z87-G45 motherboard. Both of them support UEFI but I believe only the i5 system had the TPM.

Did not know about 3 logical partition limit. Thank you, I will try that.
Thank you.
Happy to help you. You can shift to UEFI without converting disk to GPT ruclips.net/video/u_ROQyKBDRo/видео.html

Yes, just move system and boot partition

@@itarmy2778 bruh, i think i found a new problem fer ya! If you convert your allos from either mbr to uefi or the otherway around. Its quite the labor since running windows in fd were practically much slower than in harddisk

obrigado meu nobre, achei o que faltou nos comentários, mas sua explicação é única, parabéns.

It finally work's now thanks now I can switch to Windows 11
Enjoy!

Is it still up-to-date that mbr2gpt only works for the disk running Win10? Because some articles said it also works for external drives

-a data partition storing windows, programs, games etc with 465.17 GB
- a recovery partition with 501 MB
- two unassigned non partition sections with around 1.5 and 1.6 TB each.
How do I ensure a successful conversion now?

Check the disk partition style. I guess your disk is already GPT because MBR supports maximum 2 partition. RIght click the unassigned partitions and create volume.

Thanks and best regards,
Ken
Update
Continued research while awaiting more info.

Ken
how would i fix "Cannot find OS partition(s) for disk 0?"
Very good information. Thank you!
Hi thanks for the video but it still did not work for me. Conversation failed (cannot find room for EFI system partition) tried to create a third partion but apparently I don't have any spare space to create it. Even though I have 78gb available.
Modern system
Any suggestions?
IT WORKS! thanks a ton mate!

You're welcome!

Considered removing reserved (part 1) or recovery partition (3), but nervous about trashing drive permanently without being sure of correct option to progress with. Can you advise?

@@itarmy2778 Thanks for replying, really appreciated! Disk Manager won't let me shrink the 3rd partition (because it's a recovery partition, maybe?). Should I resort to 'disk part' tool instead, or do I need to delete the recovery partition completely ( I think you have a video on that option)?
@IT Army Sorted! Tried again to shrinklast partition but disk part won't allow it as it's a Recovery partition. So, found one of your other videos and followed those instructions to convert without using MBR2GPT, and it worked perfectly! If I extend drive G (or any other adjacent drive) so that it also takes up the unallocated space, will personal files in drive G be deleted? Please help me. Thanks in advance.
Didn't work with two partitions, increased them to three and it still gave can't find os. I'm thinking the system drive at the front stops it finding it.
Thank you. Your video have been very helpfull!!
Why does the validation fail when there are more than 3 primary partitions ?
Because MBR can have maximum 4 partitions

Glad to hear that
Absolutely love these videos but I'm still a little lost. I'm nervous to mess around with my partitions so I'm hoping you can help me. I'm getting a "Disk layout validation failed for disk 0" and I'm not sure why. Here is how my partitions are set up:
Disk 0: C: Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) | Healthy (Recovery Partition) | Healthy (Recovery Parition)
Disk 1: Hard Drive 2 Healthy (Basic Data Partition)
Disk 2: System Reserved Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) | Hard Drive Healthy (Primary Partition)
I'm fairly certain the issue is that my System Reserved is on a different drive from my OS (on my C:). I wanted to confirm before I started trying to move this over to my Disk 0. Do you think that would resolve the issue?
Thank you!
You're welcome. You need to create system partition in disk 0 and delete the system partition from disk 2.

Hi.. I'm still having difficulty in converting. I have 3 partitions, two of which won't shrink. Please advice
Please help me... I have 2 hard drives.. it converted the wrong drive(disk:1) which I am not concerned with. Disk 0 is giving me an error that says cannot find OS partition for disk 0: conversion failed. My disk 0 has 2 partition. The primary partition says boot, page file, active, crash dump, PRIMARY partition. The 2nd partition on disk 0 says healthy recovery partition. I noticed that in the main partition for disk 0 it DOES NOT SAY SYSTEM. How can I get a successful gpt conversion to work on disk 0?
You need to have Boot and System on the same disk.
@@itarmy2778 how do I do that?
Can I use a partition cloning program to do this?
