  • This video explores Sitka, Alaska and explains how to get to downtown Sitka on your own and enjoy the sights and sounds of the quaint pedestrian only area, at your own pace. Sitka is a beautiful place, only accessible by boat or plane.
Join me on an unforgettable self-guided walking tour of Sitka, Alaska! On board the Ovation of the I took the chance to explore this beautiful city on my own and it was a breeze. With so much to see and do, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to create your own adventure. From historic landmarks to breathtaking wilderness, I'll show you how you can experience it all without a shore excursion.
"Sitka is an island community boldly living between the mountains and sea, where the arts flourish and an ancient native culture still thrives. Surrounded by rainforest, we share our home with brown bears, bald eagles and all five species of Pacific salmon. In Sitka, we are deeply connected to the natural world around us. It informs our culture and inspires our art" (Visit Sitka.org).
    HELPFUL INFORMATION:
We enjoyed walking around and seeing all the sights, but make sure you factor in the shuttle transport both directions! Also, how many ships are there at the same time? This will affect how your day will go, but just be flexible and have a plan!
PICK ONE TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Do you want shopping or nature? IT IS HARD TO SEE EVERYTHING!
Many people opted for ship shore excursions that took them on hikes or various other areas to view wildlife. Book your excursions early because they do sell out, fast!
I enjoyed walking around the downtown and I hope this helps you decide on what you may want to do when in Sitka!

Thanks for the vid. My cruise will be there in July and the little stuff, like the bus to and from town, is what I love finding out about before I get there. It never occured to me that there would be such a long wait to get back to the ship. Considering ships dock there every day, I assumed they would have that running like clockwork. Obviously not. lol

I think it really depends how many ships are in town. It is efficient, but allow time! Thanks for watching!

It is a nice place to visit. I would recommend getting off the ship the minute it docks so you can see everything! Thanks for watching 🌲🌲🌲!

What time was the ship leaving port? Ours leaves at 4pm so I hope that 2:30 will be ok to go towards the bus stop. Wish we had more time in port lol

I think it was the same for ours. I think that should be fine. It really depends on how many other ships are there at the same time. It creates a traffic problem. It runs pretty organized, it took about 45 minutes in line and the ride was about 15 minutes. Our ship didn’t leave until 430.

What was you times for the port?

I think we got in around 8 and left around 4. It’s hard to remember exactly, but I know the back on board time was before dinner. We were in a line going back around 3 from downtown. It can be busy to and from downtown with people, even if it’s free shuttles. It depends on how many other ships are in at the same time!
