  • Welcome to Sitka, Alaska, another common port should you find yourself on any Alaskan cruise. We hit Sitka as our second stop aboard Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas (link down below). Located on Baranof Island, the location makes Sitka pretty rainy a lot of the time. We got lucky during this walk, but know that this is not the norm. The weather was, in fact, a torrential rain storm upon arrival in port, but then cleared up for the rest of the day. In fact, while it was quite chilly in the shade, it got hot rather quick. Suffice to say, bring layers and waterproof or water resistant clothes. If it does rain, it could be a light and brief squall or a downpour. Temperature-wise, we visited Sitka in mid-September, so it hit the high 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit during the day.
As far as port goes, as soon as you arrive, you'll have to take a 15-minute shuttle into town. This is free of charge, but give yourself time to get back to the ship. Lines get long, and if there are two ships in port, the wait can take over an hour. Regardless, once you're in Sitka proper, there's plenty you can reach on foot. For us, we took a lap around the main tourist thoroughfare and trekked up to the top of Baranof Castle, through Totem Square, and to the Pioneer's Home and Lincoln Street.
Lincoln Street will be your best shot for snagging food and drink, and you'll even find a pharmacy if you need it. From there, it's a strait shot along Crescent Harbor to Sitka National Historical Park. You'll see this park in many excursion available through Royal Caribbean, but know that it's easily walkable. It's also free. There you'll find any number of beautiful streams, rocky beaches, and totems. There's also the Alaska Raptor Center in the area, but we didn't visit unfortunately. Those in our party who did, however, spoke good things.
Should you visit the park, know that it is "mostly" wheelchair and stroller accessible (though I don't know that I'd advise wheelchairs). Most of the trails are all hard-packed dirt with some rock, and not hard to push through. However, there are some trails along the beach and streams that become narrow, winding, and with steep inclines and declines. Some portions even have stone steps, meaning that if you do have a stroller or wheelchair, you'll be carrying it short spans.

Oh, if you're a local, I'm sure. That said, this was a weekday and there was very minimal traffic all day, so maybe it's not tooooo bad.

@@SmallWorldTravelAmbience Well tourists are really dumb and they always step out into the street in front of cars, especially by the church. So maybe they just gave up on protecting them and closed the street when ships are in town.
