- Today we are visiting Sitka on the FIRST cruise to Alaska for 2024! We are the only ship in Alaska this week, what a cool thing! We spent a few hours off the ship, and spent $0 on excursions, while seeing a good chunk of downtown.
In this video, I reference Adevnture Labs with Geocaching. We do these in every port in Alaska, and they bring us to some cool places we may not have otherwise seen.
Southeast Alaska is a temperate rainforest and is just like the Washington coast. I love the Totems here. They all tell a story of the people.
Thank you very much… great video.. looking forward to view your other videos
Thank you, please let me know if you have any questions.
I’m going in July on the same cruise. That you for your info. Taking a lot of bonine for the open ocean. The inside passage is usually smooth. Rain is common in this area. It is so much like Seattle but it is hot here this summer.
Thanks for the reminder to pack my National Park stampbook!
I don't think I have ever once remembered to bring ours. I have plenty of those little papers that still need to be taped inside.
I appreciate your videos! We go on an Alaskan cruise in less than 3 weeks, God willing! Thank you so much for not having kitchy background music....LOL.
You'll have a great time. We have a few more days of daily vlogs left to go... and my favorite port of the cruise is still to come :)
Sitka burger & crab shack is amazing!!! Truly best meal we ate on our trip to Alaska
Good to know for the future!
You do a great job on your videos! We are cruising to Alaska shoulder season May 2025. I have been to Alaska twice but my other half has never been. We are doing a B2B out of Vancouver on HAL. Really enjoying this Alaska series you have published. Then I will look at others as well. We were Florida residents for over 40 years. Retired in 2015 and hit the road in our RV fulltime. We spend most of our time out west. We are taking a 6 day repositioning cruise from San Diego to Vancouver before we board our Alaska cruises. I am especially enjoying seeing NCL Bliss as we have never cruised NCL. Your cabin looks very nice.
Thank you! The longest cruise I ever did was 11 days, not sure if I could do a 2-week back to back, plus the 6 day repositioning cruise! You are a cruise warrior! I have cruised NCL and Royal Caribbean, plus the old Bahamas cruise line that is now Margaritaville... my husband has done Carnival. We both agree that NCL is the best. Maybe not as much to do as Royal, but the food is so much better, and the overall ambiance we prefer.
@@journeywiththejaneks before we retired we could only do 7 day. Now retired we are on vacation 24/7. We just did 18 days San Diego to Hawaii in January...it was WONDERFUL... Although the seas going to Hawaii were VERY rough. Captain said the roughest seas he has experienced in his 22 years as a captain. So when we arrived in Hawaii EVERYONE was ready for land!
@@susananderson618 Amazing! We are eyeing the NCL cruise in Hawaii, as it stays only within the islands, but it's so much travel time.
I enjoyed your video. And I apologize for the protesters and their negativity. Also that wasn’t mount edgecomb that you showed. Hope you enjoyed your visit.
Thank you! What mountain was it? I was trying to find the mountain overlooking Sitka and that was the one that came up. I want to make sure I have it correct.
What a different experience a week later. I sailed April 13-20 and the weather was absolutely gorgeous the entire time. Sorry that your weather was so bad but I am really thankful I went when I did! Never had to use my umbrella once and ended up taking off my jackets most of the time too!
I am glad you had good weather! We were watching and saw how much better it was that second week and tried not to think about it :)
We are going in June and I am also a geocacher. Good to know there is an Ad Lab there. We don’t have a tour here.
@@Calmjan There are a BUNCH in some ports! I think Juneau had 4 or 5. But they are in every port, even Icy Strait Point.
There is a coast guard station in Sitka
Good to know, that makes sense!
Often your the date of your posting of the video may not mean that you were in Alaska in the immediate past. So it is always good, for viewers’ information the period of your travel that your video is telling the story !
We were the first cruise of the 2024 season. We left April 6, 2024
Wow, you did a lot of walking! How many steps or miles did you walk?
I went back and checked my Fitbit data for the day. Total was 20,037 steps, or 8.6 miles!
@@journeywiththejaneks I'm 67, I don't think I could do that much. I did 15,000 once, though, so maybe I can do it in Sitka. I'll try my best. I want to see as much as I can on our May 2025 Alaskan cruise
Did they give you a Norwegian Bliss?Lanyard, when you got on the ship.Or digit purchase i
No, we purchased them. They were available at the photo shop.
Do you think the ship felt rough because of an aft cabin? Would a midship cabin been better?
I don't know. We were in the middle of the aft, I really wonder if it would have been worse had we been on the sides, as we would have felt the roll more. The last Alaska cruise I did I was in a midship balcony and it was much worse... but I don't know if the waves were also bigger that day.
Best time to do this cruise is June thru August
Agreed, if you're only going to do this cruise once in your lifetime, it's definitely better in the summer. I have done it in July before, and we decided to try early in the season to see if the lower price balanced the negatives.
Are the Starbucks prices on board typical pricing or upcharged?
I would say slightly uncharged. I don't know if they also added the 20% gratuity because we had the package and never had to pay for drinks, and I believe when you buy the package you do have to pay the 20% gratuity. But for whatever reason, we didn't pay anything, not even the extra gratuity. Only when in Seattle and Washington waters was there an additional sales tax that was mandatory.
You didn’t get Sitka Nuts inside the cruise terminal? By far the best thing to eat in Sitka.
No, they smelled great, but unless it is something very unique, we have free food on the ship. So we never buy food outside. The only items we bought off ship this trip were a few beers, and if we did the drink package, we wouldn't have bought those either.
I go in 3 weeks I hope we have snow 😊
There was snow in the forecast almost every day, but this was the only time we actually got any.
From where you guys going from? They cancel are Sitka stop we are so not happy with them.
I leaving from Seattle but going on the Sun
@candicefleetwood2529 I like the Sun. I went on that ship many years ago on a Western Caribbean cruise... back when you actually went to Belize City and not Harvest Cay.
@Manjihouewife If they swapped the itinerary for Skagway, it's more than a fair trade. I did Skagway on my last cruise to Alaska and it was beautiful. Lots of history, but with the gold rush.
What time of year was this? Looked cold
We were on the first cruise of the season, starting April 6, 2024.
What month was your trip?
We left on April 6th, just a few weeks ago. I have also been on the cruise in July, and once we have finished this video series, I am going to do some short videos, one of which will be the pros and cons of going in April versus the summer.
We are going in 3 weeks!
Awesome! Any excursions booked?
Yes. Train in skagway, kayak and Mendenhall in Juneau, a totem park in Ketchikan.
@@phfay7 Those should be awesome, especially the Mendenhall glacier kayaking. I saw other videos from our cruise, and they could barely see the glacier due to it being high tide... but on kayak you would have an amazing view!
