  • Discussing my experience running ChromeOS Flex on the Beelink SER5 Mini PC. This thing comes with a Ryzen 7, 16GB RAM, and 500GB ssd for under $300, so it's a pretty good deal if it's able to "go the distance". Find it on Amazon here: amzn.to/3U6jpjI

Hey thanks for the recommendation. I got this one delivered yesterday and an hour later I had ChromeOS installed on it. Everything works fine, bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet etc. The only thing that I'm having issues with is the audio, it would not stream audio through the HDMI port for some reason or using an audio cable from the front port, however I managed to get audio working using Bluethtooth, which for me is enough. This is my third MiniPC and second one from Beelink lol, I hope it lasts.

I have been using this SER5 with Flex as my daily driver for about a month now and it's been working great. I did upgrade the RAM in it, I had 2x16gb ddr4 sticks in my closet and I put those in, so now I am running 32gb RAM on Chrome OS. Overkill, perhaps. But with 16gb I was actually running up to the limit when using Android Studio and the device emulator :-/

@@BrandonStecklein I was thinking of installing Flex, but then I read that you cannot use Playstore with it, so I went ahead and downloaded a ChomeOS image for this MiniPC's processor architecture, and also downloaded Brunch, created a bootable USB and followed the instructions on another RUclips video, and it installed successfully, like I said everything is working.
However, I'm concerned about how this will handle updates. I read somewhere that this setup can easily be broken by ChromeOS updates. Perhaps I should just have installed Flex and look for a way to get the Playstore installed there, or maybe I should have picked another route such as FydeOS, which seems great too.

@@RealAct Playstore on Flex is a dead end, but it does work good on Fyde. I have been meaning to try Brunch, can you enable borealis on Brunch and install steam?

@@BrandonStecklein thanks for the feedback, then Flex it's a no-go for me for now because I need the Playstore. Regarding your question, I'm sorry, I have not tried installing Borealis, I'll post if I do it and let you know the results. BTW I just went to Bestbuy and picked a 32GB of RAM Crucial kit and upgraded this MiniPC, now I'm not longer always hitting almost the limit. Boy, ChromeOS is RAM happy! It takes all you give to it, lol.

@@BrandonStecklein I'm not sure why RUclips keeps deleting my comments. I had replied before, saying that I have not tried Borealis, but if I do, I'll let you know how it went. BTW I picked up a 32GB Ram kit and upgraded this MiniPC, and it's so much better. I'm no longer always hitting the limit how I was with the 16GB it had before. Man ChromeOS is so RAM hungry, it takes all you can give it to it lol.

Sounds like this thing is a fairly powerful linux pc. If you ever want to cover things that are not Chrome OS I would say feel free. It sounds like you do some things with Fedora as well.

I've actually got a Ryzen 2000 mini pc I bought for $120 I run at my desk for non-gaming or rendering tasks and it works pretty well, so these mini pcs like this are pretty nice to have on hand. I just run Linux Mint or LMDE on my stuff.

Hi I got a mini pc with Intel n4000 Celeron processor, Is it a good idea to install chrome os flex on it ?

I think so. Half of the videos on my channel were recorded using an ASUS laptop with an Intel n4000 and 4gb of RAM

I have the Beelink U59 Pro (16GB & NVMe). Runs CrOS Flex nicely. Except it doesn't support the Intel AX101 WiFi card that comes with it. So far, no problems. It's much better value than the new costlier dual core 8gb ram Lenovo micro Chromebox that comes with my favourite feature: eMMC storage./s 😂
